Richard Quick diagnosed with brain tumor

I have confirmed that the Tigers' swim coach, Richard Quick, has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He's 65 years old.

UPDATE: The Swimming World story included this tidbit I found interesting:
A Prayer Pager has been set up for Coach Quick at 334-742-5224. Whenever someone says a prayer for him, they can send a page to that number anonymously to cause his pager to vibrate. This will allow him to know when a prayer is said for him.

Here is Auburn's official release.
AUBURN—Auburn men’s and women’s head swimming and diving coach Richard Quick has been diagnosed with an inoperable cancerous brain tumor. One of the most recognizable names in the swimming and diving community, Quick is a six-time United States Olympic coach who has directed 12 teams to NCAA titles.

“We’re currently in the process of looking for the best care
possible to fight this,” Quick said. “I want to thank the countless
individuals that have passed along their well wishes, thoughts and
prayers.”

Quick, who served as Auburn’s head coach from 1978-82, took
over the Tiger program for a second time in 2007. He is in his second
season and sixth overall at Auburn.

“Richard is such an energetic person, has an incredibly
positive attitude, and is bound by his faith,” Auburn Athletics
Director Jay Jacobs said. “I know that he’s going to meet this
challenge head on, just as he has done with every endeavor he’s
encountered. We ask the Auburn Family to keep Richard and his family in
their thoughts and prayers.”

While the head coach of both the men's and women's programs at
Auburn from 1978-82, Quick built the foundation for where the program is
today, leading both programs to a combined four top-10 finishes on the
national level.

Quick captured seven NCAA titles at Stanford and five at Texas,
which is tied for the most in the history of Division I coaching.
Internationally, Quick was the head coach of the United States team at
the 1988, 1996, and 2000 Olympic Games and also served as an assistant
at the 1984, `92, and 2004 Olympics.

Quick served as the head women's swimming and diving coach
at Stanford for 17 seasons from 1988-2005. Prior to his arrival at
Stanford, Quick led the Texas women to a then-unprecedented five
straight NCAA titles (1984-88), a string he extended to six in a row in
his first season at Stanford.

In the interim under Quick’s direction, Brett Hawke will
oversee the men’s team, while Dorsey Tierney-Walker will run the
women’s program.

Monica, From the previous thread, my vote for DC would be R. Lee Ermey in character as Gunny Sgt. Hartman

Best quote that can be displayed from the movie: "Today... is Christmas! There will be a magic show at zero-nine-thirty! He plays His games, we play ours! To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls! God was here before the Marine Corps! BigCat: This is from Auburnsports.com posted last night.
"Bryan Matthews
AuburnSports.com has learned that Auburn recently offered Springdale (Ark.) quarterback Ashton Glaser, who is currently committed to Missouri. He is scheduled to be an early graduate and enroll in school in January.

Jeff Lee
We just spoke with Glaser. He and Gus Malzahn are very close, have been since Malzahn left Springdale. Glaser called Malzahn yesterday to congratulate him on the AU job at which time Malzahn offered him the opportunity to come and play for him. Glaser said he appreciated the interest, but was going to stick with Missouri. He is scheduled to move to Missouri Jan. 19 and go through spring."

Thanks Monica, I stand corrected. I wonder why he offered him if he was so solid to Mizzo? Mizzo does have another higher rated dual-threat QB coming in as well. Maybe he thought he could steal him.

Big Cat - I read speculation that it was because it would count against 08 recruits, not 09 and Malzahn already had a relationship with him.

10:04 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I thought it was interesting that Malzahn did not offered Mosley even though he was a higher rated dual-threat QB than Glaser. I wonder does that speak to Mosley's potential at this level or if Malzahn just hasn't had time to really evaluate him yet.

10:10 AM
Blogger Will said...

Mon, thanks for the info on Glaser, I am actually from that area in ARK (Ziemba's home town) and had been studying up on him. Any other recruiting tid-bits that might help me get through the last day of this dismal AU sporting year?

10:13 AM
Blogger Monica said...

BigCat - Again, I think it's more about the fact that offering to Glaser (who would have enrolled at Auburn this coming January) would have counted as an 08 recruit. I don't know, but I doubt Gus (I call him Gus cuz we're tight like that) has even looked at Moseley yet.

Will - That's all I see on recruits. Sorry. However, there's lots of movement in the NFL ranks. Out of work coaches always creates a little chatter.

This is an interesting read.

Texans shake up defensive coaching staff

10:19 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Monica do you think we would take any of the Texans coaches? I'm sure Chizik had some relationship with them if they were around when he was in Austin. I never watch the Texans and last I can remember hearing, they were pretty bad. I dont know if that was b/c of the O or D.

10:26 AM
Blogger Monica said...

No idea if we'd want them or could get them. I'm just killing time till we hear an announcement.
As for the Texans being bad and not knowing if it was an O or D issue, I thought this paragraph of that article was particularly interesting:

"When head coaches fire coordinators on the side of the ball they are not responsible for (Kubiak is an offense guy), it is usually a job-saving move. So this points to a bigger-issue: Kubiak recognizes 8-8 won't cut it next year."

10:36 AM
Blogger scott,will not,from tucson said...

in the "what have you done for me lately" department, the broncos fired shanahan. 2 super bowl wins just doesn't cut it any more.

10:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

In the Broncos defense those two Superbowls were back in 97 & 98.

Shanahan was 1-4 without John Elway in playoff games after he retired.

10:41 AM
Blogger J. Kev said...

Sad news indeed about Coach Quick.

On the Barkley front, I say not so much. Let's see: The guy used every open microphone he could find to call Auburn University a racist institution. Not long before, he called all Republicans "fake Christians."

But fear not, Charles. I'm sure the cops were racially profiling. Of course, if you could have just waited until Jan. 20 to drive drunk, Obama's mere existence as president would have kept those hood-wearing cops from pulling you over.

10:46 AM
Blogger scott,will not,from tucson said...

that is true, rk. his last 3 years were mediocre. but, still...

10:46 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Scottie- you still doing inventory? :-)

10:57 AM
Blogger J. Kev said...

Shanahan was making about 6 million a year. He's a big boy, and he'll land on his feet.

I think Mangini's firing was much more questionable.

Shanahan's in one of the weakest divisions in the league, and his teams have collapsed and miss the playoffs three straight seasons. Boland was justified in pulling the trigger.

The last 3 years Shanahan is 24-24, not to mention the meltdown at the end of this past season. Evident;y there are powers that be in Denver, too.

11:00 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Scott,

Coaching in only 5 playoff games in the past decade is probably what did him in, not just the 24-24 in the last 3 years. Add to that they play in a division where their only compeition is San Diego.

11:01 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Didn't take Cowher long to say NO THANKS to that. lol
I'm glad.

11:02 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Monica, why are you glad? Would you like to see Cowher somewhere else?

11:06 AM
Blogger Big MikeZ16 said...

FYI...Shanahan is owed 20 million over the next 3 years from the Broncos, he'll be just fine. It is a statement that the owner was ready to make a change if he's willing to forgo the 20 Big Ones and rebuild now!

Concerning Coach Quick...there's a very cool prayer pager number posted somewhere else...anyone know where that is or could post it here??? Call the number when you say a prayer for him and he gets the page....
