Rolling along on a Friday
Hey everyone. I see that you're all very excited about the possibility of Houston Nutt being Auburn's next head coach.
Is it possible? Yes.
I had a few knowledgeable people relay that name yesterday. The Advertiser forbids me from using unnamed sources, so that really limits what I can report about stuff like that. I'm working to get in touch with Nutt's People and get an official, on-the-record comment about his situation.
It's going to be a murky period here for a while. It's difficult to distill reliable information from fake stuff -- it often sounds the same -- and getting the legit stuff on the record adds a little more complexity.
We like complexity here at the HABOTN. It's all about love of the game ...

FSJ - phenomal track keeping skills. That is good.
I believe Superior would handle recruiting well. He's still Steve. It would all depend on the staff he could assemble. And he would be one to put an end of high crimson dollar handshakes.
Shall I repost my diatribe from yesterday?
Thoughts anyone?
FSJ - Yes
Crudup, is there any chance of R Garner coming back in some capacity? That would turn around recruiting in a HURRY.
sounds like Jay G. likes the guy from Cincy.
Agreed Crudup AU vs SC and his name rec would open many doors

I've generally stayed out of this discussion, but I'm not going to any longer...
I find it amusing that when Tuberville was whipping Shula's arse in state it was because he was outworking him.
However, when Saban is whipping Tuberville's arse, it's because he is buying players.
Interesting how that works.
8:50 PM
Spurrier, even in his prime his idea of recruiting was talking to the kid and saying "Boy, you're gonna be a Gator, right?" Usually the kid would say yes...if they waivered, he never talked to them again and moved on to the next big time recruit who wanted to go to Florida.
That didn't work so well trying to bring kids to South carolina.
BINGO RK
Jay G to Josh "why you laughin'?"
Funny!
Hey everyone - Please keep the language clean. Puting a few *** in your word doesn't disquise it. There are minors that read this blog and Jay G. has aked more than once that we don't "cuss".
Thanks mom.....errrr mon.
RK ... don't know where you get that ... personal family recruited by SS and went to FSU ... SS dogged him through the whole thing may be a special case but doesn't strike me as such
Spurrier was like that with a lot of recruits at Florida.
That's why Andrew Zow didn't go there after being a Florida fan his whole life.
There are plenty of other recruits through the years who said the same thing about him. For the most part Spurrier let Florida recruit itself.
This guy on is smoking something
Houston Nutt just seems to parallel to Tommy T.
that was a great call FSJ...what was the problem?
'steamrolled' baby. ha.
Faker - You get a little more bammer everyday. Bless your heart.
I CARE!!!
FSJ - A shout out!!
Faker crossed into bammer territory the first time he called the roundtable.
HABOTN:
Hottest Alabama Blog On The Net.
If Zow was a Florida fan why did he turn it down when offered? Just askin' I am sure that UF's name helped tremendously along with judging the strength of a turn down but to say he asked once and then disappeared is stretching it
And that is why Doug is not Scottie
Hoodie?
Tank Top Right Here DAWG!!
Big shout out for James in BHAM. Good work sir!
That's funny - Way to go James.
James in B'ham is the 'hottie of the week'? not sure what the heck that is but it sounds pretty sweet dude.
Petrino and Johnson have only been at their respective jobs for one year, and Butch Davis for two. Of those, Petrino seems like the only one that would up and move on in such a short timeframe, and he is, well, less than desirable from a loyalty standpoint. It seems like nobody who is really good is on the market -- we waited too late in the year to make the transition.
If we can't get a great one, I say we hire either Zook or Orgeron to a 3-year contract. We take our lumps until the cupboard is well-stocked, then prior to the end of year 3 we hire the best guy on the market at that time.
Do you people watch football? Houston Nutt took Arkansas (Arkansass!!!) to the SECCG as many times as our beloved Tubs. He (once again) beat Tubs this year with lesser talent.
I'm not saying he's the right guy for the job, but the guy can coach.
Spurrier for the most part isn't an active recruiter, he's much like Tub in that aspect.
For Spurrier to recruit well at Auburn, he'll need to hire some great assistants who are top recruiters.
It's ok to disagree. I'm just saying.
DANGITTTTT!!!!!!! i forgot the tiny tank FSJ! my bad.
FSJ- GO GATORS!
Okay Griff, so maybe we follow up on our 3-year Zook/Orgeron run with Nutt down the road...
is that a new anon....why not register? it beats lurking and you get more sympathy
I have the answer to Auburn's coaching search..
He's won over 150 games.
He coaches a dynamic offense.
He is a great recruiter...Just ask him.
Dennis Franchione
Go get him now.
"I say we hire either Zook or Orgeron to a 3-year contract."
No, you don't settle for 2nd or 3rd rate coaches unless you have to, even for that kind of strategy.
Griff,
Nutt = Tuberville with lower morals when it comes to players he recruits. Nothing more, nothing less. They are very similar.
For sure RK ... you know what opinions are like ... and yep, everyone has one 8-)
Gotta run See y'all later
also anons tend to use language that others don't appreciate because they aren't accountable
This place is turning into one big Rant sesssion. Continue the ranting!
fsj, why did you repeat this again:
"...when Tuberville was whipping Shula's arse in state it was because he was outworking him.
However, when Saban is whipping Tuberville's arse, it's because he is buying players."
We get the picture. Tubs worked hard. Saban cheats. There ya go.
No offense, but give me a freaking break on the "morality" of our players. Sure, we have plenty of 'hard fightin' soldiers' but we have just as many, if not more, hard partyin' soldiers. Don't be naive.
Michael,
In reply to Crudup above.
Bye anonymous
Michael- According to Amy E., it will take $100 handshakes to be on an even playing field.
Classy. You gotta love when mature people show up.
Anon- Go back to Al.com.
Anon used a very bad word. He must have just heard it and wants to show everyone what a big boy he is by using bad words..
Just noted a curiously registered plane leaving MGM for Detroit where Turner Gill's Buffalo squad plays Ball State for MAC Championship tonight.
Ok Eddie:
What's your gut telling you now?
Mine...
Swing for the fences with Butch Davis...
Backup: Kelly or Fisher
whatever bring in JIMBO get it over with
Wow,
I get a shout out in the gump and miss it :(
Crudup, my comparison of TT and Nutt was one of 8-4 seaons. You're right about TT being the classier guy - not even close.
FSJ- Wish I hadn't lost so much of gut today, so I could get more of a feeling :).
I honestly think that Muschamp and Petrino are still both 1a and 1b despite what people are saying. Until they come out and say no publicly, its still open.
Another Anon trying to drop unsubstantiated info about planes. Yawn..........You all are more fun than Mike Price at a strip club or Dana Kirk doing his taxes.
The fact that Mississippi State can bring in Chris Peterson, means Auburn better be swinging for the fences on this one.
I must admit, I've developed a deep hatred of Saban over the last week due primarily to his sideline tirade about how bad he wanted to stick it to AU, followed by a story on a topic-long-dead-but-just-found-by-me-in-a-link-from-the-JCCW-this-morning about how many more scholarship players he had to cut than any other coach in the world due to his win-at-all-costs-f-everyone-except-myself mentality. Until this week, I pretty much just respected what a marvelous product he puts on the field.
Anyway, despite my newfound hatred, I think it would be the most awesomest hire ever for AU to sign the jackleg to a $6M contract this evening and announce him as the next HC tomorrow around noon*. Remember how bent out of shape the Bama fans got when Tot hired Brother Bill? Okay, now multiply that outrage by itself roughly 10 million times.
It's like ninja thinkin'... I will use my enemy's strength against him. Just sayin'... it would be good times.
* with apoligies to FSJ, perhaps the only insightful and decent bammer I've ever not-quite-known.
Wonder if Petersen will make MSU go to maroon astro turf?
Anyway, it won't be an Auburn plane that goes and gets the next coach at this stage in the game.
I said this a day or two ago, but I have a friend who is on the football staff of another SEC school. He says everyone in the SEC knows Saban is cheating. Add that to what the Clemson coach said about Julio earlier this year, and now to what the coach's wife said, and I would call that smoke. Certainly, it is possible that these are just rumors being passed around between coaches and are totally false, but this is an Auburn message board. We have little hope that Auburn will be good for the next few years. FSJ, can't we at least have hope that bama will go on probation? It's that sort of hope that lets me get out of bed in the morning.
Also note that I don't know that Saban cheats or is even aware of cheating. I imagine it is boosters.
(although my friend also says that the NCAA won't go after bama again because they want bama to be strong because it is good for college football. I find that hard to believe, but who knows)
that's exactly correct Denny.
Alabama used a non University Plane last time.
Man, with the names I'm hearing I already miss Tubs. BTW, Jay, the AJC had no problem printing that Muschamp and Leach had turned Auburn down according to unconfirmed sources. But, that's The Atlanta Journal, and not a real newspaper.
nat-ur-day (noun): the most awesomest day of the week.
Anybody seen these nattylight billboards in Alabama? There's one here in Knoxville that makes me go "giggity" every time I drive past it.
Sorry about the cuss word there.
I erased it and (again) banned all anonymous posters. I guess we'll have to roll like this for a while.
Scottie: I am flossin' with the hoodie today. It's a cherished thing.
Atlanta is a real paper.
People went to Muschamp. They came back with nothing. That's all I have to say about that.
I think Leach was more of a feeler thing ... if that happened. I haven't had anyone tell me that.
Jay,
So you think Brian Kelly is the real deal? What did he do before he was Cincy's HC?
I figured he would have been the guy Tennessee went after, it surprised me when they didn't.
I still can't erase that word from my mind. I saw it. I know it was there. I will never be the same.
Guys..
I don't see Muschamp, but I will defer to the well connected Auburn HOTTIES here on that issue.
FSJ
So do we have any further insight at all?
Michael- In that situation, Spurrier would be the best hire. He would call Saban to the carpet in the press.
I like the Maroon MSU field. You would probably need to take sunglasses with you to every game.
yep michael...I'm scarred.
Guys, I've been out of the loop for a few days, but I still believe Brian Kelly is the right hire. He's won everywhere he's been, and the last time I checked, its still 100 yards from end zone to end zone in every conference. He wins conference and national titles. Don't be so ignorant as to discount him just because he's at a smaller school. Urban Meyer was too, and I'd say he's turned out pretty well. And Bob Stoops had zero head coaching experience when he got the Oklahoma job. So say it with me...BRIAN KELLY! YES WE CAN!!!
RK,
I think Kelly won a DII title before Cincy? I'll have to Google that to verify though.
If I keep hearing Houston Nutt's name get tossed around, I'm going to get depressed.
If your listening to Finebaum, he is talking to Ronnie Sanders. That guy would have an inside. I worked with him at Auburn.
Yeah, he won a national title at Grand Valley State.
RK -
Kelly won the MAC in his second year at Central Michigan before going to Cincy. He also won the D2 National Title at Grand Valley State before that.
If Bama is cheating (and by that I mean beyond the $100 handshakes-EVERYBODY DOES THAT) I hope somebody turns us in or puts the proof out there.
Otherwise it is chatter. Just like all the chatter up this way in the past about other players that signed elsewhere.
Here's some wiki info on Kelly:
Brian Kelly
Brian Kelly is a coach. He is not splash, but he is a very good coach.
Yeah, sorry FSJ, but I hold out the same hope that the Sabanator is cheating the M4AU does.
I don't think Saban is, because from where I sit it just appears he needs little sleep and places little value on personal relationships beyond what they can do for him. He is a single minded college football machine, and I don't think I would enjoy spending time with him. I think he's a jerk. But a cheat? No, not really.
But a buddy of mine told me a while back that he knows some dude that was responsible for turning Bama in to the NCAA when they went on probation the first time, and the dude told him that "things are going to blow up in Alabama's face again soon". Given how most Alabama fans behave (including my dad), I have to hold out some glimmer of hope that there is some major trouble looming for the Bama football program, whether Saban is responsible for it or whether he just suffers from collateral damage.
I'm for whoever wins and does it the right way.
Eddie,
What is being said on Finebaum?
Nutt offically OUT - per JOX
Bucth Davis is PERRRRRRRRRRRFECT.
Knows how to rcruit all of AU's areas.
Built a program at Miami against UF and FSU in their PRIME from scratch.
Has NAME reconition.
Jimbo Fisher is my No. 2
Agreed FSJ. I just think people have sour grapes about how he out works them. Granted, he will take everything to the max as the rules go. The video conferencing is priceless.
Andrew Zow?
Yeah, whoa....Spurrier didn't dog Zow to come to UF.
Whooop tee whooo
According to the guy on Finebaum..
Nutt and Fisher top 2
I don't laugh at Andrew Zow after how he destroyed us in 99 & 01.
I was using him as an example because he was the person I could think of off the top of my head.
Geez people are just cranky these days.
How do I go work for Jimmy Sexton?
Muschamp is NOT a possibility. At all. Per his words.
AU will not hire Leach. Leach WOULD be interested, though.
We are our own enemy.
Before this is over, TT is going to be responsible for getting half a dozen or more current head coaches a raise...
The guy on Finebaum apparently goes to AL.com. Not exactly a scoop.
What FSJ said, Nutt and Fisher being leading candidates.
I say Auburn shouldn't hire a Sexton coach. I would take that stance.
Are you guys ready for the "Wild Tiger" formation? Nutt has a reputation as a lazy recruiter - that's who Auburn needs to hire to compete with Saban. Stupid is as stupid does!
RK- If you only knew what I know about Ronnie. I would disagree completely. Now, whether he is telling the truth? Who knows.
The problem with that Eddie is that he represents about half the coaches.
Starting any sentence out with "the guy on Finebaum" = EPIC FAIL.
We aren't going to hire Houston Nutt, I wouldn't get too upset even speculating the possiblity.
Brian Kelly was really good in Division II, moved to Central Michigan, was very good there, moved to Cincinnati and has that team in the BCS.
The school is building him a $10 million indoor facility which is really saying something at UC. Football isn't a priority.
The two NFL guys I know are united: The best coach being discussed in connection with Auburn is Kelly.
What is that worth to Auburn officials? Who knows.
Agreed FSJ. I guy can wish.
Heading home for the day, check back in with you guys in a few.
Don't hire anyone without me.
I believe Auburn officials are baffons. They are doing Auburn proud right now.
Eddie,
I would prefer to avoid a Sexton coach too. Sure seems to have some nasty tactics, that guy.
Now a Sexy coach, or better yet a Coach with a Sexy Wife (ala Kiffen) would be awesome.
I'll go take a nap....something will happen again.
Tennessee....
I know a little about the first probation since it originated up here in Gadsden with the Gene Jelks thing.
Kelly would be a "Tresselesque" hire - go to the lower ranks and find someone who has enjoyed success and knows about winning.
The idea is growing on me...
Eddie,
The more I think about it the more I buy what Jay said the other day..
Tubs took Auburn by surprise by pushing the issue.
IMO, they wanted to string him along for a while so that they could do what you are hearing now behind the scenes.
Anybody got any money? Buy LINE - oil and gas producer in the midwest that is fully hedged thru 2010 and now yields 23%. Collect your 23% over the next 2 years and by then the recession will be over and the share price will have doubled.
Do your on dd. Anybody that would take a stock tip from a stranger on a message board is crazy. Add other disclaimers as needed.
Everytime I think about the possibility of looking down on the Auburn sidelines and seeing Nutt standing there biting his fingernails I almost start to cry. What the hell are they thinking? Do they really think this is the BEST person for Auburn?
Nutt about to get a raise per the Tupelo newspaper.
Wow. Gene Jelks, that's right. Now there's a name I hadn't heard in a while. I don't remember the details at all anymore.
And I don't know the "dude" I speak of either. It's like a Spaceballs-degree-of-reference, which is worth about squat.
What hotties made it on the Roundtable air today?
FSJ- No doubt that was what they were doing, but they had to bet on Tubs pushing the issue when they hung him out there. Piss poor in my opinion. I gave them too much credit for having someone ready to step in. I think this place will be outraged if Nutt is announced HC.
Hey Eddie - you probably know Jimbo better than anybody here; what do you think of him as our coach?
If he's the guy Lowder wants, he's probably who we get.
This whole Nutt thing seems to be a Sexton ploy from the start. I bet it started by Sexton pimping Nutt to Auburn and Auburn responding with interest. From there the spin machine works, and big raise for Nutt and more power at Ole Miss. As for Auburn, look like fools for saying we were interested.
Nutt is a clone of Tuberville, with a little less class. He's a consistent 8 game winner with a 9 win season considered a success. The guy couldn't even win the SEC with McFadden, Jones and Peyton Hillis in the backfield. If Nutt is hired it would smell of being a "safe" hire. I thought Jay Jacobs said money would be no object. If money is no object then how is it that you come out of the gate with Nutt as your top choice? This is so typical of Auburn it is disgusting. It's also indicative of the inferiority complex many in the Auburn family carry. They talk about "fit". I don't care about a good "fit", I care about hiring a coach who can win. LSU didn't want Nutt, Nebraska didn't want Nutt, even Arkansas didn't want Nutt. Hiring Nutt would do nothing but divide the Auburn family between those who accept complacency and those who want to win. As Bear Bryant once said: "I ain't never been nothing but a winner". I wish the pitiful Auburn administration had that mentality.
Jelks did some "work" for a businessman-(I use the word loosely) named Harold Simmons. Mr. Simmons got divorced and the checks he wrote to Jelks came out in the divorce proceedings. Some Auburn fan (he writes a blog) was involved with it somehow too, but I can't remember his name.
Mon, FJS, Scottie B and James in Bham
Jimbo is a super nice guy, but I don't think he is the superstar OC that everyone wants him to be. Jimbo offenses have been greatly aided by great defense. When the defense is down, the offense is average at best.
As a person, he is a good guy. I don't believe he is a players coach by any means, not that it's a bad thing. I believe being under Saban really helped Jimbo. I don't think he gets a dime of experience being where he is now. Too me, he is the biggest gamble of all.
FSJ- Auburn fan involved with Jelks, Alabama fan involved with Ramsey. Funny how karma works.
Dang! I missed hearing James and Scottie B.! grrrrr
And thanks for the response, AU1.
:-)
We could sure use another Albert Means right about now.
Oh I wasn't on the air Mon, apparently I just got some love - which of course I missed having stepped out of the office.
Denny, it only took 3 ABC stores to find but I have my decanter of Eagle Rare for the SECCG tomorrow.
I will toast FSJ and then pray for Superman to leap D-Linemen in a single bound.
AUCYF: Absolutely on the money.
Eddie on Jimbo, ditto.
Eddie, weren't you a mgr for AU? Were you there when either of the Zapp brothers were mgrs?
I hope Florida wins by 30 and then loses by 30 in the title game.
Thanks Eddie. I think I could be ok with him, especially if he brings in some good AU guys as assistants.
Griff- I was a manager on the team, and I was there from Fall 1996 to spring of 2000.
I wasn't there with the Zapp brothers, or at least I don't recall it.
If Peterson to Miss.St. is true, then I am confident we are going to totally botch this coaching search. I don't know why, but I don't like it
News Flash!
Cecil Hurt picks Alabama 31-30 over Florida. Shocking..unbiased opinion.
What is Finebaum's love affair with Cecil Hurt?
And another thing, Houston Nutt!!!!????
Klaus:
Cecil has picked Alabama in every game this year.
Pretty good record I would say.
IMO, Jay and Cecil are the two best in this state.
Eddie they were there from 89-93...roommates of mine.
Gang- I'm out to late tonight. Hope we have more clarification later, but I doubt it.
I GOT A SHOUT-OUT ON THE ROUNDTABLE? SWEEEEET!
I have an idea how we can put this to rest. Jay G, just post the following cell phone #'s.
Mike Leach
Brian Kelly
Butch Davis
Houston Nutt
Paul Johnson
Jimbo Fisher
Each of the HOTTIES can pick one to call and ask them to tell us what's up?
A friend mentioned to me last night that a friend of his played for Auburn while Fisher was there. His friend thinks Fisher is an idiot. Those were his exact words, FWIW.
Will, you forgot Gary Patterson
I just want Cecil to get a pulse.
This eliminates Cecil:
"One could imagine Nick Saban, four-and-a-half games into the season, weeping a silent tear, saddened, like Alexander the Great, that there was no challenge against which his greatness, and that of his football team, could be measured."
Will, I pick Paul Johnson...
Couldn't take the time to read 341 posts, so i apologize if this theory has been posted:
The "PTB" started the "Nutt" rumor so that whoever they hire will seem sooo much better that the naysayers will be relieved and thus placated. Just a theory.
ok....which hottie is this?
I'm guessing Kristina.
HOTTIE?
I can see our guys getting the order to go out and hire Paul Johnson and not even know who he is, assume they meant Bobby Johnson and go to Vandy and hire him.
Never ever will you see me rocking a camo hat. Not that there's anything wrong with that...just not my bag.
FSJ,
Looks more like DnATL to me!
He was posting his own signs around town yesterday - go look at the pics on facebook.
Jay-G,
What is your gut feeling about all of this? They already have someone? or Are they trying and getting turned down?
I think Jacobs needs to look into Aubie as well.
He shows up in this Capital One Mascot challenge every year, but never seems to win the big one.
The WKU Hilltopper has a trophy from there, but no Aubie. It's time he steps his game up too.
I've always thought this was FSJ:
Fake Steve Jobs
(naughty language warning)
LOL Michael
Thank you, Michael.
This reminds me of Michael...
michael?
you guys need new material
Kristina would never, ever, ever wear camo. She's too classy for that.
But Monica..............
Wait -- It just hit me that if Tuberville is going to help in this process what's his relationship with Butch Davis?
Didn't he and Davis coach together at Miami?
Ok...someone please tell me isnt it strange that all of our asst. coaches are out recruiting for a place they wont be working at soon or being paid at in 6 months. Someone please explain this. Please no Nutt or Leach, !!!!!!
So Houston Nutt gets a big raise from Ole Miss today, after rumors of him going to Auburn come up.
I guess someone was doing their job well.
Davis and Tub were both at Miami together, you are correct.
PDWT,
Some of them are probably working hoping to be able to stick around with the new HC.
Others are probably just keeping their contacts out there for whatever job they may move along to.
However, I didn't know they were still out there recruiting.
you found my youtube channel, fsj! Doh well.
WAR EAGLE RK, YEA JUST READ IT ON SCOUT, READ IT, ITS SO WEIRD.
After that, Butch began a successful 15-year association with Jimmy Johnson, first as a receivers and tight ends coach at Oklahoma State, then later as defensive line coach at the University of Miami. During that time, the Hurricanes won the 1987 National Championship.
15 years with Jimmie Johnson at Ok St, Miami & Dallas?
Who's CTT's mentor in the biz?
Guys, the Wiki on Butch Davis' early years are facinating:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Davis#Early_years
Look at the players recruited section. Some of those names - my goodness.
I don't have a Scout membership, so can't read it.
So would Auburn really pay a 2.5mil buyout to get Jimbo Fisher?
Chris in Inverness, I'm glad you changed your profile pic. I had no idea who that guy was with the cigarette.
I feel much less stupid now.
Wow, PMarsh has stated if he was a betting man, he would put his money on Nutt or Fisher.
Remind me never to take betting tips from PMarsh.
I haven't heard Butch Davis mentioned by anyone other than us bloggers, so I don't think that's happening Chris.
Hahahaha -- hmmm.
Not a big Soprano's fan B?
Wareagle RK, me either, its the one free article on the tigers page
I know his agent is Jimmy Sexton which means that may be on purpose.
Davis is said to have had a riff with Saban in the recent past.
I'm a bit perplexed it hasn't been mentioned at all.
I have a question for the HABOTN nation. I understand Jimmy Sexton represents Houston Nutt. What other coach that could or would be interested in coming to Auburn is on his client list?
just something to think about....
That I know of Sexton has:
Tuberville
Spurrier
Fulmer
Nutt
Beamer
Saban
Please someone tell me what gets people excited about jimbo fisher? Why would he leave FSU? He is there HCIW.
Add Muschamp, Jimbo Fishe, and Kiffin to that list
FSJ is a lot more well-spoken than cowboyintn1979.
Speaking of cowboy, I see a Darwin Award in his future.
Fisher would probably leave FSU to be a HC at Auburn rather than sit around and wait for Bowden to retire/die.
From what I understand Fisher really likes the Auburn area and his wife is an AU grad and would love to come back here as the HC.
Cowboy says a lot of good stuff, you are just prejudiced because of the accent.
http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/kscarbinsky.ssf?/base/sports/1225181758150710.xml&coll=2
Per Scarbinsky -- include Butch Davis.
Also, Bill Parsells
CTT's mentor -- I asked him this earlier in the year -- is Larry Lacewell.
Also, new thread up.
Cowboy and fsj - brokeback mountin'?
dnatl...
Don't make me call you out on the roundtable..
:-)
