Rolling along on a Friday

Hey everyone. I see that you're all very excited about the possibility of Houston Nutt being Auburn's next head coach.

Is it possible? Yes.

I had a few knowledgeable people relay that name yesterday. The Advertiser forbids me from using unnamed sources, so that really limits what I can report about stuff like that. I'm working to get in touch with Nutt's People and get an official, on-the-record comment about his situation.

It's going to be a murky period here for a while. It's difficult to distill reliable information from fake stuff -- it often sounds the same -- and getting the legit stuff on the record adds a little more complexity.

We like complexity here at the HABOTN. It's all about love of the game ...

I've generally stayed out of this discussion, but I'm not going to any longer...

I find it amusing that when Tuberville was whipping Shula's arse in state it was because he was outworking him.

However, when Saban is whipping Tuberville's arse, it's because he is buying players.

Interesting how that works.

Spurrier, even in his prime his idea of recruiting was talking to the kid and saying "Boy, you're gonna be a Gator, right?" Usually the kid would say yes...if they waivered, he never talked to them again and moved on to the next big time recruit who wanted to go to Florida.

That didn't work so well trying to bring kids to South carolina.

Spurrier was like that with a lot of recruits at Florida.

That's why Andrew Zow didn't go there after being a Florida fan his whole life.

There are plenty of other recruits through the years who said the same thing about him. For the most part Spurrier let Florida recruit itself.

Petrino and Johnson have only been at their respective jobs for one year, and Butch Davis for two. Of those, Petrino seems like the only one that would up and move on in such a short timeframe, and he is, well, less than desirable from a loyalty standpoint. It seems like nobody who is really good is on the market -- we waited too late in the year to make the transition.

If we can't get a great one, I say we hire either Zook or Orgeron to a 3-year contract. We take our lumps until the cupboard is well-stocked, then prior to the end of year 3 we hire the best guy on the market at that time.

Do you people watch football? Houston Nutt took Arkansas (Arkansass!!!) to the SECCG as many times as our beloved Tubs. He (once again) beat Tubs this year with lesser talent.

Spurrier for the most part isn't an active recruiter, he's much like Tub in that aspect.

For Spurrier to recruit well at Auburn, he'll need to hire some great assistants who are top recruiters.

I must admit, I've developed a deep hatred of Saban over the last week due primarily to his sideline tirade about how bad he wanted to stick it to AU, followed by a story on a topic-long-dead-but-just-found-by-me-in-a-link-from-the-JCCW-this-morning about how many more scholarship players he had to cut than any other coach in the world due to his win-at-all-costs-f-everyone-except-myself mentality. Until this week, I pretty much just respected what a marvelous product he puts on the field.

Anyway, despite my newfound hatred, I think it would be the most awesomest hire ever for AU to sign the jackleg to a $6M contract this evening and announce him as the next HC tomorrow around noon*. Remember how bent out of shape the Bama fans got when Tot hired Brother Bill? Okay, now multiply that outrage by itself roughly 10 million times.

It's like ninja thinkin'... I will use my enemy's strength against him. Just sayin'... it would be good times.

I said this a day or two ago, but I have a friend who is on the football staff of another SEC school. He says everyone in the SEC knows Saban is cheating. Add that to what the Clemson coach said about Julio earlier this year, and now to what the coach's wife said, and I would call that smoke. Certainly, it is possible that these are just rumors being passed around between coaches and are totally false, but this is an Auburn message board. We have little hope that Auburn will be good for the next few years. FSJ, can't we at least have hope that bama will go on probation? It's that sort of hope that lets me get out of bed in the morning.

Also note that I don't know that Saban cheats or is even aware of cheating. I imagine it is boosters.

(although my friend also says that the NCAA won't go after bama again because they want bama to be strong because it is good for college football. I find that hard to believe, but who knows)

Guys, I've been out of the loop for a few days, but I still believe Brian Kelly is the right hire. Don't be so ignorant as to discount him just because he's at a smaller school. Urban Meyer was too, and I'd say he's turned out pretty well. And Bob Stoops had zero head coaching experience when he got the Oklahoma job. So say it with me...BRIAN KELLY! YES WE CAN!!!

Yeah, sorry FSJ, but I hold out the same hope that the Sabanator is cheating the M4AU does.

I don't think Saban is, because from where I sit it just appears he needs little sleep and places little value on personal relationships beyond what they can do for him. He is a single minded college football machine, and I don't think I would enjoy spending time with him. I think he's a jerk. But a cheat? No, not really.

But a buddy of mine told me a while back that he knows some dude that was responsible for turning Bama in to the NCAA when they went on probation the first time, and the dude told him that "things are going to blow up in Alabama's face again soon". Given how most Alabama fans behave (including my dad), I have to hold out some glimmer of hope that there is some major trouble looming for the Bama football program, whether Saban is responsible for it or whether he just suffers from collateral damage.

This whole Nutt thing seems to be a Sexton ploy from the start. I bet it started by Sexton pimping Nutt to Auburn and Auburn responding with interest. From there the spin machine works, and big raise for Nutt and more power at Ole Miss. As for Auburn, look like fools for saying we were interested.

2:37 PM
Blogger AUCYF said...

Nutt is a clone of Tuberville, with a little less class. He's a consistent 8 game winner with a 9 win season considered a success. The guy couldn't even win the SEC with McFadden, Jones and Peyton Hillis in the backfield. If Nutt is hired it would smell of being a "safe" hire. I thought Jay Jacobs said money would be no object. If money is no object then how is it that you come out of the gate with Nutt as your top choice? This is so typical of Auburn it is disgusting. It's also indicative of the inferiority complex many in the Auburn family carry. They talk about "fit". I don't care about a good "fit", I care about hiring a coach who can win. LSU didn't want Nutt, Nebraska didn't want Nutt, even Arkansas didn't want Nutt. Hiring Nutt would do nothing but divide the Auburn family between those who accept complacency and those who want to win. As Bear Bryant once said: "I ain't never been nothing but a winner". I wish the pitiful Auburn administration had that mentality.

I have an idea how we can put this to rest. Jay G, just post the following cell phone #'s.

Mike Leach
Brian Kelly
Butch Davis
Houston Nutt
Paul Johnson
Jimbo Fisher

Each of the HOTTIES can pick one to call and ask them to tell us what's up?

Blogger CovingtonTigerFan said...

A friend mentioned to me last night that a friend of his played for Auburn while Fisher was there. His friend thinks Fisher is an idiot. Those were his exact words, FWIW.

I just want Cecil to get a pulse.

This eliminates Cecil:

"One could imagine Nick Saban, four-and-a-half games into the season, weeping a silent tear, saddened, like Alexander the Great, that there was no challenge against which his greatness, and that of his football team, could be measured."

Will, I pick Paul Johnson...

Couldn't take the time to read 341 posts, so i apologize if this theory has been posted:

The "PTB" started the "Nutt" rumor so that whoever they hire will seem sooo much better that the naysayers will be relieved and thus placated. Just a theory.

ok....which hottie is this?

I'm guessing Kristina.

HOTTIE?

I can see our guys getting the order to go out and hire Paul Johnson and not even know who he is, assume they meant Bobby Johnson and go to Vandy and hire him.

Never ever will you see me rocking a camo hat. Not that there's anything wrong with that...just not my bag.

FSJ,

Looks more like DnATL to me!

He was posting his own signs around town yesterday - go look at the pics on facebook.

Jay-G,
What is your gut feeling about all of this? They already have someone? or Are they trying and getting turned down?

3:17 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think Jacobs needs to look into Aubie as well.

He shows up in this Capital One Mascot challenge every year, but never seems to win the big one.

The WKU Hilltopper has a trophy from there, but no Aubie. It's time he steps his game up too.

Wait -- It just hit me that if Tuberville is going to help in this process what's his relationship with Butch Davis?

Didn't he and Davis coach together at Miami?

3:30 PM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

Ok...someone please tell me isnt it strange that all of our asst. coaches are out recruiting for a place they wont be working at soon or being paid at in 6 months. Someone please explain this. Please no Nutt or Leach, !!!!!!

3:30 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

So Houston Nutt gets a big raise from Ole Miss today, after rumors of him going to Auburn come up.

I guess someone was doing their job well.

3:30 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Davis and Tub were both at Miami together, you are correct.

3:31 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

PDWT,

Some of them are probably working hoping to be able to stick around with the new HC.

Others are probably just keeping their contacts out there for whatever job they may move along to.

However, I didn't know they were still out there recruiting.

3:32 PM
Blogger michael said...

you found my youtube channel, fsj! Doh well.

Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

After that, Butch began a successful 15-year association with Jimmy Johnson, first as a receivers and tight ends coach at Oklahoma State, then later as defensive line coach at the University of Miami. During that time, the Hurricanes won the 1987 National Championship.

15 years with Jimmie Johnson at Ok St, Miami & Dallas?

Who's CTT's mentor in the biz?

3:38 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Guys, the Wiki on Butch Davis' early years are facinating:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Davis#Early_years

Look at the players recruited section. Some of those names - my goodness.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I don't have a Scout membership, so can't read it.

Blogger McLovin said...

So would Auburn really pay a 2.5mil buyout to get Jimbo Fisher?

3:41 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Chris in Inverness, I'm glad you changed your profile pic. I had no idea who that guy was with the cigarette.

I feel much less stupid now.

Wow, PMarsh has stated if he was a betting man, he would put his money on Nutt or Fisher.

Remind me never to take betting tips from PMarsh.

I know his agent is Jimmy Sexton which means that may be on purpose.

Davis is said to have had a riff with Saban in the recent past.

I'm a bit perplexed it hasn't been mentioned at all.

3:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have a question for the HABOTN nation. I understand Jimmy Sexton represents Houston Nutt. What other coach that could or would be interested in coming to Auburn is on his client list?

just something to think about....

3:45 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

That I know of Sexton has:

Tuberville
Spurrier
Fulmer
Nutt
Beamer
Saban

Please someone tell me what gets people excited about jimbo fisher? Why would he leave FSU? He is there HCIW.

Add Muschamp, Jimbo Fishe, and Kiffin to that list

FSJ is a lot more well-spoken than cowboyintn1979.

Speaking of cowboy, I see a Darwin Award in his future.

3:51 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Fisher would probably leave FSU to be a HC at Auburn rather than sit around and wait for Bowden to retire/die.

From what I understand Fisher really likes the Auburn area and his wife is an AU grad and would love to come back here as the HC.
