Sunday update

Hey everyone. I hope you're enjoying your NFL Sunday. Or your Christmas Shopping Sunday. Or whatever you're doing this fine Sunday.

I talked earlier today with DeMarco McNeil, the former Auburn defensive tackle who spent the 2008 season as the team's graduate assistant. He spent two seasons playing for Gene Chizik, spent a season coaching at Auburn and grew up in Mobile.

Could his affable personality and lower Alabama roots make him the kind of dogged recruiter Chizik needs in lower Alabama?

McNeil is hoping.

``I'm just waiting to see what happens," McNeil said. ``I love Auburn. I'd love to stay at Auburn."

Chizik is expected to begin taking tangible steps toward assembling his staff this week. He spent the past six days -- the first six days of his tenure -- trying to repair damage done to the program's recruiting efforts.

Tuberville's sudden departure and the subsequent fallout created tension that Chizik has been trying to soothe. He has met with high school coaches in at least four states since being hired on Dec. 15.

Ronnie is a Pro Bowler this year, and he was on his way to being one last year before he got hurt.

According to your line of reasoning, someone as successful as OJ Simpson would be considered a "disappointment." Oh, wait, you may be on to something...

Jason Campbell is the player out of the 5 that were drafted back in 2005 that has struggled the most.

Carnell has been injured, Brown & Ratliff are both Pro Bowlers, Carlos Rogers is a good CB, but Campbell hasn't developed like I figured he would.

I know a lot of people on here were high on him earlier this year, but the guy averages around 7 yards per completion and the WR's are getting frustrated that he doesn't air the ball out.

I wish Ronnie played for someone other than Miami. But, they did have a better season this year than last. They just don't air the Dolphins that much on Charter cable in Bham.

Agreed RK and he is the one I want to succeed the most. He looks like he is about to get over the hump only to go back into his shell. Maybe, just maybe, 2nd year of Zorn will have him where he needs to be, but I wonder how much longer Redskin nation and coaches will be patient.

I've noticed something lately in HABOTNville ... we've been worrying about this that and the other.

Quit worrying and start working.

There are other coaches in the world than the ones that coached here the last 10 seasons, and we're gonna find some of them.

I've seen slippage. We're getting back to that hoping and wishing attitude, and that is unacceptable.

We will return. We will run the ball. We will pass the ball. We will have effective special teams. We will knock the snot out of people on defense.

We will hate Bama. And we will beat them. Sooner than most people think.

That's not a Christmas wish. It's not a threat. It's just what's gonna happen.

Deal with it.

Merry Christmas. Even to FSJ.

Harrison, I took a semester off and worked up there when I was at Auburn. 2002, I think. There were a couple of good restaurants on the mountain when I was there, and it appears that there are more options now. Some of them were terrible, though, so hopefully they've fixed that, but I'd steer clear of Aunti Pastas or the Shavers Center. Its pretty easy to tell which are cheap and which are decent.

Nightlife is available, but the quality really depends on who is on the mountain. I've seen the bars hopping go from hopping to lame in less than a week. Find anyone with an Aussie accent and ask them what is the best place to go (they're there on their summer vacation, and tend to be party hounds all winter). Comedy club has some decent acts come through.

Thanks Mon and Peter:i know the australians are allover the ski resorts. we usually go to vail, breckenridge and have been to whsitler (which was spectacular). There are more australian accents than american it seems. and a southern accent in canada was a total shock to mostof them

Hope the Nix report is false. If he is hired the goal must be to go from 110th in scoring offense to 107. Loved him as qb at AU, but as OC?

best road game, for me, was 1982 vs. fla. we (barely--and were robbed) lost, but my dad, my uncle and myself headed down there together. While looking for a place to buy some beer, we see this guy walking out of a place with a keg of beer, like the thing weighed 12 ounces. intrigues, we spoke with him. he was (the former great white hope boxer) jerry cooney's brother. he invited us over to his place (some frat, i forget which) and we partied, went to the game, partied some more. great time (except for the score--linoel james recovered that onside kick, dammit)

Hicks Poor was the coolest Auburn player name.

Nix as OC wouldn't be bad. At least he wouldn't be showing others how to beat us.

Bower is also an interesting choice. He definitely got Tubervilled before getting Tubervilled was cool. He is a good coach.

As for the best Auburn game, Punt Bama Punt is it. Sorry, but there isn't another game that comes close. It is the only Iron Bowl that I thought we lost after the game, only to realize that second block wasn't an instant replay later. It don't get no better than that.

The second best has to be that interception game against LSU. I do believe that LSU's offense that game is what Dubose copied. I was a stroke of stupidity that will live throughout time.

The 1990 Peach Bowl was on ESPN Classic today ... of course, I tuned in time to see E--- R----- get beat on a pass play.

Saw some old favorites and not so favorites.

... barefoot punter Richie Nell, who tried to give the game away by dropping a snap.

... clutch receiver Dale "Hack" Overton.

... Herbert "The Weapon" Casey, who took off two out of every three plays.

... the late Corey Lewis, who recovered a fumble after Stan White's go-ahead TD. Nice guy.

... Pedro Cherry ... Corey Barlow ... Lectron ... Victor Hall ... David Rocker ... Jim Von Wyl.

The beginning of the end of the Dye Era ... until its restoration in 2009. (Mildly kidding, I think).

Worst Road Game,

We went to gainsville ranked #1, I think 84-85? It rained like three hells and FLA beat the bleep out of us. That was the worst ride home. Hungover-Dejected. The pitts, I never forger it.

My most vivid memory at being at the stadium still has to be the first Home Iron Bowl, when Reggie hit Wright down the sideline. I don't know why but I can still see that like it happened yesterday.

I went to both LSU and UGA during the 2003 season because we were going to win the national championship that year. Things are fuzzy but I think welost by a combined total of 162-14

Daryl Electron Williams would have been phenom if he had not gotten used up in highschool. Not many people realize how talented he was and that he was just a shell of the player by the time he got Auburn.

I loved the Barfield days in some ways because with Brooks/Cribbs/Andrews you could count on one of them busting a run for 50 or 60 yards just about ever game. Barfield wasn't a great coach, but he wasn't as bad as some think. He gave us a couple of good seasons and the team he handed off to Dye wasn't horrible.

By the way, we play Ball State next season. They were 12-1 this season. Any chance for us getting upset there? They actually looked better than Buffalo, although they did some stupid things to give the game away. That Ball State offense was very impressive.
