Happy New Year from the HABOTN

Hey everyone. Welcome to 2009!

I plan to share our silly-crazy December numbers with you all in a bit. We broke every record available in terms of traffic. I never thought we would gauge pageviews by the 100,000s, but that's where we are.

Lots of football on the tube today. What are you watching?

There were no wide receivers under 6' left for USC. We snapped all those up before anyone else could get them.

CEJohnson has a 1 mill buyout and if we pay that and let Steele go to Clemson we need to lose. If we can get him without a buyout more power to us! Why not consider a guy like Ken Norton Jr.?

Carroll is 81-9 ... that's pretty much in the Tiger Woods neighborhood.

I'm not a fan ... but they were hosed out of the game in 2003 ... won in 2004 (and would have beaten us, but by not as much as they hammered Oklahoma) ... should have punted in 2005 or if the safety INTs the pass he should have ... they'd probably be at 3 in a row there.

I'm pretty dadgum impressed with them right now.

7:51 PM

I think the bigger loss is Kevin Steele's recruiting more so than his coaching. People keep saying Clemson is a lateral move, but when your having to share the DC with Kirby Smart and Saban your not exactly getting to run the show. Saban is such a micro manager people have problems working for him.

Thanks for the heads-up on the news. Now I can prepare myself for not hearing him announced.

Mon--I was just saying the same thing to my wife.

The Doobie's? Really? I mean this really makes FOX and the Orange Bowl look pretty silly. I mean, if you can't get someone relevant, then couldn't we just have the school's bands or something?

'Course, I'm a AU Band alum, so I guess I would say that. Hell, they should get the FAMU band--I bet they would rock the house!

9:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We really do need Rodney Garner. We got back a good recruiter with Willis, but we are still without several key recruiters: Gran, Price, and Knox. That is a lot of recruiting talent to lose.

9:36 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Remember the Orange Bowl is the no. 2 bowl for Miami this year ... so they are probably low-balling this one.

Barry had on the the chalkboard colored thick striped suit with a different looking striped shirt with a floral tie ... it looked like three people drew items out of a bag for him to wear.

You wouldn't find that outfit at Jos. A. Bank. Harumph.

Scottie ... my son, Turbo Prop, is going to try out for the band ... send your recommendation because if you're a Hottie, you must be held in high esteem.

I also see where K Steele is expected to be named D coordinator for Clemson. May have already been discussed, but history repeats. No one wants to stay w/ Saban. I had even heard, before this developement, that Kirby Smart may come to AU. Have absolutely no confidence in that, but I heard it none the less.

10:14 PM

Pmarsh may be right. Or maybe not.

I haven't been able to establish Ellis Johnson's "candidacy" just yet. That doesn't mean he isn't a candidate. Just saying I haven't heard that.

10:22 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jet, Muschamp had actually agreed to come, but heard he got cold feet and backed out. Texas may have got to him, gave him some mo money. Could have also been some shenanigans w/ his agent, Sexton.

10:23 PM
Blogger j-z said...

Didn't the Orange Bowl have the whole Ashlee Simpson debacle a few years ago? You have to admit that the Doobie's are a step up from that.

If Ellis Johnson is the guy, I'm ok with that. We need some recruiting help though. Any ideas for when the Garner thing goes away completely?

10:24 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Sponge, I believe you are right in re Muschamp.

J ... it's a BCS Bowl, not the Alabama National Fair ... better to let the bands play than to pull out a band that was a has been when you were in your prime.

10:26 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jay. Bama will lose a good recruiter if Steele goes to Clemson. Steele lived in Prattville when I was a kid. My best friend took him yard when we were 10 or 11. Steele was a dominant pitcher then.... but I'm talkin little league.

Also, could be Steele may be leaving just ahead of the dreaded PLI bama is going to get....

10:27 PM
Blogger j-z said...

Easy now....I happen to think I'm still in my prime. Sort of.

I agree with the marching band thing too. I think it would be better if all the bowls did that. It's a football game for God's sake, not a shriner's convention. At least they didn't lip sync. Much...

10:29 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

We know Saban will lose assistants. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that McElwain was looking, too.

10:30 PM

Sponge, is that wishful thinking about the PLI or is it something related to the Smith deal?

10:32 PM

i. That A Simpson could sing, couldn't she. LOL. We are in a day when marketing can turn some teenie bopper w/ no talent into a star. guess that's the power of lip sync and technology.

McIlwain deserves to stet up to the pay window ... from UAT or the highest bidder.

10:34 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

i. Nothing to do w/ Smith. Lot of stuff going on since Saban hired. Lot of smoke. guess we will see, but keep your ears open in coming months.

McElwain, what an excellent job he did for the tide. Offensively, they looked like a completely new team. Really took advantage of their strengths. Whole team was coached very well. Helped that AU, UT, Clemson all tanked this year.

10:41 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jay. Lebo's Tigers look much better. think they have what it takes to win 50% of their SEC games? If not, think this is it for Lebo?

10:44 PM

coaching is all about using the parts of the puzzle the right way.

UAT has great TEs, and they became focal points ... it helped free up julio and the running game ... and a senior QB usually helps.

Kirby Smart may replace Saban at Alabama.

Steele has been leaving since last year. He has not been recruiting much this year. Last year he was the primary recruiter for the Birmingham area. This year...not so much.

McElwain is about to get a raise I would guess. He's done a very good job.

11:02 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Yea. I was. Turned it to Leno. I was on the bandwagon for the Cincinati coach. They didn't look too good tonight. QB just threw his fourth INT.

Think VT has a chance against the tide next year.

11:03 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

FSJ, Steele was the main guy for bama in the Birmingham area. At least for the HS coaches I know. He did a good job w/ Jerrell Harris last year, which set them up to get the rest of that clan this year. of course, Jay Jacobs complete failure that led to Muschamp leaving AU also contributed to that. I think we get Harris if Muschamp stayed.

11:06 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Major Applewhite recruited Gadsden last year. Price was assigned Gadsden for Auburn, I think. They brought Muschamp in late.

Y'all had a chance had Muschamp stayed but it wasn't a slam dunk by any stretch of the imagination. He told the Gadsden coaches and Jerrell that he would't leave Auburn except for a HC position. He left the next week.

11:10 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Lying seems to be standard operating procedure at AU nowadays. Nothing in recruiting is a slam dunk lately. Seems kids make a commit, either publicly or privately, then change their minds with ever increasing regularity. Not talking about AU this year on that, since obviously they would have good reason to waffle w/ our coaching changes. Maybe the kids are just catching up to the coaches in the recruiting game.

11:18 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Yeah, I think VT has a chance against Bama next year. Don't know who to pull for in that game. I swore after the Sugar Bowl in "05 that I would root against VT forever. That was probably the dirtiest game I have ever watched. But rooting for Bama? Kinda like being asked if you want to die by drowning or burning. There is no good choice.

11:19 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

FSJ. You think your running back will opt for NFL? Also, what's the chance the Trent Richardson RB out of florida commit will stick?

11:23 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I can't imagine Coffee being a first rounder, so unless he or his family needs money bad, I expect him back.

As far as Richardson goes, who knows, but I will take my chances with Saban getting him to stick.

One player that may be transferring is Terry Grant who was the #1 back in 2007.

11:37 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Yes. I figured Grant to leave. Saban does a good job of weeding out the non performers. That is, sending them on their way. He never gets any bad press about it. It keeps his scholly's open for new players.

Yeah FSJ, his slashing running style works well with what tUNA runs (their style of spread).

They were in the running for the Brousard guy from LSU a couple years back so it is not unheard of.

It's good to know others are working like myself. Can't believe the UM/TT game starts at 1pm. Don't they know us normal folk don't get off until 5pm?

I'm working, but I've been here since 7 and the phone hasn't rung yet, so I'm gonna take a nap. I hope Jet's meeting at the gym at 6 was with Garner. We need a recruiter ASAP!

jets' last update on Garner was not optimistic. Hopefully, this will change for the better.

Have no idea how reliable this is or not, but this site is reporting that Muschamp does not have a buyout in his "coach-in-waiting" contract at UT.

Interesting.

Muschamp

10:47 AM
Blogger michael said...

Did UT also reserve the right not to hire him? What exactly is this even a contract for?

10:57 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

I don't know michael...Looks like it was a slick way to give him a raise to me...

Neither side seems to be tied to anything really.

And to top it off, Brown doesn't look like he wants to leave to me.

11:01 AM
Blogger Monica said...

There isn't even a contract yet. What a lump of fluff. Who knows what it will look like by the time they sign it - if they ever do.

Hiya Mr. Mobilz! :-)
Working for about another hour-ish.

Blogger Jet said...

I flew back home without Rodney.

Get ready for Elliz and TraZy Rocker, I think. Hearing whispers about another defensive coach but can't say much about it ... hope it's true, it's a good one.

Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

Same here Mon.
Check your email for a notice.

I will be home by Cotton Bowl Time!

We need some "Hot Stove News"

Hi Kathy,
Happy January 2nd to you!

11:21 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Don't mean to be cryptic ... some of this is just reading tea leaves ... other is stuff I've heard from folks I trust. You gotta figure that in 72 hours most everything will be revealed.

11:21 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Jet - The rule is if you can't tell it, don't tease it! You know that!!

11:23 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

Hi Mobilz. Gray and damp in North Alabama on the 2nd day of 2009. Just took the dog to the vet for her annual shots. Sitting back now with HABOTN and a hot cup of coffee waiting for the Cotton Bowl. Back to work on Monday, so I won't be able to participate in HABOTN chatter during the day. I need the job!

11:25 AM
Blogger michael said...

Jet, the rule is you are supposed to sign in as Tim and tell us all what you know.

11:27 AM
Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

Ty Mon!

Jet we need something to talk about why not rumors?

Tell us or we will report you and send the FAA n TSA to visit you after all the hoopla surrounding your dealings (stalking) of CRG!

11:28 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Monica ... I'm like Outback.

No Rules, Just Right.

I said yesterday, I heard 3-4 days ago that Elliz was the choice ... that T. Rocker was likely to come.

All of that makes Rodney unlikely. I think we need to find a way to get him here. Johnson is a very, very good football coach, IMO, so I'm not upset about him or Tracy at all.

There are a limited number of seats left. It just makes sense that most of this will be done in the next 48-72 hours.

11:30 AM
Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

ok Jet.....

Spill it give us something... tea leaves are good for now!

11:30 AM
Blogger michael said...

I think I should be made the "CEO In-waiting" of my company. If I am not CEO within 20 years, they have to give me $8,000,000. If I leave before then, I have to give them $1.75

11:31 AM
Blogger j-z said...

Ok...so let's see how all of this fits together.

Ellis Johnson would probably coach LB's. One would assume that Rocker would coach D line. Where does that leave Willis and the mystery coach?

Outback has rules, Jet. I tested that one time when I tried to walk in and have my dinner naked. The manager comes out and demands I put some clothes on, and I am all like, "That sounds an awful lot like a rule to me!" Zing!!!

What...Rumors of another coach. Why wasn't I informed? Dye knows I have to approve all hires.

11:33 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Willis would coach DEs ... mystery coach ... outstanding recruiter, coaches DBs, has been a coordinator ...

11:33 AM
Blogger michael said...

Will Muschamp?

11:35 AM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Ha! Muschamp changed his mind. Now he has to come back as a DB coach. That'll teach him to mess w/ JJ.

11:35 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have all this figured out. After flirting with LSU and apparently going to Tennessee, Orgeron will show up at Auburn.

11:37 AM
Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

TY Jet,
I was about to say that...

Koonz to come n coach DB's?

11:37 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Why do you think I've given up on
Rodney so easily?

Yes, it's my first true love, BOOM!

No, sadly, it's not. But it's a good coach. I hope it comes true.

11:38 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't think so, Mobilz

11:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

So, maybe Pat Dye is wanting to coach him some defense?

11:39 AM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Ellis coached outside LB's at several of his stops, so Willis could still coach inside LB's. What AU needs most is a top notch QB coach. Hope Malzahn can do it, but if he can't, we need to get one.
