More commentary from Tuesday

Hey everyone. As I noted in earlier comments, I will not be attending Gene Chizik's Clichéfest this afternoon.

In lieu of that, please read some interesting things said by players on Tuesday.

  • WR Quindarius Carr on the spotty depth at his position: "There’s not that many out there. It’s a fast-paced offense so we’re constantly going back and forth. We don’t have that much of a break. We’re just getting into conditioning. There’s only like three or four of us. It’s alright so far."

**HABOTN NOTE**: Non-injured scholarship receivers is a group that currently includes Carr, Tim Hawthorne, Darvin Adams, Derek Winter and Philip Pierre-Louis.

  • QB Kodi Burns predicting his run responsibilities in Gus Malzahn's offense: "The quarterback definitely in this offense has to be able to run the ball. I will run some in this offense as well. I don't know if it will be as much as last year, but the quarterback in this offense definitely has to run the ball."

  • WR Tim Hawthorne on things that are different with this new group of coaches: "It’s too early right now, but, overall, there’s a lot more structure. The coaches know what they’re going to teach and they know what they want us to learn. They have a set plan. I guess it’s more comfortable that way."

  • LB Josh Bynes on defensive coordinator Ted Roof and his linebacking background: "Look at him. He looks like a linebacker. (Hearty guffaws all around) He's got the big legs, big upper body. From working with him, he's been a very very good coach and he's doing the things possible to get us better on defense as linebackers. He wants us more physical and get us instead of just being there and being a guy getting blocked. It's about us making an impression on the offense that 'Yeah, we're going to come at you hard and come at you fast and come at you physical on every play.'"

  • G Mike "Big Snacks" Berry on the Tigers' new offense: "Compared to the old offense, we're probably going to run the ball. Grimes, the first day we met him, he told us he wants us to be the toughest O-line in the nation. I'm glad we're getting back to running the ball."

JC= Jason Campbell...sorry

Blogger Seanzie said...

I hear Jason Campbell might not be part of their future plans Prowler, so there might be multiple deals on the table.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Word that I heard was a straight up Cutler for Campbell trade. If this is true how many OC's would campbell have worked under in as many year? 8 in 8 years?

1:43 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

All things considered Campbell has been largely successful. I'm sure both parties would come out for the better. Cutler working for a guy that loves to bring in big ticket players that don't produce and Denver wants a guy that just wants to play football and be humble. Sounds like a great trade to me.

1:45 PM
Blogger Prowler said...

I read that Campbell's skills would not work well with what McDaniel wants to run, so I'm not sure how that is going to work out.

Off topic: Monica, I'm about to leave out to Knoxville to see the North Miss Allstars here in a few mins.

On topic:

"All things considered Campbell has been largely successful."

I would tend to disagree. He's been average at best as an NFL starter. He is hesitant to stretch a defense, usually relying on the TE or RB more than on the WR's.

1:49 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I would say Marcus McNeill is the best Auburn player to come out in the last few years.

I was thinking Ronnie Brown (on and off really), but McNeil is a good choice.

I would have to agree with WarEagleRK with regards to Jason Campbell. I was excited when he was the made the starter, but he really hasn't been very impressive.

Best AU NFL players in my opinion:
1.) Ronnie Brown
2.) McNeil - OL from the 2004 class
3.) Carlos Dansby
4.) Jason Campbell
5.) Heath Evans

Cadillac was great his rookie year and hasn't been able to shake the injuries since then, unfortunately.

1:56 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ben Grubbs is another good choice, however nobody notices the OL.

The better question I leave you with as I head to Knoxville, who is the greatest Auburn NFL player of all time?

Off the top of my head, I'll say Kevin Greene (I believe 4th all time in sacks)

There is also Willie Anderson, Takeo Spikes & Tony Richardson who are still in the NFL. Richardson has been there since 1994.

Campbell has been ok but Cutler they say in DC would be a big upgrade for the most important position.

2:04 PM

Joe Montana is the best at hunting bear?

2:04 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Cutler would be an improvement at QB for the Skins in every aspect except attitude.

2:05 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

From Michael Wilbon in The Washington Post.

The best thing that can happen to Jason Campbell is to get the hell away from the Redskins. In Denver, perhaps he'd find the stability the Redskins are totally disinterested in having. Perhaps in Denver, or wherever he winds up, Campbell would have the down-the-field receivers the Redskins aren't smart enough to find or develop.

2:06 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Craig Stevens will obviously be the best NFL player from Auburn. You need look no further than the length of his arms for affirmation.

2:06 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I don't know about Joe Montana and Bear hunting, he'd probably be concerned about the negative effects on his hair.

As Bo says; "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun that slow white dude."

2:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

One more to follow RK's comment.

If there is a difference it's that Campbell isn't a thin-skinned prima donna who refuses to return messages from his generous owner and rookie head coach. But apparently, the Redskins think that kind of insubordination is an asset.

2:07 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I was always told that arm length didn't matter, but that NFL GM's appreciated arm girth.

2:07 PM

A Cutler/Campbell swap would also not improve Washington's thin mustache levels.

No, I was saying Joe Montana was the most successful Auburn grad in the NFL.

Carson was arrested Thursday on charges out of the U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of Alabama. The charges allege he conspired to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana.

Carson, 32, a former Auburn University football player, was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2000. He played defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys during the 2003-2004 season before being cut in 2005.

Wow. Not sure that trade is very good for either team. The Bears coaching staff will make Cutler suck, and they lost two first round picks. Denver will suck for the next couple of years. Oh well.

Dear Leader ...

We knew we could count on our favorite crazy Korean dictator to pay a visit.

Sorry, no nuclear warheads allowed in the HABOTN.

I understand Chris Todd has asked to be traded.

Apparently, Auburn is of a mind to grant him his wish. We're in the market for someone who can shoot free throws. QB skills not necessary.

If that date is legit, Frankenbummer had a pretty meteoric rise to the RoF. You are like the prodigy of HABOTN.

4:47 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

That wasn't my first.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

it was the end of August, I think. I didn't have a blogger id, so it was just the whole fill-in-your-name thing that used to be here...but, yes. RoF was quick for me.

This made me giggle because I just picture how you would look when you are saying it.

We can make it.

no, I remember either Kathy or Kristina laughing at my name right after it...something about it being the best name ever on the HABOTN.

And you responded, "Say my name!"

I'm still trying to find the post that got me deemed Frankenbummer. It was my prediction for the future if Tubbs was fired, but I can't find it. I've been looking for days.

If you print that and fax it to me I'll autograph it and send it back.

This one made me literally LOL. I keep coming back to the HABOTN 1.)for Jay G's great reporting and insight, 2.) I don't get humor like I get from the Hotties anywhere else.

I come here so I don't have to talk to my family.

Combo nuber 11 at the mexican place I ate at in North Carolina was a burrito, taco and enchillada. It ruled.

I'm fearful for the future. Really, really fearful. Rock bottom is not losing out this season. Rock bottom is losing a HC, losing a year of recruits due to program instability, having back to back losing seasons, losing another year of recruits due to having a sucky team, then going 2-10 in 2010. I hope that doesn't happen.

Apparently the Bears get Cutler and a 3rd rounder this year in exchange for Orton, this year's 1st and next year's 1st.

Who is Cutler going to throw to in Chicago? I didn't realize the Bears even played offense.

And is Orton really who Denver wanted? Awful trade all around.
