Sunday chatter

Hey everyone. Sorry again for p00ping out on you yesterday. I'm not one for missing work, believe me, but there was no avoiding Saturday's mess. That's just how it goes sometimes.

The good news: I feel great now. So let's try to get caught up.

The team's second scrimmage, held Saturday morning, appeared to be more defense-oriented this time. Quarterback Kodi Burns engineered a first-drive touchdown, but offensive highlights seemed sporadic after that.

The basic themes gleaned from people who watched the action and a few fellow beat hacks, who were gracious enough to share some insights.
  • S Mike McNeil went down with an injury to his right shin. It is said that the injury included a fracture. The new coaching staff is much more guarded when it comes to discussing injury information.

  • TB Onterio McCalebb broke away for a long touchdown run and impressed with above-average speed/acceleration in all directions.

  • The front seven defenders were allowed to run some stunts/twists that caused a lot of blocking problems. This is how things go during the spring -- particularly when you're infusing new starters (Big Snacks Berry and Andrew McCain) into the fray.

  • Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said he's ready to whittle The Quarterback Race down to two contestants. "That'll be our goal for this last week," he said.

Chris Todd, we hardly knew ye.

Haven't heard a lot about our runningbacks breaking long runs for touchdowns in a while. That is very encouraging. I remember back when we had Andrews, Brooks, and Cribbs. I would always wonder who would break a 40, 50, or 60 yard gain. It seemed like they got at least one every game.

We have needed a breakaway back for a while. Tate has shown flashes, but I don't view him as that type of back. Yea, I know he runs a 4.4/40, but he just doesn't seem to get up to speed and through the whole quick enough.

As a casual(at best) golf fan, I really enjoyed the Tiger-Phil matchup. Even though neither won the tournament, the tension between the two rivals was great. It's funny,I care little about golf, but I watch The Masters most every year.

I was there for the Norman collapse in 1996 ... and this was worse to watch because he lost it in 2 bad -- chip on 17, and drive on 18. Norman was done by the turn.

Nothing he did otherwise was fatal. I am convinced he would have beaten Campbell head to head, but Cabrera is a plodder.

if anyone is bored and up for some fun, check out scout's collegefootballnews. http://cfn.scout.com/2/847637.html they do a mock "what if?" playoff scenario for the last ten years or so. they have utah, excuse me, urban meyer, beating 2004 AU in the first round based off AU's struggles with VT in sugar bowl and the fact that utah team was better than the one that b-smacked bammer this year. apparently they didn't do the research that urban the great is 0-2 against AU with a national champ team and timmy boy. i wonder if they think he could beat his 2004 ute team with either of the uf teams he lost to AU with? The 2004 AU team would have run utah off the field that year. of course they put urban through to the national championship round to face USC and get pounded. I'm still convinced AU is the only undefeated amateur team in 2004 (i'm looking your way mr. bush) and would have given USC a helluva lot better game win or lose than choklahoma. and the 2004 AU team would have beat 2008 bama soundly as well. the media love affair with urban the ahole continues...

Several reports(from rivals so-called insiders) said Trotter had a bad day under pressure. If I had to guess looks like hes the odd man out. Caudle broke several runs while under pressure and looked good on passes under 15 yards but showed happy feet at times and threw another ugly INT that was returned for a TD. Burns did his usual thing, looking bewildered about the act of passing the football. Acording to several, none of the QB's did great under so much pressure, but Caudle did the best. I still think this is a 2 horse race going into fall.

9:39 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Ugly interceptions seem to have been a problem for Caudle during his entire time at AU. I wonder if Malzahn thinks it is a fixable problem, or if that is going to always be an issue for Neil?

I just heard one bizarre news story here in Columbia. It seems a man went into an alcoholics meeting with a gun and tried to rob the people. Surprisingly enough, one of the alcoholics was licensed to carry a gun and had taken the opportunity to exercise that right. Yea, the alcoholic sent the would be robber to the promised land. Say no to gun control.

10:12 PM
Blogger David in Opelika said...

depressed, it depends on why he's throwing the picks. It could be that he's the best timing passer, but getting victimized by receivers turning the wrong way. Hey, it could happen.

10:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The more I read, the more I am convinced that Malzahn has the same problem with the QBs that Franklin had. Both Kodi and Caudle do some good things, but they make too many mental errors. Who is the starter may come down to the style of offense Malzahn chooses to run.

10:15 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

FWIW...A guy from another blog that is allowed in some practices, confirms what Kodi said, which is that the Caudle INT was b/c Harry Adams ran the wrong route and Caudle was throwing to a spot.

10:15 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Maybe it is the poor WR play affecting him. I've stated before, I can't tell if the WR play has made the QB's look bad, or if the QB play has made the WR's look so unimpressive. I have seen Caudle throw some ugly interceptions in the open scrimmages before this spring, but those could have been someone else's fault. That is a fair point to make, though.

10:26 PM
Blogger WDCWE said...

If Caudle can't step up, it seems to me like our offense will look like this: Run Tate, Run Kodi, Run Fannin, Run Tate, Run Fannin,Pass Kodi. Repeat.
I think our line will be much better than last year, so we should look forward to to an improved run game. Even if this basic offense gives us one more touchdown than it averaged last season with a great defense, we could be a 9 win team. If Kodi can find some hint of consistency, we at least have hope against Bama and Ole Miss.

I read Jay's advertiser article on Kodi. It seems that Kodi may have taken a step forward with the opening drive of the scrimmage. I hope this is the case.

One of the things that bothered me about Kodi last season is that he didn't seem to react well when he wasn't in the game every offensive snap. It may be that he just needed to get into a rhythm, but it is concerning.

I am actually pretty excited to see which two QBs Malzahn selects. At the moment Kodi seems the most likely due to his previous playing time, but I am far from certain.
