Coaching snapshot: Ted Roof
Hey everyone. Let's continue our look at Auburn's new staff of coaches. Today's winner is defensive coordinator Ted Roof Rusted, who is an interesting dude. I really enjoyed talking with him before Gene Chizik Auburn officials instituted the more restrictive interview policies.
TERRENCE EDWIN "TED" ROOF JR.
Age: 45 (born 12/11/63)
College: B.A. from Georgia Tech (management), 1987
Playing career: Spent four seasons as a linebacker at Georgia Tech. My esteemed colleague, Phillip Marshall, says Roof was "one hell of a player."
Coaching career:
•Auburn, defensive coordinator (current)
•Minnesota, defensive coordinator (2008)
•Louisville, linebackers (2008, left after a short stay)
•Duke, head coach (2003-07)
•Duke, defensive coordinator (2002)
•Georgia Tech, defensive coordinator (1999-2001)
•Georgia Tech, linebackers (1998)
•Western Carolina, defensive coordinator (1997)
•UMass, linebackers (1994-96)
•Duke, linebackers (1990-93)
•West Georgia, linebackers (1989)
•Alabama, graduate assistant (1987-88)
Mentor:
Bill Curry
Previous Auburn experience:
None, though he played against Auburn in 1984, 85 and 86. Tech went 1-2 in those games.
Coaching philosophy:
Let's start here -- Ted Roof isn't the most popular guy around. He was tabbed as an up-and-comer during his days as an assistant at Georgia Tech, then completely flopped as Duke's head coach during a forgettable five-season run. Winning at Duke is tough. Those problems presented Roof with the first insurmountable challenge of his career. He couldn't fix the problem and it all fell on his head.
He actually took a job as linebackers coach at Louisville (a substantial drop in pay and profile) before catching on with the nation's worst defense at Minnesota a few weeks later. At this point, I filed Roof away as failed head coach never to be heard from again.
He regained some national relevance at Minnesota, though, by taking an awful defense and making it average in a matter of months. He succeeded by taking tons of risks. He didn't have the athletes to bang with the Ohio States and Penn States, so Roof concocted a series of awkward sets and coverages that gave the Gophers a strategic advantage. Minnesota's resurgence wasn't serendipity; Roof fixed a lot of problems.
Now armed with a comparable supply of talent, Roof will settle in as a base 4-3 guy. He took some risks at Duke and many risks at Minnesota. I believe he will be surprisingly conservative at Auburn. Roof feels like Auburn has enough talent to bang with the big teams in the SEC and he plans to do that. At the heart of Roof's vision is a stable defense. I expect his defenses to operate like Paul Rhoads' ... and not Will Muschamp's.
Personality profile:
Roof is blustery at times, particularly on the field. He doesn't do the crazy yelling we saw from Will Muschamp. Still, Roof is more assertive than Paul Rhoads. He can't deal with lack of effort.
Away from the field, Roof strikes me as a loner. I usually see him working by himself. I can't imagine him being a major recruiting element as some have suggested. He's not hip. He's not going to be hip.
He hasn't told me this, but my sense after talking with him is that he's getting back to basics himself. The Duke debacle affected him deeply. The Minnesota thing was (and always was going to be) a short-term destination. His goal was to catch on at a big school and redevelop the old-school defenses that worked well for him at Tech.
He's savoring his revival. He's hungry.

flip it
much deserved abuse
I hate myself for listening to this Bammer drivel, but it fuels my recently embraced hate.
Mr. S ...
When you can geerate hate without listening to him, you'll know you've arrived.
I am still your loyal Padawan, Jet.
Some day, I'll too be a master of the hate.
Bama hate is all the rage these days. I love to Hate.
Finebaum has his moments. I listen during the season here and there. If he was on in Atlanta, I would listen to him over Buck and Kincaid anyday. I hate Atlanta Sports Radio period. It all sucks here.
All in all, I'd rather listen to "Gap Gold: The Very Best of the Gap Band" on my way home from work.
You Dropped a Bomb On Me
No, Jet. When you're strong enough in your Auburn love that it's not threated by listening to Fbaum then you will have arrived.
Ehyou - Did I actually welcome you to the Habotn when you first posted?
note to self: you don't have to post everything that crosses your mind.
Please don't hurt me Mon.
Mon ...
What's love got to do -- got to do with it?
Jet, I'd like to go all Ike Turner on Bammer haters myself. Thanks for sticking that one in my head.
Jet, I see where you rank Curry sixth. Compare his winning percentage at Alabama with those other coaches. You will get a different conclusion. My guess is he is behind Stallings, but beats out most of the others on that list. Considering he was going up against the best of Dye, he did very well.
In that vane, would that make T-town the equivalent of "Nutbush"?
There are plenty of nuts in the bushes 'round BDS. That's for sure, Norm.
Back to the Roof, if the defense is ranked in the top 10 or something, we should all wear shirts that read:
Auburn's Defense (on the front)
A Bunch of Roofer Adicts!
Winning percentages is a part of it. But the percentage is built up on his 1989 season where he rolled up 10, then lost the most important two.
The ultimate measure to me is if I'm the opposing coach, which one do I want to see standing on the other sideline and feel most comfortable.
The least scary is Shula. Curry's nippin' on his heels.
Roofer Addicts?
Ever seen Back to the Future, JZ?
Dubose didn't scare me at all. Curry did, but more particularly when he was at Georgia Tech.
By the way, you people are terrible. I now have the Gap Band running through my head.
totally off topic, but, does anyone know any "must see", "must do" or "must eat at" places in maui? i'm leaving in a week, be there 8 days.
I have the Gap Band stuck in my head too! Unfortunately it's drowning out the voices telling me to hate bama.

Scott, who isn't Will, but who will be in Maui ...
I've got something you must do ... you can ... I mean, have a nice trip when you're in Maui, and the rest of us are wherever we are.
jetarsky, i will proudly plant the habotn banner at the summit of whatever volcano is there, i will play at least one round of golf, and i will snorkel (not scuba). after that, no idea.
If you get a chance, read this article. You may like Trooper more or you think he is a little hard. He holds nothing back on the WR's and the injuries they have been through.
http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20090527/ARTICLES/905275028/1164/SPORTS?Title=Potential-threats
Sorry, i still haven't figured the link stuff out yet.
Scott in Tucson:
Maui - www.mamasfishouse.com
also google: maui restaurant roy's
and check out the top two hits.
YUM!!!
Scott - after you plant the flag on Haleakala, take a bicycle ride down. It's awesome!
google: bike haleakala
Crap. Hurry home to watch the Champions League Final and ManU played like crap and lost 2-0. Oh well, only Auburn Football to worry about now. Time to get football focused with Soccer finished.
WTC,
I still haven't seen any resolution to Billings' academic issue. He graduated. What issue?
Billings is in or was in the doghouse. Nothing more, nothing less from what I can tell.
WTC is right though. Trooper comes off as a hard dude, but I think that may be a good change compared to what it was like. Clearly, the WRs were coached soft and the players who excelled did so on their own merits.
Did we have a WR's coach the last 10 years? I thought they always set around in circles and sang kumbaya during practice.
I think Knox got blown up after the 2005 season like Sgt. Hulka, and the boys coached themselves after that.
Knox is one coach I will definetly not miss. He makes the list along with Rodney Allison in my book.
here is a little math equation for you.
greg knox + RB coach(MSU) = 0(anthony dixon)
Chip Chip- It is not zero, it is negative.
What has tv come to these days? Wipeout on NBC is just Spike TV in prime time.
greg knox: the black hole of coaching
he makes stars disappear.
It's the summer season, Eduardo ... but I love me some Wipeout ... it's a guilty pleasure.
It is completely stolen from Japan. This looks like an adult Double Dare show to me.
Mark Teixiera looks like a young Mark McGwire.
D miller ...
I was looking for you today on HABOTN ... I had a King hankering.
Sorry Jet, I was hard at work and didn't have a moment to get on...
Tuesday?
Roll Tide.
Nice choice of DC. He's a real winner, just like the HC.
LOL!
Thanks for the laugh.
Hard to tell ... day after a holiday ... probably have to wait.
But Eddie, Rodney Allison is tight with the Bowdens and just completed a wonderful stint in Chattanooga.
i just got wind of mama's fish house in maui--heard it was very good, but you get a glass of tea for $8.00. maybe if the wife really REALLY wants to go....
Jay Gizzle...
Sorry about the Man U match.
scott tucson has email
SIAP....
Apparently the NCAA is looking at Memphis Basketball. I am shocked.
Ruh Roh
One other thing....
Bill Curry couldn't hold Gene Stallings' clipboard when it comes to coaching.
I forget which year it was (87 or 88)....Alabama blocked an Auburn punt early in the game and was inside the ten and didn't run the ball on a single play with Bobby Humphrey at RB. That told me all I needed to know about him.
People say that Stallings won a NC with Curry's players. I always say well Curry couldn't coach them. Additionally, Curry didn't recruit David Palmer. It could also be said that Curry won marginally at Alabama with Ray Perkins' recruiting classes which were very good.
A more interesting topic is how the rivalry would have turned out in the 80's had either Perkins stayed or had Stallings got the job when Bryant retired.
Faker you still say no investigation of the Gads stuff for bamer?
Sticking to my guns.
I thought I saw a shark fin in the Gulf.
No penalties will come out of Gadsden.
I thought you said there was no investigation. Are you saying now there is, but there will be no penalty?
Either or..there's no investigation to my knowledge. The bet I have with sponge is related to there being any penalties related to anything in Gadsden.
Duh .... duh.
Duh ... duh.
Duh . Duh
Duh Duh
DuhDuh
DuhDuh
DuhDuh
sheesh - I'm asking you if you think there will be an investigation. Focus!
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, FSJ.
Well define investigation....
Does that mean that there are some Gadsden based Auburn folks (Hello Coach S.B.) whining about Alabama in Gadsden? You bet.
Does that mean that either the SEC or NCAA looked into them? Have no way of knowing, but I haven't heard anything from anybody I would consider reliable. The coach I am friends with at Gadsden has NOT been interviewed by either the NCAA or SEC. And I think he would have been interviewed since he is a coach that is neck deep in recruiting.
We're gonna need a bigger boat.
This comment has been removed by the author.
You think the definition of investigation is Auburn folks whining? Seriously?
Monica is not a fan of prevarication. NOT a fan.
So...ummm...I guess that means you're saying there is not going to be an investigation. I tried really hard to make it a yes or no question.
sorry - too many years in court
No that is not the cause....but there sure are a bunch of them up here upset that they didn't get Jerrell Harris. They should blame Tuberville for not having a shot at the two this year. He put forth NO effort.
How about this Monica...
No PLOI or LOI related to Gadsden. No penalties related to Gadsden.
Is it an investigation?
Or just an apparition?
Is it Faker's prevarication
on Monica's interrogation?
The HABOTN Nation
Feels pure elation
At tension elevation
Stay tuned, same station
If you wanted to just way there are a bunch of whining Auburn fans in Gads then just say so. Trying to define "investigation" as such is lame.
Who knew it would be so difficult for you to answer a simple question.
Free Hockey coming up on Versus! Blackhawks & Red Wings in OT, again. This is game 5 in the series, 3 of which have now gone to OT.
Well Monica I was trying to break it down for you...
Yes...the rumors that you are reading about while doing your research on the Bunker or what you are hearing on Finebaum comes from Auburn folks.
No PLOI, LOI, or penalties related to Gadsden.
THT...never have liked hockey for some reason.
FSJ - it's got to be the most incredible sport on earth, though I still prefer college football.
I think the thing about hockey is that I don't understand alot of the rules....I get the scoring, just not the rules.
I didn't ask you to break it down for me. I just asked for your opinion. My question was generated by my reading posts right here on the good ole Habotn. Not sure what the bunker or fbaum has to do with anything. This is all stuff you've been talking about right here on Auburn Headquarters. It was just a girl asking a guy a question.
And I answered.
No PLOI, No LOI, No Sanctions related to Gadsden.
But when you say "investigation" that could mean alot of things. That could be as simple as a compliance officer at Alabama calling Joe Billingsley, Coach Crump or Coach Smith at GCHS and saying is there anything to this rumor we heard, or it could be the NCAA showing up with an army of investigators. What I am saying is investigation is a broad subject. So to make it easy..I am saying nothing formal.
lmao
Well, the readers of Horse and Hound will be relieved.
FSJ-Law degree?
yet another short OT. I hate the Red Wings.
This has been fun folks but I'm hitting the sack. Y'all continue the hilarity without me.
He wouldn't last a minute.
It's been fun reading this. Goodnight, Hotties. I'm all over Camp War Eagle Session II tomorrow. Someone text message me if anything interesting goes down.
Peace.
FSJ....I am going to draw an opinion from your obtuse answers that there is some sort of investigation. You haven't said that there is NO investigation and Mon has directly asked several times, therfore I conclude that you know that there is one of some sort. What type of investigation? You may or may not know...but I'm betting that you wouldn't say if you did know. It's understandable that you shouldn't reveal details, but be direct about what you can't say.
I see where we've introduced a proposed rule change to limit SEC teams to 28 signees per season.
Interesting.
288....BOOM!
My last comment is purely factual! BOOK IT!
P.S. I love exclamation points.
!!!!!!
Time to crash.
Defensively I prefer a smart blitzing scheme that doesn't give up big plays and forces the offense to execute consistently to drive down the field. Never give up the big play.
In terms of the secondary, keep things in front of you and any player that makes the mistake of catching the ball, make the wish they didn't.
maybe the reason tubs put forth no effort for dre or kk was he knew from the harris experience gadsden players were signed, sealed and delivered in dodge chargers with a houndstooth bow on top to bama by the REC? tubs from all accounts ran a very clean program and seemed to not get involved with recruits where a bidding war was involved. i was at a AU club meeting in daphne summer of 2007 and tubs was asked about julio. while he refused to mention him by name, he just smiled and said, "let us(coaches) worry about who we are recruiting." it was obvious to me then he knew AU had no shot for whatever reason and had no intention of recruiting julio.
i remember a lot of bammers saying nothing would ever come from the memphis/means case either... when big $$$ is involved the IRS usually wants to find out who didn't give them their piece of the pie as was the case with logan young and lynn lang.
i don't doubt for a minute something is going on with the REC and state media in helping bammer cover up some things done on the recruiting trail. a preliminary letter of investigation for the textbook thing was covered up from summer 2007 until february 2009 after two signing days of top classes had come and gone. i've read it and it has "failure to monitor" mentioned a few times which is not good however you slice it. memphis' letter was in the news within a few months. the alabama sports media is either dumb or lazy or complicit if they could not uncover that one for almost two years. no offense jgt. in-state media should make a freedom of information request like the one in memphis every 4 months or so just to see what is out there. it should just be standard operating procedure if you are doing due diligence as a reporter covering a university beat. not that you are trying to uncover anything as a journalist by making the requests, but something may fall into your lap. is there anything wrong with picking low hanging fruit?
i believe jgt is too good a journalist to let something like that happen at AU on his watch. i think other "journalists" in this state are truly afraid of what could/will happen to them, their careers, and employers at the hands of REC advertisers if they pursue breaking a story painting bammer in a bad light.
diatribe over.
Good morning Hotties.
Gadsden, smadsden. IF they cheated, they will be caught. They are not smart enough to get away with it in today's information society.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Good morning and Happy Thursday, Hotties!
I think the REC has so much money and power that it's more than just journalists who are afraid of what might happen.
Luv- People who get in the way of the REC are known to fall up the stairs and die.
That's a nice thought, Eddie. I wish it were true. I think I wish it were true. Maybe not.
Have faith Monica. Being caught and being punished are two different things. The NCAA has lost it's backbone, so I imagine penalties will always be light.
Mornin folks. It's a day chock full of meetings and con-calls here. I have a meeting/con-call invitation in my Inbox for an event which starts tonight at my 7pm and lasts until Monday at 12pm. I'm all for being a team player, but I'm reasonably confident that there will be significant portions of this event that I will miss.
That is all.
Oh yeah, Bill Curry couldn't hold Mike Price's dollar bills.
morning. i'm back from the beach. it feels like forever. hope all was/is well. WDE!
Scottie- Good to have you back. Hope you enjoyed your stay at the Beach. Only thing you missed is the shocking revelations that Bama is possibly cheating....again.
Welcome back, Scottie!
I'm sending you and email. I hope I send it to the right address.
Eddie, what evidence has there been of Bama cheating? I really think this is a lot of nothing. unless there is an NCAA investigation, the net chatter is only that.
bama cheating? really? wow. i'm shocked!!!!!!! nah. doesn't matter. they won't get penalized anyways.
thanks for the luv monnie/eddie. got your email Mon.
I read all about the UAT cheating on Al Gore's Interwebs so I know it's true.
Glad you're back Scottie. I hate it when folks are having fun and I'm not.
What is AL.com's message forums saying about it? You'll get the truth there and only there.
New "mini" thread up.
chip,
I disagree with your overall premise that Alabama writers gloss over stuff out of SEC fear. That's just not how it is.
This big story at Memphis that broke yesterday ... UM now facing allegations of SAT manipulation from the 2007-08 season.
UM received that letter in January. News of that letter broke yesterday. It's late May. Are Memphis boosters behind that coverup? Those documents are hard to come by. You can't ask for stuff if you don't know it exists.
