Monday chatter

Hey everyone. I am on vacation in a wooded section of Kentucky and, honestly, pretty at peace with being off the grid for a few days.

The season begins pretty soon. Getting ready is important.

So feel free to talk amongst yourselves about:

Which player will make the biggest jump in value this season?

I think we can all agree that we just want Malzahn to make the best choice that he can.

Personally, I would prefer never to play an unproven senior QB. If you are uncertain of a guy, get a younger guy experience.

But that isn't what I see happening here.

Okay, I will contribute to the QB conversation (sort of) and lead into puppet hour. What if Dr. Andrews gave Chris Todd the six-million-dollar-man treatment on his arm? Would most Hotties want him for starting QB then? To me, during last season, it looked like he knew what to do most of the time, he just couldn't physically do it.

If the QB is successful and makes plays and doesn't make mistakes I don't care what the name and number are on the back of the jersey.

Blogger Unknown said...

Scott, that was my impression of Todd. I don't think he would have been a star QB, but he seemed like the better decision maker.

Most importantly, I want us to choose one QB and go with him. After that, if we decide to change starters, the previous starter will be banished to some remote region of Australia only inhabitted by puppets.

Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Of course, I recognize that if we could give him bionic limbs, we might as well go for the legs, too. That would have been nice on some of those option plays last year where it looked like Todd was running in quicksand. Then we could do the bionic eye, programmed to never miss open receivers.

The best thing that could happen would be for Kodi Burns to be vastly improved in the two-a-days and be the starter. It is just after the spring, I don't think that will happen. He has just been too consistently inconsistent.

Blogger Miller said...

For the record, I have no horse in this race. I only want the most effective QB on the field.

I think Caudle has the ability, just has been injured so much, and lost confidence. If Malzahn can instill that confidence and Caudle stays healthy... He can be an effective QB.
Burns shows flashes, but is too inconsistent. He needs major work on footwork and fundamentals. Can Malzahn work some magic? Both are juniors, and you know how important a senior QB is. Our team with be senior heavy in '10. Something to think about.

Todd could be a wild card IF his shoulder has any strength and can hold up. I doubt that will be the case, but I would love to be wrong. If he wins the job this year, keep in mind that means we'd be breaking in a new QB next year (with a senior heavy team).

Rollison needs coaching to polish up some weak fundamentals. He will only play IF he picks up the offense very quickly. I think/hope he redshirts.

Blogger Unknown said...

I think we will see Todd with a decent arm in two-a-days. My concern with him is if the arm would be just as strong half way through the season. If we are likely to see the gradual fall off we did last season, better to go with one of the juniors.

I would love to see Caudle get a chance, but like I say, until recently I considered it a better chance that he would be watching the game from the stands. I would consider Caudle as the starter a bonified miracle that Ernest Angley couldn't pull off.

By the way, last season when the were considering playing Trotter, I knew we had major issues.

Steve...
Could I get your take on the QB issue? Thanks.

4:22 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Nice Ernest Angley reference, Steve. Did you know / can you believe that guy is still alive? I just had to Google him to see whether he was or not. He's capable of miracles. I say we start him.

4:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Ain't got no QB. Hope Todd healthy. Unhealthy Todd bad. Healthy Todd good. Kodi inconsistent. Trotter injuried. Caudle wildcard. Tyrik not likely. Mosely same as Tyrik. Todd likely starter.

4:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hehehe, Angley use to tickle the heck out of me.

4:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, Ernest didn't do the healing, God did. But apparently God was hard of hearing because Ernest had to make his requests real loud.

Blogger michael said...

Most puppeteers' arms are stronger than Todd's.

4:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

michael, how many of them will make it to two-a-days? I am willing to take a chance on one at this point.

The other possibility I see against Louisiana Tech is that we just decide to run the ball down their throats and go with Burns. It could happen, but somehow I don't think so.

Steve, if there's one thing I hope to see this year(besides wins of course), it is to see Auburn put a legitimate BCS offense on the field every week. No more three yard out patterns with the receiver falling out of bounds(if he even catches the ball), no running Tate 10 yards wide to pick up a 2-yard gain, etc. To get the offensive players that Auburn needs to compete in the SEC, an offense with some imagination and big-play potential is a must. The only offensive balance Auburn has shown in recent years is stinking up the field both running and throwing the ball.

An article by Dave Hooker on govolsextra.com includes comments from various folks who were on The Sports Page, the News Sentinel's daily radio show recently. Based on Petrino's comments below, I'm guessing he wouldn't make a very good Hottie.

"I've always...been...wondering how much work everyday in America is lost by people being on the computer -- emailing and texting instead of grinding away."

OK, I've been on a six mile hike to Abrams Falls, and it looks like you kids got nowhere.

So, I hereby nominate Frank McIntosh to the be the starting quarterback.

after you read about Tommy Traylor and AU's Sun Bowl win, don't forget to scroll down and read about bama getting destroyed by Mizzou in the Gator Bowl. Check out Bear's quote and the stats.

Yes, December 28, 1968 was a GREAT day in college football.

I think I just saw a Baltimore Ravens linebacker (maybe former) in a mexican restaurant in Alabaster. Dude was HUGE, with tiny little bird legs. He sat at the table next to us. I have no clue who he was though.

Ending the day the way I started it.

I'm sitting on the deck with the dog with a cool breeze making it that much better.

The songbirds are playing their final set. And the sun wants to hide behind a mountain until morning.

Jet, who are you stalking on this vacation? A recruit? Kiffin?

That I happen to be within 34 miles of Layla Kiffin is merely coincidental.

No stalking ... I promise ... (fingers crossed).

time to take a trip with me in the way-back machine:

i finished converting my last AU game vhs tape to dvd last night. the 1990 peach bowl vs. indiana. stan white was out of his mind in that game. the bootleg for the winning TD at the end was what made CPFD a great one. everyone in the stadium expecting a dive play up the middle and SW runs the QB keeper into the endzone untouched. he may have been 3 & a cloud of dust, but dye knew how to pull the string when it counted too.

Chip ...

At that Peach Bowl, my father, brother and brother-in-law and I sat in a covered suite with open windows, eating nachos and wings. U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin, university president Dr. James Martin and others sat below us in the rain.

I am going to say that under the leadership of Gene Chizik the person who is going show the greatest increase in their value will be DB Walter McFadden. I just believe that Chizik has the ability to develop this position as well as anyone in the country (as shown in his development of top draft talent Carlos Rogers, Michael Huff, and Aaron Ross.) Chizik was very instrumental in the inital recruitment of McFadden in 2005-2005 so he must have seen something that he believed he could develop to be an elite talent. That year Auburn Targeted 4 DB's to replace what was one of the major strengths of the 2004 squad. Powers, Wilhite, Patrick Trahan, and Walt McFadden. I believe that McFadden was the diamond in the rough with this group of targets. I believe that McFadden will become the captain of our defense and will be a very key player in what will need to be Auburn's strength.

did you manage to drop a wing on heflin's head?
maybe spill your beverage over the edge?

my dad managed to get into the chancellor's box at ole miss in 2004 (i think).

and he managed to get into a skybox for the 2005 UGA game in athens.

he gets better seats on the road than we do at JH. without me of course...

go read this espn.com story about the filming of the michael oher movie:

The Blind Side

Tubs has a few nice quotes about his experience.

The best:

"I've got this acting thing down now," Tuberville said. "It was a good time. They weren't asking us to play a bad guy or anything. Of course, I'm sure Nick had a hard time doing that."
