Coaching snapshot: Trooper Taylor

TROOPER TAYLOR
Age: 39 (born 2/20/70)
College: B.A. from Baylor, 1992.
Playing career: He played defensive back for Baylor from 1988-91. He also was a return specialist.

Coaching career:
•Auburn, wideouts (current)
•Oklahoma State, co-offensive coordinator/wideouts (2008)
•Tennessee, various offensive roles (2004-07)
•Tulane, wideouts (1999-2003)
•New Mexico, running backs (1998)
•Baylor, various roles (1992-97)

Mentor:
Grant Teaff ("taff"), long-time Baylor coach who later became The Guy at the American Football Coaches Association. "I don't make very many decisions in this business or anything, even with family, without talking to (Teaff)," Taylor said. ``He's like a second father to me."

Previous Auburn experience:
None.

Coaching philosophy:
He likes to keep it simple. The first time I met him, I asked about his approach to the game. He said his only goal is to have one more point than his opponent at the end of the day.

Duh.

The statement makes more sense now that I have seen him work. Taylor isn't one to get bogged down on techniques and intricacies. He's a big-picture guy. He believes the better team on a given day almost always is the one that works harder on that given day. His goal is to build a group of players who bring life, heart and energy to the field at all times.

He is a hands-on guy during practice. He's simultaneously cheery and terse, rarely holding back on the observations that rattle through his head. It's one big stream of consciousness when Taylor opens his mouth. It's like someone reading a CNN crawl out loud: A short comment and then it's on to the next topic.

Taylor has an unusually low tolerance for loafing. This works in concert with his overall approach to the game. He believes players should be at full speed all the time when practice or play is involved.

Personality profile:
Taylor has the most infectious personality on the Auburn staff. He smiles all the time, laughs loudly and laughs often. Taylor has a million andecdotes. Every topic has some kind of parallel in his world, which helps him gain trust easily.

I've said before that Auburn has the sellers and the truthers when it comes to recruiting. Taylor is the No. 1 seller. He's the guy who's laughing, shaking hands, dropping references, patting people on the back and creating a party atmosphere.

He is the best seller I've seen at Auburn. He can seem trendy to a 17-year-old kid and seem genuine to his 70-year-old grandmother in the same sitting. Taylor is a politician.

He is the heart and soul of the Tigers' recruiting effort. He works closely with Curtis Luper, Jeff Grimes to represent the selling side of Auburn's enterprise.

At the same time, he doesn't strike me as being all that cavalier when the curtain drops. I don't think he's as happy-go-lucky as he seems. He is task-oriented. Taylor works through a list each day because things can get away from him. His conversational style, by definition, can lead him into tangential enterprises. He's a guy who can engage and disengage quickly. It has to be that way.

I haven't yet gotten a strong feel for Taylor's ultimate professional goal. He officially is an assistant head coach. He handles business at Auburn when Gene Chizik is away, which creates the image that Taylor is ready to take that next step. Before that day comes, though, surely he'll need some time as an offensive coordinator.

I'm not sure his big-picture approach would work well as a coordinator. Those guys typically are really into strategy. Maybe Taylor is a magical Xs-and-Os guy who is hiding behind a shrewdly constructed facade. Time will tell.

I've wondered since he was hired at Auburn if Trooper would be given a shot at the OC position when Malzahn moves on. He obviously came to Auburn with the expectation of moving up in the coaching ranks. Is he going to get that chance here, or will he be another Rodney Garner(in the great recruiter, lifelong position coach sense)?

looking forward into the past, was Larry Blakeney and/or Pat Sullivan OC at Auburn before going to Troy/TCU? I'm thinking at least one of them was not, but I don't know. Bottom line, yes it will probably be difficult for Trooper to go from ass't to HC without an OC stop along the way.

I like Jay G's half full analysis of our coaches. Coaches who are not technique oriented don't get "bogged down in the details," while those are technique oriented are "masters of teaching technique." (I am paraphrasing, I am fairly certain you have never actually said that, Jay)

So Jay, my question for you is this: from what you have seen over the years, what makes a better coach? The motivator or the technique oriented coach? I know that different styles reach different players, but do you think a majority of the players react better to a certain style? Has there been a coach around who is really the master of both?

Tuberville was a coordinator for only a short period of time. I want to say it was one season at Miami and one at TAMU before he got the top gig at Ole Miss.

As for technique vs. big-picture, I think each paradigm connects with a certain kind of kid.

I definitely believe Taylor will get a chance for the OC job if Malzahn is good, makes Auburn better during his time at Auburn and gets a better gig.

Since you can sign 100 over 4 years, but never have more than 85, there needs to be attrition of about 3 per class/yr, and that doesn't even include redshirts. Someone with better math skills can figure that one out.

Troop doesn't sound like an OC or a HC. He does sound like a personality though. I just don't think I would want an HC that is as free flowing with his thoughts as this blog seems to indicate. Also, I want a detailed oriented OC.

As for what a HC should be, he should be a manager above all else. He should be the interface to the outside world. He should be the final word in terms of team discipline. He doesn't need to be an X's and O's guy, but he needs to be a motivator.

Dpressed-Thanks for the info. I saw it onthe previuos thread and am just now able to respond. If THT's report is correct, AU has fallen way below the minimum that needds to fallout in order to get the full limit of 85.

You are correct about the class ranking. The results should be withheld until you see you makes it to school.

I think Rivals printed a story that if you count just those that got into the school they committed to, Notre Dame had the #1 class in 2007. UAT falls to #5, I believe.

Off topic

The Pittsburgh Penguins rank No. 3 out of 122 professional sports teams in fan relations and No. 4 in ownership, according to an annual survey conducted by ESPN The Magazine.

They would rank a lot higher in my survey if they would let fans outside of PA/WV/OH get on the season ticket wait list.

Troop seems like he is going to be great at motivating players. Last season it didn't seem that the hearts of our receivers were in the games. Do you remember the interviews with Knox? Neither do I. The receivers were caught in a black hole surrounding Knox.

8:42 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Actually, I am not as concerned with recruit ratings as I am with filling needs. The real measuring stick of a class is probably how many end up playing on Sundays.

Didn't Luper state his goal was to be a HC? I would think he'd expect to be considered for OC when Malzahn leaves.

Malzahn won't be around long. He either succeeds and moves up or doesn't and moves out.

8:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Malzahn will be around until we have a big season offensively. It could be one year or five, but my bet is it won't be longer than 2 years.

9:12 PM
Blogger Jet said...

There was no offensive coordinator during 1986-90 seasons.

Sullivan was the QB coach, Blakeney the WR coach, Neil Callaway and James Daniel the OL coaches, and Bud Casey was the RB coach.

Blakeney was the primary play-caller. Sullivan, Callaway and Blakeney put the gameplans together. Tommy Bowden was given the keys to be OC for the 1990 Peach Bowl after Blakeney left for Troy.

9:29 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Good info, Jet. I thought Sullivan was the QB Coach/OC. I always thought Sullivan was calling the plays, I didn't realize Blakeney was the primary play-caller. On another Sullivan note, didn't LSU go after him while he was at TCU? It would have been nice to see Sullivan given the chance at an SEC school.

9:46 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Depressed ...

Pat agreed in principle to become the LSU coach after Curley Hallman was fired. But it fell apart when LSU wouldn't pay the buyout of his deal from TCU. DiNardo got the job a few days later.

I think two years later, the floor fell out from under him at TCU.

At Auburn, Pat signaled the plays in from the sideline. Blakeney had the play sheet in the box. It was a very much a collaborative effort between Sully, Larry and Callaway.

Larry interviewed and was the runnerup for the Marshall job that went to Jim Donnan in 1989, then got the Troy job the next year.

I'm going to go out on a limb. But I just believe it is true. Tyrik Rollinson will be the starting QB by mid-season. I don't think anybody understands yet how truly great this kid is going to be. We've never had anybody like him.

12:13 AM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

I agree with Phomerly Phred on the he will play this year but not about him begin great, what he accomplished in high school was "great" and we havent seen a qb like that in a while so i guess we should have high expectations, were so used to having our highly ranked players from high school busting or transfering..think about it..

But now there is an entire different staff in place with great position coaches except at HC...ooooops

1:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wow, PMarsh thinks that Burns and Caudle may have competition at QB, and it won't be Tyrik Rollison. Anyone got an idea of who it could be? Did Durst take up throwing the ball in the off-season? I am shocked.

Geno is ok. The area around the sutures from his degloving injury is oozing a lot. There's also an area of skin that is turning black, which could indicate that that area is dying. If the area is small enough, it will grow back together. If it's too large, he'll have to have a skin graft.

Player reviews? How are the WR's looking? Will they be the most drastically improved unit this year? (I would prefer that honor go to the OL).

As I would like for our players to have the utmost confidence going into this season, whether or not it is rational for them to, I would vote against player assessments on HABOTN. Some of them may be Hotties after all.

I found this kind of interesting. It was obviously created before Chizik was hired as HC, though.
