Monday reset

Hey everyone. I am back from vacation and feeling lovely.

It rained in Montgomery last night. For that, I am very thankful. I bet you Gumpians/Lee Countians feel the same way.

So what will we do now that the HABOTN is back for real? I still owe you a Trooper Taylor coaching snapshot to round out the staff. I have lots of Gene/Jona Chizik quotes to share. We need to do some player scouting reports/evaluations.

And we need to run a Pre-Media Days campfire to make sure our messaging system still works after some offseason tweaks.

We'll get things rolling this afternoon ...

UPDATE: I will be an in-studio guest on WMSP's The Roundtable program this afternoon. Of course it streams on the Interwebs.

As nice as our vacation was at the beach, it is great to be home. Back to work tomorrow. There were so many Georgia fans at PCB and a few of the evil Bama fans that were very easy to identify. i thought Cowart was #50. if you have the 'Auburn Experience' book written by P.Marshall they actually have a photo of Cowart instead of Tamburello. dunno how they screwed that up.

10:54 AM
Blogger wtc said...

In order to get close to a full class,at that pace AU would need to sign Houston Nutt type classes.

I really do not understand that mess. If normal attrition happens the '09 class will be very small by 2013.

Does anyone know how many of the 2004 signing class got into school. (Is that the one that you would look to for this years small SR class?)

11:08 AM
Blogger ADP said...

Actually, I don't know what Yan's number was. I could ask him I guess. Jet threw out a blast from the past and I thought I would too.

11:15 AM

Tamburello is on my list at 55. I'm pretty sure Yann Cowart was 53. Of course, they sometimes changed numbers if the one they wanted wasn't available at first.

my bad Phreddie, i thought you meant he was #61. i had actually printed off that pic of Cowart thinking it was Tamburello b/c it was in the book and sent it to Ben to sign. he signed one pic but not the one of Cowart. :)

K. Simmons was #73. i've got a nice pic of him if you want me to email it to ya. how about a retroactive honorable mention? i forgot about him on Marcus McNeill day.

11:37 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

wtc, this continues a recent trend of players signing but either not making it into Auburn, or hanging around for a short period of time. The 08 class, as listed by Scout, has already lost the following players:

J Savage
A Wadley
F Smooth
K Adams
C Thompson
M Jemison
R Gray
J Johnson
D Barnes
R Hunt
D Furr

That is 11 out of 28 players already no longer with the team after roughly a year. Obviously, there are different circumstances for the departures(Injuries, transfers, etc) but the end result is a thin roster at several positions. I won't bore everyone by doing the 07 class, but there were several players lost from that class as well. 2 or 3 years of that happening has resulted in the thin roster AU has today. I've got my fingers crossed for a big recruiting year involving players who actually make it in and stay for 3-5 years.

Alright, my last comment was a bit unfair, Josh isn't "bad" but the argument was getting awfully circular. I also think the 2nd class citizen status Josh and others give Auburn is the wrong way for the coaches to think. This is one of the reasons why we had a coaching change.

Sorry for the delayed follow up but that means the 09 class has had a 33& attrition rate (so far) and the 08 class had a 40% rate (so far). WOW.

If you have hte 07 info please list it. I would like ot know. No wonder AU is painfully thin in many positions.

The trend looks to be @36% of those that committed never got there or didn't stay long. you can't build a winner that way.

"8-4, 9-3, occasional really good" is definition of a non-upper echelon team, that implies that you must be really good every year to be upper echelon. Since 2000, that pretty much only includes USC, UTx, tOSU.

When josh acts like Auburn isn't a top 20 program of all time it makes me seriously question his sports knowledge. Add that to the fact that he livesin this state and still questions this really makes me wonder?

Top 15 in wins and win % all time plus number 11 AP All Time playing the hardest schedulein the conference the last 75 years should answer that question pretty easily. Having a winning record over every team except uat and lsu doesn't hurt either. Oh well, there goes my rant.

Interesting that in 116 years of football, only 11 games vs Big Ten (6-3-2).

I think it's because Big Ten schools won't play us, at least I think Jay Jacobs said something to that effect a year or two ago. Of course, I don't know if that's the reason just recently or throughout football history.

We have had really high attrition the last couple of years. This year though, we are still waiting on Demond Washington and Taikwon Paige to finish a mini session at JC. Both of them will be here. Also, we should hear about Terrance Coleman, Josh Jackson, and Izuae(sp?) Lanier by this week. So far, I think the only sure losses are Reggie Taylor and Lavoyd James.
I think the high number of non-quals we were getting was a huge priority to correct for Chiz and co. Case in point, we pulled a scholly offer for a 4-star linebacker/defensive end (can't remember the name) right before signing day last year because we knew he was going JUCO and I believe Ole Miss signed him. Also the reason we have backed off of Nigel Terrel and the current tide committ Deion Belue for this year. I think there will be a new line taken by this staff on this sort of thing.

I would rather listen to John Bammer Longshore than Josh and I CAN NOT STAND to listen to Longshore. At least John makes all of his points with his crimson-colored glasses as his basis. Josh just argues for argument's sake about everything in his best Peter Brady "Time for Change" voice. Montgomery sports talk really sux.

Blogger Aeronaut said...

My bad about Travis. I forgot about him.

So .. at the moment we are sure about LaVoyd James and Reggie Taylor going JUCO, and most probably Brandon Jacobs going to MLB.

I think it's too early to say anything about 09's attrition.

A couple of questions:
1. According to some previous calculation, Auburn had room for the entire class strength to enrol (two early enrolees, plus 26ish). According to current info, 23 will come in. What happens to the 3 scholarships (plus possibly more)

2. What about the 3 transfers and 2 medical hardships.. who gets those 5 scholarships?

3:26 PM
Blogger Righty said...

Aero
I think they are looking hard at 2-3 Juco guys who could finish school in December and count towards last years total. Also, Robert Cooper got one of those schollies.

3:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Another little thing to think about when discussing attrition is that there is a new NCAA rule that requires a certain graduation rate. If you don't make the rate, you lose scholarships.

3:31 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

85 scholarship limit total, and no more than 25 in any given year. So if you sign 28, you've got to renege, or dump some folks currently on scholly, or know in advance at least 3 aren't going to qualify..

3:43 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

SteveFC makes a valid point. There is a little wiggle room by counting some on a prior year's limit, but I'm not sure the rules about that.

3:44 PM
Blogger wtc said...

If Washington, Paige, Coleman, & Lanier get in then the % obviously changes. Maybe this class can be the 1st step in stopping the previuos trend of high attrition rates.

I've just learned that the Auburn Football Media Guide lists three incorrect game dates in 1901 and 1910. I'm sure it's too late to correct for this year, but now I'm going to be all "Monked" out about it until it is corrected.

Monk final season starts Aug 7, fyi.

The majority of those "extra" schollies will likely go to guys for the 2010 class. We only have, what, 10 seniors on scholly? We have to have some attrition in order to sign a full(er) class this year.

I like old newspaper stories. Here's the one for the Nov 4, 1901 game between UNC and Auburn (played on a Monday in Auburn) as printed in the Atlanta Constitution the following day.

TARHEELS[sic] DEFEAT AUBURN.
North Carolina Beats Alabama Football Team by a Score of 10 to 0.
Auburn, Ala., November 4 --(Special)--North Carolina scored against Auburn here today 10 to 0. During the first half the play was in Carolina's territory most [of] the time. In second half play was in Auburn's territory. Graves of Carolina won the game by the phenomenal play in kicking goal twice from the 25-yard line, making two scores. The game was scientific in every respect.

wtc, sorry so late, here are the 07 losses(again, I went by the Scout commit list):

Brandon Earl
Chris Zinn
Carlton Johnson
Wilfred Journet
Jermaine Johnson
Ryan Williams
Enrique Davis
Tim Lamb
Chris Slaughter
Jonnie Dixon
Bo Harris

That makes 11 out of 30 signees from 07 that are no longer on the roster. Eltoro Freeman and O McCalebb would be 13 if you counted them. Some of these players were assumed to be non-qualifiers, but many of them (J Johnson and E Davis that I remember) were supposedly going to make it into school. Williams, Slaughter, and Bo Harris obviously made it onto campus, but didn't hang around for long.

4:31 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

One more note about recruiting "rankings": I hate the way that a team(not just Auburn) is given credit for signing a player(say Jermaine Johnson) for two straight classes, and he never even dresses out for the team. O McCalebb, E Freeman and N Fairley were also counted in more than one class. The "rankings" would be much more accurate if done in the fall each season, after it becomes clear which players are actually going to make it into school.
