Phillips says he's headed to Auburn

That was quick.

Mississippi OL Aubrey Phillips, who spurned Auburn for Florida State on signing day, has reversed course and expects to play for the Tigers this fall. We know this because our friends at AuburnSports.com, AuburnUndercover.com and ITAT tell us it is so.

Phillips' 2009 availability is in question. Though he has been released from his Letter of Intent with FSU, Phillips will need a waiver from the NCAA to compete this season. I'm not sure that'll matter. It's rare that a freshman can playing a meaningful role along any offensive line -- much less in the Southeastern Conference.

Of note is what Phillips said about his reasons for leaving FSU.

Here's what he told AuburnSports.com:
  • Phillips said he arrived at FSU weighing 340 pounds.

  • He participated in summer workouts and claims to have lost 15 pounds.

  • He said his position coach, former Auburn assistant Rick Trickett, initially was supportive of Phillips' work. At some point, though, Trickett's opinion changed and he became dissatisfied with Phillips' work.

  • ``(Trickett) told me I couldn't sit by the linemen at lunch. He told me I couldn't talk to them or be around them. He told me I wasn't a lineman anymore and the only reason I was part of the team was because of the Letter of Intent."

  • Phillips believes FSU's recent troubles with the NCAA, which resulted in the program drawing probation, will help him earn an eligibility waiver.

``If I had known about that probation earlier, I would have never signed with Florida State," Phillips told AuburnSports.com. "I wish I could go back to Signing Day and sign with Auburn the way it should have been."

Yea, I am not really expecting Todd to be an all american, but more like an average SEC QB. I am hoping Tate becomes the go to guy on offense. I think he can be one of the top 2 or 3 rushers in the SEC and Eric Smith will be solid as a backup. Tate should earn a cool new nickname this season and will likely be a second or third round NFL draft pick. I am gonna have to work on the nick.

PMarsh made some comments about Terry Bowden recently that I agree with. The biggest problem I have with the guy is that he abandoned his team during a season. Real men don't do that, even if they know they are history at the end of the season.

5:30 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I disagree, Steve, but that's OK.

Bowden took a stand in his own way against the b.s. that had consumed the program at that point. I honestly believe that implosion, along with Jetgate, forever changed the way some important things happen at Auburn.

5:33 PM
Blogger BinOBA said...

How bout
Ben "kaopec" Tate administered orally to runny defenses.

5:37 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The biggest problem I have with Terry Bowden is...

The elimination of the running game.

Sabatoging Stephen Davis' last year.

Losing 51-10 to Florida.

Recruiting skill position players who were his height.

Not knowing players names on his own team.

No disclipline or leadership.

The 8-4 1995 & 1996 seasons as we moved our offense into FSU North.

The 3-8 1998 season where we had the worst offense this side of 2008 Auburn.

Cutting ties with players from the past.

The orange shadow on the numbers.

That's just off the top of my head.

That's the biggest problem I had.

5:39 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, what Bowden did, in effect, punished the players. It is the same reason I dislike Coach Fran who convinced players to come to Alabama while they were about to be placed on probation and then jumped ship in a move that was, at best, lateral. Sure he flushed his career doing it, but there are proper ways to handle things. I certainly don't have the first hand knowledge that you do with Bowden, but I think he should have toughed out the remainder of the season.

Steve..yes TB did abandon hs players. He also was dealing with a disinformation campaign from our PTB. This was a pre-jetgate, full-strength dis-information campaign with hardly a worry for being clandestine. Blame the PTB for bringing this on the players also.

Post-jetate/SACS the PTB has less power, but is much more clandestine and still effective. I guess the good news is that everyone is on the same page for now.

I always found it telling that Bowden has not sniffed of a major BCS job since leaving Auburn. The announcers who always talk about how wrong Auburn did him, and what a good record he had never seem to discuss why another major conference school didn't hire him. He practically begged for the West Virginia job a few years back.

6:26 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It says a lot about Bowden that in the first 10 years after leaving here he didn't get a sniff at a major job as a HC or even an assistant.

That being said, had Ed Scissum not fumbled the ball to set up the Jaret Holmes FG in the 1997 Iron Bowl, Bowden would have been fired after that game.

The PTB wanted Bowden out as early as the end of the 1995 season when our D couldn't stop anyone.

6:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There is a difference between wanting a coach gone and what I feel about Bowden. Personally, I liked Doug Barfield. He was a good Auburn man, but wasn't a coach that was going to get us past being a middle of the road SEC team. I still like him, but was glad he was replaced. With Bowden, he left in shame. There is blame to go around and the PTB can be blamed for the wonderful performance of our football team the last couple of years, but I don't feel the anger towards any other past coaches that I feel towards Bowden. As for Shug, we could have lost every game and I would have wanted him back.

7:17 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bowden's troubles w/the PTB started when he wouldn't give schollys to 2 fat boys from Montgomery private schools that certain people felt should have such.

7:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

What did them being fat have to do with that? Were they linemen or something?

7:33 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Like it or not, the ptb knew bowden was over his head. he was driving the program in the ground. his private behavior was a problem. not a big fan of our big boosters, but they are well aware when its time for a coach to go. that goes for dye after we got on probation, bowden, and tubby. you can talk about them undermining the coach, but if the coach quits recruiting, as bowden did, and tubby in the last two years, its a sure sign the program will soon be on the way down as well.

7:58 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

RK...

I agree 100%. Bowden was toast until Bruce Arians called the infamous screen..I've never understood why he called that play. Shaun Alexander was gutting Auburn's defense in that fourth quarter. Give him the ball and at worst punt Auburn deep with less than a minute left...(the previous punt went out of bounds inside the 10). Ironically Arians has two Superbowl rings now from his stint with the Steelers.

7:59 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Steve,

The problem with today's game is that a good coach and good man like Shug would never have lasted as long as he did in today's game. His record against Bryant would have gotten him run pretty quick.

It's a shame really.

8:01 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

hey fsj. you still feeling good about our bet? for the record, i still think bowden was one heck of an on the field coach. he let recruiting go, players were out of control, no relationship w/ hs coaches, etc. he was there one year too many.

8:04 PM

steve. do you remember takeo spikes leaving one year early. he said on an interview that it was obvious to him that the talent level was dropping fast and that was one of the reasons he left. very telling on bowden.

8:10 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Thats the thing I don't understand. People say that Bryant could sign 150 players.....as if nobody else could.

Shug could sign just as many.....Coach Jordan would have still been facing the same issues for top notch talent.

I think the record would have been about the same.

8:11 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

fsj. not taking away from bears coaching. the in state school almost always has the advantage. au needed just a few more difference makers. the scholly limits would have given them just that. bama recruited better, even though au had basically that same opportunity. scholly limits would have evened that up.

Blogger Unknown said...

Shug got hurt by a scandal in the early 70s. He threw two black players off the team because they didn't meet his dress code, which I think was clean shaven and short hair. The media portrayed it as Shug being racist. Ironically, Auburn was the first major college in Bama to have a black player on the roster. Shug just had his rules and any player that didn't follow them was gone.

As for the scholarship limit and various other things, Bryant was very good at using the rules. Tear away jersey's was one example. Another was the number of SEC games. Bryant would have Bama play one more e SEC game than the other SEC teams so that if he lost one game and another team lost one, by the rules, Bama was the SEC champ. I am by no means criticizing Bryant for this. He didn't break the rules. He just took advantage of them.

Just kidding. As far as Trickett stories, i've got tons of them. Am I surprised about him getting on Phillips weight, nope, he did the same thing to Marcus Autry. Making the lineman not sit with him...where have I heard something like this before???? Oh, Nall. I never saw Trickett do anything like that while I was here, but who knows, maybe he gets tougher with age. The one thing about Trickett that you must understand is that he has a lot of players that would take a bullet for him and some that absolutely hate him. He is an old school coach in a place where old school coaching values are just about dead. Today's players love to be caudled and told how great they are. Hell, recruiting services have only magnified their egos. I'm glad that Phillips came to Auburn and I hope that he does well, lets face it, we need him to. I like Trickett, but I do believe he needs different motivational strategies. Anyways, glad to be back online for a few minutes

When I think of #46, I think of Jerald Watson. The RB who had about 5 carries in 2004 then transfered. I thought he was going to be a good RB for us.

8:30 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

They're in contention, why would they trade him? Besides the Phils are winning without him, I doubt you'll see them overpay for Halliday.

Sean,

First off, you're an idiot.

Thirdly, my only problem with Escobar is that he doesn't hustle all the time. He's not Manny Ramirez, but he does take plays and at bats off. So until he gets out of that phase, he'll probably stay in the lower half of the order.

If he becomes a more focused player, maybe, but he's still not your stereotypical cleanup guy either. I don't think they really have a guy who fits in between Chipper and McCann in the line up.

8:33 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

That being said, other than McLouth, I don't think there is a guy in the everyday lineup batting less than .285.

Wow,

I am glad we got PHillips only because we are soooo thing on the OL. But he does seem like a baby.

He looks like that big fat kid on Police Academy(fill in the number) the one who was in the back of the police van, when Tackleberry bust out of the body bag with a chainsaw and Bubba Smith was dressed as a Jamaican, BTW, David Spade was a skate boarder in the that one. Just saying...

It doesn't really matter where Esco bats, he gets RBIs. They really could use a true 4 hitter and definitely a RHB.

That's why I love the lime. That is the only diet drink I can handle. But, Diet Pepsi, c'mon.

It appears that DJ Howard earned a status boost from ITAT/Scout.com yesterday.

At the time of commitment, he was a one-star prospect. At some point during the day Monday, he became a three-star prospect.

I have added that update to Howard's page.

9:42 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

A few things...

DMD and DP are inferior products.

BDS, as of 2008, is a Coke-only venue.

The vending at UA is now under contract with Pepsi.

Auburn is a 100% Coke account. (Woot!)

Diet Coke Lime is better, but Coke Zero is the best Diet Coke we make.

Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

my wife is a social worker and a couple weeks back in a training session they had to watch a video on folks who give their babies/kids Mountain Dew. parents are putting MD in bottles for their babies and all the sugar is rotting out the kids' teeth. she was in tears is was so sad. so by the time these kids are in the 3rd or 4th grade they don't have teeth. it's insane.

10:11 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Giving Mt.Dew to a baby is just pure d IGNORANT.

10:14 AM
Blogger cincytiger said...

I know I'm supposed to be doing yard work...

This is probably old news to everyone, but have you read where kids think they can't get pregnant or get someone pregnant if they drink MD? I guess this is a stupid question, but how can they think a soft drink is birth control?

10:14 AM
Blogger michael said...

I think kids drinking too many soft drinks is a big part of the obesity problem with the kids these days. I know it was for my younger brother in law.

10:15 AM

Do you folks know that Mtn. Dew makes the meth go down easier?

I endorse Benedryl in a Bottle. It shuts the little nippers up.

10:17 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Cincy,

If the kids drink enough of it to be obese, it might indirectly work as birth control.

10:17 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

yeah, these are extremely uneducated people doing this MD stuff. the thing my wife watched focused on people up here in the backwoods of TN and KY. i was thinking it would be in Tuscaloosa, but it was not the case.

10:18 AM

Alright folks, I have to take a field trip over to another office...play nice!

10:18 AM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Jet,
I never gave my kids Benadryl in a bottle (tempted, but never did) but I understand that much more than hyping them up on MD. I always wanted mine to be calm, not jazzed on sugar.

Blogger cincytiger said...

RK,
