State of the HABOTN

Hey everyone. Sorry I didn't update yesterday. News was light and I viewed a new movie at the cinema. It's called "Bruno." You may have heard of it.

Here's our first-ever State of the HABOTN address.
  • I can't believe how faithful you all have been through the offseason. June 2009 visits were up 3,000% over June 2008, which is just nutty.

  • We've had 1.7 million pageviews since Media Days 2008.

  • The biggest traffic days in HABOTN history came on 12/3/08 (Tuberville resignation) and 2/4/09 (Signing Day). Interestingly, those two events drew almost the exactly same number of visitors: 23,098 and 24,193.

  • HABOTN videos dominate. I don't track video views very closely, but those numbers easily set the Advertiser's pace. I like that.

  • We added 10 members to the Ring of Fire. Each of them are adored and loved with a vigor rarely seen since the 1820s.

So what's next?
  • Just today, I received a brand-new copy of Final Cut. That's the most powerful video-editing application created by Apple. It's one used by movie studios and television production companies. HABOTN videos are going to get more plush, but it'll take me a while to learn Final Cut's complexities.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT BLOG VIDEOS?

I started producing videos last summer with the goal being simple: Get footage out there. I just wanted them to work. I've got that down. Are there other features/elements you'd like to see in the videos?

The Advertiser doesn't provide software or (pragmatic) training for video production.

It's a trial-and-error world for me. Your feedback last summer helped me a bunch.

From my standpoint, auto play prevents me from checking HABOTN on my BB. The page is too large for viewing.

Other than that, I love me some HABOTN.

And I hate me some UAT.

10:31 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I need a dedicated mobile site. I know this.

I really need my own site, free of Blogger.com's influence. That project will have to wait a bit longer.

Auto-play is going to stay on the main site, though I have been more careful about limiting that. I switch to links after six hours or so.

I read an article that Grimes thinks he has enough depth on the OL. Barring injury... I thought that was funny since only 5 OL are enough barring any injury.

10:38 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

anybody know when was the last time we made it through a season with the same 5 starters in the OL for every game?

10:41 AM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

I beg to differ, DL.

As opposed to the popular misconception, OL do get rotation, albiet not as much as DL. Top it off with special teams needs.

Usually 9-10 OL participate in a given game.

When I saw "State of the HABOTN" as the title to the blog post, I got all scared that something bad had happened, and you were gonna be like "I am laid off" or "I have been switched off the Auburn beat and am now covering the Home and Garden section." Glad to see it was good news.

Blogger Miller said...

The work is appreciated. There is no better place to go for credible AU news than the HABOTN.
A dedicated site would be sweet.
I wish there was a way to make the comment box float so when you scroll down the page it goes with you. It's a pain to get all the way to the bottom tobread post #180 and then have to scroll all the way back to the top to comment. It's not so bad on the laptop, but on my iPhone scrolling sucks. Are there any scolling shortcuts on the iPhone version of safari like there are in the the blackberry version of opera mini?

Just had two mater sammiches on wheat bread (all we had. This is an abomination, Mrs. Jet) with Duke's mayonnaise and salt and pepper.

Since Mrs. Jet left the house, I also had a spoonful of her homemade mac and cheese that she made for a friend of ours who had recent brain surgery.

Went to the EastChase market this a.m. Bought maters, peas, blueberries, peaches, and stone ground grits.

11:54 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Wow, jet, you're self sufficient. MrsTHT is out most of the day. THTjr cooked himself up some hotdogs with chili, slaw, and (gag)onions.

Me? I scrounged up a bowl of cereal, some Nilla wafers, cantaloupe I found already sliced up in the fridge, and Laughing Cow cheese on Wheat Thins. Yes, I am a sad case.

I'm very much looking forward to our dinner of fresh veggies with corn bread and some chicken entree (the bird is thawing on the counter). In the meantime, I suspect I'm going to have to fix me a bowl of ice cream and chocolate syrup to help me make it through the afternoon.

p.s. Lest any of y'all have doubt, I'm busy hatin' bama all day long!

TarHeel, I have visited Horseshoe Bend several times over the years. There is a nice walking trail with stops describing the battle that took place there, along with a visitors center with some neat attractions. IMO, not worth a trip by itself, but definitely a worthwhile stop when you are in the area.

Love me some nilla wafers straight out of the box or in Banana pudding.

In terms of the videos, I would just prefer no autostart on the front page.
Also, giving people's names in video and adding comments in the video is pretty cool.

In terms of the format of the blog, I think it is limited by blogger.com. There are some obvious things they could change to make it easier, such as showing the posts from most recent to least recent so the scrolling issue goes away unless you want to see older posts.

The other thing would be limiting the number of posts per page. This would help the scolling issue to some degree. Instead of 200, I would say 50 would be a good number.

Jet, the mac n cheese reminds me, it was Beethoven's favorite dish.

Beethoven was the influencing factor behind the character 'Schroeder' in Charles M Schluz's comics, called peanuts. Another character, the more famous 'Snoopy' was used as the safety mascot by NASA, and NASA is about to launch a space shuttle with a Japanese porch. Dorian Porch was a back from Calhoun, GA. There's also a Calhoun County in South Carolina, from where comes OL Eric Mack, that Auburn needs.

Anyone else wants some columbian coffee?

I love the videos as they are. I have one idea that I think would add to the coverage during the season. Is there any way you could get a reporter that covers the opposing team to give a "scouting report" on Auburn? I don't really care to hear coach-speak from the opponent's coach, reporters are usually much more honest in their opinions, IMO. Thanks for all the great work.

1:22 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

depressed- thanks for that info. After 500 miles to AU, what's another 30.

JayGT - I would agree with SFC on disabling the autostart of videos. I go to HABOTN and suddenly your video sound is being broadcast all over the office at work. I don't mind the extra click. Your videos are simply outstanding.

Re: depressed's suggestion, that would be cool. But I don't care to hear any bammer reporters scouting report.

Mac and Cheese, reminds me of "Cheese," the nickname of former AU quarterback Jeff Burger, who was from Cedartown, Georgia, which is not far from my family's home of Centre, Alabama, which is the home of former AU players and brothers DB Michael Johnson and OL Brad Johnson, who chose Auburn over Notre Dame, as did Karlos Dansby, who made one of the most amazing plays in college football I've ever seen, when he flipped the ball back in bounds to Dontarrious Thomas (?) in the Peach Bowl, which amazingly looked similar to a TD scoring play executed by Auburn freshman TE Philip Lutzenkirchen, who will push for playing time from TE Tommy Trott, who is the Gump, where I had mac and cheese with my mater sammiches for lunch with Duke's mayonnaise, the favorite of mine and Ehyou, my partner in crime from HABOTN, the Hottest Auburn Blog on the Net.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

SteveFC- 128 two holes in a row

That was funny!

Scottie B, I havent played golf in years, but when I do, I always break 100. You should play by THT's rules of golf. Well, there's really only one rule. Whatever is necessary to have a score <100 is legal. That could mean 1 mulligan or 7 mulligans, use of foot wedge, etc.

Jay G- All you need is web expression and hosting. Well, a WEB guy would be nice also.

One of the things I have seen with bloggers is them having guest bloggers from other teams. For instance, you might write a blog telling LSU about Auburn and in exchange an LSU blogger would write an article about LSU for you. If you did this, I am sure you would want another reporter rather than the average blogging schmuck.

4:28 PM
Blogger Matt said...

Jay, I love the videos just as they are. They're sharp, informative, witty, simple, and very enjoyable to watch. I'm sure there will be some cool features you find, and I really look forward to them and what they will add to the video blogs. Keep up the great work!

4:29 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Jay, I was talking about an Auburn report from the other teams' point-of-view. We usually see reports on the opponents during game-week, I thought it would be interesting to see how the opposing teams' reporter(of your choosing)sees Auburn. Just a thought.

I'm not trying to argue that this story is legit, just noticed it and thought I would share. I also figured that if it were true that the pay sites would announce it shortly thereafter, but it turns out they didn't. I guess we'll find out soon.

I am watching UFC100. Dan Henderson just knocked out Michael Bisping. By knocked out I really do mean knocked out. He didn't move for several minutes. The ref could have counted to 1000 and he wouldn't have beat the count. Henderson hit him with a looping right and he fell like a ton of bricks and was obviously out as he fell. Henderson added one more shot as he lay prone on the grown for good measure.

CBS 42 reported Saturday night that Lache Seastrunk was wearing USC Trojan socks at a passing camp this weekend. Seriously, it was the lead story on their sports segment and they devoted about 2 minutes to it -- it was also the highlight of all their teases throughout the evening -- "Tune in at 10, we've got exclusive footage of the nations top tailback who may have made his college decision"
This is why I dislike the flavor of extreme recruiting coverage. It's silly.

I would like to start a fund raising campaign to help out one of our long time hotties, namely depressedAUfan. Can we all pull together in a show of that warm loving Auburn family spirit and get depressedAUfan a new nick. I have been doing some research and I believe optimisticAUfan is available. I will settle for notdepressedAUfan.

I don't remember if this has been posted recently or not but I talked to a source close to the Auburn program and was told that Dax Dellenbach had his scholarship pulled and is back home in Florida. In addition, I have the details of Thompson and company's departure from the team if anybody would like me to rehash the story.

1:20 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Go for it, AU1892. It would give us something to talk about, on an otherwise slow day.

I have mixed feelings about pulled scholarships.

1:42 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Mr Bonomolo should teach Auburn the Haka

1:56 PM

Why would Dax have his scholarship pulled? I expected long snapper to be one of the strengths of the team and positions with the most depth. Now, if we have a rash of long snapper injuries, we are in trouble.

Sandwich talk? I love it.

I had me one with fried bologna and tomato after church today. Of course, Dukes mayo, salt & pepper go without saying.

Fresh tomatoes is one of the few redeeming qualities of summer in the south.

2:42 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Don't know if it's happened, but if I were Dax's daddy, I think I would have prepared him for this likelihood after the coaching change.

In the economy of college football, when you won five games last year, and you've got a new coaching staff, a deep snapper on scholly is likely one of the first ones out the door.

2:59 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

maybe he was only snapping it 14 yards ;-)

Jet - MrsTHT loves dip cones.

I just polished off a big bowl of fresh peaches. I'm guessing it was really a peach tree, not an apple tree. How could anyone resist a sweet juicy peach?

3:03 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Ehyou,

Mrs. Jet won't let me have fried bologna, but 2-3 times a year she goes outta town, and well, what Mama don't know ...

3:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do hope there was a better reason than that to take away a kid's education. That wouldn't be keeping with the Auburn spirit at all.

3:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Besides, I think have scholarships available isn't our issue. Being limited to 25 commits is the big deal. Any player we have at this point, we need to keep. There is another issue. It can actually cost us scholarships by not having the players graduate. So, in effect, losing a player cost scholarships too.

3:06 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Steve,

My son starts school five weeks from tomorrow at Auburn. At the end of the spring semester, if his grade point isn't 3.0 or better, he loses his scholarship.

If his grade point average is 2.99 at the end of the spring semester, his Spirit of Auburn scholarship is no more.

Life's tough.

3:10 PM
Blogger AU1292 said...

Apparently Thompson and Co. had been acting up in class so the professor called Chizik and left him a 2 minute voicemail about how disrespectful some of his players were in the class. The phone call prompted Chizik to play the voicemail for all of the players to hear to tell them this kind of stuff better not happen again. This incident coupled with missing a few workouts caused Thompson and Co. to be kicked off the team.

3:15 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Steve, thanks to you and Aeronaut for the support. Hopefully, I will one day come up with a new name, but I am very much a creature of habit. Plus, with my(lack of) computer skills, it will take me a month after I decide on a name to figure out how to change it.

3:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jet, there is a huge difference there. That is based upon what YOUR son did to lose HIS SCHOLARSHIP. That is different than just kicking a kid off the team to make rumor for someone else. That is very bammeresque.

3:56 PM
Blogger AU1292 said...

I see it as one in the same Steve. To keep your academic scholarship you have to have a 3.0 and to do that you must perform well in the classroom. I believe that if you aren't pulling your weight on the football field then you should rightfully have your scholarship pulled. Keep in mind that athletic scholarships aren't 4 year scholarships, they are year to year.

4:10 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Back formthe mountains. Great trip. Photos go on FB later tonight.

Family wanted to stop by Mercier Orchard in Blue Ridge for a fried apple pie.

Jet-If daughter does not keep her grades up, her 'build your own scholly' will be taken away by me.

4:45 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Dax comes from a decently well to do family. I have no idea what's going on behind the scenes though.

I also don't think they pulled the scholarship to make room for anyone. Auburn can't sign another guy for 09 season. They could've waited till the end of season to yank his scholarship to make room for the next recruiting class.

Some more deserving walk-on might get that scholarship. If Clinton Durst can work at subway (figuratively speaking) and play walk-on, I don't see why Dax, son of an NFL player, can't.

5:46 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Athletic schollies are basically 1 year contracts that can be renewed at the end of each year... you know going into things that you are not guaranteed 4 years if certain circumstances arise. I'd be willing to bet that Dax was fully aware of this prior to accepting his scholly.

5:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

DM...I knew that baseball and most schollys other than football were year to year and can even be a % of a year. Any D1 football schollys that I've been around were for 4 years provided that there wasn't a conduct, grades or effort issue. Actual productivity is not a reason scholly removal.

I'm even aware of guaranteed 4 year baseball schollys that weren't subject to withdrawal due to performance.

6:04 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Hoopie, Football scholarships are renewed yearly, and are based on athletic ability. You don't perform on the field, you lose scholarship.

Title:15.3.5.1 - Institutional Obligation.
The renewal of institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability shall be made on or before July 1 prior to the academic year in which it is to be effective. The institution shall promptly notify in writing each student-athlete who received an award the previous academic year and who has eligibility remaining in the sport in which financial aid was awarded the previous academic year (under Bylaw 14.2) whether the grant has been renewed or not renewed for the ensuing academic year. Notification of financial aid renewals and non-renewals must come from the institution's regular financial aid authority and not from the institution's athletics department.

Pink Floyd album released 1983. Only PF album to not feature keyboardist Richard Wright. Album dominated by Roger Waters and also his last as a member of PF. It turned into a Waters anti-Faulklands War concept album. It is middling at best.

There’s nothing nefarious about Dontarrious. Carr 54 where are you?

Selecting today’s co-honorees was a no-brainer. In fact, it's all brainy. Dontarrious Thomas and Gregg Carr were great linebackers for Auburn. Carr was All-American and both were All-SEC. More importantly, both men were Academic All-Americans, the only 2 non-kickers from Auburn to receive that honor in the past 25 years. But most impressively, they are the only 2 Auburn players in the past 45 years to win National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Awards.

All hail brains over brawn! All hail Dontarrious! All hail Gregg!
