State of the HABOTN

Hey everyone. Sorry I didn't update yesterday. News was light and I viewed a new movie at the cinema. It's called "Bruno." You may have heard of it.

Here's our first-ever State of the HABOTN address.
  • I can't believe how faithful you all have been through the offseason. June 2009 visits were up 3,000% over June 2008, which is just nutty.

  • We've had 1.7 million pageviews since Media Days 2008.

  • The biggest traffic days in HABOTN history came on 12/3/08 (Tuberville resignation) and 2/4/09 (Signing Day). Interestingly, those two events drew almost the exactly same number of visitors: 23,098 and 24,193.

  • HABOTN videos dominate. I don't track video views very closely, but those numbers easily set the Advertiser's pace. I like that.

  • We added 10 members to the Ring of Fire. Each of them are adored and loved with a vigor rarely seen since the 1820s.

So what's next?
  • Just today, I received a brand-new copy of Final Cut. That's the most powerful video-editing application created by Apple. It's one used by movie studios and television production companies. HABOTN videos are going to get more plush, but it'll take me a while to learn Final Cut's complexities.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT BLOG VIDEOS?

I started producing videos last summer with the goal being simple: Get footage out there. I just wanted them to work. I've got that down. Are there other features/elements you'd like to see in the videos?

Although Raycom is out of the bidness as a conveyor to the masses of SEC live pigskin masses, it still has utility in preparing us for the upcoming autumn.

Its series "Football Saturdays in the South" will be shown various local boob tube providers.

In da Gump, Fox 20 will bring it to you on Sunday mornings at 11 for six straight Sundays beginning the 19th. Go to www.secsports.com to find the affiliate near you.

I am neither affiliated with Raycom (though their headquarters are two floors above me) nor Fox 20. I do however have an abiding love for Auburn and hate for UAT.

I enjoyed the 1st 7 Mary 3 album, but they didn't do anything close to that afterward.

Sister Hazel I never really got into, but they had a couple of catchy tunes.

Scottie, I knew someone would say something about the Sister Hazel, I guess i Really enjoyed their debut CD "Somewhere More Familiar", but it took them like over 4 years to release their next album. They didn't capitalize on their momentum in my opinion, I guess is what I was trying to say.

Dave Neal wasn't bad. It was Dave Rowe and Dave Baker who were terrible.

By "Dave Neal wasn't bad", I do mean "Dave Neal was below average, but far better than the other two Dave's".

8:40 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Dave Rowe will forever be known as the man who thinks it's a bad idea on third or fourth and inches to run the sneak.

As well as the guy who encouraged Auburn to intentionally take a safety in a game.

In fact, the Unintentional Comedy Scale should be renamed the "Rowe Scale" in his honor.

I called the Dave on the field "Ears." I couldn't stand the color guy. So, I guess Dave Neal was the best out of the three. But, like you said, WarEagleRK, that's not saying much.

Dave Rowe was among the worst color commentators ever and coined the "big man on big man" phrase that he used at least 4 times a game.

Sometimes an intentional safety can cost you a game...vs Miss State in 1999.

9:24 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I'm not saying it can't cost you a game. But there are some tactical advantages in the right situation.

In 1999 I was still cheering for Sir Spurrier and the Gators. I know nothing of which you speak, RK.

9:36 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We had the lead 17-3 most of the game, then State scored a TD to cut it to 17-10 with around 2 mins to go.

We got the ball deep in our own territory and lost yards, finally on 4th and long with around a minute left we took a safety to make it 17-12.

On the free kick, I believe it was Pig Prather who returned the ball 50 yards to set up State's winning TD.

It didn't help that Damon Duval missed 2 chip shot FG's in that game.

The intentional safety came close to beating us in 2000 vs Arkansas... we held on to win 21-19.

That was the 1st game that Fred Talley ate us alive, but we pulled it out, two years later we wouldn't be so lucky.

Scottie,

The hard thing about the 2001 game in Fayetteville was that we outgained them 460 to 220 in total yardage.

They scored 42 points on us with almost no yardage except for a long Matt Jones run.

That game was Carnell Williams breakout game where he claimed the starting job with 177 yards on just 19 carries.

I remember Tim Carter running by himself down the sidelines and fumbling out of nowhere.

Speaking of Arkansas games, it's hard to believe Auburn was ranked #2 in the country when Arkansas came into JH and whipped Auburn in 2006. That seems like a looong time ago.

10:52 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I never saw the 2006 game coming. I knew we were overrated at # 2, but was glad to be ranked there, but not for one second did I think the D would give up the deep pass for their 1st TD, the long run to McFadden or the trick play to Reggie Fish.

However I did know that our offense wasn't very good and that if the D did slip that we would be screwed.

Both of the games we lost in 2006 were to true freshman QB's with Stafford and Mustain.

During the 2006 Ark game I was working a trade show and knew I wouldn't be able to follow the game, so I asked my brother to call me with updates. It wasn't very long before I told him he could quit calling me. A few years before that when we took another of those Arky whuppins, I had the misfortune to have an Arkansas fan working in my department. Fortunately, he worked for me, so he had to listen when I told him to shut up.

Blogger AUfan said...

RK, looking back, it seems the Auburn offense began to lose its way after K Irons was banged up in early 2006. He wasn't the same explosive back he had been in 2005, and the passing game couldn't take up the slack. Amazing that Auburn won 11 games that year.

JD,

I have no complaints about the 06 LSU game. That was the hardest hitting, most physical game I think I have ever attended. I left the game feeling like I had played in the game because of all the contact.

I felt like that game was just two great defenses not giving any ground to the other team.

12:20 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

There is a huge difference in beating an LSU 7-3 and being a Miss State 3-2.

12:21 PM
Blogger Jet said...

RK ...

I consider the 2006 LSU game one of the finest football games I've ever watched. I watched it on TV, and with the replays, I winced two dozen times at the sheer brutality of the level of physicality in the game.

We won that game, but we were never the same.

In 1985, I was at a high school football semifinal game that was of the same style. The offenses weren't completely incompetent, gaining several first downs. But the defense kept saving the day.
The final score waas 2-0.

The 3-2 game was completely different. It was bad football played badly by two bad football teams.

Signees from that class garnering four stars from one or the other? Six. (Again, this season: 13. After 5-7. After the coaching change. Anyone who was critical of the Chizik hire probably still isn't convinced as of right now, I don't disagree with Finebaum's point.

It also was among the most curious hires in SEC history.

First of all, the column was written three months ago. I don't know why it shows up as an active link.

I don't know if the column was written before Tiger Prowl (it may have been), but it's typical Finebaum. It's lazy. It's more about being bombastic than analytical.

By attracting a top flight staff, Chizik has done just about EVERYTHING he could do to this point to address Auburn fans' concerns and should be impressive to national critics.

Ultimately, what happens on the field will tell the tale. But it's a gratuitous shot to say he hasn't quieted critics. That's Finebaum's style.

interesing economic thought for the day:

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out
of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person
must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody
anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When
half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the
other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the
idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what
they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You
cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

ah... good point Jet. I didn't notice the very tiny April date; only the July date for the blog entry. That's extremely lazy journalism. All the more reason for me to hate al.com, and all the more reason for me to hope JGT doesn't go there.

National critics have no idea who Curtis Looper and Trooper Taylor are...they only know Ted Roof as the guy who didn't do so well at Duke.

For people who aren't close to the program, the Chizik hire is always going to be a bad one until he wins on the field.

We watch it from 100 yards away and see the good that can come out of this, most people watch it from 20,000 feet and only see Chizik's resume as a HC.

Plus Finebaum loves pushing buttons, looks like he does it well.

Sorry to probably bring up old news, but , JGT, are you believing something big is brewing for this weekend in regards to Auburn Football Recruiting. I am sure it has been discussed on here but I am stuck out on a small base in the middle of Afghanistan with limited internet access. I am needing my fix for anything Auburn Football and all I am exposed to are the Brits and their version of "Football". Did not have time to read all the older threads.

Hi Dowhat? God bless you and WAR EAGLE!!!

Yes, there are rumors of something big happening this weekend. It is the final weekend summer camp of rising sr high schoolers and an unknown number of recruits are reportedly pilgrimming to the Plains this weekend on their own dimes. Surprisingly little in the news about it thus far.

THT_ I think after the 2ndary violation rumor mill from the3 Big Cat weekend, they are keeping things a little low key. I think at least they are trying to not get it out on the recruiting sites and have a mess to clean up like the last one. (you know the scuddle about the students showing up and the police controlling traffic and the Rivals guy shooting video)

Just my opinion.

Blogger AU1292 said...

From being somewhat involved in SGA I've heard some rumblings about the new capacity of Johhny Green's job. Auburn recently hired a new VP of Student Affairs to couple with Johnny Green as he was getting bogged down being the Dean of Students. The breadth of his responsibilty was getting too large so he may be taking on a role with student affairs or something along those lines.

If ski masks didn’t conceal a person’s identity, then they wouldn’t be used by crooks so much. But if they didn’t cover a person’s entire face, then people would get cold faces while skiing. And since they cover a person’s face, they conceal their identity. Thus, they are often used by crooks who don’t want people to know who they are. Do you see the problem here? So much for easy fixes in this world.
