Player spotlight: Kodi Burns

KODI BURNS
Age: 20 (born 10/24/88)
Class this season: Junior
Hometown: Ft. Smith, Ark.

Playing career:
•2008, sophomore: Played in 10 games. Began the season as a backup. Became a full-time starter after Chris Todd's struggles. Played well at times, played very poorly at times.
•2007, true freshman: Played in 10 games as a rushing complement to struggling senior Brandon Cox. Wasn't allowed to show much.

The basics: Burns was a highly touted signee in 2007, when he became coach Tommy Tuberville's favorite recruiting target. Tuberville saw greatness in Burns and vowed to make the Arkansas schoolboy a major cog of an Auburn revival.

Burns shared time under center with Brandon Cox as a freshman and Chris Todd as a sophomore. Burns finally earned full-time work during the second half of 2008, though the team was in free fall after Tony Franklin's departure.

Burns currently is competing for the starting job along with Neil Caudle and Chris Todd.

The skills: Burns has a strong arm. Nobody disputes this. Burns also has refined running instincts for a quarterback. Though he tends to flee the pocket too quickly at times, Burns is a good ball-carrier and shows little fear when attacking defenses that way.

Burns is fast for a quarterback. He is not fast when compared to wideouts or tailbacks.

Burns' accuracy wanes because of imprecise mechanics. Burns doesn't repeat his throwing motion from one play to the next. During games, it seems like he's in scramble mode too often. He makes rash throwing decisions that contort his body because he wasn't planning to throw two seconds ago.

I've also noticed that he throws with a lot of weight on his front foot in practice, which creates the appearance that he's aiming the ball.

Teammates say Burns is sufficiently intense on the field.

The man behind the mask: Burns is a bright and introspective kid. He's not particularly chatty with strangers. He loves shooting pool near the locker room and will challenge all comers with surplus bravado. Ask him about pool and his eyes will light up.

I don't consider Burns a commanding leader. He isn't an angry person. I'm not saying he's lazy or apathetic. He just isn't the guy who will roll through the locker room and blast a teammate who needs blasting.

Some coaches want that in a quarterback. Some don't.

I've heard some people suggest, based on the way Al Borges used Burns in 2007, that Burns struggles to understand the playbook. I never have heard that from anyone inside the program. Intellect isn't a problem. Learning to make serially accurate throws and feeling comfortable in the pocket are where he needs improvement.

The crystal ball for 2009: Burns again plays second fiddle.

Kodi seems to scramble b/c he doesn't know where folks should be on the field as the play develops. This requires knowing your own playbook and just as importantly, the current opponent's defense.

Some athletes just don't have good downfield vision amidst a lot of moving players. If that's not the case, then it is most likely a film study problem...not enough, not interested, don't know how, etc.

I would love to see redshirt-sophomore beside Kodi's name, rather than junior. It might not have made any difference, but he is a QB who could have really used a redshirt season. That being said, I think this is probably his last real chance to take the starting job at Auburn. Against any logic, I still have hope.

depressed, I think you are right that Kodi should have been redshirted. It might even be a good thing to redshirt him this season.

I by no means think the guy is stupid and I don't believe it is a problem memorizing a playbook. The issue is with making quick decisions and breaking bad habits that he likely developed in high school. Athletic ability can overcome mistakes in high school. In the SEC, it might work sometimes, but you eventually get yourself killed.

I believe of all the current QBs, Burns has the most potential, even compared to Rollison, who I think needs to bulk up a bit. I just think Kodi needs the time to break some bad habits.

Don't worry about the Burns age thing Jay. It isn't like you mispronounced Chi Chi Rodriguez, one of my favorite Les Nesman moments.

That is sad Scottie. I am not an Auburn fan because of winning of losing football games. I am an Auburn fan because of the character I have seen from the Auburn program and fans. I hate it when we sometimes resemble fans of other institutions that don't have their priorities in order. Auburn is a family and should behave that way. If that was your kid playing, you would never boo him. I don't see how any Auburn fan would.

Chi Chi story. He was in the rough with ball sitting on tv cables laying in the grass. While waiting for official to come make a ruling, a fan said, "Just toss it in the fairway, that's what I'd do." Without hesitation, Chi Chi replied, "That's why you're on the other side of the rope." He proceeded to hit the green right by the pin, but no spin from the rough so it went in sand trap behind the green. No problem, he holed it out for a birdie.

i have always had the suspicion that KB scrambled and had problems last year for two reasons.

the OL stunk for reasons we now know.

the WRs were not running good routes and were usually not where they were supposed to be (outside rod smith). that was due to lack of coaching or laziness or some combo of the two.

we could have had peyton manning back there in 2008 and he would stink it up with no blocking a poor route running. i believe most of those issues will be on the mend or even fully repaired in 2009.

7:30 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

has anyone else noticed over the last few years that every time KB or a RB or WR was beginning to break a big play he would run into one of his own players (usually a WR) trying to block someone about 30 yards downfield? i think this situation has cost AU more than a few TDs in the last 4 seasons. it usually allowed that last defender to make a shoe-string tackle or slow up the ball carrier just enough to not make the end zone. and then, three plays later, hello FG try.

Actually, I considered the UT game even more pathetic than the MSU game. There were nearly as many punts in that game as there were first downs. I like to refer to it as the suck bowl.

I agree that Kodi will play second fiddle again this year. He may get a few reps in goalline situations (like Tebow and Chris Leak), but he simply doesn't have the consistent accuracy to be a starter.

Blogger Unknown said...

I do see Kodi as a situational player this season.

To put last season in perspective you have to realize that UT, Arkansas, LSU, and even MSU had sucktastic seasons. They were all bad, even by MSU standards. The fact that we lost two of those games and probably should have lost the other two really brings last season into focus. It was one big craptacular.

On the positive side, if you ignore the WR, QB, and offensive line performances, our offense was pretty good last year.

Here's my take on Kodi.
The way I see it, Kodi has never had the luxury of knowing that he was the man. His first season was a wasted redshirt year where he was mainly asked to run the ball...thus creating bad habits. I heard him say countless times that year that he was a passing QB that could run back in HS. Apparently Borges thought otherwise.
Last year Burns was in constant competition with Todd for the starting job. Both played tight, afraid to make a mistake that would land them on the bench... hence running the ball instead of trying to force a pass downfield that may be intercepted. By the time he got to start, the offense was in disaray and had no true voice in playcalling, game planning, etc. Team morale and confidence was shot. I don't think any of the had any confidence in the plays being called from the sidelines.
I hope this year will be different. A clear starter should be decided before the first game. (That mess with announcing dual starters was crap last year. Embarrasing!)
I look for the new staff to be on the same page, thus bringing the players together once again as well. I also look for Malzahn to dump the play book on the QB's. Whoever learns it, will start. I don't think Burns will be held back this year. If he can gain some confidence and know that the position is his regardless of the outcome, I look for much improvement from him. I say 14 TD's and 10 int's this year from Burns. Confidence is HUGE for your QB. It's contageous.

That being said, how can you not pull for Caudle to get a shot as well. Some guys are gamers and some guys are all American's on the practice field and can't handle the pressure of the game itself. How do we know which he is if he is never given a chance?

War Eagle guys!

The thing about last season was that way too much blame was going to the QB. The QB position had issues, but the offensive offense had much more widespread issues.

Someone mentioned earlier that Burns didn't have confidence in those around him and that is what I believe was the general problem. They may have believed after the first few games, but that belief was lost.

Championship teams have that belief in each other. They believe that even if they are behind, they will find a way to win. That was never more evident than with the 1993 team, even more so than the 2004 team. The 1993 was a very good team and ended up sending a good number of players to the NFL, but the talent level wasn't close to the 2004 team. But the 1993 team somehow always believed in themselves. They were behind at times. They just had faith in each other.

I am hoping that, even though this team might be thin, that these players will develop close relationships and a belief in each other.

Brethren ...

Let me encourage you to turn once again to the Good Book to find the key to the season.

Turn with me to 1st Corinthians 13. Read it. Particularly the final verse.

Successful teams have faith, hope, and love.

Faith in their system, faith in their plan and faith in each other. Hope, not a blind wish, but the reasonable expectation that if you do the things you're supposed to do, things will work out for good. Love for the game. Love for their teammates and coaches (even sometimes when they don't like them all that much) and love for the thrill of competition.

As as the Apostle Paul was inspired to the Corinthians, so I tell you.

Now abide these three ... faith, hope, and love ... but the greatest of these is love.

I'm sorry, but if you have to "know your the man" in order to get it done then you are too weak to get it done. That excuse is just lame and I hope Kodi never uses it.

Just like many other Americans not working for the government, I compete every day without knowing if I'm going to get to be "the man" or not. I'm prepared....regardless. It's what any driven competitor does.

I guess because you have a scholarship to play football.....you also have to have external motivation in the form of affirmation from the coaches in order to have drive and be prepared? Give me a break!

Kodi has always been my favorite to succeed. We'll soon see if my wishes come true. BTW, I'm not holding my breath.

10:28 PM

Hoopie, I agree. Kodi always seemed to have problems when he was substituted in and out. He didn't react well to that. We need a QB with more confidence in himself than that.

10:34 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I believe in momentum, whether it be positive or negative.

As for Kodi, I think neither Borges nor Franklin had much faith in him. And for so many young people today, if the momentum is bad, they don't pick themselves up well.

There's not many Randy Campbells out there anymore left for dead on the depth chart for three years who come out of nowhere to go 20-4 as a starter and win an SEC championship.

As it relates to relationship with his position coach, Kodi hasn't benefited from the confidence from either one. We saw how Jason Campbell did when Borges got his hands on him. We saw how Ben Leard blossomed under Mazzone.

With a level of ability as a given, quarterback play is about film study and effort, but ultimately, confidence is a huge factor. The position coach is the one that instills that confidence.

Whoever ends up playing quarterback, I pray they feel they belief in them coming from the sideline.

Steve..if it is a lack of confidence, then we need to hope that he has finally grown up.

I belive any lack of confidence is because of a lack of knowledge..not intellect. This means knowing our O and the other D. When I break down the game films and watch his head alternate between locked on to only one guy on one play, to spinning all around without even looking down field and only seeing defenders on another....I'm gonna draw the conclusion that he either has a problem seeing the field when there is excessive motion or is totally unprepared.

He seemed to do OK against our 3rd string defense during the spring game. Kudos....he only played against that D the entire spring, he should know it. What happens when he only has one week to get ready.

Don't say coaching was his problem last season...Todd was weak armed, but he was prepared and at least had some inkling where the opposing defenders were. Todd is much slower afoot yet he still hung in there and tried to execute the plays to our substandard-poorly coaches WRs with his head looking downfield and his body in position to throw instead of cutting and running as soon as the play was't as drawn in the playbook. Todd at least went through progressions...Kodi didn't.

Hoopie is right in my opinion. You either have confidence in yourself or you don't.

In sales, i've been turned down more times than a bedsheet, but I still go forward and things aren't too bad. You can't have one bad play or series and then start sending out invitations for your pity party.

Kodi's progression seemed to be wait until the guy is open and then throw it. unfortunately when you wait that long, by the time the ball gets there it is too late. but also how often were our guys open.

Hoopie, we are at the same point we were last year. Todd has the better decision making ability and Burns has the athletic ability. Somewhere we have to have a QB that has both.

Last season they had no choice but replace Todd with Burns. Todd was done. If his arm isn't healed, we don't need to see that again.

Burns, at least for me, has proven he isn't going to get it. Unless Malzahn does a masterful job and Burns puts in the extra hours, I don't see it happening.

As for Caudle, I haven't seen enough of him to know. My guess is that he isn't the answer.

Todd will likely be the man, but if he is only the man for 4 or 5 games, it would be better if he wasn't. We are fortunate this season to have the easier portion of the schedule early. That time should be used getting a QB ready for the meat of the schedule, meaning LSU and after. If Todd won't last that long, I say don't play him at all.

Jay described the fundamentals problems pretty well.

I went back and watched some of KB's HS tapes. He ran the ball a lot. He got a lot of passing yardage throwing deep to WIDE OPEN receivers that were behind everyone else...and he threw with bad fundamentals and the WRs adjusted to the pass.

I will say the TR's tapes show better fundamentals and passes that required much more accuracy to complete.

Blogger Jet said...

Guys ...

I'm put in the position of defending Kodi (which I'm not comfortable doing because I do believe he has some culpability for his shortcomings) because I disagree with what appears to be your premise that places a preponderance of the burden on the 19-23 year old and very little on the coach who is charged to prepare him.

Here's my point, and I'll step away. The relationship between QB and QB coach is HUGEMONGOUS.

Hoopie, you are correct in Todd working through the progressions. He had two things Kodi didn't: a. experience with whatever is defined as the Franklin offense; and more importantly, b., an existing relationship with Franklin.

I'm hoping that Kodi or Chris or Neil (or Tyrik or Clint) can look to the sideline and know that Gus has his back, that Gus believes in him, has imparted to him the things he needs to know and the things he needs to do and has him ready to go.

11:03 PM
Blogger Jet said...

What I've seen of TR's tapes is an amazing ability to throw to tight spaces, albeit against high school competition.

11:05 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm glad that Kodi got a chance last season and putting him in was indeed our logical choice. I hope these issues that I see with him dissolve over the summer.

My guess is that these coaches are going to do like last year's coaches and keep the competition open until someone either steps up or we run out of time and have to pick the best. If no one steps up then prolonging the competition is indeed the best way for the coaches to handle it. Let's hope that doesn't happen...the AU fans will then start to blame the coaches because someone couldn't seperate themselves and we'll start heading down the coach blame road again.

I don't believe Todd's success was due to a relationship with Franklin. I think it was due to a guy named Mike Leach and the experience he got there. Many fans wanted him to be the QB instead of Harrell. That says a lot.

I don't believe in the BS of Franklin having such a love affair with Todd. That is ridiculous. I do believe that he saw that Todd could execute the offense.

I believe both Borges and Franklin recognized Burn's issues, as well as Caudle's. Yes, I do believe they both know QBs. Franklin isn't as big of an idiot as he is made out to be.

The sense I get from the spring is that Malzahn is seeing the same issues with Caudle and Burns.

Like it or not, Todd is most likely the starter. This isn't to say it will make me happy, because if he is the starter and his arm falls apart like last year, we are in for another disasterous season.

11:11 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I would prefer someone step up and take the job than give it to someone by default. it is telling though that none of the guys AU has can separate themselves from the others. It is not like they are all very good and the coaches can't make up their minds.

11:11 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jet.....I hate to think that our guy is so weak that he can't perform b/c he doesn't think the coach has his back. That psyche belongs in art school, not football. Pat Dye sure wouldn't "have your back" if you didn't perform and were clueless.

Back in the day, on several occasions, I elevated my game just because I hated the coach and wanted to show him when I finally got the chance. Bottom line is...go play good and you will stay on the field.

I just don't buy that all those coaches were wrong. At first folks claimed that CTT prefered Cox to Kodi, then said that Kodi was his favorite. Kodi has not been prepared...yet. That is why the OCs haven't wanted him on the field.

If a "coach not having your back" affects your playing fundamentals, then you definitely need to be on the bench. That's akin to a pitcher that can't handle not getting calls from the ump and blows up. That's mental weakness that a coach can't fix.

11:19 PM

Actually, part of how you fix it is by having them ride the pine. When you rarely get a shot, you try to make the most of it.

This is my first time posting today so I have a few things on my mind. Great article JG! I am one that definately wants Kodi to succeed at QB. There is something about highly ranked out of state recruits that make me want to pull for them. Indeed as Jet said, Kodi does have some culpability for his shortcomings but even more so for the coaches. xCTT seemed to be the only one that was solidly in his corner.

That said, I think if Kodi works hard he could actually live up to his hype. However, if Todd's arm is healty I like our chances of shocking the world with him at QB. If the QB is one of the freshmen, my dark, dark horse is Robert Cooper. Yea Yea I know, he barely got a scholly this year thanks to a WR going JUCO, and I know absolutely nothing about his former HS in Mobile but the kid is 6-4 220 and I read that his 40 time is near 4.4 down from 4.52 when he was recruited. On top of that, he worked with a QB coach before enrolling. This kid knows everyone has him pegged as a future WR or S but he is working like he believes he can run the show at QB. I like his work ethic and drive!

Speaking of safetys... I heard that Deron Furr (former 2008 4* QB/S at AU for about a month) will be starting at S for Memphis and was named their defensive MVP this summer. I dont know how many 4* athletes memphis gets in football so maybe the competition was not that great but I sure wish his story had ended differently here at AU. We could use his size, speed, and aggressiveness at safety.

I just checked our roster and OL John Sullen is listed at 6-6 346...I think he grew some. Andre Harris is listed as 6-3 325...i think he shrank. He use to be 6-5 i thought. Also shrinking on the roster were LB Harris Gaston who I thought was 6-4 when we committed and is now 6-1/219 and DT Jamar Travis who was closer to 6-2 when he committed and is now listed as 6-0.

I dont know if our WRs will be much better but we have 12 that are listed as 6ft or taller!!! Woohoo!!

I think if he was "so much better" then he would have played last year, but as many times before I could be terribly wrong. His production may be better just based on how they run the offense. Im not sure if they average six yards a carry without the same o line from last year.

chip chip, the Bama stats last season are a bit misleading. JPW acted more in a Randy Campbell roll and the running game did the work. I read somewhere that Bama ran around 65% of the time last season. That is pretty much unheard of in the modern SEC. Most SEC teams pass about the same number of times they run. Nobody was even close to Bama's 65%.

To me, Kodi sorta personifies all the ups and downs that have been AU football the past two years. So, I'd like to see him do well. But I'm in total agreement Jay, as of A-Day 2009, his mechanics are still awful.

He can chunk the ball downfield with more accuracy than he can toss a swing pass or an out. Neil blows him away on those points. IMHO, Neil will be the starter.

I don't think Todd will be able to catch up with them in this offense because he doesn't run as well as Kodi and Neil. Malzahn has said that he wants the QB to be able to make plays with his legs.

Where is Bill Murray? I feel like this is groundhogs day. Another Auburn QB debate.

-Kodi can run and thank god because without him at times last year we would not have ever gained a first down. However, his passing decisions and accuracy were lacking. Watching last year he did miss many receivers and make bad decisions. As auburn fans we want to believe that it was a bad team and year and situation. But you know there is a part of all of us that asks is he just that bad in the passing game.

Where is Brandon Cox when you need him.

Neil Caudle - Great kid, Auburn man and great practice player. Yes, he looked good in the spring game, but he was playing against the equal of a fraternity league defense, not Bama or LSU. I think he is more of a Brandon Cox type, a game manager than a gun slinger type.

Chris Todd - To some Auburn fans it feels dirty just saying it. I do not blame it all on him, now that is. At the time I did. He should have been pulled much earlier with his shoulder problems. I think Todd has a better grasp on seeing the game and reading defenses. However, he is no game changer either. He can dink and dunk you to death. I just dont know if Auburn fans will ever give him another chance. The slightest problems and I feel fans will recall last year and call for his ouster.

Mosely, Rollison, Cooper - Freshman, Just doesnt happen in the SEC. I dont think any of those guys are Peyton Manning. So no, I see redshirt all over them.

Six QB's on the roster(7 if you count Trotter), and everyone seems to have a different opinion on who the best option is to start. I know this is probably a bad question to ask, but has Auburn recruited the wrong QB's or have the QB's been coached this poorly? Some of both? I don't mean for this to single out any certain coach or player, I'm just curious as to what people think.

You are dead on. As much as we talk about QBs. Football is still a game generally won at the line of scrimmage.

I think we obsessed about QBs and WRs last year so much that we missed the big point our OL play was putrid. All that did was put more pressure on our QBs and WRs, who were clearly not up to shouldering the burden.

Get better line play. Watch the offense improve.

Last year the QBs were throwing ALOT during practice. I seem to remember hearing something like 200reps per? I dont know what the reps will be under Malzahn but I doubt it would be that high. That should help Todd keep his arm strength up. Besides, if the run game can be as effective as it was for A-Day neither QB will have to win many games on their arms alone

11:35 AM

Nice segue jet, not only does the OL need to improve it's blocking this year, the wr's and rb's do to. I hope Mario is in the game more when it's on the line this year like everyone else but i also hope all the Wr's and RB's get the check up from the neck up that the coaches should be giving them. I'd rather have clintion durst blocking for me than any of our rb's if he knew the schemes and blitz pick ups better. Being fast, strong, and jumping high is great but i will take a hook-wormy lil kid who knows who to block over conan the destroyer who flies at the first stunt he sees and doesn't worry about anything else. I got some examples but that horse has gotten his.

Not too long ago we had a less than attractive choice at QB between a senior starter who didn't really inspire and a junior who had shown poor leadership/passing decisions in his limited play.

Or doesn't anyone here remember Ben Leard and Jason Campbell?

Put one man in. Let him lead the team from day 1 of two-a-days and leave him alone for six games. If we're less than 5-1, pull him. If not, stay with him.

My preference is Kodi, but if Neal can do the job, let him lead the team without having to look over his shoulder.

Changing the QB based upon the win/loss record doesn't make sense. It isn't the gauge of how good of a job he has done. To judge QBs, you have to look at their decision making. It is like blaming Brodie Croyle for the 11 Brodie's we got back in 2006. The issue wasn't him.

12:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way Ben Leard was a very good QB his senior year. He was just a victim of the Terry Bowden philosophy of keep playing Craig while he is still breathing philosophy.

12:21 PM
Blogger BinOBA said...

Based decsion making i've seen the past couple years, i am hopin NC can step up and make some plays. Kodi has made several HORRIFIC throws i can remember. I like the quick feet but i want a solid decision maker back there, it might help to have one on the sidelines too, maybe we won't suffer from choking out the second half of every game this season.

If Scott Carr "helped" JJ in the Chizik search, that means he confirmed with the PTB and reported to JJ instead of JJ going straight to the PTB. I guess he also arranged the smoke screen interviews with other coaches.

That being said.....and all things considered, we are looking as good as should be expected.

12:31 PM

I will never forget Craig's senior season and why I kept wondering why Bowden didn't get the backup QB some playing time. It didn't matter what the score was. Even when the game was clearly over, Bowden usually stuck with Craig. This was extremely irritating.

12:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Neil Caudle has the tools....if he can play at SEC game speed instead of practice speed and limit poor passing decisions.

Caudle's arm isn't as strong as Kodi's, but is strong enough to get it done. His challenge will be handling game conditions and being able to see the field after hardly playing since his HS Jr year.

Arm strength isn't something I am very concerned with. Consistency is. Todd's arm got more and more inconsistent as the season went on. Kodi's arm was inconsistent because he was Kodi. Give me a QB that makes good decisions and I will live with lack of arm strength. I read an article where Todd was saying that he would see the open guy but be wondering if his arm could make the throw. If you have a QB that wonders what throws he can make, you are in trouble.

Just for conversation sake, in thinking back on last season, what game were we the most suctacular on offense? I vote for the Arkansas game since they had a defense that was giving up around 30 points per game and we still struggled. The UT game would have to come in second, with the MSU game third. The only reason MSU is third is because they had a very good defense.
