Player spotlight: Kodi Burns
KODI BURNS
Age: 20 (born 10/24/88)
Class this season: Junior
Hometown: Ft. Smith, Ark.
Playing career:
•2008, sophomore: Played in 10 games. Began the season as a backup. Became a full-time starter after Chris Todd's struggles. Played well at times, played very poorly at times.
•2007, true freshman: Played in 10 games as a rushing complement to struggling senior Brandon Cox. Wasn't allowed to show much.
The basics: Burns was a highly touted signee in 2007, when he became coach Tommy Tuberville's favorite recruiting target. Tuberville saw greatness in Burns and vowed to make the Arkansas schoolboy a major cog of an Auburn revival.
Burns shared time under center with Brandon Cox as a freshman and Chris Todd as a sophomore. Burns finally earned full-time work during the second half of 2008, though the team was in free fall after Tony Franklin's departure.
Burns currently is competing for the starting job along with Neil Caudle and Chris Todd.
The skills: Burns has a strong arm. Nobody disputes this. Burns also has refined running instincts for a quarterback. Though he tends to flee the pocket too quickly at times, Burns is a good ball-carrier and shows little fear when attacking defenses that way.
Burns is fast for a quarterback. He is not fast when compared to wideouts or tailbacks.
Burns' accuracy wanes because of imprecise mechanics. Burns doesn't repeat his throwing motion from one play to the next. During games, it seems like he's in scramble mode too often. He makes rash throwing decisions that contort his body because he wasn't planning to throw two seconds ago.
I've also noticed that he throws with a lot of weight on his front foot in practice, which creates the appearance that he's aiming the ball.
Teammates say Burns is sufficiently intense on the field.
The man behind the mask: Burns is a bright and introspective kid. He's not particularly chatty with strangers. He loves shooting pool near the locker room and will challenge all comers with surplus bravado. Ask him about pool and his eyes will light up.
I don't consider Burns a commanding leader. He isn't an angry person. I'm not saying he's lazy or apathetic. He just isn't the guy who will roll through the locker room and blast a teammate who needs blasting.
Some coaches want that in a quarterback. Some don't.
I've heard some people suggest, based on the way Al Borges used Burns in 2007, that Burns struggles to understand the playbook. I never have heard that from anyone inside the program. Intellect isn't a problem. Learning to make serially accurate throws and feeling comfortable in the pocket are where he needs improvement.
The crystal ball for 2009: Burns again plays second fiddle.

Ah, it's NEW PAGE SMELL!
New Page Smell!
THT...
I bet that '71 game in Athens was something else. Wasn't that the one where we were both undefeated?
doggone it! me and my fat fingers.
yep, it was the most electrifying pre-game atmosphere I've ever been in from Friday up until game time was just amazing. Actual game atmosphere, can't top '89 IB (of games I've been to)
So Lebron James gets dunked on and the tape gets confiscated.... can you smell a conspiracy theory?
'83 was also great; UGly was undefeated; AU 9-1; UGly was the 3rd consecutive game we beat a top 10 team. But still nothing like the atmosphere in '71
He's just protecting his image. Dunked on by a high school kid at one of his camps, right?
Michael, Thigh Master = best post of the last month.
Could this be Dear Leader?
Naked Man Keeps Dental Appointment
Jet/THT...so maybe some animal dairy science students can correct Kodi's fundamentals?
I may be late on this, but when the news announced that 36 year old Steve McNair died from 4 gunshots..courtesy of his 20 yr old Girlfriend that then offed herself...Wifey said: what a shame.
THEN THE NEWS announced that McNair left behind a wife and 4 kids.....can't post wifey's comments about that.
MrsTHT called him "skanky"
HAHAHAHA @ Mrs. Hoopie
I've heard it said over and over that Mrs. McNair knew all about 20 year old girlfriend. If she knew and was ok with it there's plenty of skanky to go around in my humble opinion.
ok with it?
that would make her dumb as a stone and obviously not a card carrying member of the Order of the Butcher Knife.
Mobile - Have you seen the Auburn billboard that says "Choose Auburn" or something like that? It's allegedly located in Mobile.
Okay, which is worse, a guy that walks into a dentist office totally nekkid or a guy that considers his kid a distraction?
Is naked guy a hawt naked guy?
Sorry, but there is no such thing as a hawt nekkid guy.
Mon - I'm guessing not; the female receptionist screamed. (and no, it wasn't that kind of scream)
Steve - c'mon...I know you're secure in your masculinity!
Is there some nekkid guy in a dentist office story I missed?
Mon - you be the judge; he's pictured at the top of the page
Mon- see 5:08
Hey peeps. Got caught up working on my MONSTER story about Gene and Jonna Chizik. Sorry about that.
I'll get to Caudle at some point soon.
Since this is the first player profile, I think we should come up with nicknames for each player as the profiles roll out. I would say Kodi "Side" Burns, but people might confuse him with Todd. Someone come up with a good Kodi Burns nickname.
Kodi "my eyes" Burns
Kodi "George" Burns
Kodi "lac" Burns
Kodi "the franklin killer" Burns
I don't think I would actually SCREAM. I would gasp, but not scream.
THT the picture link doesn't work
my eyes, that's funny. That's what AU offense did to me last season.
it worked for me.
To put last year's offensive in proper perspective, you have to realize the entertainment value. Personally, I think we should have took an intentional safety at the end of the MSU game just so we would be the first football team to every lose a football game 4-3.
JayGT - is Jonna pronounced Jonah? or Johna?
By the way, I don't want to name names but there is a senator who should be nicknamed Sen. Orrin "stfu" Hatch. With our economy in the toilet, a US Senator decides that the most beneficial course of action is to talk college football in the off season?
THT, did you finish the Zoology degree? That was my major. Did you have George Folkerts for any of your classes?
John-uh.
JayGT-thanks.
NoVa - sort of, minus 2 courses. And yes, I did have Dr. Folkerts for a class.
on second thought, I'm not sure. His elderly picture looks a whole lot like the professor I had for wildlife biology, or some such course; Dr. Folkerts was a young buck when I was there...can't remember for sure if I had him, though I certainly remember his name.
Kodi "The Hamburglar" Burns.
When he gets the snap, he takes a look around, scoops up the ball and takes off.
Mon, I havnt seen that billboard. Can you tell me where its located so I can get a pic for the HABOTN?
I took Folkert's field trip course that was a 7 week trip through the west studying the different ecosystems and geology. That was a blast.
George was probably in his late 30's when I was there.
The billboard is up in Mobile, it says Fearless and True, it has tiger eyes and a AU helmet then it says Choose Auburn on it to lol..i saw a pic online
NoVa- my favorite professor on Ag Hill, and probably my entire 4 yrs at AU was Professor Wilt for microbiology. Everyone stayed awake in that class.
you had to be awake to dodge the flying chalk and erasers (thrown every which way in excitement over correct answers to the questions he'd pose in class)
sometimes I wonder if the world closed for the day and, due to a rift in the space-time continuum, I wasn't aware.
Even in an alternate reality, I still hate bama.
Whattup Hotties!
hi wartiger,
It's Hottie, singular. Not another soul around right now. How are things in your neck of the woods?
Kodi Burns, BLAH BLAH BLAH. TIME FOR CHANGE!!! Vote....does it really matter, insert name.
Screw being a Hottie, i'm an Ugly!!!!
Obama supporter?
THT- Mass is getting better everyday..I got a job now..I've got some plp to hang with..things are going pretty good..now I just have to get a little more responsible and it'll be the gravy train for me...
Obama??? NO-BAMA for me, I don't vote, I rule in North Korea. I scared you with my Hawaii threats!!!
As I have said, athletically, Burns is our best hope. Decision wise, Todd is our best hope. Caudle is the wildcard. Brent Poole would be cool.
Help me Obi-one-Kodi, your my only hope!
Steve- Are you Steve-O from jackass??? I figure by your Chris Todd statement you myy have hit your head one too many times.
In a shocking development, Clinton Durst has announced that he also knows how to throw the football and will be the starter. Malzahn promptly moved Caudle, Kodi, and Todd to the offensive line and instructed each of them to gain 100 pounds prior to the opening kickoff.
Todd has been our best decision maker. I am not sure how hard that is to understand. Which word are you having trouble with?
words are for nerds. I like bad grammer.
DF- whew! you had me worried with your TIME FOR CHANGE.
wt- congrats! just be careful, those Yanks can be tricky ;-)
SteveFC - OL, that makes sense. I was worried they were all going to be moved to deepsnapper.
and bad spellig
Tar Heel- No worry here, I run a free and democratic country. If you don't vote for me, I kill you.
Tank yu Tar Hul. Sum bady gits me.
Steve- YOu can be the best decision maker in the world, but if you don't pull the trigger you get sacked. Todd's arm may be a little better, but he will be gunshy. I'm looking for Trotter to step up and make some plays with his crutches.
did y'all know there is an Auburn, Massachusetts..I bust out any of my shirts and plp just think I'm talking about the local team..so you are right THT anybody that doesn't know something about my beloved Tigers has got to be shady..thanks for the tip...I'm working in a town called Worcester..pronounced Woosta..crazy huh?
Trotter crutches...LOL
home of the American Antiquarian Society. I would LOVE to spend some time in that place.
I should come visit you, Wartiger.
THT-I assume you are talking about Woosta..did some partying there last weekend..it was a blast..this club with a dance floor between 2 giant buildings and a wall across the front..it was freakin nuts!!
Mon-Beautiful..you can come visit anytime...pat yourself on the back the whole way up here too...
THT- as in no roof on top of the dance floor..hard to explain I guess but it's worth seeing for sure!
ha ha I'm just glad things are looking up for you. ;-)
The quarterback will be Wario.
I hated to see Trotter's injury, but I don't think he was going to be the starter. I actually was hoping he would have been until they narrowed the QB race to two.
The interesting thing in August is going to be how they narrow the potential starters down. They will have to do it quickly.
From my perspective, we have 5 potential starters: Burns, Caudle, Todd, Moseley, and Rollison. My guess is they will eliminate at least two of them the first week of practice, and possibly 3.
I don't see both Moseley and Rollison remaining in the competition long. They may give one a long look, but not both.
The most obvious choice would be to eliminate both freshman, but that might not happen. If not, then it is likely either Todd or Caudle will be eliminated. My guess would be Caudle.
I think they will likely treat Kodi as the fallback guy. If nobody can run the offense effectively, Kodi is your man and we revert to the RFYLK offense.
More than likely Todd will be the starter, Kodi will be a situational player, and Caudle will be the emergency guy if Todd goes down. I expect them to develop Moseley or Rollison as the possible successor to Todd if he goes down later on in the season.
sounds like a plan
Will ain't got nothing on me.
i drove by said billboard today. it is across the street from bob bammerhaur's wings restaurant. now that bammer has to look at is every time he walks out the front door of his establishment.
even though it is owned by a bammer, the $5 lunch specials are good. i saw petrino in there back around the spring eval period. it was creepy being in the same room with him for some reason.
some late night wisdom from c2:
QB?
we don't need no stinkin' QB?
who else would take below as the results for 2009?
AU 2 LATech 0
AU 2 MSU 0
AU 2 WVU 0
AU 2 BSU 0
AU 2 UT 0
AU 2 ARK 0
AU 2 UK 0
AU 2 LSU 0
AU 2 OM 0
AU 2 FU 0
AU 2 UGA 0
AU 2 bammer 0
AU 2 ? 0 SECCG
AU 2 ? 0 BCSCG
i have officially revised my preseason predictions.
you heard it here first kids!
It's 1 a.m. here, which means it's T-minus 58 days til kickoff!
HAPPY T.J. JACKSON DAY!!!
I know I couldn't have been as proud as his pappy when T.J. graduated, but I was sure dang close. He's headed to law school when he finishes up in the NFL. Maybe one day I'll vote for him for President.
i fully expect a retaliatory bammer billboard soon.
my sources say it will read:
CHOOSE THE UNIVERSATAH OF ALABAMMER!
"where that purty cousin is fair game!"

0214 and all's well
Hatin' bama around the clock.
ok Hotties, 2 hrs sleep ought to be a plenty. Time to rise and shine! oh, wait, I forgot, our honoree's favorite hobby is sleeping.
Shhhh...
I claim this blog in the name of 110 degrees of hot sweltering summer.
Aero -you definitely need a chill pill; that's just to stinkin' hot.
Argh !! THT. You probably should be asleep. It's impossible for me to claim the blog in the presence of other hotties.
I unclaim the blog, and recluse into the underground hole.
Good morning, Hotties. I don't know how you survive on such little sleep, TarHeel. I need at least 8 hours.
Good morning, Hotties. THT, I agree with Luv, I worry about you getting so little sleep.
We have a houseful of guests and someone set the security alarm off at 5:15 am, so everyone is awake!
Cincy, what a rude awakening!
Good Morning All!
I will be really excited when Jason Campbell / Reggie Slack day gets here.
I don't know who #0 was, but I'll be excited when their day gets here.
very excited about #58 TOMMY JACKSON DAY! he's a cool dude. i'd vote for that man too.
It's another day closer to football season.
Another day closer to when Tyrik Rollison takes the reigns of the Auburn offense.
works bustin me up pretty good this morning. you Hotties keep the hate alive for me.
WARRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!!!!!
Rollison has already proven he has the skills, he has a highlight reel. Burns will always have....that pass to mario fannin in the peach bowl? :)
btw, 2hrs of good sleep is better than 6 hours of crummy sleep. I must have had the former cause I felt better at 3:30 than I usually do at 5:30. I got to spend a few hours on map stuff before the real job.
Super Wario was so freakin' wide open.
I want a RB to get their swole on this year and look like a beast on the field.
Any chances in hell of that happening?
Buford, for some reason i believe you'll get your wish. my reasoning....
Ben Tate + North/South Running = Happiness. :)
What up Hotties? Gotta strike quick and jump back out again today. I'll be checking in on things here throughout the day and will offer some random stupid input.
Keep Hate Alive.
Ben Tate huh
Call me cautiously watching on that one
Waiting for Ben Tate to be as productive as he is predicted to be is like waiting on the Obama stimulus package to actually do some good.
(Josh Moon - that's for you hoss!)
The stimulus package is suppose to do some good?
who's getting stimulated? you? me? i want some stimulus!!!!!!
Ben Tate, 1000 yards rushing. take it to the bank!
I hope you're right, scottie b!!
You guys hating on Ben Tate is ridiculous, this guy will be most of the offense this year.
while some folks will be dreamin' of quarterbacks, Sean and i will be lounging under umbrellas with cold beverages and visions of #44 running wild all season long.
thus, i declare my campaign for Ben Tate, All-SEC 2009!!!!!!!!!
Tate has had little blocking, no threat of a passing game, and tried to make the best of some of the more pitiful offenses in Auburn history. I hope he goes out with a bang.
Ben Tate is going to be good this year.
BTW, TGIH!!! I just realized I'm off tomorrow.
Lucky! I wish I was off tomorrow.
I see visions of that trap play that worked so well...when that guy gets N/S and through the hole, he looks unstoppable.
He sometimes reminded me of Ronnie Brown. I loved me some Ronnie Brown!!
Ronnie B is Scottie B's fav player EVER!
just go back and watch those counter plays from the A-Day game. i'm tellin' ya. visions of TD's dancin' in my head.
He was favorite offensive player and Will Herring was my favorite defensive player.
To me, Ben Tate is most like James Joseph. A good back. A better than average back when the blocking is there. Get him to a hole, and he's a very good downhill runner.
What he's not: a James Bostic or a Brent Fullwood, who wouldn't go down wherever they were hit.
1,000 yard guy? My guess is no. He was a 170 carries for 670 yards guy last year ... I see fewer carries (just by a little) and a few more yards because I believe we'll be more effective.
He'll be more productive, and we'll love him for it. But I don't see a 1,000 yard guy because I'm banking on Gustav unveiling several weapons that will spread the wealth.
I think of Tate as more of a Fred Beasley type. Ronnie Brown is my idea of the best all around player we have had.
As for the best combination of speed and power, you can't beat Bo Jackson. He was the fastest player on the team as well as being one of the strongest.
In honor of our leader, Bro Jet, I hope to see Tate on the stretch play once this year.
Only once.
Bo and Fred were way before my time here in Alabama, so I've never seen them play.
A healthy Ben Tate gets 1000 yards this year. He didn't have a chance last year with the anorexic line and bad play calling. I think he has more talent than you think Jet. Also, I am Ben Tate.

The last guy at Tulsa had well over 1k rushing. I hope to see Tate replicate his performance.
He never showed it in the pros, but Brent Fullwood was amazing at Auburn after Bo left. He looked like a totally different player in the NFL.
And as much as I loved watching Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Rudi Johnson etc, none of them had the pure speed to compare to Bo. When he hit the open field, there was no doubt what the result was going to be.
We are still running shotgun, right? I will believe Tate gets 1,000 when I see it. Too many backs in the backfield, and I am thinking Tate will still hit the hole a tad slow. Hopefully I am wrong.
I could see Tate getting 1,000 yards in the I as the featured back with a lead blocker. Part of a committee in the shotgun? Hmmmmm.
I'm with you, Thigh Master.
I'll say this, and it's borderline heresy.
If I had first overal pick in the Auburn running back draft, Brother Jet selects Brent Fullwood.
Ronnie was the closest to having Bo speed, but it wasn't that close. Bo was just unreal. Coming out of high school, he said he never really was into lifting weights. He was just naturally gifted.
As for Tate, I think he will easily break the 1000 yard barrier. He is faster than most people think and has good power. I doubt he will lead the SEC in rushing, but I expect him to be close to the top.
Jet, you are officially taking crazy pills.
it's not necessarily a 'shotgun' offense. from what i've seen Malzahn doesn't just have one guy in the backfield. for lack of a better term, there's usually a back 'offset' or where the TE would be and then those guys are put in motion to either block or be a decoy.
Fullwood actually averaged more yards per carry Bo's final year. He would have gotten a lot more attention if Bo hadn't been around.
Since the summer is the time of revived arguments, let me say that sure, Tate runs the fastest 40 yards of our running backs, but it has been fairly obvious the last couple of years that he runs the slowest 5 yards out of a 2 point stance wearing his football gear.
Nah, Thigh Master, it's just a chemical imbalance.
I believe you will see an option attack a lot in the running game. There will be recievers or the h-back in motion a lot. One of the things that will help Tate is all the misdirection Malzahn will use. Guys like Trott, Fannin, and McCalebb will cause defenses to have to worry about more than just one runner.
I don't expect to see the read option nearly as much this season. Also, the bubble screen to nowhere shouldn't be so prominent.
The most important change is that I hear the coaching staff will not be teaching the sieve technique to the o linemen anymore. That is a welcome change.
Tate was actually injured the entire second half of the season last year, which many didn't realize. I read about it after the fact. I think it was a ham string, but I am not certain.
Michael ...
There must be something about Tates that you understand better than the rest of us, because you have Ben pegged.
You understand the essence of Ben Tate, the essence of Jay G. Tate.
Are there any other Tates about which you can enlighten us?
How about Manson Family murder victim/actress Sharon Tate?
wow. sharon tate was purdy.
The biggest thing I think that will change is that the offensive assistants will be looking to learn from Malzahn. I actually think that is why we were about to get Trooper and Luper. Somehow I don't think Knoxsmingerhall were looking to learn from Franklin.
Where was all the bitching when it was the Bush stimulus plan?
Michael - I wish you would add Thigh Master to you screen name!
Bush started the trouble and Obama has continued it. The economy really went south last fall because Wall Street saw the choices for President. McCain wouldn't have been that much different.
Jet, you just lost some serious brownie points. You'd choose a guy who didn't graduate, didn't even attend class his entire sr year over an Auburn graduate who also was the greatest athlete since Jim Thorpe?
Moinca - But if I added Thigh Master, then Captain Boxhead would be jealous. There is nothing worse than a jealous alias.
Jet - The Manson family was framed. Sharon Tate was murdered by puppets.
dang those puppets!
I doubt I'd choose Fullwood over Bo, but when I was at AU, I must admit that I thought he ran harder than Bo.
Ben Tate article:
Linkity
As for an all around player, I will stick with Ronnie Brown. Pass, Catch, Run, Block...he could do it all.
THT ...
I am proud of Bo for graduating. But I'm not naive enough to think that Brent Fullwood is the lone AU athlete who didn't graduate, didn't attend classes his senior year.
It's a subject that Auburn fans don't like to consider, because it messes with our legend, but I recall Fullwood with the flu blowing up Mississippi State on national television in a huge game in 1986. I remember him getting us back in the game against the Infidels in 1986. There were times when Bo wasn't there.
Bo has matured well, at least I think he has. He was a moody person when he was at Auburn.
As for Fullwood, I consider his 1986 season the best ever by an Auburn running back. I think he was a gamer. The motor was ALWAYS on. That's something I appreciate.
I'll be the lone wolf. I don't care.
Yeah, I guess you're right, Michael. Alias Wars would be scary.
Just know you'll always be Thigh Master to me!
It maybe time to turn the spotlight off of Kodi Burns. His confidence level is dropping by the minute, and he didn't have far to go to hit bottom when he started.
Like I say, Fullwood was a great back. I see where Tate is hoping to average 5 yards a carry. I believe Fullwoood averaged around 8 yards a carry one season when playing backup to Bo.
Kodi has talent that will be used. I just don't see him as the starter.
I hear Kodi plays a mean scout QB. Is that his talent!
Whatever happened to the future coddles for Caudle thread?
Coddles for Caudle were so Tubervilleish!
As a tip of the hat to my homies Hoopie and WTC, we need to quit coddling our QBs.
No coddles. Even for Caudle!
But as my man Eduardo says, we can be Freaks for Tyrik!
Auburn would be better to give up the QB position. Imagine an offense without a QB. That is forward thinking that could revolutionize football.
Jet, you're not completely alone on the Fullwood thing. You were 100% accurate regarding his motor always being on. That guy ran like he was on fire/stole something/other running back cliches. I'm not entirely comfortable putting him ahead of Bo, but I am comfortable with the discussion. Fullwood is definitely right up there. He and James Brooks (another non-attender of classes) can certainly be mentioned in the same breath with Bo.
Fullwood better than Bo??? That's Blasp...hell, if you can't spell it, it can't be it. Fullwood must be better than Bo then.
Here's how we settle the QB issue once and for all. Take all the candidates, blindfold them and throw them in a room with Michael, a puppet, and a rusty spoon. Last man standing is the starter.
Somebody tell me why I'm not an offensive coordinator. Genius, pure genius.
j-z- the man walking out suffers from tetanus and cannot play. Not sure that was such a good idea :)!
ScottChocula:
Your reasonable approach is all I can ask for.
At his best, Bo is the better back. The point of my statement is that Bo was occasionally not at his best.
Fullwood was always at his best, which was right behind Bo in the pantheon.
I see no reason that a case of lockjaw should impede QB play.
Caudle's getting coddled.
Enjoy watching Tyrik getting his football Freak on the field this year. Rolling with Rollison '09.
I am not Tyrik Rollison, but I endorse this message.
I'm beginning to think that Eddie is the guy who hijacked Tyrik's facebook page.
Why J-Z, i know not what you mean...Rollison '09, it's what for dinner.
The Fullwood discussion made me want to do this. History of AU in Heisman voting:
1957 Jimmy "Red" Phillips 6th
1960 Ed Dyas 4th
1963 Jimmy Sidle 7th
1964 Tucker Frederickson 6th
1970 Pat Sullivan 6th
1971 Pat Sullivan 1st
1985 Bo Jackson 1st
1986 Brent Fullwood 6th
2000 Rudi Johnson 10th
I think some of our other backs would have been in there, had they not been splitting playing time. (or in the case of James Brooks/Joe Cribbs/James Bostic, had AU been on TV).
Btw, it's disgusting how many times Bammers have been in the top 10, but at least they've never won one!
With regards to the QBs; Caudle, Moseley, and Tyrik all need to beef up a bit. I believe they are all under 200 pounds. I would expect a QB with decent height (6'2"-6'4") to be around 210.
Scott, that list doesn't seem to be complete. Wasn't Aundrey Bruce in the top 10?
If Ben Tate is most of the offense this year, this offense is effed up.
