Stuff I missed on Thursday

Hey everyone. So in my efforts to gain clarity on the Chaz Ramsey situation, I failed to discuss a few lighter (but still notable) Auburn developments.

Things like that happen sometimes.
  • Auburn has scheduled its Fan Day extravaganza for Aug. 16. It will not be in Beard-Eaves as usual. It's going to be in Jordan-Hare this time and will run from 2-4 p.m. I didn't see much in terms of program changes, though allegedly there will be "game worn" jerseys for sale.

  • California DE Joel Bonomolo committed to Les Tigres late Wednesday night, our friends at the various Auburn-themed websites report. He attends a suburban Los Angeles junior college right now, but expects to be enrolled at Auburn in January. Bonomolo stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 245 pounds. He chose Les Tigres over a bunch of West Coast schools like Arizona and Arizona State.

  • Auburn is about to begin what is expected to be a significant recruiting weekend. This will be the last significant recruiting weekend until at least September. Among the most high-profile visitors will be Arkansas TB Michael Dyer, Arkansas TE Dakota Mosley, Georgia DT Jeffrey Whitaker and Greenville HS DT Kenneth Carter.

I'd sure like to see Watson win.

Also across the pond, George Hincapie of the US, and former teammate of Lance for every one of Lance's Tour de France wins, came within 5 seconds of taking the overall lead today. He was really upset that Lance's team played a big part in George not getting the yellow jersey.

Tomorrow's stage in Switzerland will pass right between Gruyere and Broc, great cheese & chocolate towns, respectively.

GoVols.com is reporting that OT Aubrey Philips has left the team at FSU. If I am remembering correctly, he was interested in Auburn, and FSU swept in and convinced him otherwise. Would Auburn have a shot at getting him now, or would he be interested in Auburn? He would really help in a position of desperate need for Auburn.

6:04 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Depressed...I agree that need for OL is desperate. Nationwide...many more OL have comitted earlier than in previous years. All but one of our intial top targets have committed. At this point we have to hope that the coaches have identified and are targeting the OL recruits that will have a breakout senior year.

We've danced around our poor WR issues for years, but you really can't develop offensive schemes to hide the lack of OL talent.

It's not too late, but it is disppointing that our most critical need is not generating interest. As best as I can tell, only one OL that we would consider offering is even visiting AU this weekend.

7:11 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

There is a pic of Corey Lemonier on AL.com wearing an AU hat at todays camp. Before the Petey Smith debacle, I would have seen that as a promising sign.

I am so sick of thinking about OL that I have decided to stop. These coachs get paid to worry about this so Im gonna let em. They know the need better than me so from here on out I am going to assume they are on top of this and have several unknown recruits identified.

7:31 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Hoopie, I'm with you.

OL puts the O in offense.

We need OL badly ... but I'm suspicious of players who leave programs.

Maybe I'm being overly judgmental, but it seems many of the players who leave major programs are either immature or a problem.

7:36 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Looks like Demetruce McNeal has committed. At least that is the extremely early talk at the moment.

7:36 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

It also seems that Rivals is reporting that Ladarius Owens has eliminated bama from his list. His new top 3 are The Good Guys, UGA, and UF.

7:39 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That is good news about Owens. I couldn't see him signing with the evil empire, but it would have been a major hit if he did.

I think we won't be as concerned with WR as the season progresses. We have talent there. Hopefully it will show this season.

The offensive line will continue to be a concern, but the biggest concern there will not be this year or next. The 2011 season depends upon us getting some quality linemen to come in when most of our OL will graduate.

Keep in mind that linemen can come from the defensive side of the ball, so I view any lineman signing as a very good thing.

So far we are seeing a recruiting class that is much the same as what we saw last season, other than there being fewer commitments. Yes, these coaches have made more noise, but at what point is it time to piss or get off the crapper?

9:07 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Jet...
I feel you on that. I haven't heard anyone talk about golf not being a sport in years, at least pre-Tiger.

Steve...
This class could still finish high with the talent still out there that's favoring us. I dont know if AU will ever consistently land 4-5* recruits without consistenly winning BIG (ie 10+ games per seasonn). I think that all this attention from the top RBs in the country might make the fan base more antsy if we dont produce quickly. Without the connects with Malzahn and Luper, i dont know how high we'd be for Seastrunk and Dyer. Next year those connections might not be there with the best talent in the country. Then these recruiting classes start looking like the old classes. I really have no problem with that as long as they develop into the players that many of the old classes had.

9:31 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

I'll never forget watching Nicklaus on TV at the Masters in 1986.

I hope Tom Watson can pull it off today as well.

It would be GREAT for golf, IMO.

Anybody that thinks golf is not a sport should ask Michael Jordan.

Prior to the last two recruiting classes, we had some of the best classes in the country. I look for the same.

There is a danger with going after a lot of high profile recruits. You can end up losing the recruits you could have gotten. Corey Grant is an example of one I am concerned about.

right now, looks like the Tour is Contador's to lose. Lance couldn't match the climbing ability of his teammate today. There's still some serious Alps later this week, and a time trial. Next Saturday should be intesting with a mtn top finish at the end of a monster climb.

Time to turn to golf

10:54 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

yep, Corey Grant is definitely one we'd like to have. He supposedly has an offer; all he has to do is say yes. I don't think we'll lose him so much as he may choose to go elsewhere if we sign better* RBs

Big Cat..that's an interesting question. At 340, he probably couldn't contribute this year even if the NCAA allowed such. Even if he sits out a year to get in condition, we don't have anything to lose. If he doesn't "shape up"... he gets booted. If he lives up to his HS star rating, he could be a good offensive lineman in a year or 2.

Giving him a year to acclimate to college life and condition may be best for him. It helped Ronnie Brown tremendously.

Both discipline issues, but one not as bad as the other for a team.

I agree with RK, it doesnt appear to be a Randy Moss type situation. Just think how bad Moss had to be to get kicked out of Free Shoes University!! I digress...

It could have been more of a Deron Furr type situation. I dont know if that's good our bad but I dont believe Furr was/is a bad kid. Again I digress...

I am beginning to trust this staff so I feel they will make the best decision for Auburn either way.

4:48 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Auburn also has a prior relationship with Phillips, they were recruiting him very hard last year, so I think they have some kind of idea of the type of person he is. To me, that makes the situation a little different as opposed to being a player who left a school and they knew nothing about him.

Or maybe I am just desperate for OT's. Ziemba and McCain are the only true Tackles on the team. Everyone else is really better suited to being an interior lineman. I hope this situation can be worked out.

From what I've heard from Columbus, Furr is a good kid. AU had way too many qbs and he didn't want to wait to be another "athletic qb project". He is listed as a db at Memphis. Wish he was a safety at AU. That kid could play most anywhere onthe field.
