Wednesday chatter
Hey everyone. Sorry for the minor delay here. One could say Wifey and I had a little too much fun last night and I forgot to pre-load the 8 a.m. thread.
Just to recap: The Diamondback at Kings Island is terrifying. I'm not one to be terrified by coasters. I'm an enthusiast. The first three hills really messed me up.
Here's what it looks like: The Diamondback
Note that there are no cars. You sit in a seat with armrests. There is nothing else to the car. Your feet dangle. That added to the drama. The second half of the above video illustrates it.
We also rode The Vortex, but didn't have a chance to hit another favorite, Invertigo. We ran out of time.
TODAY'S AUBURN QUESTION: Will Auburn's offense average more than 30 points per game this season? The Tigers averaged 17.3 in 2007.

WOW!
Jay, that average points per game last year is pathetic.
Sam Dejarnette was the prime example of a player Pat Dye chased off the team when he got to Auburn. He was a pretty good runningback, but Dye was in the midst of getting the players attention.
I go pee and come back and VOILA! a new thread
i hate roller coasters b/c i get motion sick. thus, i shun them. props to everyone who rides them. my wife is addicted.
30 points per game? on average, i would say we can. if we can put up 70 or so on Ball State it'll help even things out. :)
If we average 28 in the league, we'll be battery acid.
So, realistically speaking, no, we won't average 30 ... or 28 in the league.
Why oh why do I continue to read comments on the al.com site, when I KNOW all I should do is read the article?
AS for if we can average over 30 points a game this season, I doubt it. Having a QB is one of the qualities of a high scoring offense. If we average over 30 points a game, we would likely win the west.
I'll say 27 points per game overall...however around 21 or so in SEC games.
Average PPG is a tricky statistic, the money games can really skew the numbers. I'll say no, due mainly to the uneven QB play. But with Gus on board, I could actually see it happening.
17.3 in 07, no idea what it was last year, but I have a feeling it was less. I hope we can get into the 20's. But then again, I'm cautiously optimistic.
i guess all the coffee and AU history talk has me too optimistic.
i actually watched a little of the A-Day game again last nite. there was this great play where Super Mario lined up to the left of Caudle, came in motion to the right and caught a 5 yard pass for a TD. i blame that play for my optimism. dunno why.
Of course if we average 17 points per game, someone will need to explain to me why it isn't okay to play russian roulet with a bolt action rifle.
I thought we'd average 35 ppg last year. I'll be happy if we at least find the end zone every game this year.
Last year I thought we had a good chance of winning the west if we had an average offense. All I was really looking for was average. Heck, we would have had a shot with a bad offense. Unfortunately, we didn't leave the pathetic range.
30 is a bit unrealistic this year, don't you think?
I say we average 26.4 for the season and around 20 for conference games.
The inconsistencies in the first couple of games will make it tough to reach the 30 plateau.
SteveFC -bolt action rifle..that was hilarious.
17.3 is pathetic. That's the correct word.
We need to hold a campfire soon ... to get back on track for the season.
We'll do this next week.
Does anyone want to read this report for me and provide a Cliff's Notes version?
D.Miller -- it's Gus Malzahn, who's supposed to be the best OC around.
I hereby predict 22 ppg and a 6-6 record. Injuries with lack of depth and lack of SEC caliber play from QB will have deleterious effects.
Finally, a Micheal Jackson story that makes a bit of sense.
I have realistic goals for our offense this season. My goal is to never hear Gus Malzahn say we need to simplify the offense.
"My goal is to never hear Gus Malzahn say we need to simplify the offense."
Excellent Steve
Yeah, I am optimistically cautious in my cautious optimism that Malzahn can work magic with the offense. But, it is still a whole new staff, new offense, new QB... Dooley's LaTech team is decent, MSU is still (low tier) SEC, WVU will be tough, and Ball St wasn't a pushover last year.
I think to even have a remote chance of averaging 30 for the season we will need to average 45 for the first 4 games.
auburnsports.com reports that T'Sharvan Bell has been moved to Safety since C.Thompson has been dismissed from the team.
I do predict we will score more points against MSU this year than we did last.
Under Tub we would turn the offense off against the cupcakes when we got near 21-0 for the most part.
How will Chizik handle these games, will he continue to go for the throat or will he go basic once the game is under control.
not sure if that's been discussed yet or not.
I never believe in turning the offense off. You just take the starters out of the game. If you continue to score, so be it.
Does Chizik let the 2nd string go all out, or does he just run the ball 3 times into the line and punt like Tub? Will he let reserves get valuable in game experience?
His 5 career wins as a HC won't tell us anything.
What did our DEF average giving up last year? I would like to see that number significantly reduced.
I would like to set minimum team goals to increase offensive production by 60% and increase defensive effectiveness (decrease opposing teams offensive production) by 30%.
If we can reach these goals it will be a good season. If we can surpass these goals by any significant margin it will be a great season.
I really hope Chiz just lets Malzahn make the offensive decisions.

One of my favorite Spurrier quotes when asked about running up the score- "It's not my job to keep my team from scoring, that's the other teams' responsibility."
I loved our defense last season. It was a crime to see what happened to them as the season progressed. That was a championship level defense, but coupled with an offense as productive as a toothbrush salesman at an Alabama home game, it got pretty ugly.
The bad thing about the 17 points per game, I bet the D/special teams scored 2-3 of those points per game.
D.Miller,
I think our D gave up 15 or so per game, most of that was in the 2nd half of the year and the Bama game really skewed that.
However the zero we gave up in the post season helped.
I agree, Steve. The D couldn't keep up that level of play for the whole season due to the exorbitant amount of time they spent on the field, and nagging injuries as a result.
If the offense is better this year, the defense should be better.
I like the move of Bell to safety. He can be a good cover option at the safety position.
"I thought (Bell) would be the perfect candidate back there," AU safeties coach Tommy Thigpen said. "He's a physical kid. What I saw in the spring is he didn't shy away from contact. He would come up and lay a lick on you.
Better than 17 PPG for sure - but not near 30 PPG average. I'm leaning toward the 25 range.
LT
all I want is one more point than the other guy. I could care less how, O,D,INT, FG saftey..
I pretty simple that way..
PS THT - put a PC in teh throne room.. the only way to go.... pun'ny huh..
DL - I don't own the office, so I can't get that done. But at home, I will say the Macbook has pretty much been in every room in the house.
DL - I'm with you on the points. I'd much rather AU lead the nation in scoring defense than in scoring offense.
When was the last time AU averaged less offensive scoring than last season?
THT ...
To answer question from previous thread, yes, Ed Graham did tag-team with Fullwood on that kickoff return against FSU.
I believe he was from Bayou La Batre, along with another hard-nosed Auburn back, Brandon Johnson.
The stat that people (especially ESPN announcers) seem to love is total offense and total defense, and I hate both of them.
I don't really care about how many yards per game we get or give up, it's the points for and points against that matter.
My best example of my last argument...
2001 vs Arkansas we lose 42-17.
We only gave up 210 yards and gained 440.
to answer my own question, my first guess would be 1998. That offense was offensive.
In 98 we averaged 15.1 per game.
Gave up 21 points per game.
Sean's Offense/Defense philosphy: Score more points than the other team by whatever means possible. The End.
1973 offense was abysmal, and we didn't exactly have an offensive juggernaut in Pat Dye's first year, 1981. Otherwise, I think we've been at least adequate, and sometimes exceptional in ppg.
I've seen the Titans roll up all kinds of stats against Baltimore in two playoff games where we were seeded No. 1. We owned the games on the stat sheet. Exception being points. We lost both games.
THT's philosophy: Get a safety and don't allow the other team to cross midfield.
As a former NFL coach once said when asked "What do you think about your offense's execution?"
"I'm all for it."
Bell was signed as a safety and it was assumed any other position would be a moonlighting situation.
Not Moonlighting in a Bruce Willis way, either.
A 13 point improvement is probably too much to ask of the offense. I would think 22-24 is feasible.
When's the last time an SEC school not named Florida did that? When's the last time Auburn did that?
As in averaging 22-24 points per game.
A 5-7 point improvement.
Moonlighting......i haven't thought of that show in ages. Bruce Willis is a bad man i don't care what you say.
I just looked it up, we gave up 18 points per game last year.
When was the last time we had given up that much in a season?
Even Gibbs one year we only gave up 15.5.
Thank you WarEagleRK!
I was not and am not a Paul Rhodes fan.
He may be a nice man.
However, his defensive style left a great deal to be desired in my book.
I was thinking it would be 98, but never mind, we gave up 23 points per game in 2001.
Rhodes was solid, but very very bland.
99-01 we gave up over 20 points per game each year...however that is due to commedian Jon Lovitz being our D-Coordinator.
Who was that DC? I don't recall that one.
John Lovett
Man, trying to name all of the coordinators under Tuberville could be its own Trivia Pursuit category.
Rollison 09, get on board.
Ok, Eddie. Convince me.
Mazzone
Lovett
Petrino
Chizik
Nallsminger
Borges
Gibbs
Muschamp
Franklin
Rhoads
I watched the Diamondback Youtube on full screen and it gave me the willies!
Macho- I watched film. I like his groove and his facebook attitude. Of course, I didn't get to talk to him personally, so that could completely change if given the opportunity.
hahahaha @ "get on board"
I just luv the hell outta you, Eddie
Is he a better option? It doesn't take much to improve on last year.
Talking to players? Not sure that means anything. I'm more interested in a QB that can throw a dart more than 5 yards down the field and who can do more than one ready and run.
Jay,
I watched the youtube and just got sick myself....ooops!!!
My question earlier got lost in the mist.
What was the last SEC team not named Florida to average more than 30 points a game for a season?
Google it, Macho.
GA
Mobile do you remember when you had to go to a theater to get that faux coaster feeling?
Macho- Being able to feel a player out is important, especialy to our dear leader.:)
Your first point pretty much is where i'm at as to why i'm pro rollison without seeing him take his first practice snap.
So who was the freshman that has now moved to Safety because of injuries and a suspension?
yes like the Universal Studios "Back to the Future" ride.
MG..without looking..my guess is UGA.
24 points avg/game coupled with a good T-O-P....I'll take it.
Rhodes D would have really been steller if coupled with a credible offense. Last season we would have been better with the Muschamp gambling system. At least some of the time, we could get the D off the field.
I want a D that stops the other team. I prefer one that is so fundamentally sound they don't have to resort to gimmicks and gambles.
T'Sharvan Bell was moved to Safety Mobilz. JGT pointed out he was originally brought in as a Safety.
Thanks scottie....i kinda figured it was.
Mobilz..that is T'Sharvin Bell. He was recruited as a safety, was injured in fall camp and redshirted last season. I didn't notice him in the spring, but I gather he was working as a cb.
"What was the last SEC team not named Florida to average more than 30 points a game for a season?"
We did it in 04 & 05.
Almost half the league (5 teams) did it last year.
30 pts a game? I hopes so. I also hopes to one day own a toilet seat that plays "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" every time you....well you know.
Rhoads did well. His defensive philosophy is definitely more conservative, but it had its advantages. Remember, last season we didn't get totally blown out by UGA with Stafford and Knowshone, unlike when Boom was the man. Rhoads did well and I can see why he was Tuberville's choice before Chizik earlier in the decade. He is the type of coordinator I want, a solid guy that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to be a head coach. Then he became the head coach at Iowa State, so what do I know?
An interesting question. Both Chizik and Boom did well at Auburn. Which of them would you prefer as your DC?
I would like to have Muschamp's coaching of the front 7 with Chizik's coaching of the secondary.
Chizik over Boom.
i would Chiz over Boom too. you would've have all the flair and F-bombs on the sidelines, though, but i liked the Chiz better.
I agree with RK. Chizik was a a mastermind in the secondary and Boom was great with the LB's and Dline.
man, i can't type worth crap today.
Jay,
Nice roller coaster ride. Next year to save some cash you should just take the family to the mall and get inside one of the Delorian looking machines for $5.00 that throws you back and forth and shows roller coaster footage on film. Budget Cruncher

Well, the great cast of coaches that brought you such hits as the "Tiger Prowl" and "Big Cat Weekend" are excited to bring you "Stars and Stipes Weekend". The latest of the their big box office hits. Details to come closer to the actual event. I'm pumped for it. Especialy the fireworks display promised at the end.
nice. seeing fireworks from JHS would be pretty pimp.
Scottie- I think the fireworks may be for figurative than literal, but overall, I do agree with you about fireworks at JHS.
And with two posts, you can be certain that it's serious pumpage.
well dangit. Eddie deleted the post and now my post looks silly.
I was of the opinion that T'sharvan the Interceptor Bell was recruited as Safety. I didn't know he was moved. I hope his leg / foot has recovered fully.
Auburn will score 30 on average. Yep.
WDE.
Aeronaut- I know not what you speak of :)!!!!
Where are you hearing/seeing this about Stars and Stripes weekend?
I have heard some grumblings about the 18th... With a serious fireworks display.
But, if there is some solid info out there. I'd love to hear it.
Last year I was hoping to get 7 more points than the year before. I thought AU would have a very good season. However, as we know, we did worse.
Barring any injuries, I think we can increase the scoring by 7 points per game.
D.Miller- Nothing official at this point, but looks very promising that will be the title of the weekend. I belive it to be the weekend of the 18th, but not completely sure. Anyways, just sharing the fun.
It's not mandatory to have a high-scoring offense to do well in the SEC.
The National Champion Florida Gators of 2006 averaged only 22.25 point in REGULAR season SEC play and never scored more than 28 in a regular season game.
If we're going to win anytime soon it's going to be with defense. It takes a few years to get players to run this type of offense. Having said that, I think Malzahn is absolutely excellent at designing an offense around the players at hand so I won't go so far as to discount an average of 30...but probably not going to happen.
Auburn scores more then 30 a game?
No way jose =(
Jhag speaks the truth.
Cue Al Davis, with the "Just win, baby."
Changing the subject for a moment, but just wanted to second j-z's review of "The Hangover" from yesterday. I went to see it last night - hilarious! Not for the easily offended, though.
In honor of PPL still being on the team, I'm trying out a new avatar stolen from theauburner.com. It may be too hard to see, though, so could be short-lived.
That 2006 Florida team had good special teams and a really good D.
Plus their offense stayed on the field a lot, didn't make mistakes and kept their D fresh. So while they didn't score a lot in SEC games, they kept the D fresh.
The Hangover is hilarious.
Hangover is beyond hilarious.
Going to see The Hangover this weekend.
Hag - Ole Miss?
I'm going to have a hangover from reading all these posts about the hangover.
Yep, too hard to see. Go to theauburner.com if you want to see it full-sized. It's a kind of amusing Photoshop pic of Frenchy that they are using for their banner.
Eddie, which QB would you want if he was playing with a hangover?
wish I had a margartia
i think you've already had something
Scott- Kodi Burns.
am i typing tipsy?
i've had aqua only
we have new NO BOOZE policy here at the office
Bobby Layne...come to think of it, I think he usually did play with a hangover
No booze at the office? That's ridiculous. How do they expect anyone to make it to the end of the day?
i'm considering filing suit
I thought Monica worked from home???? Hmm.
i'm guessing Joe Namath could play pretty well with a hangover. just throwing that out there.
JUST the first day for applications there today Monica no worries
If jhag doesn't commit to AU soon, I'm afraid we may have to focus interest elsewhere.
do we need to do a 'HABOTN Tiger Prowl' for Jhag?
monica works part time in a real life office of a non-profit organization
We drink all day and all night where I work.
Mon also works one part time job as a projectionist. See, a movie doesn't come all on one big reel. It comes on a few.
I agree that Chiz was a better DC than Boom, although both were good. Chiz just wasn't as big of a risk taker and was responsible for the defense that delivered "the hit" in the 2004 UGA game. I bet Brown still flinches every time someone mentions it.
I'll bet he also flinches if you clap your hands right in front of his face if he is not expecting it. I don't guess that is a big deal, though, because most humans do that also.
sorry, i had a FIGHT CLUB moment there Monnie. i love that movie.
my boss keeps a jar of moonshine in his office mini fridge.
You're allowed one FC moment a day.
Moonshine was the first alcohol I ever tasted. Given to me by a TRM football player who went on to be an Auburn football player.
Michael: We drink all day and all night where I work.
That would certainly explain the headgear.
i live in Knoxville and i've never tried the stuff.
they had an old moonshiner named 'Popcorn' who was in his 80's up here. he was arrested multiple times and in his final days was sentenced to house-arrest. there were FREE POPCORN bumper stickers and t-shirts all over. pretty funny.
FREE POPCORN = good stuff
Scottie B- I thought your local fast food joints served moonshine as a fountain drink
you would think so THT but no. maybe up in Campbell County, but not in Knox Co.
I don't want to reveal too much of PMarsh's for your eyes only stuff, but the comments there make me believe that Aairon Savage is very likely out for the season but will try to come back with a 6th season of elligibility. Man, that kid had some bad luck.
I refuse to compare Boom and Chiz. It could cause a nuclear reaction that could vaporize us all.
Stars and Stripes chatter is crazy crazy.
injury bug already biting us and we haven't even started practicing.
Someone get the CDC to fast-track an antidote.
I would say Chizik was a better DC than Muschamp, but, honestly, I would have picked Muschamp over Chizik as HC. Hopefully, Auburn made the right choice with Chizik.
I wish the rumored event was the 11th and not the 4th or 18th. I could be at Toomer's on the 11th. And no, the athletic dept wouldn't have to publicize it.
I wouldn't want Muschamp as a head coach. I don't think he has the temperament for the job.
Here's a big shout out to all you Fatties in Alabama
Don't mention the "f" word here THT. People are super sensitive...and hungry
Steve, that is certainly a legitimate argument regarding Muschamp, but I think he is the type of coach that players would line up to come play for. Regardless, I am now behind Chizik, he put together a great staff and they have helped create some buzz about Auburn that has been missing for a while.
This blows, and is copied from news.yahoo
Gannett Co. Inc Co, which owns top-selling newspaper USA Today, is laying off more than 1,000 staff to try and combat persistent declines in revenue, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.
The cuts will come from the company's Community Publishing division, which groups more than 80 local dailies, the newspaper citing a person familiar with the company's thinking as saying.
Number 1 is in sight! Quick, everyone start eating! Mississippi is going down!
it will be very interesting to see if/how Boom mellows out in the years to come as he is groomed for Mack's chair. I agree with Steve that Booms temperament is not what I would want in a HC.
We can't let Mississippi top us in anything, not even teen pregnancies!!!
If I move to Auburn the contest is over. AL wins.
So, Harrison, what exactly is your strategy in the "teen pregnancy contest" between MS & AL?
Hotties, I'm OTD. Gotta go take Molly dog to the vet :-(
WARRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
just read where karl malden died. he was great in a lot of films, but definitely great in patton.
I wasn't upset over the hiring of Chizik and probably not quite as surprised as many, although I was certainly surprised. I had wondered if he was an option in case Boom didn't take the jog.
After seeing what Chizik has done, I am convinced he was the right choice. Whether that translates into wins is still up for grabs, but I like the choices he has made and appreciate how he has represented Auburn.
The last thing that has encouraged me is the 3 players that got tossed off the team. While none of them were starters, we are definitely a team in need of depth. A good coach will get rid of players for breaking the rules, regardless of the consequences to the win/loss record. Chiz had the balls to do that.
When I see Carl Malden, I always think of the Streets of San Francisco. He was a great actor.
who is Karl Malden?
Auburnsports.com is reporting that Da'Shaun Barnes and Andre Wadley will go on medical hardship and remain in school. I knew Wadley was unlikely to play, but hadn't heard about Barnes. The LB pool continues to shrink.
Carl Malden was a famous dog breeder in South Texas.
Malden played a general in the movie Patton and he was Michael Doaglas' co-star in the Streets of San Francisco.
By the way, if I am not mistaken both Malden and Michael Jackson were from Gary, Indiana.
Malden also did those great American Express commercials- "Don't leave home without it."
does his dog business overlap with your goat business?
30 pts. per game we will score says yoda.
The Hangover = Dumb and Dumber and Borat on a bachelor party road trip. Watching will require ..."tolerance".
We're in our early 50's...Wifey cringed a lot....I laughed a lot. The "twentysomethings" howled throughout the movie. The phrase "off the chain" seemed appropriate.
The movie conjured up blurry memories of familiar situations from years ago. Some of those memories had been carefully packed away for good reason.
The whole world has seen Hangover except me, and movies like that are made for guys like me
What game will give us a good idea of how good our offense will be?
Is there any question that Harris Gaston will play early? Jonathon Evans and Dee Ford will probably be pushed into some PT at LB too.
This is our entire roster of scholly LB's
C. Stephens - Jr.
J. Bynes - Jr.
E. Freeman - Jr.
S. Pybus - So.
H. Gaston - tFr.
J. Evans - tFr
D. Ford - tFr (recruited as DE)
Is N. Eguae fast enough to play any LB?
Eguae is likely too slow, I think around a 4.9/40. I do think Ford is much quicker. I had assumed they would beef up Eguae a bit.
Keep in mind that our depth at defensive end isn't great either, especially since Savage has been given the opportunity to pursue other interests.
I wonder if there is a runninback that might become a LB.
Harrison, this one time I will answer a question about my business: no.
Auburn has about the same number of QB's on the roster as there are linebackers and offensive lineman. That can't be considered a good thing.
Due to personal reasons, both medical and moral, I will be unable to help in the teen pregnancy. I also have shotgun handy for anyone who gets near my daughter.
PS ... Watched Karl Malden the other night in The Cincinnati Kid. A very solid actor who held him well with George C. Scott in Patton, with Marlon Brando in Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, and Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson in The Cincinnati Kid. Takes a heck of an actor to be a dynamite supporting actor over and over.
can we get blackmon back?
Jet, that's the way I feel about my fave supp. actor...Clint Howard
You're not alone Harrison,
I haven't seen Hangover yet either.
you said it, jet.
Every time someone mentions the number of QBs we have on scholarship I get this annoying desire to pound my head into the keyboard.
I think Blackmon made a terribly stupid move heading to the CFL. Coverage isn't his thing and the CFL is a pass happy league. Yea, it would have been good to have him around, but in terms of what was best for him, I think he screwed himself.
Steve, I presume Tray's choices were CFL or Krystal. I think he made the only choice, unless he likes hanging out with stoners and drunks at 5 a.m.
Wait a minute, he did screw up.

They way our defense is shaping up, we will need to score at least 30 points a game to even be competitive. What a bad time to have a 28 commit cap in the SEC!
I haven't seen Hangover, either. Maybe when it's on DVD
to me, blackmon had playmaker written all over him. sure, he messed up from time to time, but i thought he was going to be huge if/when he matured.
Scott I think Blackmon did mature. He decided it was time for him to take care of his children. Just wish he had matured a little earlier.
Our defense should be very solid. It probably won't be quite as good as last season, but hopefully it won't need to be.
aubigcat, in a non football, yet commendable way, he did. i'm just selfish.
We lose two more backups. This is starting to seem leboesque.
Let's work on our red zone offense here, folks!
Run it up, Herman! Leave no doubt!
It is interesting that Tray Blackmon beat our Lemarcus "The Doobie Brother" Rowell for the starting middle linebacker for Calgary. In case you don't remember, Rowell was a very high profile linebacker recruit who was kicked off the team twice for loving the sweat leaf.
C'mon, Steve!
Bring it home!
Well, I do believe Lemarcus redefined the high in high profile. It is nice to see he found a way to earn a buck though.
Championships are won in the offseason. C'mon Hotties, go!
Down!
Up!
Down!
Up!
thanks for the link SFC. it was nice to read about Tray. i wish him the best. WDE TB!
