HAPPY DAVE BECK DAY!!!
Huntsville native Dave Beck was an All-SEC and ACADEMIC All-SEC cornerback for the 1972 Amazin's. His sure hands placed him No. 2 on Auburn's list of career interceptions, trailing only Buddy McClinton. Beck led the Tigers with 6 inteceptions during his first year with the varsity in 1970. His sure hands were also of great utility as holder for Auburn's extra point and field goal attempts, playing a crucial role in Auburn's 17-16 win over UA-T in the 1972 Iron Bowl as he calmly handled an errant snap on Auburn's first PAT.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to witness that Iron Bowl, but I did attend the 1972 Gator Bowl. The 9-1 Auburn Tigers were 11-point underdogs to the 8-3 Colorado Buffaloes. Beck's 5 unassisted tackles, fumble recovery and interception helped Auburn build a 17-3 lead. But Mr. Beck wasn't finished. With under two minutes remaining, he threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to TE Dan Nugent and Auburn proved the oddsmakers wrong for the seventh time that season.
The 24-3 dismantling of Colorado propelled the 10-1 Tigers to a Top 5 ranking in the final AP Poll.

A little CFL update for the Hottest of the Hots:
Prechae Rodriguez caught 3 balls for 33 yards in today's 23-33 Hamilton loss.
Tray Blackmon made three tackles in Calgary's 35-38 loss to Edmonton. Blackmon was injured in the fourth quarter on a questionable block. He got an MRI on his ankle and is still awaiting the results.
Damon Duval was 3-3 on field goals and 4 for 4 on extra points in Montreal's 39-12 win. Duval also punted nine times with a long of 60 yards.
When is the CFL going to wise up and broden the fan base in lower North America by partnering with EA Sports for Canadian Football as a vg?
I would love a Canadian football video game.
Would it fare better than the arena football franchise?

So... not to pile on the "I'd rather not talk about last year" comments from the videos this weekend, I just read this little gem from Eric Smith (via EW): "Coach (Gus) Malzahn is a perfectionist. He runs everything at a two-minute pace, and we didn't really run it like that last year."
I'm so ready to get these guys on the field to see what it's really like.

I wonder how Eric Smith will fit in with this system. He strikes me as a power guy, short yardage specialist.
THT - going back to your Tucker Frederickson post...did you know that you are almost impossible to argue with? Nice job! I am not old enough to have seen him play, but I have read about him and heard some stories from my dad. I have one of his football cards from when he played with the Giants. That thing could use an autograph!

Trey Gainous deserves a shoutout ... he had a punt return for a TD as a freshman in Knoxville, but also had a HUGE-MONGUS catch against UAT in the game winning drive.
I believe it was 4th and 4 or 5 when Gainous came in motion from the right side, turned up field at the snap, dragging from left to right across the middle. He made a sliding catch of a low throw from Burger.
A couple of runs later, and and we were inside the UAT 10 to set up the Burger pitch to Tim Jessie, who handed off on the reverse for the TD.
If Gainous doesn't make that catch, UAT wins the game.

One of my favorite players Dave Bck. He was Lee High School(of Huntsville) Qurterback and a really good one. He stood only 5'7 3/4" tall but was a giant on the football field. How he evergot to play at a big SEC school like Auburn I will never know.
Remember when the CFL was in such classy places as Shreveport, LA?

Memphis' professional football history has been funny. We did have Lex Luger (the wrestler) and Reggie White on the USFL showboats team, but it has been downhill from there. We had the Mad Dogs in the CFL and the Pharaohs in the Arena league and some XFL team also. And of course, the Tennessee Oilers played there for a couple of years while they waited on their stadium. I remember Memphis getting a lot of bad press because they never sold many tickets to the Oilers games. Of course, they finally did for the Pittsburgh Steelers-Oilers game, and the crowd was about 75% Pittsburgh fans. Go Memphis!
How about a little Jaret Holmes memory?
I like the dangerous mystique surrounding Memphis.

That 1997 Iron Bowl was incredible. Let me say this. I usually support our coach, but if we lose an Iron Bowl the way Bama lost that one, the coach should be given his walking papers before he leaves the stadium.
I thought Superman beat up Lex Lugar real bad or something, but it has been a long time since I saw that movie.
I expect PPL to be back in some capacity on Tuesday.
From the previous thread, thanks mytommyd for your encouragement. I have settled in as IV and will try to offer some meaningful substance to the HOBTON family of true Auburn friends. I have enjoyed the videos of the Auburn wins over the Evil Empire. I sure wished that there was one of our total beat down of the enemy from my freshman year when we put a real hurting on them, 40 to 0 in 1957. Of course, that was a catalyst for them to get busy and get the Bahr home. It was 34 to 0 at halftime. Shug was a true gentleman and did not run the score up on them in the second half even though he could have. WAR EAGLE!!!

There's nothing like second-rate (at best) minor league football. When the Birmingham Americans won the World Football League title in 1974 (I believe), they celebrated their victory in the lockerroom while sheriff's deputies supervised the repossession of all the team's equipment.
The XFL was my favorite upstart league, although I only watched about half of one game.
Seriously, did NBC actually think that people would buy into Vince McMahon running a football league?
I think it's championship game is still the lowest rated prime time broadcast in network TV history.

I agree, jet. My sister is done with her classes for the day. Now she's off with some new friends to the Gump to get a homecooked meal. First day of classes and she's already got a friend bringing her home for food.
I'm not sure if this girl lives in the dorm with her or is one of her new sorority sisters.
It was at least a month before I got a homecooked meal after I moved to college. She gets one after the first day of class.
I'm goi g to gave to find out if she has any classes with football players. She is in the sociology dept.
My wife had a class with Tre Smith, TJ Jackson, and a bunch of footballers back a few years ago. Apparently the discussion of race relations came up, and teh significance of the N word was discussed. According to my wife, Tre Smith said to another player in the class, "Hey (insert football player's name. My wife can't remember who), remember the time I said 'What's up my n____' and you got really mad at me?"
That story makes me laugh, because I could totally see Tre as being the guy who thinks he's buddy-buddy enough with someone to use that word.

Either four or "eye vee", I am not particular. As I said yesterday, I am the fourth in line in my family to have my name, very proud of that fact. More proud that I come from a long line of Auburn supporters in my family.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens with Caudle. He could end up the number 2 guy, but it seems unlikely at this point. Hopefully he will find a way to contribute in other ways, possibly holding kicks. The kid has had a rough time on the plains. I don't think he has ever been able to adjust to the speed of the college game, but that is only a guess on my part.
Well, shoot, Miller. Sorry about that. I guess I only looked at the SEC schedule....

Read something on Lex Lugar a year (or more?) ago. All this is from memory so take it with a grain of salt.
He was on a flight either to or from the left coast when he had a severe pain in his neck. Tried to "Correct it himself" - pop his own neck or something. Had to take him off the plane on stretcher and spent a good amount of time paralyzed from a blown out disc. Spent many months at Shepard Clinic here in Atlanta. He "found religion" during this time and was living at Shepard while mentoring to other paraplegics. I think he has limited mobility back now and can walk - some what. He is also just about broke.

j-z, I just wasn't sure you had the time to be a full-fledged hoodlum, given the hours you put into being a hooligan. In either case, you were definitely not holding the clipboard (or so I've heard).
Not that his experience isn't real, but it's amazing how many people who used to have money hit rock bottom and then find religion.
I'm terribly upset now. I just saw a commercial for Reverse Mortgages and the "senior citizen" woman looking into it doesn't look all that much older to me. I guess I'll have to look into one too. I'm sure my AARP membership information is soon to hit my mailbox. Dangit.
