HAPPY FREDERICKSON - CRIBBS DAY!!!

Two superlative Auburn football players honored today.

Born in Ft. Lauderdale and a graduate of South Broward High in Hollywood, Fla., Ivan Charles "Tucker" Frederickson and I have two things in common. We both went to Auburn with dreams of being a veterinarian, and neither one of us is. That's obviously where the similarities end. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Tiger was one of the last of the two-way players, and one of the best. Tucker was described by Coach Jordan as "the most complete football player I have seen in the 38 years I have been connected with the game."

He was a consensus All-American (as a safety) and SEC MVP in 1964, a year in which he finished sixth in the Heisman vote. Frederickson was a two-time winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. He led Auburn in rushing in 1964 and led the team with 4 interceptions in 1963 (1964 defensive data is unavailable). Will Walls, scout for the Pittsburgh Steelers, said of Frederickson, "He'd go in the first round of the NFL draft at five different positions - running back, fullback, tight end, cornerback or safety. He's the best blocker in the country and the best safety. He can be something else as a runner with his size and speed."

Tucker Frederickson was the NUMBER ONE pick in the 1965 NFL draft and earned a trip to the NFL Pro Bowl in his rookie season! Unfortunately, he then blew out a knee and missed the entire 1966 season. He returned for 5 more seasons with the Giants, but never regained his original form.

Tucker Frederickson is a member of the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Although he graduated from Auburn with a science degree, he became a serious student of finance, joining the Allen & Co. investment firm while playing in the NFL, rising to a position of vice-president for investment banking. After 15 years on Wall Street, he returned to his native Florida where he continued work in securities and also reportedly developed several golf courses of renown.

As a testament to his worthiness for top billing in today's Kickoff Kountdown, Tucker Frederickson was the highest vote getter for Auburn's 1892-1992 All-Century Team. Yep, he got more votes than any of the Auburn Heisman or Outland Trophy winners.

Phillip Marshall wrote an excellent article about Mr. Frederickson which I encourage all the Hotties to read. He recounts the story of when Tucker showed up on his Auburn recruiting visit with nothing but 3 bottles of Jack Daniels.

As deserving as Tucker Frederickson is of top billing, I just can't see relegating one of my personal all-time favs, Joe Cribbs, to "just" honorable mention. The Sulligent, Ala., native is still Auburn's 4th all-time leading rusher, accumulating 3,368 yards and a 5.13 yds/carry average. He was a two-time All-SEC performer, AFC Rookie of the year, and the only rookie to start in the 1980 Pro Bowl. Since May 2008, Mr. Cribbs has been Commissioner of the as-yet-to-get-off-the-ground UNFL/UNGL.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* Danny Arnold: Graciously surrenders his #20 jersey to Joe Cribbs when the latter arrived on campus.

* (Added by Jay G.) Damon Duval, swell punter and disavowed rebel. Played from 1999-2002.

Y'all HOTTIES step up now. Don't leave all the shout-outs to me. LET'S HEAR IT FOR OTHER 20s!!!

There was once an anonymous poster who signed his real name, was berated for it, then chose Tim. He was also berated for not picking something cooler than Tim, but there's something catchy about a name as simple as Tim. At that point, all anonymous posters became Tim.

Correct.

I use "Tim" in my personal life to describe an unnamed person.

Do you have a feel for any of our coaches getting either nominated for or receiving end of the year honors, such as Chizik as SEC coach of the year?

I am thinking that Justin Albert may have missed an opportunity that he had worked hard for with the scholarship openings that we now have. I know that it is customary to wait for walkons to become seniors before they hand out schollys, but Justin was making waves and showing real potential. However, I like the way that this new staff is enforcing its rules. I think they are doing a better job than the last crew.

Blogger Jet said...

Matt ...

Some will be there ... I know Norm is headed that way.

12:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is hard to be better than Joe Cribbs, but Tucker Fredrickson may have been the best player to ever play for Auburn. Unfortunately I was too young to remember seeing him play, but there is plenty of stories out there about this guy. He was a great one.

12:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

MT, it is hard to believe this crew could enforce rules any better than CTT did. I do agree that they are doing a great job. They know they need every player they can get, but that didn't stop them from booting people that wouldn't follow the rules. They have earned a lot of respect in my opinion.

Michael's Tim claiming to have been called Tim as anonymous by me makes me feel how Wilt Chamberlain must have felt when random people showed up claiming to be his kid. I am sure you are right, but I ain't gonna remember your momma, and you ain't getting any money out of me.

Blogger cincytiger said...

The only thing I remember about Tucker Fredrickson is Brian Piccolo talking about him in the movie, Brian's Song. "Ole Tuck, he went to Allburn,"

1:05 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

If Rollison is chosen as the number 2 quarterback, is there a position Caudle could be moved to so he can play? Similar to Kodi's move to WR? Surely there must be a place for him.

1:07 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Caudle could be the holder on kicks...or at least of the clipboard.

Ah, yes, Damon Duval day. The guy who was a great kicker two out of his 4 years at Auburn, but somehow stunk it up his freshman and senior years.

Also well known for booming it out of the endzone when we needed a punt inside the 20 and shanking it when we needed a booming kick.

However, best know for his blonde hair and angering Tub in the 99 UT game by throwing a pass on a fake punt that went higher than most punts allowing Deon Grant to run from one side of the field to the other to knock the ball away from a wide open Travarious Robinson.

1:11 PM
Blogger michael said...

I'll never forget the fake punt Tubs called for Duval on 4th and 20 on our own 10 against Florida in 2002. And it wasn't even a passing fake, it was a running fake. That might have been the dumbest call I have ever seen.

Duval had that amazing run in '01. What was it, 3 games in a row or something won on his kicks? That was awesome.

1:18 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I always forget the fake punt in Florida in 2002 which was probably the biggest bonehead in game call in Tub's career, but I always remember, Duval with a chip shot to win the game and kicking barely above the line and getting it blocked to send the game to OT. If he had kicked it like he would a PAT, we win the game.

In 2001 we beat Vandy, Miss State and Florida three straight weeks on Duval FG's.

In 2000 and 2001 he was a good kicker, but 1999 and 2002 he wasn't good at all.

Blogger Aubie said...

In my world, Tim = Earl.
Wife, "What's her husband's name again?"
Me (not knowing), "Earl" (with conviction)
Wife, "sigh"

1:35 PM
Blogger michael said...

You know what's weird about that missed extra point length FG in '02? Seems like everyone in our section knew he would miss it. He had been struggling quite a bit up to that point. Much more apprehension than is normal for that short of a chip shot.

1:41 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Can't argue with Tucker being the Man on 21 day - though I was too young to remeber his exploits.

I have some memorable games filed away about Mr. Cribbs though. Electrifying!! When Auburn didn't have much to be electrified by. Favorite memory is a trip to Sanford Stadium when both Brooks and Cribbs each put +100 yards on the 'Dogs- I beleive we pulled out the Orange jerseys for that one too.

Nice picks THT.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAG!

1:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Duval was very quick. That came in handy at times.

As for Caudle, holding for kicks makes sense, but I can't think of another position he would fit into. He has had surgery on both his knees, so although he is fast, I can't really see him playing receiver.

The real question is if Rollison should be the number 2. If Todd is good for the year and Caudle could be an adequate backup, it might be better to redshirt Rollison and save the year of eligibility. The only thing would be we might end up starting an inexperienced QB next season if Caudle couldn't handle things early in the season.

From Brent's Schoening's Caring Bridge site:

With broken heart I will try to write this update. Brent left us for a better place this morning. He started having severe problems aroung 2:30 this morning. But as you know Brent, he wasn't leaving his precious wife without a fight. As you know he has been fighting for almost a year now. And this last battle was not any different. He would not give up, we talked and told him to rest, but noooooo, he finally wore us out. We were in the room, some sleeping, some watching over, and then around 10:30 his breathing changed from a struggle to a real struggle. We all talked to him and loved on him and his dad kissed his head and told him he loved him and to rest--then he was gone. Yes, I know, breaks your heart. We are heart broken, but he will have no more pain and suffering. But we aren't losing the sick patient, we have lost the wonderful young husband, son, brother, nephew, cousin, son-in-law and friend that walked in this hospital almost a year ago to date.

Padraig may be an IRA terrorist ... trying to kill his playing partner with a shot. He looked like me yakking it around out there on the par 3.

3:35 PM
Blogger boknowsbo said...

I feel for Mr. Caudle, but if Tyrik is close and improving quickly, I'd like to see him at #2 and getting ready to be the man for the next 3 years. How cool would it be to have a qb start for us 2 years in a row not named Cox?

3:39 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Why did we go 6-4 in '64?

Because Jimmy Sidle's throwing arm rotator cuff was torn in the very first game, thus elimiinating a balanced offense and threat of the forward pass.

Why did Jimmy Sidle's rotator cuff get torn?

Because Sports Illustrated predicted AU to be #1 and put Sidle on the cover just before the season started.

She is now at The Summit!

Hey THT, I read with interest that you came to AU planning on being a veterinarian.

So did my lovely bride - she, too, failed in her quest, and left AU without getting accepted into vet school. But she never abandoned her goal, and 10 years after her initial disappointment on the Plains, she received her DVM from Mississippi State.

And thus I'm living every mother's dream - I'm married to a Doctor.

Freep - I didn't fail in my quest. I just chickened out. During my junior year my arm went somewhere I knew it would have to go in vet school, but where I decided I really didn't want it to go ever again. I switched majors to zoology and didn't pursue the vet school option.

Watching Joe Cribbs run for 200 yds against UGA 2 Sanford stadium in 1979 was priceless.
