Days to kickoff: 25

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute* is brought to you by the number:

25

*=FOR THE ANONYMOUS EMAILER WHO GOES BY "MIKE PRICELESS": The following post was written by Tar Heel Tiger, who is an esteemed member of our community. I, Jay G. Tate, did not write the following passage. If the previous two sentences don't sufficiently convey the fact that Tar Heel Tiger wrote this piece, please contact me again. Perhaps I can call you on the phone and read to you. Polysyllabic words can be tricky in print.

Roy Haynes "Monk" Gafford, Jr. was born in 1920; he was a native of Fort Deposit, Ala. Monk was a three-year starter at halfback and was the very first Auburn back to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.

He was recognized by the Touchdown Club of Atlanta as the SEC Player of the Year in 1941 and achieved All-American honors in 1942. The Birmingham Quarterback Club named Gafford as its 1942 SEC Player of the Year; in my biased opinion they showed a little better judgment than the national voters, who gave Heisman Trophy honors in 1942 to Georgia's Frankie Sinkwich.

Monk Gafford's most famous game was in 1942 against Sinkwich's top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, a team which also included future All-American Charlie Trippi. Georgia had beaten Florida 75-0, a team which had beaten Auburn 6-0. The Dawgs outweighed the Auburn team by an average of over 20 lbs/man. Unequivocally, the best player on the field that day was neither Sinkwich nor Trippi, but our very own Monk Gafford. Auburn's #25 had 119 yards rushing on 21 carries, and added another 92 yards on three punt returns in leading Auburn to the stunning 27-13 upset.

For his Auburn career, Monk averaged a lofty 6.4 yards per carry. LSU coach Bernie Moore called Gafford "the best back the SEC had seen in the last 10 years." (1942 was the 10th year of the SEC).

Immediately following college, Gafford entered the Army in service to his country during World War II. He was the first officer with men taking over the infamous Dachau prison camp. As soon as the war was over, Monk served as player/coach of the Army's European Theater Operations championship football team. General George Patton proclaimed Monk Gafford the best back he'd ever seen.

After the war, Gafford spent a few years in the All-American Football Conference, the first with the Miami Seahawks and two subsequent seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He went on to a business career in Tulsa, Okla., before returning to his native state for retirement. Monk Gafford was elected to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* One of my favorites, HB/DB Tommy Lorino, from the '57 National Champs

* FB Wallace Clark in the late '60s.

* DB Roger Mitchell: He blocked the first kick against UA-T in 1972...no, not the punt, the extra point after UA-T's first TD, thus providing Auburn's eventual 17-16 margin of victory. I never get tired of watching him hurdle an upright Bisceglia on the 2nd punt block play.

* HB Tim Jessie, an outstanding back who was understandably overshadowed by Bo & Brent.

JG, Wallace Clark & Tommy Lorino are in the wrong spots. Clark was from '72 & Lorino was from '57.

Now it gets interesting from 24 down! Should be fun to see THT's list. We are almost 3 weeks away from football. AWESOME!!!!

Edie-Who are your final two for QB after this scrimmage?

7:53 AM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Random question, but is Ian Fitzsimmons off of the Roundtable in Birmingham? His bio is still on the website, but I haven't heard him in two to three weeks. Of course I have been at the beach, so haven't been around much.

Inquiring minds want to know...

7:54 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

WTC- I say Caudle and Rollison and I'm serious. But Gus did leave the door open for a 3rd guy to still "technically" be in the mix and that would be Chris Todd. I think you may see Kodi looking to transfer out of Auburn before the season begins to either play at a lower division right away or to another D1 school to Redshirt and be good to play 2 more years. That's my thoughts on the QB race.

7:56 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Rollison and Caudle will be the finalists.

I'm not Eddie but I like to interject. Excuse me.

I say Todd is in there.

8:01 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I hear that Todd knows the offense better than most and will make 2 to 3 throws that are just great and then follows it up with 2-3 throws that are just completely off. Anyword on his arm strength Jay G? I've heard that it doesn't seem to be quite 100% and it is affecting his confidence in getting the ball down the field.

Blogger cincytiger said...

Eddie,
What have you done to lose so much weight - and if you say "I just quit eating chocolate and ice cream" I'll kick your tail!

8:04 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Cincy- Excercise mainly and learning what I could and couldn't eat and the portion control. Getting on the scale every single day keeps you honest and let's you know if you are doing well on a daily basis. I was very strict from Monday to Thursday and more relaxed on the diet on the weekends.

8:07 AM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Well, I'm very impressed. Anyone who can lose over 100 pounds in a year is pretty special in my book. Guess I have put off exercise long enough for this morning - off to do booty camp! Wish it was as exciting as it sounds.

Thanks Cincy! Enjoy Booty Camp!

as much as i hate getting up early like i have the past 2 weeks to run with Tucker it has really made a difference. i exercise regularly anyways, but i can really tell. i feel kinda lazy, though, b/c my cap is 3 miles. i used to run 6 all the time....10 years ago. i need to channel my inner 'El Toro' and go full speed all the time.

8:14 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Scottie- For some reason I see you as another Terry Tate- Office Linebacker if you go full speed like el Toro does.

Terry Tate is the man. i need to YouTube him.

it's funny, but when i'm out there running and hating going up those hills i'm thinking "my Auburn Tigers are working MUCH harder than this so shut up whiny boy." it hasn't quite helped me stop whining yet but i'm trying.

8:27 AM

Running, can't do it anymore. I ran track and cross country in high school for 3 years. Now the thought of running for an extended period of time gives me shin splints.

mornin.. keep it coming tht,,,,

for Todd it is all about the arm...if he is not #1 he will never be #2 since it would be the arm keeping him from the top. If I was CGM I would groom next in line rather than spend time on a senior.

IT is do or Die for CT .. no such thing as #2 for him

My guess at the final two are Todd and Caudle. It would be nice to see Caudle be the man. Supposedly he is a great runner too, although since he has had surgery on both his knees, I wonder how excited he would be to run.

I will stick with Todd being the guy, but if it turns out being Caudle, it would be a great surprise.

Regardless of who it is, I hope they do have someone in mind as the starter for next season.

RK- Excercise and diet for the first 6 months and then it became a lifestyle change that has been a breeze to keep up with. I have the opposite problem now, trying not to lose any more weight and stay where i'm at so that I don't look like i'm on an african adopt-a-child commercial.

THT- 18...hmmm. I'll get back to you on that. Ryan Hooker :)!

No love for Ronnie Daniels? He was the one weapon we had in 99 (if you don't count undersized RBs galore). The memory of him beating up on the DB on his way to the end zone against UGA is a favorite of mine. Later he dunked over the goal post and TT went ballistic.

10:39 AM
Blogger Dan Armstrong said...

Just wanted to give Ronnie a shout out, Monk Gafford deserves top billing but if we are going to mention M. Houston....

Never understood why RD nor Tim Carter (for that matter) didn't do better at the next level.

Speaking of favorite WRs, Frank Sanders is supposedly signed on to JOX here in bammerham for a TBD role (roving host perhaps). I was hoping they'd get rid of the other idiot who ruined the noonish time slot alongside Ian F and let Frank and the prerequisite bammer hold down that slot.

Great job THT and JGT, as usual
Blake will play this year.
Is Kodi really out of the race? Hard to believe but watching what little we can see on videos his mechanics are still off.
Todd does not look as smooth as one would expect. Arm still not 100% who knows.

the Gator Bowl would be cool. AU has some good history there. Shug's last bowl team won the Gator led by All-American Mike Fuller in '73. :)

plus, it would be a new place to travel to for the holidays.

Was the Priceless poster the one that was deleted?

I have a few rumors but because it is medical I will not list them here. It was non-football related and anyone one of us can have it occur just out of the blue. It happened int he athletic complex and (from what I was told) and they are being very cautious with him. He may be back shortly though. (From what I hear)

11:03 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

The Gator Bowl would be cool. It's funny that this just came up, as my dad and I had a big conversation about AU's history in the Gator Bowl just a couple of weeks ago. AU went there 3 of 5 bowl seasons in the early 70's. We beat Ole Miss with Archie Manning, then Colorado, then Texas with Earl Campbell.

11:07 AM
Blogger Aubie said...

THT, I like your teaser on the highlighted Tiger in one week. That would be number 18.
Racking my brain for an 18... Randy Walls, Foster Christy ?

11:13 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Ronney Daniels against UGa was a truly fantastic game. He definitely deserves a big shout out!

My dad and I were at the Gator Bowls vs Archie (I think his left arm was still in a cast?) and vs the Buffalos. We didn't make the one after the '74 season.

Archie's 159 yd scramble (I think it netted about 50 yds) is still the play I remember most about the first one. The Buffalo getting loose during pre-game is what I remember about the 2nd one.

JGT - am I in trouble with Mike Priceless?

Big Bird,

Tim Carter wasn't tall enough and didn't run the best routes to be a big time player in the NFL.

Jay, are you saying that because is says "Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute" that doesn't mean JGT wrote this? Hmmm, I do think you need to make that clear by putting it in a bold italic font. It should also probably be in RED. Also, you may want to have the text blinking. Just to make sure it catches someone's attention, you might also have arrows pointing to it, animated arrows would be best.

You also might want to include it on the first line of the blog so everyone will see it. Oh, you did that. Hmmm.

Well, you obviously didn't make it clear because you only included it in English. Please include Spanish, French, and Latin translations. Why Latin? What if the Pope visits the page?

I guess Daniels and Carter were some of the first WRs to get "Knoxed". They got worse the longer the were in the program.

Onward and upward I guess we have Trooper now so I hope we are better able to develop going forward.

Kidding aside, Blake Field was probably our best option (based on the one game I saw him play-homecoming 07) for last year but he saw the writing on the wall and skeedaddled.

Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

afternoon,

1. Yes, yes, the tickets are in route. Wife and I are excited we requested new seats this year, so we will see what we get.

2. Anyone watch the CSS flashback game last night? It was Ole Miss vs. UGA, Tubbs and crew were at the helm, 1996. Great game, but it waa funny to see the old coaches. I barely recognized Tubbs, he had dark hair. I guess like the presidency it greys you out.

3. Nice articles abound so far about the team, but until we get closer and play a game I have no clue. Last year burnt me forever. Since last season, I really never ever will know how we do. Last year was the oddest year ever.

4. Qb's, yea, weird but we only lose Todd next year. So lets say is the starter this year. Then next year we start this race all over again, same numbers because Trotter will be back from his ACL. If that happens it will be nausating. I like knowing who the guy is going to be.

I was flipping last night, caught a shot of Tubb's back and knew it was him by the way he was standing. I stopped and watched the 4th qtr of a very good game. It's gonna be weird seeing someone besides him patrolling the sideline.

12:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Okay, where do I sign up to be a member of this cliq thing. As you all know I always just agree with everything that goes on and am an All American at sucking up.

As for the scrimmage, I like seeing that the coaches have basically told the QBs it is time to step up or sit down. It sounds a bit cruel, but that is the kind of pressure QBs must be able to handle.

One of the more interesting things is that they will be rotating 4 QBs in the scrimmage. Kodi didn't react too well to rotating last season. He always seemed to need to be in for a while to get a rhythm. This doesn't bode well for him and Eddie is probably spot on when he anticipates Kodi transferring.

Anonymous Emailer spammed me for two years or so. He finally stopped earlier this year, but I guess he's back because he feels the HABOTN love and cannot turn away.

He also doesn't like "HOTTIES" because he doesn't understand why grown men would be called that.

I guess he's glossing over our esteemed and cherished female members. I find that disgraceful.

Mr. Chocolate,

You are in rare form today!

Got any Auburn chocolate left?

Oh my gosh, BinOBA, you made me quite the hit with my family. They LOVED the food, and the atmosphere.

I would love to have more of that wonderful tomato basil soup or the crab claws or the chicken roulade or the awesome seafood pasta. It was all wonderful and is definitely on our list of "must dos" on our yearly beach trip.

It is a definite for any of you Hotties visiting Orange Beach.

I know I sound like an advertising agency, but for those of you in B'ham, you need to try out Scott Chocolate's Auburn chocolates. I bought my kids chocolate CD's with the Auburn fight song printed on them (they come in CD cases, very cool) and AU suckers with Aubie on them. I also bought my husband a Auburn football field in dark chocolate, big, too, almost life sized! And like Monica said earlier, the white chocolate is delish!!

I'm going by to pick up more for our first tailgate.

Hotties - emergency trip to Phiiadelphia. I just learned MissTHT has not bothered to get her travel Visa. The consul we have to go to is in Philadelphia and they are only open MWF a.m. I can't wait til tomorrow to find out if there's still time to do it by mail (though I doubt it and there's NOTHING on their web site about TAT) because, in case there isn't time for mail, I can't go with her on Friday. MrsTHT would cut me if I let MissTHT go to Philadelphia alone, even though she is, at least theortetically, an adult.

Hope the remainder of your MONK GAFFORD DAY is a great one!!!

It's ROAD TRIP TIME! The good news? I'll be having my first Philly cheesesteak in about 10 years. It wouldn't surprise me if MissTHT planned it this way all along.

scottie b - doesn't matter how recently you rode. If you choose, you can rent a bike, have it trailered to the top of the mountain, and ride 17 miles downhill. You cross something like 39 old railroad trestles over the river on the way down.

Did anyone else listen to Coach Dye's old "outdoors" show on Monday nights just to hear him talk? I didn't even care about the subject matter but he had some good guests (like Ted Nugent who surprising still held a good natured grudge over the 83 Sugar Bowl) that made for good radio.

Priceless dude just needs to look at me to figure out that it's not cliquish here. Most people don't like me, yet I'm somehow still marginally accepted.

On a side note, I just spent $300+ on bow ties. Please shoot me.

Scottie B, you can get down this trail on anything but a true road bike. Old logging railway turned bike trail. Incredibly scenic, in fact, people come from all over the country to ride it.

huh?

3:18 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Steve, it's not so much he admitted it as someone found them.

If someone finds a pair of my pants 20 years from now on a bottom of a lake, I will for sure be proud of it.

When I hear Bow Ties - I think Farraknan.. Weird association for me.

yeah, Daphne is a touch closer to Atlanta, but not much. there were some other stops before atl but i am slowly workin my way back home....hopefully. i have a pretty good thing going right now here though, good job, Auburn is an hour and a half away, and home is only a few hours further.

3:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

I could quite easily lose a pair of pants at a lake. I have taken the trash down to the street many times in my underwear at my current house (after dark, of course). I can't imagine what all I'd do without pants if I were at a lakehouse.

3:20 PM

cool like BoKBo. looks fun. me & the wife need to get away for some non-football fun. maybe next year.

$300 on bow ties? PF? seriously?

3:22 PM
Blogger AUNugget said...

did you see the pants? i probably would have lost them too.

"hey i bet you buy a pair of pants* like this you get a free bowl of soup....looks good you though."

Blogger Monica said...

I have pictures of you herding the sheep without your pants.

3:24 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I see...he was known for his bow tie, wasn't he? I'm thinking more Ticker Carleson...wait, same thing.

I like how I can spill Jack Daniel's on my shirt, but it doesn't get on the tie when I'm wearing a bow tie. I figure I'm saving money that way.

3:24 PM
Blogger j-z said...

PF, Please tell me the bow ties are for your impending nuptials.

I've lost many, many things at the lake. I'll leave it at that. Micheal, you scared to take the trash out in broad daylight? My neighbors wouldn't know what to do if they saw me with pants on before 8 am.
