A few post-practice notes, 8/9
Hey everyone. Practice has ended. Here's what we learned.
- K Wes Byrum said he's No. 1 on the depth chart. I doubt anyone here is surprised.
- Byrum said he's made a mechanical adjustment (not swinging his arm across his body so violently) that has helped him improve accuracy and distance.
- Byrum, based on a suggestion from former K John Vaughn, kicked at Arena League uprights this summer. They are more narrow that standard uprights. Byrum feels like that helped him significantly as well.
- OL Aubrey Phillips, who missed practice yesterday with an unspecified medical problem, returned on Sunday. He participated in some drills.
- Auburn didn't go in full pads today, though it was welcome to do so. Gene Chizik said his team's lack of depth is prompting him to change plans.
- Auburn will hold its first two-a-day on Monday. "At least one of those will be in pads," Chizik said.
- WR Montez Billings said he missed spring ball because of "academic issues or whatever." The plot thickened when Billings said he graduated in May, "so everything will be alright." Then Billings said the issue is still ongoing ... even though he has completed his undergraduate coursework. ``I'm not sure exactly."
- If that made no sense to you, join the club. Just not in the tub.

QB on a string or puppet?
Where have all the players gone long time hoping.
They fall away if you don't pay attention!
Thanks for the update Jay. Your work is appreciated.
As Troop says -- sort of -- "One would find it extremely difficult, yea, impossible, to be participate actively on the varsity football team at Auburn University if one spends an extraordinary amount of time in the rehabilitation tanks."
I also do not understand the academic issue thing. He graduated, but according to an article elsewhere, he may be able to play at the start of the season. Why doesn't someone sit down and handle this matter ASAP?
Hey Jay, have you seen inside the Village yet? It's insanely nice. Drop by Eagle Hall some time ;)
Is that an invitation, Matt?
I don't think Auburn is cool with 37-year-old guys rolling around The Village unattended ...
WTC ...
My guess is that they don't want it handled ... yet.
I'm kind of a big deal in Eagle Hall...
The late-30s-guy-prowling-the-dorms thing won't happen until next month, when James in Bham" switches to "James in Auburn"
On defense I think we would be okay depth wise if it weren't for the linebackers. Somewhere we need to find about 3 more linebackers. The problem is that they can't really come from the safeties or the defensive ends. We aren't terribly deep at either of those positions. The only place that would make sense for a player to switch positions would be if a running back were to become a linebackers.
D is back ... and ripping James!
I'm happy.
Chizik said he will not move a player from another position to linebacker.
Sen'derrick Marks just received about two minutes of praise by Collinsworth and crew for anyone not watching the preseason game.
Jay, then I really don't see how this defense is going to hold up at linebacker. There seem to be about 4 we would be happy playing with at the 3 positions. I would like to see about 7 or 8. That is a bug difference.
Guys, don't worry about it.
Michael says "Don't worry."
I listen to Michael. I'm not worried.
Alex Mortensen, the son of ESPN's Chris Mortensen, whom Auburn recruited until he signed with Arkansas and later transferred to Samford, just threw a pick six in the Hall of Fame Game.
Worries is a strong word for it, but I am concerned about injuries depleting the ranks and a clear lack of talent at some positions.
Guys, don't be concerned about it.
Michael, are you saying it's all pointless anyway, season is over before it starts, we are done stick a fork in us?
Eddie,
Earlier you said you set next to Duval's family in 2000 and 2001, my season tickets were next to his grandparents from 01-04, he would sit up there with them sometimes after his career was done.
It wasn't until after he graduated that I realized that was some of his family. I can only imagine the things they probably heard me say in disgust about him over the time I sat near them.
You didn't happen to have tickets around section 40 did you?
I am becoming concerned about this season, although I can't quite put my finger on why.
Michael, I think HH is asking you a metaphysical question.
i earlier reported SenDerrick Marks was #72 for the Titans. i wanted to issue a retraction. that dang internet got me this time. he was pictured in a #72 jersey, though. he is still #94. yippee.
I loved the Olivia Newton-John song "Let's Get Metaphysical."
Lack of depth causing limited hitting is a no win situation for a coach.
Hit like is needed to compete in the SEC, risk injuries and further loss of depth OR limit hitting like Mark Richt did last year and risk playing soft during the season.
Of course "knowledgeble" fans will throw out blame if either way doesn't work.
OK Hoopie if you start again with the "knowledgeable fan" stuff again this year I'm going to cry.
Monica ...
Get off Hoopie's back ... he worked hard in the off season and reported for camp in midseason shape. We need all of us in midseason shape.
His slap at fans notwithstanding, the premise of his point is correct.
i guess you told me
Mon....I'll try to curb the comments.....it ain't easy.
Hoopie, that is probably what is bothering me, or it could just be Eddins in a Batman t-shirt. It is definitely one of the two.
I like True Blood a lot, but I can't get over the feeling that Bill is doing a bad Elvis impersonation.
JET-Why would they not want to handle it just yet?
And how did the move go?
I am home now.
I will be returning to the Plains tomorrow morning.
Piece until then ...
Goodnight Jay. Excellent work.
mornin all
Thanks, JG, for your efforts.
Any news on that walk-on OL from Utah, Jorrell Bostrom?
Morning DL.

I forgot to open the floor to shout-outs. The floor is now open:
A special shout-out to #26 Matt Hawkins, two-time ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN!!!
Today's honoree never suited up in an Auburn football uniform, but he is a charter member of the Auburn Football Lettermen's Club. I consider him more than worthy of Kickoff Kountdown recognition, but wasn't sure exactly where to place him. I decided to go with the year he was born, 1926. You just can't find a person nicer than this gentleman.
T-minus 26 days til kickoff!!!
HAPPY KENNY HOWARD DAY!!!
NOTE: The following information has been copied directly from the Kenny Howard Athletic Training Fellowship web site.
Kenny Howard was born on July 28, 1926 in Crossville, Alabama. He came to Alabama Polytechnic Institute to study Agriculture, but got a job as student athletic trainer under the legendary trainer and track coach Wilbur Hutsell. Upon graduation in 1948, Howard was named Head Athletic Trainer and served in that capacity until 1976.
From 1976 through 1980 Kenny served Auburn as its first assistant athletics director for Olympic Sports. He retired from Auburn in 1980 and went to work as Director of Sports Relations for the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation, Inc., and served in that position until his retirement in 1995.
While serving as Auburn's head trainer, Kenny became the confidant of head football coach Ralph Jordan. That friendship led to the 40-year association with Dr. Jack Hughston becoming Auburn's Orthopedic surgeon and team physician. Kenny was the trainer for the U.S. Olympic Track team at Helsinki in 1952 and the trainer for the U.S. Olympic Swim team at Montreal in 1976. He also served as head trainer for the World University Games on two occasions. He was the trainer for the Blue-Gray game for ten consecutive years and the trainer for the Senior Bowl for two years.
Kenny was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. He is the first athletic trainer to receive such an honor.
Kenny is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame, the Alabama Trainers Association Hall of Fame, the Hughston Society, the Auburn A-Club and [charter member of the] Auburn Lettermen Club, and the City of Auburn Tiger Trail. He served the City of Auburn as a member of the City Council from 1984 through 1987. He is married to the former Jeanne Barnhart and they have three sons and daughter. Jeanne and Kenny continue to reside in Auburn.

WARRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
DL up awful early today. Must be checking his Costco inventory ;-)
Good afternoon, Aero and a big War Eagle to you both.
Luv - how was the golf game?
a never ending bowl of information THT...
Hey Areo..great question about Jorrell Bostrom.... any help on this subject JGT?
Thanks DL, and you are a never-ending thorn in the side to Washington! Keep up the good work.
I live under a rock. I don't even remember hearing about Bostrom.
Morning Hotties!! I cant believe that Im up this early. Guess I'm a bit excited for the 1st day of school. My youngun starts 7th grade today! I am going to start the day off right and workout or maybe even run. Check me out Norm, I'm back in the game! lol
Some stats from yesterdays game. Sen'Derrick Marks had two tackles including one sack for the Titans. Spencer Johnson had one tackle for the Bills. Rob Bironas did not attempt a field goal and was 3/3 on extra points.
Jorrell Bostrom is #76
He got married in May
THT it is just simply amazing how many great Auburn men (and women) there are associated with our program that I have never heard of. Nice pick for #26 and I cant believe its that close!
Thanks AUBigCat. My dad introduced me to Kenny Howard when I was a little kid. There's just not a nicer Auburn man. When I broke a finger my freshman year, I headed straight to his office and he fixed me right up.
Wow. Bostrom is in for a walk-on redshirt season, then has 2 yrs of eligibility if he earns a scholarship after this season. That would make him about my age when he finishes college. Ok, not that old, but near 28!!! After graduating H.S. in 2002 he spent time on his LDS mission, then went to Juco.
In case y'all haven't figured it out yet, I'm on vacation today. Since I can't afford to go anywhere, I'm littering HABOTN with an endless string of posts.
I'll take a break and go get the 50+ empty DC twelve pack cartons from the basement to the curb for recycling.
Happy Lamel Ages day everyone!
Honorable mention to Marlon Taylor & Steve Gandy.
THT..I would've never known many of these factoids if it weren't for your enlightening tidbits of information. Merci Beaucoup.
Jorrell spent a lot of time on the LDS mission. We had to bring some mormons in our team after seeing them mercilessly slaughter the evil sabanites.
I don't even go to the epic display of incompetence that is the auburntigers.com website. Ever since the AD hired the nincompoops of cstv, the site has turned into ... I think I flushed that word down the toilet earlier.
Take a look at the football page on Auburntigers.com website. Enjoy the countdown of NaN days, NaN hours and NaN minutes.
Auburn's official football site
Donate the empty cans to the pink ribbon or some other charity.
THT- Way to bring it today. The only thing disappointing when the season starts will be the end of your countdown.
RK- I did not sit in section 40, but my brother got tickets to the games while he was a manager and it just happened that I ended up sitting next to Duval's family quite often in the player's family section.
Hey we have been neighbors and I did not even know… I have been a section 41 guy for over 15 years…
wtc- i'm hearing that the players are really buying into this new staff and what they are doing. The offense players seem really excited with the new offense and the defensive players seem to believe that this defense will be alot more exciting than last year's defense and that they fill they can be more agressive. I don't quite have the sources I used to have, but that seems to be a consistant belief on the way the team feels about things right now.
As for last thread, somebody shoot me. I can't believe I said Slaughter, I meant Stallworth. Anyways, nice error on my part.
Good Morning, Hotties. Happy (UGH) Monday.
TarHeel, not too good, as usual. We played somewhere new, so that made it even worse. Oh well. It was a nice course and very pretty. Even though my golf sucks, I can always enjoy the scenery!
DL, we're neighbors too. This season will be our 4th year in Sec. 41.
What is happening Hotties? Me? I'm enjoying my time at A02 in beautiful ATL airport witing to get to LAX. I haven't checked in since Friday evening but I hope that your hate has not waned in my absence.
Keep Hate Alive.
WTC ...
WE just packed Saturday ... move is Thursday.
To answer your question: Don't know, but maybe it's keeping Montez' feet to the fire.
Most of females are already over there. At least those that are going through rush.
I think I am going to lay low this week and let my two females have control of everything so as to not get in the way of all that estrogen in the air.
(Like I ever had control anyway)
Norm-Saturday was awful. i hope your run was more productive than mine. After 5 1/2 miles I gave up. The humidity was killing me.
Ran 12 yesterday on the treadmill (just shoot me now). What a boring time that was.
Norm - my hate for that school never wanes; it is in eternal waxing mode. And I don't mean it's too hairy.
wow, sounds like Section 41 is for VIPs.
another shout out, this one for #26 Teapot Brown!
WTC- I wouldn't have mentioned that the humidity was killing you, especially with your avatar :)!!!!
But then again, I had to settle for the elyptical machine this Saturday in place of my run do to timing.
I jumped rope for 2 minutes two days ago. Does that count? (Found it on a shelf in the basement). I was sooooo winded afterwards.
THT- LOL, beats a hula hoop and the same statement :)
I'm going outside to push a blocking sled for about an hour, just like those big AU linemen. Blocking sled=lawnmower
TarHeel, I did that on Saturday. Stay hydrated!
What up Hotties?! I officially watched my other favorite football team get started on their 2009 season (even though it didn't count). It gave me chills waiting to watch a game kickoff!
Tucker slept in till 6:30 this morning so i didn't have to run. yippee for me!
HAPPY KENNY HOWARD DAY. enjoy your vacation THT. :)
I'm at home today. I think my puppy is wondering why she's not at doggie day care with her four legged friends.
Trying to figure out my fall schedule is no fun. Between wedding prep, bachelor party, work, and working around a certain other SEC school's schedule, I can't figure out what games I'm coming to. So far, it's just WVU and the Iron Bowl. That's no bueno.
LuvAU1968
I cannot wait to see my tickets this year.
I have been seat 25 (end of row) and I think row 43 for the longest time... i reduced my tickets to 2 this year do to a crappy home sch.
I am hoping, after 25 years of TUF, they do not put me in the center...
Aero, just checked Auburntigers.com, and the countdown clock is working fine. User error?
Yeah, it's a pain being in the middle of the row. Hence, I usually don't get up! I wish we were up that high. We're in Row 13, so we have a little trouble seeing when they're on the opposite end of the field. But, we like the people that sit around us, so we keep our seats.
We love our seats! We've been in section 15, rows 61 & 62 (very top) at the end of the row for 26 years. We love it. Now that I have gotten used to watching the game from the end of the field, I don't like sitting on the sidelines. I like being able to see the whole field and it seems like you can see the play open up better. We are in the shade, our kids grew up with the people around us. Only drawback is we can't see the new scoreboard. Keep hoping they are going to add one at the other end.
I think I'm going to be sick. There was a roach in my biscuit this morning. I'm never eating at Hardee's again!
This is not how I wanted my Monday to start off.
Dear Leader,
I had section 40, row 43 seats 22 & 23 for 6 years.
So I was a section over in almost the same seats.
You're lucky, cincy. We're in the boiling sun most of the day. It's awful.
OMG, D. Miller! That is disgusting!! I'm never eating at Hardee's either!
BTW, have you played at Bent Brook yet? We played there yesterday and it's really nice. A bit pricy, though.
I was worried about my last post....
I was waiting for the reply that went something like this..
"DL your that SOn of a *&^%$ that *&^% last year...."
=0)
I'm still gonna eat at Hardee's on the rare occasion that I pass one during breakfast hours.
I'm sure this has been discussed, but, JayG, how do you do you feel about this?
New Rules
Luv, good link, I had no idea any of that was happening. I'm willing to bet it will not happen as the SEC wants it to. Seems like too many antitrust issues.
Luv,
I haven't played BentBrook yet. I have heard it is nice.
I haven't played in about a month. I want to get out and play Timberline again soon.
