BLOGGIN FOR YOUR NOGGIN: Gene Chizik speaks
Hey everyone. Auburn head coach Gene Chizik is discussing the Tigers at his weekly press conference.
Photo credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn University
- ``It's going to be a fun week for us, an exciting week for us."
- ``This is a vert good Tennessee football team and we all know how tough it is to play at Tennessee."
- On this being new: ``I don't think there's anyone on the football team who has played at Tennessee. We're not going to change anything. We're not going to change how we prepare. There's really not much that you do to change what you've done the previous four games. We feel like communication will be the issue -- whether its hand signals. Our guys are used to that. It'll be fun for them."
- On Eric Berry: ``You're always cognizant of where he is. He can take a guy out of the game. You've got to make provisions for that. We'll always know where he is. He's that good of a player. He can dominate a game."
- On Trooper Taylor (former UT assistant): ``He coaches them really, really well. I've known Trooper for a long time. I knew what kind of a person he was. He's been great for our football team. He's been great for our receivers. He's done a great job and he's a great person."
- On him getting up for Tennessee: "You get to the level where you can't crank it up anymore. I don't know if he can get more excited."
- He has a lot of respect for UT defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. "He brings a lot to the table."
- On the possibility of changing things with the punt-return unit: ``We're open-minded with some thoughts of different guys. But we have to keep working the guys we've invested so much time in. We can't kick those guys to the curb and make wholesale changes."
- On getting national relevance: ``We've got to win. The other stuff, it'll take care of itself."
- On if he's getting more terse in special teams meetings: "We're coaching like we always coach. We're very demanding and precise. We've got to play better and coach better."
- On similarities of how Auburn and Tennessee are built from a staff standpoint: ``Guys make a lot of money to be good coaches, to be good recruiters and treat these kids right. That's our deal. The guys I've got here, I want them to coach my 9-year-old son. They've got to contribute with the xs and os. When you make the whole cake and you leave out one ingredient, it doesn't taste very good."
- On Monte Kiffin: (Chizik spoke with Kiffin during his days at UCF ... prior to being Auburn DC in 2002) ``Monte was very good to me. He was very kind, very good with me."
- ``We've had kind of a whole different bunch of scenarios we've been through and we're 4-0. That's against some good teams. We're still feeling each other out, still learning them. There's still a lot of things we'll have to get through together. I'm proud of the way they've continued to play -- even when it wasn't good."
- On Chris Todd: ``We felt like, with what we saw and knowing he didn't go through spring practce, Chris could be a very good player in this offense. He's done some things that we expected him to do. When you look at the touchdown passes and all that -- there was a lot of work done by a lot of guys. Some of them were two-yard passes. You still have to make the throw. The thing I like about Chris is that he hasn't made a lot of bad decisions."
- On Burns and McCalebb: ``We don't know where they're at right now. It's day by day."
- On what a win at UT would mean: ``Going to Tennessee, to play there, will be a huge indicator of what we are. That's not just for this week -- that's for the whole year. It's going to be an adventure. If you do well and win the game, it gets you over a hurdle. If you can go to a place like Tennessee and you can get a win there, it reveals more about your team. It would catapult us into October in a good way."
- He said Byron Isom is practicing.
- THAT'S A WRAP.

We don't care about how we're ranked because we don't expect to contend for anything. We seem to forget the wailing and gnashing of teeth over our ranking in the early season of '06, when we expected it to matter at the end of the season.
I couldn't care less about Iowa and maybe it's just me, but dismissing them as a Big Televen also-ran, asking about the last time they wend to a Rose Bowl (which is less relevant in the BCS era), and telling them that they're likely to choke during the season "like they always do" just reeks of rank hypocrisy.
It's been awhile, but I can still bring it.
HABOTN!!!!....protect this house.
Just stopped by to say thanks to the Hotties for the laffs.
Seems that the Iowa Cornpone enjoys getting the cornpone stuffed.
251, don't be a buzzkill. That was 3 seasons ago and we got to No. 2 and lost. Thanks for bringing it back up.
In other news, would someone plese tell CGC that there is no PRESEASON in college football!
I heard that spew from his mouth on Sunday and thought I was watching a rerun.
You get a line, and I'll get poll, honey.
You get a line, and I'll get a poll, babe.
You get a line, and I'll get a poll, and we'll go fishin' at the crawdad hole.
Honey, baby, mine!
Could the stock price increase be correlated to more website hits from the Big10 conference?
Now that's funny :D
We talked with two players during the "interview window" today ... and both (Berry and McFadden) were up on Sunday.
So I have nothing new to report, though Walt said Gulley and Demond Washington are the top two guys at punt return right now.
OK. Almost nothing to report.
ballin'....I highly doubt that CGC "spewed". He is the master of redundant coachspeak, which does not include spewing.
The coachspeak haters should love the fact that he used a term like "preseason". At least it is not normal coachspeak...although I'm sure that it was presented in a predictable monotone voice.
Muff and Fumble?
Orville Redenbacher-Z is the only one around here who spews, at least that I am aware of.
So, Gulley did fumble, but he didn't muff. Serious no call there. I can't say I'm not surprised, that's a pretty obscure rule.
Now as for Gulley's fumble...
Kevin Scarbinsky on local Knoxville radio right now. just thought i'd throw that out there.
Jet - that just reminded me of an exchange during our graduation trip which involved one of the "chaperones".
What's the Scab sayin?
I am sure the room would be filled with denials should you testify to such events today.
Demond Washington!
I would've like seeing Harry Adams or PPL in that role too.
Or Jamar Travis for that matter.
says he's somewhat suprised UT is the favorite, but attributes that to AU not having been on the road yet.
basically detailing the depleted depth issues we all know about.
PPL is french for fanboys.
JAMAR TRAVIS FOR PUNT RETURNER!
ok, that's one vote. who got next?
Gimme a hands guy back there ... forget the returns ... someone to catch the ball.
Wisner? Winter? Lutzenkirchen? Zachery? Somebody? Anybody? Everybody?
how about we just try to block every punt? then we won't have to worry about returning any.
If he can catch put Byron Isom back as the punt returner.
Just don't turn the ball over. That would be progress...we can talk about yards after the catch once we get the catch thing down.
My trip to Knoxville looks in doubt this weekend...the AC went on on my car on the way home from work today.
RK, dude. you don't need no stinkin' AC. i went for 2 years without it. come on.
NO DROPS!
The only drop I forsee in my future is dropping $ to get the thing fixed.
I believe blocking for catcher/returner is as big a problem.
I think its a ploy to make others think we are easy. Coach Boulevard (hereafter referred to as Blvd) will unleash our ST playbook at appropriate time.
In any case I don't think the fans should ask blvd to hit the rd.
well, if it's your only drop RK maybe that can slide. you'll have to catch 4 TD's in your next game, though.
Right now I'm at 50/50 on if I'm going this weekend or not. My wife really doesn't want to go, despite being a UT grad she hates games in Knoxville...then the AC decides to crap out.
i actually got my AC fixed in time to take my car to the LA Tech game. i feel like i have a new car. you just can't stop the Saturn!
I like the idea of just sticking with one punt returner and letting him work on it. Let Gulley be the guy for now. Demond is probably second. Unless they repeatedly screw up, stay with them.
As I say, the punt returner is getting all the focus, but our kicking game in general (other than Wes Byrum) still hasn't been bad. It is stuck somewhere between pathetic and horrible. Hopefully we can be bad with some practice.
Coosa, I've found your man. He's Pete Fiutak of Collegefootballnews.com
Sayeth Pete ...
"Assuming it's Florida, Alabama, and Texas as the unquestioned top three, in some order, No. 4 is probably Virginia Tech, Auburn has a say in the matter, and Houston probably deserves it.
"There's one thing I do know; LSU is as soft a No. 4 in the current Coaches' Poll as they come. The struggling Tiger team is that high on name recognition alone, and anyone who saw the down-to-the-wire win over Mississippi State and also watched Auburn's dismantling of the Bulldogs, with 390 rushing yards and five touchdowns, knows who the better team is. The Auburn 41-30 win over West Virginia isn't getting enough credit, either.
"And no, Boise State isn't the fourth best team in America. It's good, really good, but the home win over a flaky Oregon team isn't enough. It's not like beating Oklahoma State in Stillwater and following it up with a win over a pumped up and focused Texas Tech. Houston has the two best wins of any team in America (outside of my No. 4 team) and cranked out the nation's No. 2 offense while doing it. If Texas did what the Cougars did, many would be shifting their No. 1 votes from Florida.
For now, I'm putting Virginia Tech as my four. Nebraska is good, and the Hokies found a way to win with a tough defensive day to clamp off solid Husker drives, and then came the Miami dismantling. The Canes had looked like a possible top five team and it was undressed and spanked by the Virginia Tech lines, running game, and pass rush. Beating Nebraska and Miami earns Tech the spot just on the outside looking in, but give it two weeks. The trip to Georgia Tech could change that up in a hurry."
Jet- for some reason CFN loves Auburn. I read Fiutak and those guys for a while now. Not complaining just saying
Personally, I think there is a good reason I am not an AP voter. My off sense of humor would require me to rank Iowa State ahead of Iowa.
Congrats to Paul Rhoads, by the way. Iowa State is now at 3-1. Blow hurricanes!!! Or is that suck? I still ain't sure, but I do like Rhoads.
Apparently UT losing Nick Reviez is even bigger than anticipated. Most people seem to think he, not Berry was the leader of the D.
Berry is by far the most talented, but apparently Reviez was the heart of that D.
RK, what are they saying on Sportalk today?
The Chiz has no comment about Iowa or their ranking.
- The Chiz
They think the line with UT -2 is crazy and that this is a must win for UT to get a bowl bid.
Dave Hooker from GoVolsExtra called to talk about the game and he didn't seem very confident at all.
Interesting. The line seems a bit odd to me as well, but I like it for our team; maybe they'll have a chip on their shoulder. Shows nobody respects what we've done so far. Hopefully that changes on Saturday.
long day in the federal pen today. But it was a good day; I didn't have to see Bammer Bernie.
Scottie B - I commend you for even noticing the lack of a Beasley post.
So, are Michael and Jet having a contest to see who can have the longest post today?
Doc just picked Auburn + the points.
Nick Reviez's backup is also injured. They are looking for a freshman or possibly a backup weak side linebacker to step up.
As for a must win game, if I were a UT fan, I would certain say this is it. After this week they play georgia and alabama if I remember correctly. Those are likely two losses. Follow that up with a South Carolina game which they could lose and they could be staring at a 4 game losing streak and a tough road to being bowl elligible.
JayGT - speaking of Demond... when you're in the press box, please yell over to the TV booth, "QUIT CALLING HIM DESMOND!"
Throw in a comment wabout Weezener too please.
If we get Lache Seastrunk, the TV guys are really going to have trouble (not to mention Nosa Hard-to-say).
Just dropped in to tell you, I asked a buddy of mine who is an official with Conference USA. He confirmed what Cincy (I believe it was Cincy) already said, the call was blown on the fumbled punt.
Well glad that controversy is over.
I just thought it was very coincidental that I had just seen that in the Titans game and then it happened in our game. If I hadn't just seen it happen, I wouldn't have even questioned it.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Same here.
I've been watching football since I was a kid and never seen it called until the Titans game a couple of weeks back.
However, it's just one of those things that unless they are told in the off season to look for it (Like they did with illegal formations a couple of years back) the refs aren't going to call it.
Do we have any hotties in the St. Augustine area?
The call doesn't bother me that much, because if our guys could catch a punt, then the rule would never apply.
I got married in St. Augustine, and usually vacation there once a year, but not from there.
The call doesn't bother me that much either, it shouldn't be an issue, we should just catch the punts. It didn't cost us in the long run.
I'm going to be in St. Augustine this weekend, just wondered if there was a local bar or restaurant that typically showed Auburn games and maybe had a few fans there.
I wouldn't know on that, but I'm sure there is.
I'm usually down there in the spring.
Since it is UT week..and since I hate UT...
Hopefully I can bring you some good luck and some good hate while I am at it..
During UT week I generally listen to this crap so much during the week that I am ready to tackle the dog by gametime..
So win or lose...listen to this and get nauseated..
Rocky Top
I refuse to click on that.
Rocky Top actually reminds me of good times. The night before one of the Tenn games at Legion field (76?) my roommate and I and some friends went to a bar in Homewood to hear a Bluegrass/country/rock band called Three on a String. The crowd was evenly spit between between AU and UT. The band played both Rocky Top and War Eagle and EVERYONE sang BOTH songs at the top of their lungs.
A great crowd and a great time. No hat'n, just fun.
PPL FOR PUNT RETURNS!!
I would like to see PPL get a shot at punt returns, but sticking with Gulley is probably best. Just let the guy get comfortable. If he keeps fumbling, we get an added benefit. Just like a sack is now technically referred to as a Brodie, a fumbled punt can be referred to as a Gulley. We just need to give him enough opportunities to earn the honor.
I was doing a little research on the UT stats. More than half of their offensive points and about 40% of their yards came against Western Kentucky. Similarly, their high defensive ranking is due to holding WKU to 83 yards total.
While I do think this will be a tough game, I'll reiterate my prediction of AU 31, UT 20.
There's something to be said for giving one guy who should be capable a chance to get comfortable receiving punts.
I'd feel better if that were our only problem on special teams.
I am with you Nova. We has plenty of issues to go around.
"Preseason" seems like an adequate description to me. Except for MSU, these were essentially exhibition games and don't really matter. October matters, a lot.
Please join me tonight on the Auburn Football Insider Podcast from 8-9CST.
AFIP 9/29
there are 7 more preseason games for Auburn from my hate-filled perspective.
Jet, glad you found Pete's words of wisdom. He is no doubt a very smart man who doesn't mind taking a contrarian position when it is truth, even though he knows the world will ridicule him. We need more folks like that.
I hope he eventually gets the recognition he deserves, like the guy that voted bammer #1 the whole season back in 92. And I hope Pat Dye eventually is willing to eat his broiled crow. And I hope I don't vomit a bunch of orange koolaid Sat nite.
Eddie, you doing the show by yourself?
Coosa- E Bro's is joining me along with Sensi. He is on probation and will only be joining us for a few minutes tonight :)
You taking calls tonight?
Absolutely Coosa, you can join the show by calling 646-649-1890.
Sensi needs to drink his koolaid.
And get on the Gus Bus.
For Jet,
Whatcha gonna do when the well runs dry, honey?
Whatcha gonna do when the well runs dry, babe?
Whatcha gonna do when the well runs dry, sit in the shade and cry, cry, cry...Honey, baby, mine.
New thread UPZ.
Eduardo/Sensi
Talk about the special teams!
That's the relevant part of the Ball State.
I'm back.....
For the record (of which there doesn't seem to be much of since my comments kept getting deleted), I wasn't angry that you ranked Iowa 22nd. I was just looking for an explanation as to why you would rank a team 11 positions behind another after the former team beat the latter on the latter's home field.
It would be pretty easy for commenters to "beat down" another commenter whose inputs kept getting deleted.
It is also pretty obvious that the blogger / "journalist" in this case wanted to avoid the topic.
Jay, your ranking is indefensible. I assume this is why you don't defend it.
In case you think Iowa doesn't play quality football befitting the SEC standard (no doubt another motivation for the pathetically low ranking Jay bestowed on it), let's look at recent history.
Iowa played an SEC team in a bowl game in '03 (UF), '04 (LSU), '05 (UF) and '08 (SC). We won all but the '05 Florida game, and there we got cheated out of a recovered onside kick at the end of the game. 'Giggle' at that Harrison. Don't make me bring up such trivial things as conference academic rankings. That's a comparison that doesn't favor the SEC. Remember, Universities are for educating people, not just for producing a football team and handing out bogus degrees (Auburn got in trouble for that recently, didn't they?)
WAR hiring a coach with a .200 winning percentage.
