First Post: Thursday of Week Four

Hey everyone. Looks like more rain is on its way to central Alabama, which means the Tigers could be looking at another wet weekend. So it goes.

I was just watching a replay of the Ball State @ Army game from last week. The winless Cardinals didn't look all that bad to me, but I suppose you have to consider the level of competition. Maybe my 95-7 prediction for this weekend's game is a bit off.

Just joshin'. My real pick is Auburn 63, Ball State 10.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

Georgia has agreed to continue playing Florida in Jacksonville every year through 2016. The contract was to expire after 2010.

I may just be remembering the AU experience in Birmingham, but why would UGA continue to play what is essentially a home game for UF every year? I remember the argument(from the Bammers)that the AU/UA game would lose its luster if it was moved to a home and home. Anyone feel that way today?

Ball State-Army was televised on CBS College Sports.

Yes, too many games are televised these days.

NEVER TOO MANY GAMES... just not enough space on TIVO...

8:45 AM

AUfan - one argument Auburn had was that Alabama sometimes played other regular season games at Legion Field. To my knowledge, the game in Jacksonville is the only one either Florida or Georgia plays there each year.

i didn't know CBS had their own college thing. hmmm. i need to see if i get that.

Blogger IV said...

Michael,

At one time, Auburn played other games at Legion Field. In fact there have been several doubleheaders at Legion Field involving AU and UA. I went to a couple of them. Coach Jordan just believed that AU should play all home games on campus. He did not live to see the UA play in Auburn.

8:54 AM
Blogger IV said...

These night games would have driven Coach Jordan nuts also. He felt that all home games should be played in the afternoon so the grads had plenty of time to travel to and from the games. Of course, this was before the Interstate Highway System was completed and there wasn't that many games being televised.

The worlds largest outdoor coctail party is fun. It's really cool seeing a stadium split 50/50. I'm a fan of that concept. I'd love to get to TX/OK to check that out, too.

I'm not sure it's a home game. Florida travels 2 hours. UGA travels 5.5. Is that equal? No. Is it the Iron Bowl in Bammerham? Not even close.

Put me in the camp that says this game will be much, much closer than most are predicting.

Coming off an emotional win against a pretty fair WVU, looking towards our first road game in front of the largest crowd most of our team will EVER see in their lives (much less play in), facing a team that finished 12-0 regular season last year, and with us still having considerable depth issues - I just don't see us running over them no matter how badly they've looked thus far in '09.

It's my hope that we are able to get a comfortable lead in the first half, then rest the starters for most of the second. That won't translate into a 50+ point victory (might not even cover the spread).

Unlike JGT I haven't seen the Ballers play this year. Still, they've got a lot of guys who know what winning feels like, which always concerns me. Right now I'm guessing 48-20, with them picking up some late points on our 2nd team D. But if we make some bad mistakes early it could actually be a ballgame.

9:26 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Freep- They lost a majority of that team for last season. Any team that loses to New Hampshire has serious issues. IF you look closer at Ball State, they should struggle big time. I really don't see this a ballgame in any way and if they score 20, I would be shocked. I'm not saying that it can't happen, but if it does, then Auburn has some issues.

9:30 AM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

What can I say - 40+ years of following AU football has made me a cockeyed pessimist.

I think we DO have some issues beyond our 1st string on defense, and I think Parrish is good enough a coach to find ways to exploit them. Of course by the time we have the backups in I hope we have a huge lead, but if MSU can hang 17 points and 300 yards on our first unit, I think these guys will have a shot at putting up similar numbers in the latter stages when (hopefully) our best guys are resting up for UTee.

9:37 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

You may be right about that Freep, putting up points against the backups. As for Mississippi State, I think they too are much improved from last year. They probably won't win as many games, but their offense is much better than what it was. Beating Vandy last week was a big win since Vandy returned 19 starters to this year's squad that went to a bowl game last season.

Since I said late yesterday that I hoped to ratchet up my goofing off percentage today to 99.999%, if I do something which is "personally" productive but absolutely non-work related, does that count? I need a ruling before I venture down that path. Really, I'm just here filling a chair today at this customer site, I have no intentions of doing anything work related and I believe it's expected.

So, your opinions on the goof off question are appreciated.

I'm not for moving it; I'm just asking the question. Here's the response I got for a Bama fan about it.

AU insecurity destroyed something very special. It always was a power struggle to show that AU was "equal" to Alabama -- by forcing Alabama to come to Auburn that showed AU was not "little brother" anymore. The 80's showed that the Iron Bowl (named by Shug Jordan) was a neutral site game. The argument that it was unfair because Alabama continued to play a few games there (AU could have done the same) or that it was somewhat closer to Tuscaloosa (did the game have to be played in Clanton?) don't really hold water. It was about AU flexing its muscles. In my book, that is insecurity and that insecurity destroyed something very special.

12:22 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

May have told this one before, but when I was living in Nashville, I worked with Steve Spurrier's nephew. He was always talking about how he played QB in HS and for one year at the Citadel. It was hard for me to think of him as any type of athlete, as he was the slow-moving, pot-bellied type. One day he asked me if I wanted to throw the football out on the loading dock. He was probably 35 -40 yards away from me and was throwing spirals to me on a rope that were still whistling when they hit my hands (which they did every time). I guess there is something in the Spurrier genes. 10 years later, I still remember how much my hands were hurting. Did I mention it was winter?

12:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I love that the Iron Bowl is playing in Auburn. Should Bama want to move their home game to Birmingham, that would be up to them.

There was something attractive about the 50/50 ticket split, but Birmingham always felt like an Alabama home game. They use to play more than one game at Legion Field and we didn't, not to mention that Legion Field was artificial turf, while Jordan Hare is grass.

Nope, we need to kick them in the grass.

12:23 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sensi, first you pick against Auburn and now you are talking about moving the Iron Bowl back to Birmingham. Could this be some subconscious suicide attempt.

Okay, who's bringing the rope?

12:24 PM
Blogger IV said...

I doubt many Bammers would want to move the Iron Bowl back now, especailly since their stadium now seats well more than any dome might seat. Legion Field now seats less than it did when the last Iron Bowl was played there. They had to remove the upper deck on the east side due to deterioration.

12:25 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again, I didn't say we should move it, I just asked what you all thought.

12:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Crap, now what am I going to do with this bucket of tar?

12:26 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

No, it was Bama trying to flex its muscle to try to keep the game in Birmingham and call it neutral ground.

Even when the tickets were split 50/50 as they say, it never seemed to be that way.

They are still bitter 20 years later that they lost their "neutral site" game. Too bad.

Ask Georgia fans how they like not having the UF/UGA game on campus.

12:26 PM

Don't have that one, Eddie, but my mom says I can get it if I pay for half of it with my allowance and Kool-Aid stand money. By the way, if we're playing Missile Command and you get blown up, don't scream. My mom will make you go home.

Eddie's thrown more and he crossed the line a couple of years ago when he threw down one of MY controllers after I destroyed him in FIFA, a game I had been playing for months on end and one he had played for the first time that night. Real mature bro.

Yeah, I've worried about our Wii controllers several times with my son. I have to go make him cool down on a pretty regular basis when he's playing Wii. My daughter is not nearly as bad about getting bent out of shape, but she will coldly kick your @$$ at several Wii games. She's particularly good at the shooting games for some reason. I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

12:54 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Yeah, I almost thought about purchasing the new NCAA earlier this year, but I just don't like spending 45 minutes playing one game. I can play 3-4 games of FIFA in that time. Plus, I got tired of playing everyone and the score always end up being 66-63 or something. Everybody went for it on fourth down and it literally came down to who had the ball last. Defense was impossible on that game in multi-player mode.

Big Red isn't that cool RK. i was almost called into emergency action at WKU a few years back b/c the student who portrays Big Red was absent for a basketball game (i can't remember why). i really didn't want to do it at the time but looking back it would've been cool to do once. a student with previous Big Red experience came in to save the day.

seriously, they almost threw me out there in that red mess.

On the Iron bowl in B'ham.
1. In the 50's amd ear;y 60's we played Ga Tech, Tenn, Miss State & Ala in B'ham. So it wasn't Ala only playing games there.
2. The myth that the stadium was split 50/50 is just that a myth. Ala and Auburn allotted tickets were split 50/50 AFTER the B'ham merchants got there large alotment.
Guess who had more Merchants fans in B'ham If you guessed the University of Alabama. Here's you're Gold Star.

Tell the bammer that we don't like Legion Field. Simple. We don't have to convince anyone with reasoning, specially a bammer.

He should convince his AD to alternate it between JHS and Legion instead of JHS and JHSWest. No problemo.

I just read this from an AU student: "I'm eating lunch minding my own business, and I hear this loud voice down the hall. I turn the corner to see what all the fuss is about, and Trooper and Luper are in the main lunch area giving a speech to all of the students. Basically Trooper thanked all of the students for staying through the rain last Saturday and encouraged everyone to get loud. He emphasized family and said he's been to many universities but they were nothing like Auburn. They gave out DWWD wristbands to all of the students..."

Don't know if this is true or not, but thought I would pass it on. Sounds like something they would do though. They are GREAT for AU!

So how can a guy who hasn't practiced in spring / fall just drop into the new system and get to work?

Wouldn't he be seriously lagging behind, specially in terms of pace and stamina? Would such a guy cause more harm than good to the system?

Those questions and more will be answered, when PPL plays his first snap.

And there's a little line at the end of Sept 23, 2009 AU notebook:
"A lifetime spent watching and participating in games at Brantley High left the Gulley* native naive about the world of big-time college football."

-4 universities using SB system of measurement
-always sit with momentary standing when outside the student section. i can feel the glares from behind me.

Yea, although admittedly dumb, he isn't a bad OC in the right situation, but Auburn definitely wasn't the right situation. I think it very similar to the Malzahn situation at Arkansas. Nutt is similar to Tuberville in a lot of ways and I don't think either could get comfortable with these new fangled offenses.
