Gene Chizik speaks, 9/27

Hey everyone. Let's boogie.

Opening comment: It's great to be 4-0 at this point in the season. After looking at last night, obvious we were disappointed in a number of things. We've got to go back to work today and continue to improve in a lot of areas.

On coaching against Lane Kiffin (former Southern Cal assistant) in the 2006 Rose Bowl: ``It was a little bit different because we had a few weeks to prepare for it. When we played them years ago, they were one of the best offenses in the history of college football. It's tough. It's tough to prepare for. They did a nice job with it. It seems like it was centuries ago."

Photo credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn University

On Auburn's win at Tennessee in 2004: ``That was a huge momentum carrier for us. That was really a big away game, momenutum-boost league game. That was a great game all the way around. Special teams. Offense. Defense. It was one of those nights when we were firing on all cylinders."

Is Tennessee's offense the same as Southern Cal?: ``They do some similar things. It's not 100 percent exactly that, but there is some carry-over."

Disappointed with the Ball State game? ``We had sloppy penalties. We had nine. We were sleepwalking at the beginning there somewhat. We score 28, 30 points and then we went back to sloppy football. I didn't like the flow of the game. Those games are tough because you can only win those games one way and have everyone happy. A lot of things could have been much cleaner, executed much cleaner."

On Gabe McKenzie: ``We're trying to see exactly where Gabe can help our football team the most. We'll take that step by step. I'm really proud of Gabe for being unselfish and doing the things we asked him to do."

On being displeased with the Ball State win: ``I'm never displeased with a win. Let me clarify that. I just wish we could have played with more focus. You can't be happy with a game where you have nine penalties - no matter what they were. 4th and 1 at Auburn? You've got to make a first down. That's just what you have to do. I'm very glad to be 4-0? Am I satisfied with the way we played last night? No, I'm not."

On Byron Isom:
``It's something we've got to plan for. We'll continuously work to plan on aration with some guys. Bart is certainly a guy who has been around a long time, has played a lot of football, and he's in the equation."

(Isom, a starter at guard, has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules)

On playing Jamar Travis last night: ``Things happen and we've got to make some tough decisions. Maybe that decision wasn't clear or to the point it is now a month ago. We've got to get through the year. Whoever we have to play to help us win, we're going to do that. Numbers-wise, we're not where we want to be."

On playing Andre Harris last night: ``Andre did play. That was as a backup. Same situation Jamar is in."

On making the decision to pull redshirts: ``It gets hard. There's nowhere else to go. They all know the lay of the land. This might not have been our intent in Game One, but that's where we're at."

On Auburn's defense lagging last night once the first-team guys were pulled: ``I don't care about all that. I've got to get my guys to the next game. When it's a four-touchdown lead, we're not worried about stats. We're worried about next week."

On the phrase Do What We Do: ``There's no real origin of it. Without getting philosophical, when you repeatedly do something, you become a product of … your habits. This is what we do on offense. This is what we do on defense. We're not trying to re-invent the wheel. We've got to do what we've planned to do. Nothing revolutionary. We need to do what we do and do it better when we're not playing well."

On the idea of having a theme each season: ``I like having a theme. I like having something to hang your hat on and go back and refer to."

On Hot Carter: ``He maybe played a little heavy-legged, but he needed to get in there. He needed to get those reps. Rusty, but played hard. He'll get better every game. It was a good test for him in the first game."

On running the Wildcat sans Burns: ``We have other people who definitely can do the wildcat. Kodi is our guy because he brings some potential that other guys don't have."

On the punt-return problems: ``Somebody's just got to step up to the plate. They've got to do it in a game. It's very, very disheartening that we've spent so much time and we can't find somebody to catch the ball."

From the previous thread.

Re: Offensive philosophy's impact on the D.

Gulf Shores,

I said the change in philosophy would allow for more points allowed during a season as the D is on the field more.

However, I said the reason we gave up 30 to Ball State is lack of quality depth and the D being put in bad positions to start drives.

However, please feel free to take whatever you want out of what someone wrote.

OK, I am posting this for the third and final time, I promise. We just keep changing threads before I get an answer. Those of you with lots of knowledge of the rules, please look at this.

On the first punt, I think the officials totally missed the call. The same thing happened in the Titans game last week, but the officials got it right. If a fair catch is called, the player has the right to catch the ball even if he muffs it, provided the ball doesn't hit the ground. What am I missing?

SECTION 5. Fair Catch
Dead Where Caught
ARTICLE 1. a. When a Team B player makes a fair catch, the ball becomes dead
where caught and belongs to Team B at that spot.
b. When a valid fair catch signal is made, the unimpeded opportunity to catch
a free or scrimmage kick is extended to a player who muffs the kick and still
has an opportunity to complete the catch. This protection terminates when the
kick touches the ground. If the player subsequently catches the kick, the ball is
placed where it was first touched) (A.R. 6-5-1-I-IV).

Without seeing what happened cincy.....

what if the ball hit the Auburn guy's shoulder pad and bounced forward toward the opponent on punt coverage?

I would assume the coverage guy has as much right to the ball without regard to whether it hit the ground or not.

Cincy...seems like the refs blew it. Nice work.

Cincy, this is responding to your post on the last thread....I'm thinkin the UT game is a tossup. I think that we will beat Ark. My preseason pick was 6-7 wins and as many as 8 if everything went great. Conversely, if we had a few too many injuries, only 5 wins was possible. If we don't have injuries and the OL can adjust to losing Isom, 6-8 wins now look realistic.

Steve..the UT D is much better than the MSU D that we played.

FAJ,
That is what happened in the Titans game. The returner signaled a fair catch, it hit his hands and he juggled it, the ball bounced into the defender's chest and he ran it in for a touchdown. The officials waved it off and said if you signaled for a fair catch, you had the right to the ball until it hit the ground. Think about it, if they have signaled for a fair catch all their attention is on the ball, not the defender. They have the right to the ball until it hits the ground. Or that is the way they explained it at the Titans game and the way I read the rulebook??

JGT..help me out. CGC said the following regardoing the Isom question: "We'll continuously work to plan on aration with some guys. Bart is certainly a guy who has been around a long time, has played a lot of football, and he's in the equation."

What is the definition of the word "aration"? Also, when CGC says "Bart", is he referring to Eddins? and does he mean Eddins to replace Isom instead of Sullen that started last night?

Cincy, I reviewed that call on the muffed punt again today. It was a good call. I didn't see it during the game, but looking closely the ball bounced off Gulley and in to the hands of the defensive player. I thought the defensive player hit Gulley while he was juggling it, but that wasn't the case. The ball had already left his arms and hit the defensive guy.

8:05 PM

FSJ, sorry to hear about Hightower. I saw the play and it wasn't a dirty short, but it was an ugly hit. I can't see them making it illegal because if he hit him higher or lower he would have likely been fine. It is just troubling to see someone hit directly on the knee cap. I imagine even players try to avoid something like that.

Steve,

UT fans are probably looking at our stats and scores saying and saying "that Auburn D had issues with Ball State. They are not nearly as impressive as I thought"

How teams play against schools they know they can beat is a lot different than how they will play against a team they HAVE to beat.

8:15 PM

We will score against UT's D, but they will slow us down and they will limit our chances more than any of the 4 teams we've played so far.

We've already won 4, and still have Furman to go. You think its realistic that this team will win only one more game?

I can agree with you on 8, but winning only 6 at this point would require a total meltdown. Not saying it can't happen, but sure seems unlikely to me.

8:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, Ohio was in the game until late. They weren't playing backups. The UT defense is not as impressive as one might think. Watch their game against Florida or against Ohio and you get the same conclusion. Florida's offense isn't that great this season and UT gave up over 300 yards in a clock burning game. UTs offense had somewhere around 200 yards. UT has a good defense, no doubt, but they are overrated. Their pass coverage looked lacking against Ohio, even with Eric Berry out there.

8:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I assume the ball hitting another player or the ref is just like it hitting the ground. If the ball bounces and hits a player, even though it bounced off the receiver, the player who gets hit has to have a right to it. If not, that would be pretty bizarre.

8:29 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Auburn is in Sports Illustrate's mock 16 team playoff current standings. We'd be a 16 seed playing Florida if the season ended today. Of course, the season doesn't end today, there are no playoffs, and the polls that would determine such hypothetical playoffs would not be made up of SI writers, but it's fun to feel the love.

Steve,

Your assumpitons are just making up parts of the rule that don't exist. The rule is pretty clear about the ground, not other objects in the vicinity. The NFL rule is nearly identical, and a nearly identical play got called back, so I'd say that if you feel that way, this would be a bizarre rule in your book. I just say we got screwed.

Speaking of refs in the way, there was a game this weekend, I don't remember who, where a ref went ape$h!* when he got pushed by a blitzing linebacker trying to anticipate the snap count. Did anyone see this? I don't understand why the ref was in a two point stance in the place where a nosetackle would be in the first place, but the LB was running up and bumped into him, sending him falling into the center. I was sure he was gonna take a swing at the LB as he got up yelling and flexing.

how do you figure another player would be equal to the field. You can roll off another player and still not be considered down. Balls are not dead when they bounce of random feet, helmets, etc. I can't think of a single scenario where player=field.

Refs getting in the way aren't so uncommon, although I don't recall seeing it on a fair catch. One of the things you do see is players using the refs as in pseudo pick plays. It is hard to for a ref to call himself for an illegal pick.

I wouldn't call them sooooo bad. Just an average D. They are not elite.

I would say a horrible D could hold UT under 20 pts.

I meant I don't believe our defense is bad at all. I actually like it except for one linebacker spot and depth at linebacker. I am curious what other players are so concerning to the people that worry about our defense.

Florida's offense hasn't looked nearly as good this season. They are relying way to much on Tebow running the ball. A top notch defense will shut Florida down unless they develop some other skill players, particularly at WR.

Cincy is correct in her interpretation of the fair catch rule. Gulley could have bobbled it all the way to the 50 yard line an he is the ONLY one that has a right to the ball if he signaled a fair catch. He he is hit it is a penalty and if the ball is snatched from the air, it is down there. End of discussion., Nothing else matters period.
The refs got it wrong. Over. Move along.

And I do think this Alabama team has the potential to be much better than last season.

8:58 PM
Blogger michael said...

Here is what I don't get about our D: we knew the other O's stats would go up thanks to our O and the inherent loss in time of possession, but our D is struggling the most earl in games. This tells me the problem isn't that we are thin are that we are running and uptempo offense, but we are gameplanning poorly or the players are just not starting off with their heads in the game. Our D coaches need to do a better job of predicting what the offenses will exploit instead of adjusting to it. I know that is easier said than done, but the old staff did that quite well. Of course, we all know how poor they were at making midgame adjustments.

Somone on the last post asked how recruiting went last night. For those that don't care, skip this post.

It is common knowledge now that the big OL decommitted from fSU last night. He says his recruitment is now open. Good news for AU. Nothing else happened. AU had ALOT of junior athletes in. Next big weekend is not until the Ole Miss game.

So Steve you don't think giving up 500+ yards to WVU is bad or 30 points? or 30 to Ball State

That recruit was Ed Christan, a 4 star offensive tackle. I hope we get him. Things look good. With FSU laying an egg, we are in good position. I believe we are the only teams going after him at the moment.

Hate to see Harris and Travis lose their redshirt, but I don't think coaches go out of their way to redshirt players today as much as they did in the past. Looks like the coaches have decided some more players are needed on both the OL and DL.

Jay, any idea why T Zachery is not given a shot at returning kicks? Fear of losing him to injury, perhaps?

I don't think we played well against WV early. As for 30 meaningless points to Ball State, who cares. Our starting defense wasn't on the field most of the game. That is a big whoopie and actually them scoring 30 may have been a good thing in terms of motivating players.

W Va we be the hardest O we go against all year. I believe that. And they got about 75 yards or so at the end of each half in trash time.

Ball St... that game troubled me more. But they did have a ton of turnovers the first couple of games, and that is killer for an offense. I still think the D is good enough for us to win a lot of games. But yeah, I am worried.

But UT? UT???? They are soooooo bad on offense.

I agree with Steve for once.

I seriously don't think the 30 points were that big of a deal.

It wasn't like the game was in question.

I guarantee our back ups are better than the starters at New Hampshire...NH just had more to play for in their game.

After an emotional come from behind win the week before and playing a cupcake in Ball State, our team took them lightly and up 40-10 the intensity was gone.

If somehow of offense reverted back to last year on Saturday vs Ball State, we wouldn't have given up 30, because the intensity would have been a lot different.

No, they shouldn't be better than the New Hampshire starters. When you get inexperienced players in the game, they make mistakes. Even with that being said, if you look at how they scored, a lot was given to them by our special teams and a gift of a pass from Caudle. I have no concern with our starting defense or our secondary. I do have a little concern on the defensive line because UT has a solid offensive line. I still am concerned with Eltoro as a starter at linebacker. I am sure the coaches have seen more than I, but so far I would prefer Adam Herring. As for depth at linebacker, it is scary thin. We have played around 7 linebackers, but until recently I couldn't even name most of them. Gaston, Evans, Christopher, and Humphries are all terribly inexperienced.

Anyone think the Braves can pull out a miracle and make up 2.5 games with 7 games to go? I see the Rockies going 3-3 in their upcoming series against the Brewers (in Denver) and Dodgers (in LA). That would mean the Braves would need to go 6-1 vs the Nationals and Marlins, all at home to force a one game playoff at Turner Field. That very well could happen.

9:15 PM

I am just guessing, but I suspect we look real attractive to Christian. We obviously lack a lot in terms of depth on the offensive line. Come 2011, there is a lot of playing time available there and there is a potential for some next season too, with McCain gone. Also, the kid is from Georgia, so he would be reasonably close to home, although I haven't checked his hometown.

AUfan-AU is not really pursuing him from what i have heard. They have others on the list they really, really want. I think they take only two more and Akeem Cunningham is one they are looking at really hard. In fact, the 4* kid form ARk that decommitted from Neb. has all but begged for an official visit and AU is hesitant on him. Go figure. They must like who they have.

9:18 PM
Blogger michael said...

Who will be harder for us to defend that W Va jhag? They shredded us worse than anyone else than last year, so there is precedence. We are not good at tackling the scat backs and mobile QBs. They had the most mobile QB and best scat back of anyone we will face. We have had a good pass rush in every game, but when you can't tackle the QB, it is neutralized.

So it is definitely not out of the question that, match up wise, they were the worst offense for us to face.

I know things can change in recruiting though, I have not heard his name mentioned with Auburn in some time.

9:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, I would better characterize our defense as above average in terms of starter, but definitely below average in terms of depth. Our defense was outstanding last season, but got worn down. That is my concern with Tennessee is them wearing our defense down, particularly at linebacker, with their running game. Also, they are playing both Bryce Brown and David Oku. I didn't realize Oku was playing anywhere other than on special teams, but he was in at receiver at times against Ohio. Throw in Hardesty and they aren't going to have any problems with depth at tailback. We definitely have issues with depth at linebacker.

9:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

jhag - I would agree we are on the bottom tier of SEC defenses right now. However, if you look around, you will find the bottom tier is much bigger than normal, including the likes of Arkansas and LSU.

Seriously, this New Hampshire talk is crazy.

NH is a 1-AA team who was in a close game with a team they were told they couldn't beat...the intensity is a bit different than reserves being brought in on 40-10 game where you know you are going to win.

The rest of the team is pretty good and the pitching should be stellar next year.

wtc, thanks for the info. I appreciate seeing some specific names on players being actively recruited. Things look promising on the recruiting front for AU.

Oku isn't playing runningback typically. Bryce and Hardesty are handling that. But should one of those go down, they just reload with Oku.

9:24 PM
Blogger wtc said...

About the defense.

The 30 points was disappointing. I think it hurts AU in the minds of voters and everyone else that did not see the game. That is where it hurts the most. AU shouls not, no matter who they have on the team, give up 30 to Ball St. Do you recall the 1st teamers having to go back after the interception? The game was in hand until then. the 1st team held them to a FG, I think, but look at what could have happened, injury wise.

9:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Not worried about Oku, but I think Hardesty and Brown will get some yardage on us... a whole lot of yardage if we tackle like we did early on vs WVU.

9:24 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Why are we talking about him. Holmes has 42 yards in 4 games. If we're worried about his catches, he has 2. In 4 games. For 13 yards. We're talking about Oku? Ahhhhggghhghhhh.

Bryce Brown is a bad man, though.

9:26 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Who will be harder for us to defend that W Va jhag?

Well considering WVU only had 438 and 33 points against LIBERTY (1-AA)
WE gave up 30 points and 515 yards.

Then they had 509 yards on ECU and 35 points...

PLUS the QB threw us the ball 4 or 5 times? SEC QB's wont do that...

Alabama
Ole Miss (they will be ready to go by the time OCT 31st comes around)
possibly LSU if Scott freaks our

This recruiting class doesn't look great yet, but there is a lot of potential there. Most of our 3 stars are on the edge of being 4 stars, so the stars are misleading to look at and could definitely change, although that obviously doesn't change how good they truly are. Should we get a couple of high rated offensive linemen and one of the big 3 runningbacks, I will be very happy. I am wondering if Eric Mack could end up on the plains.

Some other teams may very well put up bigger numbers than W Va against us, but that will be because they actually have real defenses. Place W Va's O on LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas, or Alabama (that one is certainly debatable), and I think each of those teams' chances improves against us.

It is certainly an opinion, but certainly not a off my rocker uneducated nuckin futs opinion like you seem to think it is, jhag.

jhag, in terms of playing and cohesiveness and experience, who has the better players isn't necessarily who has the better defense. Take Vandy for example. They turn out good teams with lesser talent. Inexperienced players make more mistakes that inexperienced players, regardless of the talent level. And as for looking down on players from lower rated divisions and teams, Walter Payton played for Jackson State, so he obviously stunk.

jhag,

So you are saying the intensity of being in a close game where you are trying to scratch out a win and being in a blow out where you know you have it wrapped up is going to be the same???

I agree and believe that our 2nd and third stringers are better than New Hampshire's starters, but NH had a whole lot more to play for in a close game than we did up by 30.

A lot of eighteen year old kids don't see this the same as we do. They were just out having fun it wasn't life or death up 40-10.

9:33 PM

Ok, I'm convinced now we can make it to 7-5. We'll win at least one of the next two games. Even with our not-so-special teams and our less than stellar defense.

I really can't remember an AU defense ranking as low statistically as this one. It's been a long while.

9:35 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The bad thing is, we didn't give up much yardage against Ball State at all...I think 260 total yards.

Which means our D was put in some pretty bad positions by special teams and penalties to give up those points.

Those are positions we can't put our D in in October.

9:35 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

RK,

If that's really the case, I'm terrified. If our D can really turn it off and on, we've got motivation issues. Serious, serious, motivation issues.

Backups are inexperienced and that is why they are playing. It is hard to compare them with starters at another level. A good example is that kid Chizik chewed on the sideline. His name escapes me at the moment, but he was inexperienced and made a bonehead move with all the best intentions. I am sure he wanted to hit someone to impress the coaches.
