LIVE BLOG: Chizik presser

Welcome to Gene Chizik's weekly presser.

  • Opening statement: "We're going to have to play a much better football ... to beat a ver, very good West Virginia team. This will get us another step in the direction of finding out how good we are."

  • What do they have to work on?: "Special teams. We're putting ourselves 80 yards away on every kickoff return. That's glaring. Our punt-return issues -- those are glaring. Our coverage teams ... we're giving up too many hidden yards. We've got to measure every inch. Offensively and defensively, just the things you see."

  • On the offense: ``We didn't know what to expect. We still don't know what to expect. We've only played two games."

  • On complacency: ``I don't think that's who we're going to let them be ... and that's not who they really are. I don't know how a player could walk out (of a meeting) and feel good about it."

  • On replacing Tommy Trott: "Tommy is day by day. We've got a plan." He also plans to give Lutzenkirchen a bigger role. Chizik also mentioned Gabe McKenzie.

  • On fans who (allegedly) are penciling in Auburn as the Western Division champions: "They are? I didn't know they were." Goes on predictable rant about how Auburn fans are the greatest ever.

  • On having four home games top open the season: ``It's a building block every week with a better team -- or a team that gives you different issues." He praised West Virginia for its speed.

  • ``We're a work in progress. I'm not sure what we are yet."

  • On Noel Devine: ``He's exactly what you look at -- you tackle him a few times, then the next thing you know he's hitting his head on the goal post."

  • He says West Virginia is a good "run-fitting" team. Also praises the team's speed again. Chizik says it's a 3-4 deal.

  • He loves the West Virginia quarterback. ``He brings a lot to the table for them."

  • On if Auburn is an under-the-radar team: ``I don't know. We just do what we do."

  • ``I think we're ready to play this type of game right now. Had we opened with them, I don't know if I had said that."

  • On Ted Roof addressing Auburn's offense earlier this week: "It all ties in. Everybody's connected. For us to call a game defensively and feel like the offense can get us out of binds periodically -- that's very important. And you can flip it. It's a comforting feeling."

  • On how the defense benefits from working against Malzahn's offense: ``It helps a lot. Our guys have been, for the most part, have been pretty good about being able to stand out there and survive -- considering how few backups we have."

  • He likes the offensive line: ``When you rush for 390 yards, it's not all tailbacks. They have not arrived, but I think they're getting better. They're playing together. That's what I'm excited about."

  • On Kodi Burns: ``He's an Auburn man. That's what he is. That's what we does. That's what we've been saying since Day One."

  • That's a WRAP.

We are looking at are options there.

J-z, other than a 3 year contract, that is only tie I see for him being here that long. I would be shocked if he continues this type sucess and stays more than 2 years max.

j-z, I would take the under on Malzahn being here three years, although he has a three year contract. I don't think he leaves after this season unless we do great things, but a successful 2010 season would likely see him in a HC position somewhere.

I have an idea, which I'm SURE has been covered here already, but I missed it if it has...

JGT, next time Chizik stands there and says that player X is "day to day", just stand up, throw a shoe at him, and say "YOU LIE!"

Maybe then we can have something controversial to discuss.

Anything is better than the "well we're going to have to pass the ball here in the 2nd half" Tuberville line at half time of every game the past two years only to run 30 times and pass it 4.

Hopefully we also won't get 10 straight years of "well we're a young team".

11:49 AM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

My take is Malzahn stays For At Least his 3 year contract. He will not take the first HC job offered - see Chiz for that mistake. The reason I say at least 3 is that is what I think it will take AU to get an SEC title. With that on his resume, he can negotiate a better gig than an Iowa State.

Just my .02.

One of my goals for this season was to never hear a coach say we need to simplify the offense. Last season was a primse example. I think our offense against Alabama was drawn up on a napkin, and they didn't bother to write on the back.

I expect to see gradual growth in the economy. You always have a period after a recession where companies are hesitant to hire, but I think we are over the panic caused by the elections. Walstreet didn't like Obama or McCain for good reason. Bush wasn't exactly winning them over with his spending either. Things should improve, but it will be gradual. I am investing in the overseas markets more these days.

I don't see anybody with those expectations and whoever asked that question was disingenuous at best.

Ya never know until it's official, I'm not going to plan on it, but if everything goes right, there's no reason they couldn't be in Atlanta in December

I wonder if WVU first team is any speedier than OUR first team offense. I imagine if you've seen the speed it won't take you by surprise at the beginning of the game like it would most. I have a feeling they have not seen a tempo like our offense runs, which may be tough to replicate in a week, unless they've been actually trying to work on it since Fall camp started. But I don't think they would put that much credence into Mahlzahn's system.

2.Name the last job Saban lasted at more than 5 years?

3.Name the last place he worked at that still like him?

For the most part, I agree. I'm a big fan of both bands, but the Stones had an edge that the Beatles didn't have. The Beatles were more influential and more experimental, but the Stones just flat out rock...well except for that mid/late 70's attempt at a disco sound.

Here - we can start the hate early.

My pick for Auburn - West Virginia. Purely speculation from my point of view. I cite no sources.

The Tigers offensive resurgence has generated plenty of excitement on the Plains. The first real test of the season comes in the form of West Virginia, a team that has found a solid passing game to go with the run in spite of replacing four offensive linemen and do-everything quarterback Pat White. The Tigers defense is a good starting group, but lack of depth and experience could come back to haunt them in a shoot-out. This one will more than likely turn into a score-fest as both offenses will find ways to exploit the defenses. Give the edge to West Virginia with more proven wide receivers and special teams performers. West Virginia 35, Auburn 31

Like I said, maybe I'm wrong and I hope that I'm not, but a team that gives up chunks of yards to Liberty and ECU and doesn't really put either team away starting a very very inexperienced OL on the road with a QB who has never started on the road doesn't scare me like it does others.

Sensi, you are a traitor and evil for picking West Virginia. Oh, one other thing. You could also be right. If our defensive line doesn't get a lot of pressure on their QB while preventing runs, it could get tough.

In some ways our offense resembles what West Virginia use to have, a running spread that passed second. They are trying to get more balanced. So far, it looks like they are, but we will have to see.

I see it being a bit of a shootout for sure. I was listening to the ESPN Radio's College Gameday while on the road Saturday. Kiper was talking about WV's QB being a possible second rounder. Couple that with Devine and I see lots of points on Saturday, though I expect Auburn to still come through.

SFC, if we score 56 points i'll grab my sister's couches and set those bad boys on fire at Toomer's! and i dare Jet to try and stop me!

Scottie ...

If we score 56 and win, I'll burn your sister's couches.

More than that, I'll burn WTC's daughter's couch in Auburn.

I understand he's not happy with one his daughter has and may be looking to upgrade.

What better way to expedite the process than winning on Saturday night and giving our fellow HOTTIE a hand.

1:33 PM

I'll find Tim Couch and burn him.

1:34 PM

even better.

RK, if you can find him, i'm sure many Browns fans would help you out.

Eddie, we do have problems, although we they are much fewer than last season.

I am not certain of how good West Virginia's defense will be. It is entirely possible we win a shootout.

1:36 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Let's burn Tim!

Keep in mind that this is far from the most important game of the season. I considered the most important LaTech. Arkansas comes second. Tennessee is third. Beat Arkansas and Tennessee and we have a decent season.

Apropos of nothing ...

Did you folks notice the Hunchback of Mississippi State this weekend? Dan Mullen's a got a little of a humpback.

Does that make him a quasi-Quasimodo?

Jet, don't burn WTC's daughter's couch unless WTC is going to upgrade it. Otherwise, my sister might nit have anywhere to sleep.

1:43 PM

Well Sensi your singing and playing must be pretty rough - you've been firewalled at my office.

1:43 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Well let's take all the couches and Tim Couch to Tuscaloosa after the game and burn it down.

1:43 PM

Yeah, same here ... The IT Gong Show took out Sensi.

Or let's enlist Michael's help and drop coolers of poop with parachutes. The Cousin Humpers will see scores of Little Playmates descending from above and think it's manna.

Does anyone know when this week's games for HABOTN Pickers will be posted? Sorry if this has already been asked. I haven't had a chance to catch up on posts today.

I've been asking all week ScottChoc, evidently it happens when it happens. Yahoo has their big grimey paws all over it, trying to make sure we can't pick at our offices.

Anyone familiar with the B-ham area, where is a good place to stay near the BJCC that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

I predict the team with the most points at the end of the game will win.

Welcome to the club.

Thanks, MTD. I actually have barely had a chance to read the HABOTN since the middle of last week. Today I am procrastinating on sending out some shipments, but I think the procrastination period is about to have to end. I also hadn't had a chance to check my NFL fantasy league results until now. Let me just say I'm happy with Drew Brees as my QB!
