First post: Friday of Week Six

Hey everyone. I had a moderately tough travel day on Thursday. I didn't get into Tulsa until 11 p.m. or so. I was debating when to write today's story -- yesterday morning or yesterday afternoon after arriving at my parents' house in Tulsa. Let's just say I made the right decision. The story is linked below.

My journey sucked, but I want to give Delta/Northwest some propers. After our second attempt to land in Tulsa failed and we were forced to fly back to Memphis, they easily could have washed their hands of it. Instead, they refueled the plane, summoned a new crew and we made a third (and ultimately successful) approach into Tulsa. To avoid that storm, though, we flew all the way to Kansas City and back down into Tulsa.

What normally is a 45-minute flight became a nearly two-hour flight, but we made it. Big love to Delta/Northwest for that.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

TODAY'S SCHEDULE
Auburn is flying to Fayetteville, Ark., today. That trek will begin at the Montgomery airport. The team will stay in Springdale, located approximately 10 miles north of Fayetteville. I am chillin' in Tulsa with my peeps, going to a football game at my old high school (Holland Hall Prep) and kickin' it with my boy Woodhead alongside the gridiron. I'm pretty geeked.

Saturday's situation: I'm leaving Tulsa around 6:30 a.m. for the two-hour drive to Fayetteville. Traffic can get gnarly over there, so my goal is to walk into the press box around 10 a.m.

Here's what the next few days look like. All times are CDT:

Fri., Oct. 9, flying to Arkansas via Montgomery Regional Airport
Sat., Oct. 10, at Arkansas, 11 a.m. (ESPN)
Sun., Oct. 11, 4:30 p.m.
Mon., Oct. 12, OFF
Tue., Oct. 13, 4:30 p.m. (Chizik presser at 11:30 a.m.; some players available between 1 and 2 p.m.)
Wed., Oct. 14, 4:30 p.m.
Thu., Oct. 15, 4:30 p.m. (Tiger Talk at 7 p.m.)
Fri., Oct. 16, OFF
Sat., Oct. 17, vs. Kentucky, 6:30 p.m. (ESPNU)

If he thought he could, I think Malzahn would try to hang 70 on Arky. Ole Nutt too for that matter.

Lot of subplots to this one with Malzahn-Arky (negative), Tubs-Petrino (negative), and Chizik-Petrino (probably ok with each other).

On another note, I think a BLT might be a good lunch choice.

I find it odd that there are so many doubters concerning this Auburn team. I guess we are winning with smoke and mirrors while the darlings of the media are just soooo good. Bama, Fla, Texas and who ever else is at the top of the heep really haven't played any tougher schedule over all. When they win it's WOW look what they did. When Auburn wins it's well so and so really isn't that good. WELL it really dosen't matter at this stage of the season.

WERK, I see you're back to your plan of going to both ABB/WSP shows. For your BBQ plans, I'd recommend Miss Myra's for chicken, but for pork I think Tin Roof on Valleydale Rd is better.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Freeman is a very happy, jolly kind of guy. I just think he gets too excited on the field and loses track of his responsibilities. He's lacks discipline.

Different picks are what makes football so much fun. We all have our gut feeling and sometimes we are right sometimes we are wrong but we still have fun doing it.
Auburn 9 Arky 6 ( three field goals to two)

Just kidding I don't have a clue this week except both teams will be in the 30's or 40's

Yeah, my wife and I decided last night that we needed a weekend away from the house so we'd just go to both shows.

We ended up getting a really good deal on Priceline for the new downtown Hyatt which is a mile or so away from the BJCC.

How far would the Tin Roof be away from that area?

11:05 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eltoro doesn't lack discipline, he lacks tackles.

11:06 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I think you are right Jay he seems like he cannot contain himself and is a loose cannon when he gets on the field. Hope the coaches can calm him down as the season moves on.

Glad to hear you made it to Tulsa okay, Jay. I noticed that Trott quoted the HABOTN video opening theme. Do you think there are players that read this blog?

11:12 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Miss Myra's is a bit closer to downtown, but Tin Roof is a straight shot down I-65 and is right off the interstate (exit 247, I think). That's probably 10-12 miles from downtown. They're both good. Miss Myra's is a dive, which is generally a good thing when it comes to bbq. Too much Bammer paraphenalia for me, though. Tin Roof is strange in that it's in a shopping center, rather than stand-alone. That put me off at first, but that pork bbq sure is tasty.

Here's the Barnhart recap:

Auburn at Arkansas: Auburn showed me a lot by winning at Tennessee. Now the Tigers will be in a track meet in Fayetteville. Somebody in this game is going to have to make a defensive stop. Auburn has a better chance of doing it. Auburn 42, Arkansas 35.

[Comment From Scottie B in Tennessee]
WDE Coach Tubs! How difficult is it for defensive linemen to adjust to blocking schemes like Malzahn's where you've got tackles on one side and guards on the other? Watching this offensive line and the way they work is fun.

Tommy Tuberville: Yeah, Scottie this is a veteran offensive line for Auburn. They're very athletic across the line of scrimmage. I've enjoyed watching them on film and I think the misdirection has really helped the offensive line

Tommy Tuberville: It gives them blocking angles on the defensive players and gives them an opportunity to be more aggressive

-not much substance but i tried.

I played LB on our intramural team at Auburn, and I do indeed still have a pulse. Think Chizik wants me to head to practice next week SteveFC? Let him know I'm available.

Actually it isn't. It's Friday and it's after 5pm.

If Bates wasn't so good at safety we could put him up there. If Etheridge could tackle we could put him up there, too. Everybody else back there is 175lbs or less. No chance.

5:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wake, I would go for it. We have about half a dozen linebackers and several can't play because of injury. By the way, what kind of 40 time you got?

5:09 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

By the way, what happened to Etheridge? He used to be a staple back there. Now he can't tackle. He can't cover. Gives up big plays. Woe is me.

Gandy, Harris, Blackmon..who else should still be in a an Auburn uni this year?

5:11 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

Oh yea, Trahan...

5:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Etheridge has actually been doing a lot of run support because of their confidence in Bates. I can see Etheridge playing as a pseudo linebacker against Arkansas, with Washington or Adams taking his normal spot.

5:11 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Guess you're pretty surprised about the whole 5-0 thing huh Jordan?

5:13 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

Now, Adams, there's another one. The guy can close like no other but can't tackle yet. We get him tackling and the sky's the limit. Love watching him cover the field no KO coverage. Ugly to watch him tackle the return man. But he's gets to him just about every time.

5:14 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

No, I'm not. I had us 6-0 to start but I had it sort of backwards in terms of offense and defense production although I questioned the Roof hire.

5:15 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

My 40 times is pretty good Steve... the only problem is I weigh about 175... I hear thats a bit on the light side for an SEC linebacker.

Cameron just said on Sportscall that Blackmon has left the Calgary CFL team, disappointed with his playing time.

5:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I know Blackmon turned pro to support his family, but it is highly possible it will hurt them in the long run. He should have stayed for another season in college where he could have gotten more playing time and experience. They guy needed work on his cover skills.

wtc, you are the source for good information. I had not heard about the Eltoro run-in with the coach. That sounds like it could be a multiple-game deal.

Freeman was out of position on several plays against UT and then when he was in position, he went in recklessly and took himself out of position. He did not fight off many blocks. On Sunday, he did not take the review of his play very well. He did not show for practice the next day (whichever day was next)but did show up the next one. he is still on the team but will sit for now. Some think he is down for 3 games. but that is just what I have heard.

6:04 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Geez, behind every silver lining is a dark cloud.

I almost hope the Eltoro film room story is true. I'd love to think that our coaches would sit someone for insubordination, even if they played a position with major warm body shortages.

Here's hoping he gets his head back in the game, no matter what is going on.

Freeman could survive on poor talent alone at lower level ball, at this level, unless you are an elite talent, that won't cut it. Good for the coaches for bringing the young man back down to earth.

OK - I'm filling out my 5-team parlay for the weekend.... this is what I got....

AU -2.5 vs Ark

FL -7.5 vs LSU

GT (line +3 GT's way)straight up vs Fla St.

As bad as I hate it - 'Bammer -4.5 vs Rebels

Finally - Dogs (line +1.5 GA's way)straight up vs TN.

Did I win?

7:42 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

There are a thousand, maybe two, questions around that parlay. That'd be an accomplishment to win.

I;m fixin' to start on my Pro one for Sunday Peter - I got some time to knock down that Q count to a 997 number or so.

7:48 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

I don't think it matters if Tebow plays, the kid they are trotting out there as his back-up has a canon for an arm.

7:50 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Wow LT, I'd say the only sure bet on that is Bama to cover.

I can honestly say all of the other games could go either way.

Only one I might disagree with is UF-LSU. It's an odd numbered year, so go with The Hat to cover, maybe even win straight up.

8:16 PM

I'm not just saying that because it's Bama FSJ. It just seems to happen a lot and that seems to be the lopsided game.

8:17 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

No way, ehyou.

I'm going with history. In the last 50 years, Ole Miss is 4-2 against Bama with a Manning under center. They are 2-25 with everyone else.

I don't see it changing this year.

8:18 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Lopsided? If a pig has to legs shorter on one side he is a lopsided pig the bacon is still good but Auburn still whups em. Ole Miss is still Ole Miss.

A little story from last weekend.....

I had my 5-team with AU straight, LSU straight and OK giving up the points vs Miami plus two others..... OK was my lock.... Hit 4 of 5 on that one. So ticked off i blew off the pro games - my 5 I had written down hit...... It suxs to be me....

BTW - I only put a 20 spot a week on these - no big money for me as I would not enjoy the weekend.

8:23 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I actually saw one of the two without a Manning under center...

1988 on Homecoming. Bill Curry's coming out party. We didn't even complete a pass.

It was the day the Bryant Museum opened. We were going to visit it after the game. I said something to my Dad about it as we were leaving....He said so eloquently.. "&#$(&#$(*& the Bryant Museum."
