And so it begins
So Memphis fired coach Tommy West today, effective at season's end, and ESPN.com has assembled an intriguing list of possible candidates.
Welcome to the Coaching Carousel.
Well, that would shorten Tuberville's commutes to Jimmy Sexton's office. On the other hand, Memphis is a weak program located in a (relatively) cold area of the Southeast.
Ummm, no. Not happening.
Malzahn? Maybe. I just don't think he's accomplished enough as a college coordinator to warrant a serious look, but I could be wrong. We'll all be keeping an eye on this as things progress.
Welcome to the Coaching Carousel.
Sources told ESPN.com that Memphis is expected to attempt to hire a high-profile coach. Possible candidates include former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville; Division II North Alabama coach Terry Bowden, another former Auburn coach; Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn; and LSU assistant Larry Porter, the former Memphis running back.

Would gus really want to go to Memphis? Head coach or not.. he has the chance to win Big at Auburn and punch his ticket to any major school... he is making great money and needs to "prove" his O in the big conf. (sec)
If a short korean spoke in the woods and no one was there to hear him... would his words make a sound?
someone say something or I will eat your dogs.
DL, you're not alone.
whew...
thought I was in the twilight zone.. or worse the bama chat room..
ewwwwwwww!!!
I think Gus would take the job if it was offered. Sure. Why not?
My guess is Memphis will examine head coaches first. A lot of head coaches.
I wonder the effect, if any, of Tommy West's speech on the coach search.
I want to read that.
Really?
I watched it 2x... i did not know if I should clap or laugh at the end..
I heard they were going after Saban.
great carousel pic!
Word of advice: don't let the SEC officials see it, they'll rule it's not a pic.
JayGT - Eddie's 3:46 pm post has link to West press conference
E- Bro's post has the link to the video. I haven't seen it yet but intend to watch.
I have also seen Trooper Taylor mentioned. I can see him or Bowden going for this. I doubt Tuberville or Malzahn would settle for Memphis.
CTT is at UVA... bank it.
This comment has been removed by the author.
what are everyones thoughts on an IOWA matchup??? I thought it would have been ISU
The Terry Bowden mention is the most intriguing to me.
why, fsj?
I just watched the Tommy West sermon.
It was awesome.
I guess the thought of Bowden running free in Memphis....
I need to go check that out Jay.
Tommy West video is embedded in this story.
It's pretty darn awesome in my book.
Jay G,
You didn't give a take on Trooper's name being thrown around. Thoughts?
He had me until the part about how newspapers need to ask the coach how they can help.
a.) That's not our job.
b.) Most coaches would tell me to stick it if I asked that.
c.) Auburn coaches wouldn't say that to me because I can't talk to them except for pre-designated times ... just like in preschool.
Take on Trooper's name being thrown around: Get real.
I agree, JGT. Superb statement by soon-to-be-former Coach West.
Trooper Link
via Andy Bitter
Yea. He brought the heat in the right way. I bet a lot of (employed) coaches are watching that clip and enjoying the heck out of it.
Man, I've always wanted to say that.
I'm sure he didn't really mean that, JGT. I suspect he intended to say something to the effect of focusing on positive news stories rather than Finebauming all the time.
Is that a verb?
they've got scoop, Jaybar style. It's in their name.
I generally find Football Scoop to be a credible spot for completely unsourced information, but I cannot envision a situation where Trooper Taylor is the next head coach at Memphis.
He hasn't even been a coordinator yet.
tommy west: failed coach/successful hero
Ask yourself: Does Trooper Taylor remind you of a head coach?
I know he's fun to watch. He's fun to hear, too.
Does he look like a head coach to you?
He reminds me of a coach I had around fourth grade, so yes!
Oh goodness
Just watched Auburn Football Everyday. Chizik got a little emotional at his post game speech after the Ole MIss game. Also watched the Auburn Review. Had a nice segment on Gus. He kept talking about fast forward a couple of years when he has his recruits here on offense and how it will come together. Should be fun to watch.
wait, that guy was an assistant. nevermind.
Head coaches are the face of a program and, for better or worse, project what that school wants people to see.
Trooper waves a towel and yells/encourages a lot -- at kids who play positions he doesn't coach.
He's the figurehead you want? I don't think that's right.
I'm not going to start assessing his strategic acumen because, really, I don't know.
I'm just going on what I see on Saturdays. He doesn't look like a future head coach to me.
I'd put Luper or Grimes or Eddie Gran ahead of Trooper Taylor.
Yeah people honestly just like Trooper because he chest bumps kids and waves a towel around...That means nothing as far as coaching is concerned
Troop could never be a head coach at a big school IMO im with JGT 100% here
wow. i don't think i could like Tommy West more than i do right now.
if there's that much drama going on behind the scenes at Memphis maybe Tater-Tot and Tuberville would feel right at home there. geez.
JayG, can you wave a towel like Trooper?
Guy's a phenom.
c'mon. gus is going nowhere near memphis. noel mazzone wasn't interested in memphis when he was at AU. that is how the job ultimately fell to west. he had a good run for memphis. i don't see tubs taking a cusa job if he can help it.
Phenom? Absolutely.
Valuable member of the staff? No doubt.
He may be one of the most important things to happen to Auburn since the 2004 season.
I still don't think he's on track to be a head coach.
trooper is right where he needs to be for the next 3-4 years. let's crank out 3-4 1st round WRs and then we'll talk about some HC jobs in the MAC or WAC.
I wonder how Finebaum's ratings are doing in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa?
Jay G- f-bomb is not on in Atlanta but I agree with your statement about negativity as entertainment.
Chip, did you snag any of those Weezer bootlegs from their site?
I was extremely satisfied.
He was on in Atlanta.
Like I said earlier, I'm not really concerned about Troop. If he stays, great. If not, we'll be fine.
If you could give me a choice of losing Troop or Gus, I'll let you take Troop.
On what THT said about Finebaum being a verb...
I think we're on the tip of a paradigm shift in how things will be reported.
Negativity-as-entertainment is losing its draw. Finebaum's ratings are down in the ONE market I TOTALLY KNOW (Montgomery) and I believe it's because people want more facts/educated speculation and less baloney.
(corrected)
EBro -- right on.
"He may be one of the most important things to happen to Auburn since the 2004 season."
what do you mean by this sir?
Jay G- when, I've been in Atlanta for 9 years and he hasn't been on here. You can sometimes make out the Gadsden feed, but that is because I live on the west side.
TBowden in Memphis? How much bigger will he get with all that BBQ around 24/7? He will explode right on camera.
i don't even remember where i got most of them. i think from napster in its heyday. glad you liked 'em jgt.
which service is more valuable to whom and who would pay more?
a proven ace recruiter at an SEC school.
first gig head coach at a mid-level MAC, WAC, CUSA or MW program.
Tubbs to Louisville, mark it.
I believe ND makes a run at Meyer and Saban. Neither take it, but they make at them.
Eddie -- Thanks for the clarification.
This delicious (yet spicy) chili Wifey fed me must be messin my brain.
The irony would be rich if Tubs ended up in Louisville.
WTC -- I said that about Saban a few days ago and two people I trust laughed at me.
Said no way Saban would go to Notre Dame.
He's a builder ... not a caretaker.
Jay G- I wish he was on. As bad as he is he is 100 times better than Atlanta radio. Atlanta sports radio is PATHETIC. There is only so many time you can listen to Buck talk about Georgia and Steak talk about food.
jhag: I think Taylor's enthusiasm makes a big difference inside the program ... and his antics have made a lot of fans feel like Auburn is FUN again.
Does that make sense?
My daughter loves watching him wave his towel and jump around ... and she's sooooo not alone.
She'll watch "Auburn Everyday ..." and only be interested in the Trooper stuff.
Maybe I'm naive, but I've never thought ND would be interested in having Satan for a coach.
JayG-I can understand there answer, but I think going to ND now is a builders job. I also think the pressures are less actually than at UA. I also think have a better national draw. I mean you are on NBC every week. With his ability to recruit, and there national limelight (even UA fan have to admit they are a more glamour school) he could build a dynasty there.
Notre Dame would be wise to hire Harbaugh from Stanford IMO.
Think about this. If you could choose any coach right now. Who would it be? He is on the short list at least. Now, of all those on the short list, who has the smallest buyout clause? Only one man answers the bell.
WTC- Meyer has an out clause in his UF contract for ND if I remember correctly. I think he is their top target.
My top coaches in America:
Urban Meyer
Nick Saban
Chris Petersen
Brian Kelly
Bob Petrino
buyout's not that big a deal for ND.
Meyer and Brian Kelly are my guesses for their wish list.
Harbaugh? Would ND be willing to risk hiring another "up and coming" Stanford coach?
Memories of Ty Willingham don't die easily.
steve sarkisian
brian kelly
chip kelly
chris petersen
paul rhoades
I agree Jay G. I just think he is a good fit for that job.
Ty Willingham at ND feels like a decade ago.
If he's patient another year or 2, Malzahn can do much better than Memphis. He needs to prove his philosophy works in a big conference.
Saban is building a dynasty right now.
He has more control at UA than he ever would at ND.
His next stop is the lake house in Georgia.
Your list looks good Jay, but on
that list, who is more inclined to go.
Peterson. I mentioned his name in the AU hunt and was shot down becasue he is a scientologist (though I never found proof of it anywhere)
Brian Kelly-Done a great job at Cincy. Would ND take a coach on that low of a stage, again?
I just made a smoothy in our new deluxe margaritta machine by Margarittaville. It was pretty awesome. Fresh bananas, fresh strawberries, lowfat vanilla yogurt, and finely shaved ice. Yummy.
I also think if I were ND I'd see whether Gruden wanted back in the NFL or wanted to take a swing at college.
FSJ-I agree he is building a winner at UA, but it will never be as big, nationally, as ND. It is bigaround the southeast, but not followed everywhere else like ND.
Jay, do you mean to tell me that you are not out there doing everything you can to ensure Auburn has a winning football team? Shame on you. You waist your time reporting the news instead of making it like good reporters...wait a minute...never mind.
^^ directed at THT.
i agree wtc...but
Saban is about control. ND will never turn over the keys to the program like UA has.
sorry 'bout that PF. I was distracted.
I'm ashamed.
now Michigan... I bet they would hire Satan...after giving RR one last shot. And who wouldn't want to take a job on same campus as the Clements Library? ;-)
Lane Kiffin's success at UT will make Gruden valuable if he wants into the college world.
ND and Brian Kelly make a lot of sense to me. That is the type of coach I can see headed there, not Myer or Saban. Now Saban to Michigan might be an interesting thought, but I just don't see it happening. There are not many schools willing to sell their souls like Bama. Saban has a pretty sweet deal.
As for Tommy West, his rant very much reminds me of a contractor we fired here in Columbia. After being fired he decided to call all of his co-workers and ask why he was fired and have a heart felt discussion. I don't think he appreciated the responses he received.
So JayG loves him some Petrino?
As for Peterson, I think you have to mention Patterson from TCU in the same breath as him.
Chip Kelly...still too early to tell.
All of this is in my very humble opinion of course.
I think Petrino is a great coach..
My one concern about him is what type of defense he will field.
With that said I can only imagine where Auburn would be right now had he got the job a few years ago.
I think Petrino's a great offensive coach. Seems like a decent recruiter. We'll see where Arkansas is in four or five years (if Petrino stays that long), though.
He DOES need a defense to go with that offense, otherwise he will never surpass anything Nutt did. This ain't the Big East where he can get away with not having a good defense.
Hi, Hotties. I have nothing of substance to add. I've enjoyed catching up though. Just popped in to say hello. Having fun in Nashville Christmas shopping with my daughter.
BTW,
I don't like Petrino. I didn't like him when he was at Auburn. Don't know why, but I don't get good vibes from him.
Cincy...he's not a pleasant man.
Touchdown Jesus + Satan = Armafreakingeddon.
Would a good Catholic school really hire the Anti-Christ?
I agree with Cincy... Petrino is slimy.
If some reason Chiz doesn't work out (and I'm pulling for him 100 percent), please don't refer to our next coach as "slimy."
Thank you.
I think "slimy" is reserved for Petrino and Willis.
Petrino would do great things at Auburn..
Like Jet, I think I could get over the slime factor.
I could be wrong, but I don't think Petrino will ever be the guy for Auburn. Even if the job was available, which I hope it's not for several years, do we want a guy who's only going to hang around for 2-3 years?
I'd not be thrilled to have Petrino. I'd probably go to the airport and yell mean things at him.
I could continue the conversation, but I'll leave at this ... Quoting that captain of industry, Nathan Arizona ...
"We ain't runnin' a daisy farm."
BEAT THE DOGS. WAR CHIZ!
Comment rephrased...
What has Petrino done to really get everybody's hearts all aflutter?
Went to a BCS bowl in the Big East, you say?
Others who have done so: Rich Rod, Walt Harris.
E-Bro, he made a flashy exit in Atlanta. That's something, right?
Petrino is 8-11 in the SEC...
Who is Walt Harris?
I'll be glad to have the Petrino debate at another time ... I'm focused on abusing the Hairy Dawgs.
PF...exactly (as emphasizes my point).
He was the Pitt head coach a few years back. Made it to the Fiesta Bowl back in 2004 and got pantsed by Meyer's Utah team.
So wrong, Jet...so wrong.
That was the point of my question. To emphasize your point. Now you ruined it.
PF...you'll have to excuse my friend. He's a little slow.
Though I did think it was legit that someone would not know who Walt Harris is. I think he might be in the witness protection program. Or he might be the QB's coach and passing game coordinator at Akron.
Same difference, right?
Walt Harris was the same idiot that would decline interest in the Alabama job each time it came open when he wasn't even a candidate.
There was a point?
Let's rip through Georgia just like Sherman.
I will not emulate Sherman, you piece of Yankee scum.
Dude, I've never held a permanent residence more than 12 miles from downtown Gump.
As for kicking @$$ and taking names, I'm for emulating those that do it and do it well.
Either way, you love Sherman. Yankee scum.
I'm all for destroying the dawgs, though.
Sherman didn't do Atlanta justice. I wish he had sown it with salt like the Romans at Carthage.
No, I admire his ability.
Personally, I'd like to dig a little deeper into history ... maybe make Tuscaloosa and Athens like Sodom and Gomorrah.
I'm not backing off of this. I will not tolerate love of Yankee scum.
BURN THE BULLDOGS!
If it helps, Sherman actually loved the South. He worked as a military professor (or something of that nature) at LSU.
I consider Sherman one of the worst human beings that ever lived. He's like fourth on my list.
Who's in your top 3?
Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Sherman
Chairman Mao would be disappointed. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Faker, you are forgetting one thing about Saban: he wants another championship.
If he goes 12-0 regular season at Notre Dame, he's in the title game. Guaranteed.
That is also true about Michigan.
I agree ND wouldn't likely give him the kind of total control he currently has at UA.
But Michigan might.
Don't think it hasn't crossed his mind that he could very well finish with two consecutive undefeated seasons and have absolutely nothing besides two "SEC West Champion" banners hanging at Bryan-Dennehey Stadium to show for it.
You know what's surprising?
Ben Roethlisberger winning two Super Bowls before the age of 27. He's a solid, average quarterback, sure. But a two time Super Bowl champion? Surely you jest?
Freep..
You and I both know that Saban is going to win one at Alabama.
It's a matter of when.
Hmmm... I'd have to add Mao, Robespierre, Ceausescu, and Duvalier to make it an 8 way tie. And Stalin... definitely Stalin.
I'll also buy Athens and Tuscaloosa as Sodom and Gommorah, with Tuscaloosa playing the role of Sodom of course. I hope the Tigers get all Old Testament on their a$$e$.
Not if we have anything to do with it.
Ceausescu...most underrated dictator of all time?
He's 5th.
Vlad was pretty brutal, too. He invented kicker on a stick.
Sherman did a lot of bad things, but I don't think he's in the same class with Robespierre, Mao, Pol Pot, Amin at al.
He was just doin' the man's work. Those other guys were the man.
I don't know, Vlad is like a lot of ghastly men from the 15th century. He just happened to have Bram Stoker as a publicist.
Jay G, you're not a southerner. You wouldn't understand.
I jest, though. Of course Sherman wasn't that bad of a guy. I just hate what he did to a bunch of great buildings.
Old Nicolae was a pretty bad ass despot. He managed a 22 year reign with the worst human rights record in Eastern Europe, and that's saying something.
...and that Jet's a Yankee sympathizer. I thought he was a better man than that. Norm was right all along.
Even the Soviet Bloc wanted nothing to do with Ceausescu.
He definitely wasn't a pro-choice guy, either.
I think Rich Thomas is about to soil himself on the weather tonight.
I lived in Memphis all my life. You consider it cold, Jay G? It only snowed there enough for us to play in it twice my entire tenure there.
Jet .....study what Sherman unecessarily did to the south and you would hate too. He went way beyond removing the ability to fight ....he went way beyond trying to break the will to fight ....he systematically burned, killed, starved and stripped innocent families of every shred of their existence ...unless they were a Mason.
There are merits to total warfare, Hoopie. How do you feel about dropping the A-bomb in WWII?
Oh boy..
Now the discussion is gonna get good.
I've done quite a bit of study on that subject, Michael (began a fascination with the Enola Gay in 2nd grade), and can say that the bombs make me sad. Sure, it got the job done, but at what cost. There was nothing honorable about what happened.
Mike Smith going after D Hall, though, I can support! All hail Smitty!
How many American lives would have been lost in an invasion of Japan?
I think that has to be considered with any discussion of the Atomic Bomb.
add "generations of" to that statement, FSJ, because it went deeper than the people who died those two days.
Here's my thing with the Atomic Bomb. Why not find a legit military target to bomb instead of the civilian depots of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
I know this is "old news" but the angle is so crazy that I'm posting this for anyone who wants to get pissed off some more about that interception-that-wasn't-an-interception-apparently-sec-refs-are-(insert choice word here).
http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/messagetopic.asp?p=16237585
And yes, I know the replay booth didn't have this angle, but I thought the video CBS showed proved it to begin with so whatevs. Good thing I'm not an LSU fan.
GEORGIA SUCKS, always and forever.
Welcome to the HABOTN?
Where's the credibility in complaining about other nations/rogue states having wmd's when we are the only country to have ever used them?
Depending on who you believe, some say more lives were saved by dropping the bombs than were taken by them.
But, as a person, if someone says "By killing this innocent family with this knife, you can save 2 other innocent families who would otherwise die," would you be able to pull it off? Women and children screaming as you do it?
Ethics on HABOTN!
It's kinda like Bama getting all of the calls and saying the refs are awesome and people shouldn't be mean to them.
If I am not mistaken Truman warned the Japanese on July 26, 1945 that they must surrender. They were rejected, which led to the bombs being dropped.
no, I wouldn't Michael, because there is no guarantee of death until death happens...unless it was my family, then I'd probably do the wrong thing and take a life to save one I cherish. It would most certainly be wrong, though.
Surrender or we'll kill your civilians. Great. That makes it all better, FSJ. They were warned.
Tell us how the refs screwed Bama more than LSU again.
Yeah sorry, long time lurker. Native Georgian. When Shula was at Bama and they were terrible all the time and we beat them every year, I had more hate for UGA than UA-T. Saban has seen to it that that is no longer the case :)
Unless it's Georgia week of course!
Not sure what Bama and LSU have to do with WWII but have at it Peter.
Yeah, that's the crux of the argument there, Michael. Kurt Vonnegut served in the military in WW2, but was haunted all his life by the fire bombing of Dresden he witnessed as a POW that killed tens of thousands of innocent Germans.
A historical military figure once said, "All war is hell." It truly is.
BTW, Sherman said it.
Welcome Anna Kathryn..
I'm FSJ, the resident bammer.
From a 1946 report from the Federal Council of Churches entitled "Atomic Warfare and the Christian Faith":
"As American Christians, we are deeply penitent for the irresponsible use already made of the atomic bomb. We are agreed that, whatever be one's judgment of the war in principle, the surprise bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are morally indefensible."
I'm with E-Bro on this one.
That's what I surmised. My whole family are Bammers so I'm used to your kind. :)
I'm going to bed sad and pissed off after a reflecting on all of the terrible crimes against humanity over the years. G'night hotties.
Goodnight Peter.
Wow didn't expect to check in on the HABOTN one last time before hitting the hay to find a deep ethical discussion about WMD's.
I only know one thing I am 100% in favor of bombing Athens with the WMD known as Ben Tate this weekend.
Despite my distaste for Sherman, I think he would have made one hell of a football coach.
There are positive things in human history to dwell on...
The Civil Rights Movement.
The end of Apartheid.
Auburn winning a national championship in 1957.
I think Shula would have been a terrible general.
LOL E-Bro..
Shula was a REMF if ever there was one.
if AU somehow plays fresno state in a bowl game, we will have played every D1 team with a bulldog mascot this season.
ts ida has been a pain in my rear all day to present time. if anyone else wants some rain, we have plenty.
I'm pretty well covered myself Chip.
Raining in NE Alabama too Chip
Tar Heel Tiger said...
great carousel pic!
Word of advice: don't let the SEC officials see it, they'll rule it's not a pic.
Tar Heel, I LOVE it!
Good morning, Hotties.
good morning from east tennessee.
WOW. What a discussion last night. Just read through the posts. Here is what I surmize:
Dictators get results, good or bad they get results. In the long it seems all the results are bad.
Ida ... whew ... not one, but 2 landfalls in Alabama -- first at Dauphin Island, then over the bay to Fairhope.
Bring your bailin' buckets.
I agree...if offered the Memphis job, Malzahn would take it. He knows his offense will tear through whatever teams Memphis plays. And history shows, the best way to become an HC is to be an HC.
Would suck for us though. I'm not sure anyone on our staff knows the O well enough yet to work out the kinks in the SEC.
That's the thing I'm most impressed about...under Tubs, we never seemed to be able to iron out offensive problems during the season. But Malzahn has been tweaking ever since our loss to Ark...and I think those losses will actually pay dividends in the next two games.
Since I missed the discussion last night;
Sherman was just carrying out Lincoln's policy of bringing the horror of war to southern civilians.
Cities were considered legitimate targets by both sides in WWII. The only difference the bomb made was that we went from 1000 planes to level a city to 1.
Does he (Trooper) look like a head coach to you?
No. He doesn't even LOOK like an Assistant HC...but it is what it is...
Hopefully CGM will stay at AU long enough to build a resume that will land him a HC job at a top school.
Boom Boom Muschamp has modified his sideline personna to the point that he looks like a HC. Trooper could morph accordingly if desired.
Not that I know anything, but I don't think Malzahn has been a coordinator long enough to be a HC. Apparently, things are a mess at Memphis. Why would he want that?
Does anyone know why I have to create an account every time I try to sign in?
I'm here just in time to flip this thing.
Sherman vs A bomb ...while there arre similarities in the 2, there are also many differences in thise situations.
The A bomb killed/maimed 250k people, yet saved 1,000,000 American and 4,000,000 Japanese lives.
Sherman killed 50k people and shortened the war enough to save 100k people.
Good morning everyone, exciting news here in the Nooga as the Mocs game vs the Tide will be televised.
Ah yes, new page.
