Auburn 63, Furman 31

Hey everyone. Well, that wasn't an interesting game.

Auburn was totally dominating the game to lengths I haven't seen since 2004. Then the second-team defense goes in the game and Furman kinda-sorta built a kinda-sorta challenge.

I mean, the Paladins scored four touchdowns during the second half. That Auburn defense wasn't the Auburn defense you know.

Anyway, here's what jumped out at me:
  • Furman was 0-for-7 on third down during the first half.

  • Furman had zero rushing yards in the first half.

  • Auburn had 30 first downs to Furman's 15.

  • Auburn finished with 655 yards.

  • Anthony Gulley was Auburn's leading rusher with 77 yards (on five carries).

QUOTIN'
  • Furman head coach Bobby Lamb: ``We obviously could not stop Auburn in
the first half, their pace of the offense gave us trouble even though we
worked on it all week in practice. They were hitting on all cylinders
and they were very difficult to defend. Chris Todd was making so many
great decisions, getting the ball spread around and going 17-for-18 with
only one incomplete pass. They made some big plays."

  • Auburn WR/TB/CB Anthony Gulley: ``“I did not play with the offense all week, I played with the defense. Coach told me after the half that he was going to put me on offense, so I ran a little reverse and then he put me in the backfield. It was great to score a touchdown, especially since it was the first of my career.”

  • TB Ben Tate: ``“It was a great day. We came out and did what we were supposed to do. We really played well as a team. Everybody had their head in the game and there’s nothing else to say. We did what we had to do.”

  • S Daren Bates: ``"It's big for us. We need everyone to step up for Zac (Etheridge). People are going to have to fill in some places. It's good to be able to have some more people with that experience with the two games left on our schedule. They will be tough matchups for us."

  • Bates on painting "ZAC" on his left arm: ``I just wanted to … show him that I love him and I still want to be out there with him."

  • D'Angelo Benton, who caught six balls on Saturday: ``I feel like nobody can stop me now. I've got my confidence all the way up now so you all are going to see a lot from me."

  • Ted Rüf on Gulley and Auburn's defensive needs: ``We're searching everywhere. We're looking under every rock, every nook and cranny, trying to find some more guys. We're just so thin right now. He's an emergency guy. It looked like he did some good things out there."

Really bad call on the int by the bug eyed officiating crew..LSU got hosed. The SEC is the most hypocritical organization in college football. Fining coaches for speaking out against the obvious is absurd.

In the first quarter, OU and Nebraska combined for 22 total yards. Nebraska's touchdown came after a INT return to OU's 1 yard line.

Blogger FSJ said...

Oh please..it was a bang bang play.

Not enough evidence on the replay to overturn.

If Danielson is saying I think I saw dirt..then u know it was a bang bang play.

Besides we got hosed on the first drive when the replay booth was down. It evens out.

They had nine yards in the fourth quarter...They weren't going to score.

Not only do I believe the LSU player picked the ball off, I think it would have been a pick in the NFL.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The end zone view clearly showed it was an INT.
NEITHER on field official saw the play, they ran up to each other and both looked lost.
Ref 1: I missed it.
Ref 2: Me too.
Ref 1: who put money in your pocket this week?
Ref 2: REC. How bout you?
Ref 1: CBSlive
Ref 2: It was obviously incomplete.
Ref 1: That's what I saw.

8:08 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FSJ, I'll agree it wasn't as clear cut as some other calls missed this year by the SEC, but I thought it was definitely an INT and it should have been overturned.

Eddie said that even Eli Gold said on the radio he thought it was INT, for what that is worth anyway.

As ready as we'll ever be, ms. n-it.

I feel better about our team than I have in several weeks. All the way back to MSU, actually.

Now, whether that means we have a shot against UGa and Bama remains to be seen. . .

BTW, Faker, congrats. Solid performance from what I saw.

Ingram prolly won't win the Heisman, but it won't be because he is undeserving.

wtc, I like watching college football too much not to watch them play, especially if it's a top ten matchup.

I'm not trying to take the pi$$ out of FSJ or anything. I think Bama wins that game either way. I just think it should have been an int. I'd think that even it wasn't Bama.

Ingram did well tonight, but I think the bulk of the credit goes to the o-line tonight. Ingram, Richardson, it didn't matter. They were both gashing LSU's front seven in the second half.

With eyes that freaking big he sure does call a ton of plays in a ton of games wrong..what is troubling is that most of the bad calls seem to be in favor of the top two teams in the sec..That was a potential game changing play and they got the call wrong. I don't care what the "call on the field" was.

I dunno, FSJ. Surprised me too. Both teams seemed determined not to run in the first half.

I was shocked when in the first half on your field goal drive, given McElroy's struggles in the red zone, y'all called three straight passing plays as soon as you got in the red zone.

Blogger Jet said...

When I doubt the officiating, it's a problem. I saw two things. It doesn't meant happened this way, but this is what I think I saw: One, two unsure officials decide to make a call they know will be reviewed in favor of the fair-haired team giving them an inherent advantage in review, and two, I saw a replay official use an even higher standard than I've seen in other games this year to uphold a call. Was LSU going to win this game? No. But gracious sakes alive, the SEC officials keep looking inept at best and crooked at worst.

FSJ - You ask I provide.

On the Hoof: Allen is a tall, rangy athlete with long arms and a frame that can easily hold another 20 pounds. Has the appearance of a hybrid safety/outside linebacker and may remind some people of a young Deon Grant.
Needs Improvement: Could use some added muscle mass, which will help him become a more physical deterrent in the secondary. Could also improve on speed just a bit.
Most Impressive: Covers a ton of acreage in the secondary like a smooth jungle cat, and he has the hands to change the game in an instant. Allen is also a very versatile athlete and could play on either side of the ball.
Conclusion: It would be shocking if he didn't play meaningful time as a true freshman. He doesn’t lack confidence and is very coachable.

the basics--
-bama beat lsu handily
- it was an INT, but it would not have mattered.
- the refs did miss a few calls against bama, but again, overall, it would not have mattered
- furman was awful ( i just watched some of the espn360 replay)
- javhid best may actually die tonight; espn reports that when he landed, the reason his arms went stiff was because the brain lost contact with the body
- we will beat UGA
-we will be 8-4, possible Jan. 1 bowl if we play competitively with UA
-it is hard to believe AU only has 2 games left in reg. season
- UA/TX should be tied for No. 1
- if RR finished 5-7 or 6-6, UM will give him 1 more year. after that, if he does not win 8+ next year, he will be gone

Can't remember when, offhand, but I'm fairly certain of it.

BTW, Oklahoma is now the best 5-4 team in the country. Wonder if they'll still be in the top 25 tomorrow?

USC survives ASU, however.

PPL will likely be the punt returner. You have to stick with your decisions this late in the season. There is no more time to experiment.

Just got around to watching the Breeders Cup Championship. Zenyatta was awesome. Jay G thinks she's better than Rachel Alexandra. He's a horse guy.

Spiller had 300 total yards... just sayin

Steve, if the return game was just not very productive, I would agree.

Putting the ball on the ground seems to be a good reason to keep looking for the right guy to me. It's not like PPL is making big plays to offset the fumbles.

Sorry I missed everyone so far today...

Steve,

Just because it's late in the season doesn't mean you pull someone who hasn't been effective and at times been a negative for the team.

I've given up on gaining yardage in the punt game, I just want someone who can catch the ball...if not, then don't have a return and send all 11 after the punter every time.

I vote for going back to Gulley as the punt returner. He was on a lot shorter leash than PPL. Didn't he just drop one punt before he got yanked?

Spiller had a great night..

Glad to see others jumping on the Spiller bandwagon I've been touting for a few weeks.

I've said it before. Whether it's receiving, running, or returning kicks, the guy is good for at least one 50+ yard touchdown a game.

The fact that Clemson has 3 losses means he probably doesn't really have a chance to win, but I think he should be in New York. Them making it to the ACC Title game would help.

If Tebow or Ingram has a good SEC championship game and wins, I think one of them will get the Heisman.

Morning all.

Just a few notes:

McCoy wins the Heisman. He is the third of the big 3 (Tebow/Bradford)so it is his turn.

Spiller tough but not on a team with enough hype.

After watching AU play all season, I can hinestly say, there is big step down from the top 2 teams in the conference to everyone else. We click sometimes, but when we don't it is awful.

Good morning Hotties, we had a gorgeous day on the Plains yesterday, not football weather but AUsome.
I was on row 61 in the northeast corner and the Eagle ( Ican't keep up with the names) almost came right over my left shoulder (beautiful). This put me in a perfect postion on the two catches that should have been intercepted but were caught. In the second half one on the 1 yard line and the other for a touchdown for Furman. Michael and wtc must have been playing cornerback on those plays.
Fun day and I enjoyed being there.

Conspiracy Theorists Might Be on to Something

Good read Luv. It wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game, but the officials should have gotten that call right.

When they lost their starting QB and running back, they stopped moving the ball. And when their CB went out, Jones got his long TD run. They had a backup in who over pursued that pass like Eltoro.

Let's get those dogs! It's Georgia week. They are also coming off an easy game.

Great articles Luv. My reaoning for believing the conspiracy theories is simple. If its just bad officiating then why have the officials in these big games not made a bad call against the higher ranked team. It seems to me that a bad official will make bad calls against both teams not just one. The fact that they have all favored the undefeated team obviously is suspect.

Great articles, Luv. Thanks for the links.

The good thing about the situation is these articles were written by national publication writers who reach an audience nation-wide. It seems obvious to everyone except the Bama and UF fans that something fishy looks to be happening.

Slive is fining coaches for stating what is clear to everyone else.
