Demond Washington collects

Hey everyone. Your favorite return man has been named the SEC's Special Teams Player of the Week.

Here is the bulletin straight from SEC headquarters, though his hometown (Tallassee) has been shanked:

DEMOND WASHINGTON

Defensive Back/Return Specialist
5-9 • 185 • Junior
Tallassee, Fla. (HS/Miss. Gulf Coast CC)

• Washington accounted for a school record 202 kickoff return yards and 229 total return yards for Auburn in a 31-24 loss at Georgia.

• Following a Georgia TD early in the fourth quarter, Washington returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 24-24. The return was the sixth longest in school history.

• The 202 kickoff return yards and the 229 total return yards were both the fourth most in SEC single-game history.

• His 40.4 kickoff return average (5 KOR) is the second-best in SEC history for a single game (min. 4 returns).

TommyD,

Here's an only in Prattville, AL moment for you. Your story about the three chocolate fountains reminded me of it. The brother of one of my best friends was getting married 6 or 7 years ago. The family was from... let's just say it's a suburb of Prattville. The reception was held at an old antebellum home on the edge of town that evening. They did the big white tent out back and the whole place was lit by candles.

The food was served in the front rooms of the house. The first tip off should have been that the groom's cake was in the shape of an 8 point buck.

When I moved into the next room, I see what appears to be three chocolate fountains spread out around the room. I went to the first one and dipped some cookies and fruit into the chocolate. I moved around the room and noticed that there were chicken fingers on the table with the other 2 fountains. WTH? But I'll try anything once, so I moseyed on over to check it out.

You can imagine my dismay when I got close enough to the fountains to discover that they were barbecue sauce and ranch dressing fountains. If that Klassy with a capital K, I don't know what is.

In 2002 I thought we had no hope in this game. We all know how that turned out. So anything can happen.

However last year I thought we had no hope either...and we all know how that turned out as well.

7:21 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

What really gets me is I was nervous going into the UGA game. I thought that, as usual, they would have one of their best games because they were playing Auburn. Then Auburn came out guns a'blazin' in the first quarter and I got all excited. Then, after the first quarter, what I thought originally turned out to be correct.

7:30 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- I had about 10x more hope in 2002 than this years game. Most times.

Ok, I've gone back and looked at the history of the Iron Bowl. There has only been 2 times that an Auburn team has knocked off an undefeated Bama. 1972 & 1989. Let's see, the "Amazin's" who had only lost once to LSU that season and 89 SEC Co-Champion Auburn Tigers who lost twice that season. Sorry, this team just doesn't have that makeup to make the upset happen. I will show up and pull for our beloved Tigers, but I refuse to get bent out of shape when we lose, because that is what is 99.99% sure is going to happen.

7:40 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

Eddie, I agree. I wasn't so upset about the loss the UGA. Auburn was still better this season than anyone had thought prior to.

7:42 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Eddie - o ye of little faith. It's only 99% sure. You need to up your confidence level by 1000%

7:48 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Luv- Absolutely agree. This year has done wonders in my opinion in establishing a solid base from which to build on while being able to sell recruits on the benefit of playing at Auburn. This staff is having growing pains, as ever staff, but I am highly impressed. Offense is ten thousand times better than last season and this is with mainly the same players that finished almost last in the nation in offense last season. Defense needs players and will get them and be improved. This team is on the up tick. I have no doubt about that. It is truly a great time to be an Auburn Tiger, but I really can't think of many times that aren't. I still bleed blue and orange to the core and I hope we show up and play hard in the Iron Bowl!

7:48 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Sorry, THT, confidence level is staying put at about .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% that we win this game.

7:49 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

I'm in the no-hope crowd for this game. AU struggles to stop the rush, Bama loves to run teams out of the stadium.

UAT is much stronger on the OL and DL. Bama's 2nd string defense is probably stronger than AU's starting 11 at this point in the season.

If the O-Line struggles in pass-blocking, this game could be very ugly. I don't take it as a good sign when the Bama fans here are trying to convince the Auburn fans it will be a tough game.

7:49 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

you are right, Eddie. This team's defense isn't remotely comparable to the '72 and '89 defenses. I think our 1% hinges on the possibility of the Tide's two-deep chart waking up that morning with swine flu and bubonic plague.

7:51 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

THT- I can agree with you there. With that said, it will still be fun to root on the Tigers, even if I have to evacuate my section due to them trying to take it over since it is right next to their section. That is the only thing I truly dread about the game.

7:55 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I thought we'd win 7 or 8 before the season started, so I should be happy with that, but the way we lost the UGA, Ark & KY games that makes it more difficult to deal with.

I do think we are heading in the right direction, but I agree this isn't 1989, that defense isn't walking through the door.

Also it's not 1972 or 1989 in that it's not the end of an era. I think it's more like 1981 or 1999 where it's the start of something better.

Sensi,

I think that our chances to win an Iron Bowl in the next five years, not including this year, are excellent. However, some things have to happen. We must start to getting the better in state recruits and I think that we will. We must continue to go after the blue chip players no matter who else is after them. We must have continuity on our coaching staff, that is , if one of our current coaches leave, we must replace him with a coach that is his equal or better. I think that most of this has already started to happen and if we continue the trend, the Iron Bowl may again take on more significance than the SEC Championship game.

Marks and Poweres would have contributed and at least two of the 3 kicked off would have seem significant playing time. I think that woul dhave made a big difference. Doesn't mean we win the IB but makes big difference in the outcome of others, IMO.

But you play with the hand you are dealt and you move on. I like that our staff has not used any of those things referenced above as an excuse. You just suck it up and go play and represent your school as best as you can. SOmetimes the other team is just better.

Agree Hoopie. Just a bad spot to be in this year, but it looks bright for the future.

Time to get busy for at least 2 hours before lunch.

FSJ-I got two on the 30 yard line. You can steal them for $800 a piece.

Lol wtc..

I'll take my chances with the scalpers on game day.

Thanks for thinking of me. :-)

Eddie - you really have lost your mind

JGT - UA-T at #1? Let me be the first Horned Frog fan to say...
It's people like you who have lessened my love for college football.

But you've increased my hate for UA-T which, according to all the known laws of the Universe, was impossible.

So, we're even.

I'll sell you my ticket for half that FSJ, only $400 and it's next door to all your family :)!

But you're still a great Hottie.

Hating Bama will never effect the outcome of the IB.

Hating Bama serves to cleanes oneself of the deleterious effects borne from the inevitable encounters with Bammers. Once cleansed, the good that is Auburn can flow more freely.

These Bammer encounters are more severe for our Auburn Family residing in the State of Alabama than elsewhere (Bammers don't get out much). It is incumbent on us folks from outside the state to support our instate Auburn family and fuel as much cleansing hate as possible.

May the Hate be with You

Folks ...it's time for an intervention. I know where Eddie's neighborhood is. There's about 400 homes in there, but if all of us Ga. Hotties ban together we can find him.

an intervention sounds painful, which reminds me of my dental appointment.

Why are my teeth falling apart? I have no doubt that it's UA-T's fault. So I hate UA-T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that y'all were watching the Auburn game Saturday, but Mark Barron made one of the best deflections of a pass in the end zone that I have ever seen...Here's a pic.

Eddie...

Sadly for MSU the pass fell harmlessly to the ground.

I saw that play. Sure, it was a good play, but you could tell that bama player is an idiot. You could just tell, ya know?

Anyone else hate the game being on T-Day weekend?

I like it the way it was. I hate having to wait the additional week.

10:24 AM
Blogger michael said...

Indeed, Harrison. Idiots are embarrassing. I have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to idiots. I mean, not literally. It's not like I actually wrote out a policy for my dealings with idiots. But you know, as a figure of speech, yeah, I have a zero tolerance policy. But maybe I should make an actual policy... it would make me a lot more consistent I'm sure.

Having lived through 0 - 9 where we had little to no chance of winning and we didn't. I must say that this small down turn is bad but not critical. We may not win on what used to be black Friday, before the infidels changed it, our star is shinning brightly. You young people can not imagine how desperate a feeling it was by the 7 8, and 9th year. Hold on the "Troop's" are coming.

Bro, it has to be this way now with 12 games, otherwise we're playing 12 games without a break. So as long as we're playing 12 games a year, I'm all for the IB on T-Day weekend.

10:35 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I'm for eliminating the meaningless 12th game and moving it back like it used to be.

I'm for 13 weeks of Hate without a break. 14 in the good years.

10:41 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Bro...I'm with you there. Never have liked the 12th game. I know it's so teams will play a tougher non-conference schedule, but I don't see why we can't play Clemson next year and only two other cupcakes.

It's all about the Benjamins, sadly.

10:41 AM
Blogger Storm said...

I may be crazy but I am starting to think we will win the game. Don't really know how. My wife has called all four losses this year. Even we we went up 14 Saturday she said we were going to get beat. Well all year she has said we will win the iron bowl. Well mabey shes onto something. Atleast she gives ME hope. If we get killed like most think well we still had a great year and have something to look forward to! It would be nice to hear the Chant 'OVERRATED" with about two mins left in the game.

10:55 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

We still owe them one for 1984.

11:04 AM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Yeah, E-Bro. I'm all for a "Wrong-way Ingram" play. 1984 was my first in-person IB. It really sucked going in almost certain we were going to win, but then leaving with a loss. I hope the Bammers get to have that same feeling this year!

11:10 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We owe them for 1985 as well.

84 and 85 were two years we had no business losing to them.

11:36 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

The 85 Bama team was very talented.

Probably the most even game of the series, IMO.

11:38 AM
Blogger michael said...

That '85 team stunk, FSJ.

11:40 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I feel like we kind of evened things out for 85 with 97 and Jaret Holmes, assist of course going to Ed Scissum (who in all seriousness I did feel bad for though I was happy he did what he did).

11:46 AM
Blogger IV said...

Digger,

I also lived through the 0-10 1950 season. Thank goodness for Coach Jordon and he only went 5 and 5 his first year. The 12th game is all about M-O-N-E-Y. However,I kind of like the 12 game season as it gives us more football to be absorbed in. I think that waiting until after the 11th game to have your off week is not a good thing for the players both mentally and physically.

11:47 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Noooo...

The 85 team had Bennett, Thomas, Al Bell, Jelks, Humphrey, Jon Hand.

They were strong...And Auburn had a great team too.

By far the best game I've seen between the two teams.

11:48 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

There are a few that nag at me..

1982, 1986, 1993, 1995, & 2002.

11:50 AM
Blogger Harrison said...

FSJ- 1997 doesnt bother you any?

11:51 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FSJ...there are 39 of them that nag at me...

11:51 AM
Blogger michael said...

I don't feel nearly as giddy as I should watching the highlights of the 97 game. They show Scissum on the sidelines after the kick. So sad.

11:52 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Harrison,

Good catch..It only bothers me because of how it ended. I didn't expect us to have a chance at all in the game.

11:53 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The presidents refuse a playoff because it adds to many weeks to the season, but they had no qualms about adding a 12th game to the season.

I'm all for 11 games and 16 team playoff. I know I've seen that somewhere, can't seem to place it.

11:53 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

82-86 is probably the golden age of the Iron Bowl, IMO.

Each game was very close and won or lost with a great play.

11:54 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I feel, however, that we as Auburn and Alabama fans are owed a really good Iron Bowl. When was the last time we had one?

2006 and 2007 were decent I guess, but I feel like you have to go back to 1997 for the last truly great game in the Iron Bowl, and even that wasn't really a well-played game, just a dramatic one.

11:54 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Ok...somebody needs to work on making this thing flip...

11:54 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

1996 was an interesting one too E-Bro.

Alabama came out on fire and then couldn't do crap until the last drive.

11:55 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

One other thing..I don't know if my heart can take a really good Iron Bowl this year.

Let's start next year or the year after.

11:56 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

There will soon be 40 that nag at me. Assuming by nag you mean that it rips my heart out of my chest and sledgehammers it 40 times, then drops it on the railroad tracks for a few train passes, then crushes it to the size of a molecule of molybdenum. If thats what you mean, then yes, those losses nag at me.
