Rivals.com expert impressed with Auburn

Hey everyone. I'm working on a story about how Gene Chizik has changed Auburn during his 11 months on the job. I talked to several people today about that topic and I'm intrigued with some of the stuff I've learned.

It's one thing to be embedded like me. People who stand on the periphery see things from a different perspective. They bring up stuff I hadn't considered or re-affirm some things I think I know.

If that makes sense.

One of today's interviews was with Barton Simmons of Rivals.com, who focuses on recruiting throughout the Southeast and Texas.

Here's what he had to say about Auburn:
Q: What has been your impression of how Gene Chizik has changed Auburn's image in the recruiting world?
A: The way they've gone about it all -- they're clearly going after elite players in their region. They have the best of the best in their sights. Some people might say they're shooting for the stars, but I think it's going to pay off. It's already paying off. They're in the mix for a different level of recruit now. They're going after better guys and getting better guys.

Q: Like Michael Dyer?
A: Exactly. You didn't see Tuberville going after a guy like that unless he was in-state. Chizik and those guys went to Arkansas and got the best player in Arkansas. Same for Trovon Reed. They went to Louisiana and got the best player in Louisiana. People just don't do that with LSU down there.

Q: Simply getting Dyer and Trovon Reed committed ... is that a victory in an of itself?
A: Absolutely. I continue to hear kids say they're interested in Auburn. They've gotten themselves out there among these kids. They know about Auburn, what's happening at Auburn, who's going to Auburn. Guys like Dyer and Reed, it's like dominoes. Word gets around. Good players want to play with good players and that's what Chizik has done. He's created a reputation.

Q: Where does Auburn go from here?
A: There's still a lot of room and time for Auburn to get in with some big recruits. They're on several right now. This group is one to watch. Chizik has made recruiting an emphasis. They all work hard at it -- and that includes Chizik. They all work together to sell that idea of family. I've talked to kids who say they really liked talking to Chizik, said he relates really well with them. They're good at building relationships.

Q: What is your general thought of Auburn right now?
A: They have a sexy offense. Kids really respond to it. The defense -- recruits knows there is a chance to play right now. Auburn could be a sleeping giant. They're only two years out from being a challenger. If they keep recruiting like this, I'd say they're only a few years away from challenging again. It's a program that has really changed how people see them. They're a threat to some programs that probably didn't worry about Auburn before.

Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

My slow typing strikes again. I can only hope that my daughter will appreciate football tickets when she's a teenager. I am coaching her in that direction, but she did fall asleep during the UGA game. On the other hand, my son (who is only 8) made it all the way to the end and was appropriately bent about the outcome.

4:32 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Count Chocula ...

If your sweet almost teen-aged girl has yet to turn crazy, she will. It is utterly and completely unavoidable.

My daughter is sweet, caring, loving, and possesses all the characteristics that a father would want in a daughter.

But she has fits of craziness that is endemic to teen-aged girls. We deal with it and move on.

She has AU love and UAT hate ... even more than New Moon love, and so scoring a ticket to the game has extinguished the fires of devastation of not being able to go to the premiere.

Also making 2 A's on tests today helped.

4:33 PM
Blogger Jet said...

She will be a fine AU wife in the future.

My son, however, will be a bitter, angry man -- unless we win every game by 3 TDs.

He takes it worse than I do. This is the kid who I had to stop from returning an academic recruiting letter to UAT with many insulting things written upon it.

Since I jumped off the Lebo bandwagon last year, we started winning. I'm not sure what's happening now.

6:33 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

crappy arena can be ok if it's small (e.g. Cameron Indoor Stadium). It's when you combine cavernous with crappy that you get a caverappy arena, and that makes it extraordinarily difficult to sell your program.

I'm talking about the ability to play basketball. We apparently don't have it. If we played in the finest arena in the universe it wouldn't matter. We can't play.

6:46 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that's cause the real good players aren't at AU. Can a new arena entice them? I hope so, but I won't hold my breath. We had a couple of pretty good years after the current arena opened. I hated that rubber floor. Basketball should be played on wood.

To Jet and Choco: I have a soon-to-be teenage daughter of mine own (she'll hit the big 1-3 a few days after National Signing Day next Feb).

She was 'going out' (tweenage slang for 'going steady') with a boy who is a UGa fan. She was deeply disappointed in the outcome of this past Saturday's game.

Effective Sunday night, they were no longer 'going out'.

I'm quite pleased.

BTW, I asked her about Twilight: New Moon, and she said, "eh, I'll wait till it comes out on DVD and borrow it from one of my friends".

Did I mention how I was quite pleased?

7:31 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

We were never a "powerhouse" in men's b'ball.

We had about a 3 or 4 year stretch in the mid-to-late 80s where we were pretty good, and a couple of decent years in the late '90s.

AU under Lebo is pretty much par for the course. The only way we will ever make some noise is if we hire a charismatic, dynamic HC with a proven track record. Don't know if it's that important to the folks in charge to do that.

7:37 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FF...I'd take the charismatic, dynamic part and not worry about the proven HC ability.

Let's take a chance on a young guy that will bring some passion. Look at Bruce Pearl. He was a bit of a gamble given his coaching background, but he's generated some interest up there, even if it was always more than Auburn historically.

Let's just get somebody that can maybe excite the students or something. It'd be nice to generate some kind of home atmosphere on a consistent basis.

7:43 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Point taken, Michael.

I'd settle for a basketball program that was interesting and fun to watch. We had that at times under Smith and Ellis, although that was more a product of the talent we had on board than any great coaching ability.

I really should have brought this up earlier, but I assumed everyone already knew. Auburn is NOT a men's basketball school. As a matter of fact, we are about as far from a men's basketball school as you can get, with sports such as football, women's basketball, swimming, horseback riding, golf, recruiting, spring practice, and two-a-days all coming before men's basketball. It is what it is.

- Other five victories were against opponents with the following records: 5-5 (BCS team), 5-5 (BCS), 4-6 (BCS), 4-6 (CUSA), and 1-10 (Big Sky FCS)

- Have lost to every team they have faced that received any votes in the current AP poll

Jet, that first one was BS. You would've thought it was SEC officials trying to help their flagship programs.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Mount Charlie is definitely canned if he loses this game. 85% chance if he wins it...AD's don't block tracking on the University jet for no reason.

UConn in FG range with 35 seconds.

Bingo, Wake.

Can you believe how crappy they have been this year?

They're almost in John Blake territory.

Blogger Jet said...

Notre Dame will probably win in OT, and I will be disappointed.

OK is bowl eligible? Everyone goes to bowls. sheesh.

Freep, you left out the part about them being ranked #4 to start the year.

I'd like to dedicate this next one to Mount Charlie.

Blogger Jet said...

Danielson says something dumb ... "smart play by LSU to quick snap to beat the replay."

Yeah, they wouldn't want a replay that might give them the ball at the 20 instead of the one foot line.

You're better than that, Gary.

Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Snacks, I also left out the part about their HC earning $6 million last year.

5:16 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Which brings up an interesting question:

Stoops got his big payday for sticking around through the end of 2008, and this year's team tanked. . .he's an Iowa grad and a midwest guy, could he be thinking about ND?

I bet they would be interested in him. . .

5:18 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I agree Freep...

I think they take a run at Meyer and then Stoops takes the job after Meyer turns them down.

5:19 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

the paint on that end zone in Oxford looks mighty fine in HD. The paint guy needs a raise.

5:19 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I think the ND plane is in Tuscaloosa right now, will be in Gainesville late tonight, will make a stop in Dallas tomorrow late morning, Norman tomorrow afternoon, and Cincinnati tomorrow evening.

5:22 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Stoops is yesterday's news.

If I'm the Notre Dame AD, I check on Urban and Saban. If I get negative vibes, I hire Brian Kelly or Jim Harbaugh.

They need hunger.

5:23 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Wow, I was following ND-UConn on Gamecast, and they had ND win it 30-27. Put "FINAL" up there and everything.

Wasn't until the HOTTIEs set me straight that I realized the truth.

5:28 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Gamecast is run by a nerd in a basement room watching on TV...he doesn't know the college OT rules. I think his name is Tim. Don't quote me on that.

what a bone head move.

6:13 PM

Danielson is right..the original mistake was on 3rd down by not calling timeout quickly.

Well, Les Miles finally pays for one of his bonehead moves.

Houston Nutt is a goofball too.

6:14 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Wow.

In a battle between two idiot savant HCs, one of them had to figure out how to lose.

6:15 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Going backwards on 1st and 2nd down was hideous. Then not calling a timeout, sheesh.

Empty hat.

6:15 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

LOL..they wasted 17 seconds on third down.

6:16 PM
Blogger wtc said...

he had 26 seconds after the screen play ans didn't call To until 9 seconds left.

Houston Nutt may be a goofball, but he is one heck of a coach, although admittedly a little wacko.

sncaks-You are right. that field looks awesome in HD

6:16 PM

That was simply hilarious. Ole Miss kept trying to loose it, but LSU managed to out stupid them.

6:17 PM
Blogger michael said...

I normally like the CBS guys, but they are way wrong about trying to get the field goal team in with one second. They were most likely screwed whatever they tried, but they should have tried to go for the TD. Too hard to try to time a field goal snap like that.

Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

hotty freakin toddy baby

6:19 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I think as long as it took them to get lined up they had time to get them out there.

The kicker probably wouldn't have had time to mark off his distance from the spot but hell it was a 20 yard kick.

6:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't know what I would say if I were the coach of Ole Miss. Well, we kind of won, but we really stunk it up bad at the end. Can both teams just take an L for this one?

6:20 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Miles antics finally catch up to him

6:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think LSU is in decline. I don't see them being a power in the west in the near future.

6:21 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

unless the FG player can be spontaneous and just kick it from whatever position he ends up in after sprinting to the field....

6:22 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

As bad as Danielson has been this season, he was on his game there at the end.

Why the hell were they trying to throw deep when they had the ball 1-10 at the 30 with a minute to go and 2 timeouts?

6:22 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

LSU is undisciplined.

They have been De-Sabanized.

All the talent in the world. Wasted.

Les, here's your sign! ROFLMAO!!!

Oh! and I HATE UAT!!!

LSU will likely become what they have traditionally been, a talented underachieving team. Loosing Reed to us was just a part of it.

6:24 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

LSU should start talking to Coach Tubbs

6:37 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Oh, please let that happen.
