Rivals.com expert impressed with Auburn
Hey everyone. I'm working on a story about how Gene Chizik has changed Auburn during his 11 months on the job. I talked to several people today about that topic and I'm intrigued with some of the stuff I've learned.
It's one thing to be embedded like me. People who stand on the periphery see things from a different perspective. They bring up stuff I hadn't considered or re-affirm some things I think I know.
If that makes sense.
One of today's interviews was with Barton Simmons of Rivals.com, who focuses on recruiting throughout the Southeast and Texas.
Here's what he had to say about Auburn:
Q: What has been your impression of how Gene Chizik has changed Auburn's image in the recruiting world?
A: The way they've gone about it all -- they're clearly going after elite players in their region. They have the best of the best in their sights. Some people might say they're shooting for the stars, but I think it's going to pay off. It's already paying off. They're in the mix for a different level of recruit now. They're going after better guys and getting better guys.
Q: Like Michael Dyer?
A: Exactly. You didn't see Tuberville going after a guy like that unless he was in-state. Chizik and those guys went to Arkansas and got the best player in Arkansas. Same for Trovon Reed. They went to Louisiana and got the best player in Louisiana. People just don't do that with LSU down there.
Q: Simply getting Dyer and Trovon Reed committed ... is that a victory in an of itself?
A: Absolutely. I continue to hear kids say they're interested in Auburn. They've gotten themselves out there among these kids. They know about Auburn, what's happening at Auburn, who's going to Auburn. Guys like Dyer and Reed, it's like dominoes. Word gets around. Good players want to play with good players and that's what Chizik has done. He's created a reputation.
Q: Where does Auburn go from here?
A: There's still a lot of room and time for Auburn to get in with some big recruits. They're on several right now. This group is one to watch. Chizik has made recruiting an emphasis. They all work hard at it -- and that includes Chizik. They all work together to sell that idea of family. I've talked to kids who say they really liked talking to Chizik, said he relates really well with them. They're good at building relationships.
Q: What is your general thought of Auburn right now?
A: They have a sexy offense. Kids really respond to it. The defense -- recruits knows there is a chance to play right now. Auburn could be a sleeping giant. They're only two years out from being a challenger. If they keep recruiting like this, I'd say they're only a few years away from challenging again. It's a program that has really changed how people see them. They're a threat to some programs that probably didn't worry about Auburn before.

Well executed, Choco!
Well, it wasn't perfect, but I was a little worried about what the Eurasians might do. Speaking of whom, I think their leader needs to spell out "HATE UAT" with lighted goats.
Alright. Headed home to enjoy the rest of bye week hate. This time next week, I hope Auburn's ahead by 40, bammers will be headed for the exits, and our hate will have paid off.
Just realized that this time a week from today, my HATE will be emanating from section 45 of JH!
PF, we are on the same page today (and on the same page today). I'm outta here in 30 minutes or so, myself.
Five minutes until Puppet Hour.
Thank you.
That is all.
Jet, apparently everyone thought you meant that is all for the day.
I have just erased the New Moon problem.
you bought a BMW? or did you send stewardess to see the spirit in the sky?
Scored her a ticket to the game. All is well.
Jet, please share. I will have a teenage girl of my own in about a year and a half.
My slow typing strikes again. I can only hope that my daughter will appreciate football tickets when she's a teenager. I am coaching her in that direction, but she did fall asleep during the UGA game. On the other hand, my son (who is only 8) made it all the way to the end and was appropriately bent about the outcome.
Count Chocula ...
If your sweet almost teen-aged girl has yet to turn crazy, she will. It is utterly and completely unavoidable.
My daughter is sweet, caring, loving, and possesses all the characteristics that a father would want in a daughter.
But she has fits of craziness that is endemic to teen-aged girls. We deal with it and move on.
She has AU love and UAT hate ... even more than New Moon love, and so scoring a ticket to the game has extinguished the fires of devastation of not being able to go to the premiere.
Also making 2 A's on tests today helped.
She will be a fine AU wife in the future.
My son, however, will be a bitter, angry man -- unless we win every game by 3 TDs.
He takes it worse than I do. This is the kid who I had to stop from returning an academic recruiting letter to UAT with many insulting things written upon it.
PUPPET HOUR!!! AHHHH!!!
Sorry for missing my cues earlier fellas. I operate under pressure about as well as Chris Todd.
It wasn't your fault, Michael.
You got hit on the first one, and the second one was a miscommunication.
Ua-t cheats at everything, not just recruiting. I HATE UA-T. From the moment of conception to the end of time, I HATE UA-T.
WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
Thanks, Bro Jet. You really are an encourager. Except for when it comes to bammers, who deserve no encouragement.
bammers should be encouraged to do many things, such as shut up and stay home.
And to eat poop too.
as that well known saying goes, bammers are what they eat
wake,
I've been all over that since Sunday. Am I the chief encourager?
Hey THT, do you know what that means? That means that if they follow my advice and eat poop, then that means they are poop! Hey, awesome!!!
I hereby label PF the chief encourager for bammers
Michael, you shouldn't sound so surprised.
and I should get back to work :-(
Only 5 or 6 more hours. Thank goodness THTjr is DVRing Monk and White Collar for me.
FSJ,
Shut up!
Stay home!
and
Eat Poop!
that goes for you, too, random other bammer who shows up every once in a while.
Love the HATE!
Yeah, I'll bet you love poop too! You poop eater!
Oh, and good to hear from your FSJ.
FSJ - you seem too nice to hate. But I HATE UA-T!!! Hate it hate it hate it!!!
And I HATE UA-T!!!!
shut up bammer
I'm usually okay with FSJ. This week, though, he's more of a bammer than even Sensi. I hate bammers. So it goes.
p.s. Sensi, love ya
I've encouraged many Cousin Humpers to eat poop and cease respiration.
Bro Jet wins the politeness award for his ways with the cousin humpers.
Men "only" down 17 at halftime to Central Florida.
We are awful turrible horrible.
UCF up 41-24 at half. We didn't score a point the last ten minutes or so.
Lebo has had six years to stop the giant suck and can't do it. So, we reward him with a new arena.
Look for Utah State to upset Boise State tonight. Yea, I know it defies all logic, but it is the curse of my first pick every week.
Phred, can we get Lebo an ice cream cone? It seems only fair.
last night they said UNC has 6 players who are 6'9" or taller. I think they should share some of those fellas with AU.
I'm excited Friday night football doesn't start til 9:30. Hopefully, I'll be home in time for the 2nd half.
It defies all logic and natural order. Only thing I can figure - he has naked pictures of somebody.
and thank goodness it's not on that blue rug
only if they involve Michael's goats, Phred. Nake pictures alone buy an extra year, max.
Phred - I'm not sure Dean Smith or John Wooden could win with AU's current facilities. Now, Lebo better bring top talent and lots of wins into that new arena.
I'm a big fan of the blue rug. Sure, it gives me headaches and seizures like everyone else, but there's something magical about it.
I'm blue da ba dee da ba da
This comment has been removed by the author.
Brent Lane - that was a great post. Where did it go?
I've only had 48 oz of DC today. I'm going downstairs to get me one of those 20 oz bottles for the stretch run.
Since I jumped off the Lebo bandwagon last year, we started winning. I'm not sure what's happening now.
The guy has the poopiest luck of any coach I've seen. And for this season he plays in what may be the worst arena in major conference hoops.
crappy arena can be ok if it's small (e.g. Cameron Indoor Stadium). It's when you combine cavernous with crappy that you get a caverappy arena, and that makes it extraordinarily difficult to sell your program.
Larry Williams Jr. hit a three.
I'm talking about the ability to play basketball. We apparently don't have it. If we played in the finest arena in the universe it wouldn't matter. We can't play.
that's cause the real good players aren't at AU. Can a new arena entice them? I hope so, but I won't hold my breath. We had a couple of pretty good years after the current arena opened. I hated that rubber floor. Basketball should be played on wood.
I've got to quit piddling and focus on work :-(
I'd so much rather piddle.
But piddling or working, I'll be HATING UA-T!!!
Auburn only attempted 39 shots form three-point range.
Is that a lot?
To Jet and Choco: I have a soon-to-be teenage daughter of mine own (she'll hit the big 1-3 a few days after National Signing Day next Feb).
She was 'going out' (tweenage slang for 'going steady') with a boy who is a UGa fan. She was deeply disappointed in the outcome of this past Saturday's game.
Effective Sunday night, they were no longer 'going out'.
I'm quite pleased.
BTW, I asked her about Twilight: New Moon, and she said, "eh, I'll wait till it comes out on DVD and borrow it from one of my friends".
Did I mention how I was quite pleased?
I watched the Niagra game live. We did not work the ball inside a single time. Not once in the whole game. Nada.
To THT: ^^^^Here it is, and thanks!
(Note to the Confused: I was logged in under a Blogger psuedonym I usually reserve for political commentary. My apologies.)
Remember when Auburn was a powerhouse in SEC men's basketball?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Remember Crystal Clear Pepsi?
That stuff was awesome and mind blowing at the same time...to a 10 year old version of me anyway.
It was a narrow, 10-point loss.
We were never a "powerhouse" in men's b'ball.
We had about a 3 or 4 year stretch in the mid-to-late 80s where we were pretty good, and a couple of decent years in the late '90s.
AU under Lebo is pretty much par for the course. The only way we will ever make some noise is if we hire a charismatic, dynamic HC with a proven track record. Don't know if it's that important to the folks in charge to do that.
FF...I'd take the charismatic, dynamic part and not worry about the proven HC ability.
Let's take a chance on a young guy that will bring some passion. Look at Bruce Pearl. He was a bit of a gamble given his coaching background, but he's generated some interest up there, even if it was always more than Auburn historically.
Let's just get somebody that can maybe excite the students or something. It'd be nice to generate some kind of home atmosphere on a consistent basis.
Point taken, Michael.
I'd settle for a basketball program that was interesting and fun to watch. We had that at times under Smith and Ellis, although that was more a product of the talent we had on board than any great coaching ability.
Whoops, was signed in under the wrong account. It happens.
Michael is E-Bro. Einhorn is Finkle. Finkle is Einhorn. Einhorn is a man! Oh, my god! Einhorn is a man?!
Yeah, Cliff could collect some talent, but coaching wasn't really his thing.
Imagine if the teams from 98-00 had some decent coaching. We were a different team at the end of the 98-99 season because Cliff lost the team and didn't even try to get them back.
Just checking in to let you all know...
I HATE UAT!!!!!!
That is all...
ME TOO, LUV!!!
Can we get rid of Lebo yet?
Big snacks!:
Random other Bammer? C'mon Man.
LOL, Mark.

Tubs is on the payroll and his specialty is "coaching up" lesser talent. Maybe AU should make him the hoops coach.
Two against one. I HATE UA-T!!! That's what's up!
How bout y'all?
Any chance it could be snowing in Logan UT? I wish I could go home and watch some football.
CRAP! major dump of work. I blame UA-T. I HATE UA-T!!!
Later, Hotties
Since PF hasn't jumped on it yet... I got this.
SHUT UP BAMMERS
Jay,
What do you think? Lebo has to go?
six years is a long run, some may want to give him one more year so he can recruit and play in the new arena but that would seven years with no ncaa appearances. losing to ucf does not look good for the future.
http://www.cfbstats.com/2009/team/37/index.html
Take a look at this stat page. Some are boring, but the interesting ones are closer to the bottom. red zone scoring for opponents being a glaring one.
I really should have brought this up earlier, but I assumed everyone already knew. Auburn is NOT a men's basketball school. As a matter of fact, we are about as far from a men's basketball school as you can get, with sports such as football, women's basketball, swimming, horseback riding, golf, recruiting, spring practice, and two-a-days all coming before men's basketball. It is what it is.
P.S. Throw baseball in there somewhere.
AU was 11-39 from 3 point range. good grief
AU had 31 personal fouls. Are you kidding me?
UCF had 40 free throw attempts and made 31.
AU was 11-17.
Those stats are your ball game right there. UCF had 20 more points on FTs than AU.
Utah State and Boise tied at 14 last in the first half.
This team can't shoot worth a crap. They shot 38% from the field versus 52% for UCF.
I have only 3 words for that:
Pit ti ful.
Don't forget the curse. Boise State is cursed. I picked them in pickem.
As for mormons, we need more of them. They are like cryptonite to Saban. We need more mormons.
I still don't believe Boise is a state, but they are starting to assert themselves.
Off topic: What a loser Jesse Jackson is. He asid Artur Davis (candidate for governor in Al) can not vote against the health care bill (as he did) and be a black man.
Why do news people still think he is relevant.
Sweet dreams of UAT hate to the hotties!
By the way, umm, I was like just kidding, umm, about that Utah State beating Boise State thing. At the moment Boise State has them bent over their knee and are applying a thorough spanking.
Steve...no shame in taking a chance.
It was 14-14 at one point, so there's that.
I love the smell of HATE in the morning.
I have a dream that one day, down at Alabama, with its vicious bammers, with its coach having his lips dripping with the words of "honesty" and "physicality" -- one day right there in Alabama little Birmingham boys and Birmingham girls will be able to join hands with little Montgomery boys and Montgomer girls as sisters and brothers of hate towards UA-T.
I have a dream today!
That's an awesome dream, PF!
Good morning, PF, NoVa, and all other Hotties.
MrsTHT and I will be wandering in a westerly direction through southern Virginia today, heading towards Radford. Y'all have a great day, filled with AU love and UA-T hate!!!
WARRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
NoVa ...I too smell the hate and love it.
THT ....enjoy the drive. I imagine most of the leaves are gone, but should be a good day anyway.
PF ....I can picture you delivering that speech from the 2nd level patio of the new student center to the AU masses.
morning HATE from knoxvegas.
WDE.
300.
Morning Hotties, during football season a weekend without Auburn football is disfuctional period,
Another week of UA @ T hate is coming before THE game. Stay true to the task at hand Hate Bammer.
Hey everyone and WDE I need some help finding a place to park. I am not sure what time I will make it to the game Friday. I am thinking around 10.30 Does anyone know how to get any reserved parking so I do not have to worry about it?
Good morning, Hotties! Have a great Saturday!
I HATE UAT!!!!
WAR EAGLE!!
Storm, you'll probably only have success with reserved parking if you mark off a spot the night/day before. good luck.
A day late with my picks, so I'm already in the hole there. Oh well....I was falling fast anyway.
No Auburn football today makes me sad, but the guys really needed the rest. Since I have the family coming to my house for Thanksgiving, this will be a work weekend for me.
War Eagle, Beat Bama, Keep Hate Alive!
Is anyone going to be in the Loveliest Village for T-day (or HATE day-1)? Can someone recommend a good place to get a Turkey dinner?

NoVa,
I suggest AUHCC
Check out
Iron Bowl Thanksgiving
Hatin' on
Alabama
Trailer trash
Everyday
As of today, NuKeese Richardson will now be known as OldKeese Richardson. He should go down in SEC history as one of the quickest busts in SEC history.
Alabama against Chattanooga is televised? No way!!!
Thanks PF!
Good Morning from the hate capital of the world Pratvegas, Al. J-Z and I handle the bulk of the real hate, but it is enormous. WAR EAGLE!!!
Oddly enough, Chattanooga vs Alabama isn't televised in Chattanooga.
We are getting Ark/Miss State despite the program guide saying Chattanooga/Alabama.
Same in South Florida. They said "next up Alabama vs Chatanooga," I flipped, and came back to MS/Ark
IV...
Your hate is no match for me.. :-)
shut up bammer....and respect the geezers.
Harvard @ Yale on Versus (you, know, that network that plays the NHL and Tour de France) right now.
The game finally switched here to the Mocs/Tide game.
Here, too, for a second. Back to the other game.
Apparently, it's a widespread problem with the feed.
FSJ, just like a Bammer. Thanks for watching my back Big Snacks, I preciate it.
with FSJ's response, my hate hit another level, defcon 6.
Lunchtime!!!
You just gotta love these wacky Wolverines. They get rid of a coach that had won over 75% of his games and brought in Rich Rod. It is truly something special.
A pot of chili on the stove. Watching ball with ElTurbo. There are worse ways to spend a day.
Chili Dogs at my house for lunch. Yum, yum. I hate UAT. Yum, yum. WAR EAGLE!!!
Do we get either Seastrunk or Lattimore?
I'm thinking we get one of them and that each is watching what the other one does.
Just as long as we don't get Tate Forcier.
Ok...that is over...
BRING IT ON ORANGE AND BLUE HOTTIES!!!!
HATE IN FULL FORCE!
shut up bammer
Go away Bammer.
Abbie can stay however.
FSJ, I read your report on Abbie the other day and I am glad to hear that she is doing well. Almost as well as she will be doing when she is elected Miss Auburn.
Like Jay G said during Hatin', it took Nutt this long to realize McCluster is good? Awesome.
Could Clemson have uglier uniforms?
Yes. They could be wearing purple pants, too.
Les Miles: luckiest mofo of all time.
Not sure, but I think Danielson likes Patrick Peterson.
hate, hate, hate...just checkin'
The Hat is a Dumb@$$hat.
And so is Nutt.
rebs
Hola HOTTIEs.
Dang, ole JGT is really taking this "off week" stuff seriously. . .
For those of you AREN'T also taking the week off - a quiz.
Name this team:
- Currently 6-5 overall, 3-4 in their BCS Conference
- Only one of their six wins is over a team that is currently bowl eligible (a BCS team that is currently 6-5)
- Other five victories were against opponents with the following records: 5-5 (BCS team), 5-5 (BCS), 4-6 (BCS), 4-6 (CUSA), and 1-10 (Big Sky FCS)
- Have lost to every team they have faced that received any votes in the current AP poll
Any guesses?
Florida?
Bama?
TCU?
Cincinatti?
Boise State?
Notre Dame benefits from 2 holding penalties -- one nullifies first and goal, the other nullifies go ahead TD.
Oklamahoma (spelling error was on purpose)?
Jet, that first one was BS. You would've thought it was SEC officials trying to help their flagship programs.
Mount Charlie is definitely canned if he loses this game. 85% chance if he wins it...AD's don't block tracking on the University jet for no reason.
UConn in FG range with 35 seconds.
Bingo, Wake.
Can you believe how crappy they have been this year?
They're almost in John Blake territory.
Notre Dame will probably win in OT, and I will be disappointed.
OK is bowl eligible? Everyone goes to bowls. sheesh.
Freep, you left out the part about them being ranked #4 to start the year.
Goodbye, Charlie.
LOL...
Weiss = TOAST
I'd like to dedicate this next one to Mount Charlie.
"I'm leeeeaaavviinnngg onnn a jet planeeeeee..."
true, but Shut Up Bammer!
Danielson says something dumb ... "smart play by LSU to quick snap to beat the replay."
Yeah, they wouldn't want a replay that might give them the ball at the 20 instead of the one foot line.
You're better than that, Gary.
Snacks, I also left out the part about their HC earning $6 million last year.
Which brings up an interesting question:
Stoops got his big payday for sticking around through the end of 2008, and this year's team tanked. . .he's an Iowa grad and a midwest guy, could he be thinking about ND?
I bet they would be interested in him. . .
I agree Freep...
I think they take a run at Meyer and then Stoops takes the job after Meyer turns them down.
the paint on that end zone in Oxford looks mighty fine in HD. The paint guy needs a raise.
I think the ND plane is in Tuscaloosa right now, will be in Gainesville late tonight, will make a stop in Dallas tomorrow late morning, Norman tomorrow afternoon, and Cincinnati tomorrow evening.
Stoops is yesterday's news.
If I'm the Notre Dame AD, I check on Urban and Saban. If I get negative vibes, I hire Brian Kelly or Jim Harbaugh.
They need hunger.
Wow, I was following ND-UConn on Gamecast, and they had ND win it 30-27. Put "FINAL" up there and everything.
Wasn't until the HOTTIEs set me straight that I realized the truth.
Gamecast is run by a nerd in a basement room watching on TV...he doesn't know the college OT rules. I think his name is Tim. Don't quote me on that.

And this is why chasing points in the first half was stupid by the Rev. Nutt.
LMAO at Les Miles.
what a bone head move.
Danielson is right..the original mistake was on 3rd down by not calling timeout quickly.
Well, Les Miles finally pays for one of his bonehead moves.
Dumb@$$hat.
Houston Nutt is a goofball too.
Wow.
In a battle between two idiot savant HCs, one of them had to figure out how to lose.
Going backwards on 1st and 2nd down was hideous. Then not calling a timeout, sheesh.
Empty hat.
LOL..they wasted 17 seconds on third down.
he had 26 seconds after the screen play ans didn't call To until 9 seconds left.
Houston Nutt may be a goofball, but he is one heck of a coach, although admittedly a little wacko.
Hey, a Tuberville reference!
sncaks-You are right. that field looks awesome in HD
That was simply hilarious. Ole Miss kept trying to loose it, but LSU managed to out stupid them.
I normally like the CBS guys, but they are way wrong about trying to get the field goal team in with one second. They were most likely screwed whatever they tried, but they should have tried to go for the TD. Too hard to try to time a field goal snap like that.
hotty freakin toddy baby
I think as long as it took them to get lined up they had time to get them out there.
The kicker probably wouldn't have had time to mark off his distance from the spot but hell it was a 20 yard kick.
I don't know what I would say if I were the coach of Ole Miss. Well, we kind of won, but we really stunk it up bad at the end. Can both teams just take an L for this one?
Miles antics finally catch up to him
I think LSU is in decline. I don't see them being a power in the west in the near future.
unless the FG player can be spontaneous and just kick it from whatever position he ends up in after sprinting to the field....
As bad as Danielson has been this season, he was on his game there at the end.
Why the hell were they trying to throw deep when they had the ball 1-10 at the 30 with a minute to go and 2 timeouts?
LSU is undisciplined.
They have been De-Sabanized.
All the talent in the world. Wasted.
Les, here's your sign! ROFLMAO!!!
Oh! and I HATE UAT!!!
LSU will likely become what they have traditionally been, a talented underachieving team. Loosing Reed to us was just a part of it.
LSU should start talking to Coach Tubbs
Oh, please let that happen.
Anyone smell that?
Smells like. . .
Wait for it. . .
FLIP!
