THOUGHTS
*The SEC has a lot of really good LBs and DEs. It's shameful that guys like Eric Norwood, Chris Marve and Brandon Spikes aren't listed here, but you gotta make tough decisions.

*Anthony Dixon meant so much to his team. He's underrated.

*Shay Hodge didn't blow me away at any point, but his numbers are outstanding.

*Injured or not, AJ Green is a stud that worries the heck out of defensive coordinators.

Chad Bumphis from MSU was a stud as a freshmen as well

I would have eric berry.... He is to Tenn what Dixon is to MS State.

I think he is one of the best, if not THE best, football player in the NCAA today

3:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Good list Jay. Colin Peek is definitely one I would have included too.

I don't know about Ingram. He just isn't that terribly impressive to me.

Mallett at QB makes sense.

DL: You mean for D player of the year?

3:42 PM
Blogger Dear Leader said...

yes

3:42 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Rolando McClain is the best linebacker I've ever seen. Granted, I'm not that old ...

3:42 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Eric Berry is excellent, I have him on the first-team defense and I'm certain he'll be a unanimous pick.

He'll make millions.

This slight won't leave him sullen.

3:43 PM
Blogger Miller said...

No real arguments on either side...

Hard to not list Dexter McCluster somewhere thought...

And, as much of a contribution Arenas made in ST's for bama... I think Myron Lewis had a better year at DB...

3:43 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'd have to pick between Bumphis and Trent Richardson for the second freshman.

3:44 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Had McCalebb not gotten hurt, he'd have been the winner.

3:44 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I wish I could find a spot for McCluster. If it's between him and Cobb, though, I think I'd stick with Cobb. He was that team -- him and Locke.

3:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I was very impressed with how McClain handled the Tebow.

3:45 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

"*Anthony Dixon meant so much to his team. He's underrated."

Especially for your offensive player of the year.

3:46 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

What about Darvin Adams, he did lead the SEC in touchdowns?

3:46 PM
Blogger Miller said...

McCluster basically was the Ole Miss offense the second half of the year....
but, you can't bump Dixon... and he's not listed as a WR... it's reallya toss up between him and Cobb at UK... both are deserving...

3:46 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Norwood belongs, he was the heart and soul of the SC defense. He meant to that D what Dixon meant to Miss State's offense.

3:47 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Here you peeps go looking for confirmation Eddie Gran out at Tennessee

big hire for JIMBO

3:48 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Glad you put Mallet as your QB over Tebow.

3:48 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Good for Eddie Gran, get far away from Knoxville.

3:49 PM
Blogger Miller said...

You're right... Hodge was never a noticeable player... but his numbers are mindboggling....

3:49 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I really like Darvin, but he's not as good as Green. Period.

As far as Darvin vs. Hodge, the numbers are slightly in Hodge's favor.

Hodge: 63-1023, 8 TDs
Adams: 48-855, 10 TDs

3:49 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

He recruits Florida like no other, I think this is a huge hire for FSU

3:49 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Between MCCluster and Cobb.... I'd leave Cobb on the list as well...

3:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

If we were picking teams, I would take Dixon over Ingram. I would actually take Tate over Ingram too.

3:50 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Eric Norwood is the most obvious omission and ... I can't generate a reasonable argument to bump and of those three LBs.

McClain is just gross. Period.

Curran led the league in tackles and he's a bad man. Period.

So it's down to McCoy vs. Norwood. That's a tough call. It came down to this: Norwood ranks 27th in the league in tackles.

3:52 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Nobody is as good as Green, no doubt there.

Darvin seems to be more of a threat than Hodge, but Hodge's numbers are better than I thought.

3:52 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

We almost had Curran, until UGA offered him last minute

3:53 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

SteveFC - if there wasn't any AU vs UA-T involved, I'd definitely pick Ingram over Tate. But Anthony Dixon wins hands down over Ingram.

3:53 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Norwood is two spots ahead of Zac Etheridge in terms of tackles.

3:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I would have selected Norwood, but I do tend to favor high profile players on lower ranked teams.

3:54 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Norwood is a player who the RB's run from and it sets others up to make the tackles. He's in on every play even if he isn't credited with the tackle. I would put him over McCoy, but I can see the argument of McCoy over him.

I agree you can't take Curran or McClain out.

Curran is probably the most underrated player in the SEC the past two years.

3:54 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Starkville DUI task force also picks Dixon over Ingram and Tate.

3:55 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Hodge had 15 more receptions for 168 more yards and 2 less TD's. If Adams would have gotten 15 more receptions, would he have gotten 168 yards out of it? Numbers suggest so.

Yards/reception
Hodge - 16.2
Adams - 17.8

Receptions/TD
Hodge - 7.9
Adams - 4.8

After 5 weeks who would have thought Chris Todd wouldn't be in the discussion for All SEC QB?

3:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

In terms of the Heisman, I even would think McClain a better choice than Ingram, although it won't happen. I just ask myself this. If I could choose one player to be out of the lineup for Alabama for the Iron Bowl, which one would it be. My choice would be McClain.

3:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I would have never thought Todd would be in the discussion. I just felt he was the best option we had at QB.

3:58 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

So 5 weeks into the season you wouldn't have thought Todd would be in the discussion?

3:59 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

5 weeks into the season, he should have been into the discussion.

4:04 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It's just amazing how well the season started for Todd with a 12-1 TD:Int ratio after game 5 and averaging around 250 yards per game for it to end with him not even being in the top 5 SEC QB's.

4:06 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

To bad there isn't an award for Ironman (men) I would pick the entire Auburn Defense!
T guess Tate is (3) odd man out

4:08 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

So when was the last time Auburn finished last in the SEC in scoring D before this year?

Anyone know?

4:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd's #s looked good after 5 games. I think this was more a product of the system, than outstanding abilities. Early on, our receivers were wide open. Todd operated the system, made decisions and made most of the easy and some of the hard throws.

If I were picking an all-star team to play right now, I would pick Mallett for Qb.

4:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Digger,

Tate could be 4th behind Hardesty.

4:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If I'm Mallet, I'm not sure I'd even bother coming back to Arkansas.

4:11 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Todds #'s were terrible against SEC opponents

4:12 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

RK ..I suppose we could go look it up, but at the risk of stirring bad memories.

4:12 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Oh, I don't want to know, it was just more of a shock at seeing Auburn at the bottom of the conference in defensive stats.

4:13 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

jhag,

I posted Todd's stats vs the SEC and vs non-conference on here a week or so ago and it was amazing the difference.

4:14 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

I wonder if Chizik was calling the defense verse Bama, everything seemed different

4:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

If I was Mallet and not considered in the first 2 rounds of the draft, I would come back for more of Petrino's tutelage.

4:15 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Hoopie,

I agree, but I don't think there is any way that Mallet right now isn't a first or 2nd rounder.

4:16 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

That guy makes the throws that the NFL people drool over.

4:16 PM
Blogger Miller said...

hag....That was vintage Ted Roof defense vs. Bama... he'd been so conservative all season due to depth and fear of injuries... knowing that they would have a month to heal before a bowl game, and nothing to lose, he let it all hang out vs. bama....

with depth, the defense we saw vs bama will become more of the norm

4:17 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

jhag,

It was a lot of time spent preparing for one opponent and it was a game that this team really really wanted.

The week off helped the little injuries heal.

4:17 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

D.Miller said it better than me.

4:18 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Mallett could be the #1 pick if he comes back for another season... Right now, he's probably an early 2nd rounder

4:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

RK ....Seems that by the time we got to serious SEC play, there was a lot of film out there on us and our weaker talent had trouble executing when pressed. The play designs and our talent grew and adjusted. I consider that a good sign.

4:19 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Tate may be 4th in some peoples opinion but he is second or third in my opinion. McCluster could have some awesome numbers if NumbNutts had played him early.

4:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Could someone please post the stats of the SEC QB whose number looked better against SEC teams than other opponents?

4:21 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen when we get a team full of this coaching staff's players.

Actually, I'd just like to see us get a full team.

It was hard watching us at times when you knew the D was tired and doing their best but just couldn't get off the field.

4:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Just received a tweet from ESPN saying Arkansas is officially going to the liberty bowl to face East Carolina.

4:22 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mallet has the size and the arm.

Will he be more valuable/knowledgeble/skilled with another year of Petrino or a year as a pro rookie?

I don't follow the pros/drafts anymore, so can only ask questions.

4:23 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Steve,

It's not just looking better against non-conference, it's jeckyl and hyde.

In 8 games of SEC play this season Todd had 6 TD's and 5 INT's and averaged 135 yards passing per game.

In 4 games outside of the SEC Todd had 15 TD's and 1 INT and averaged 271 yards passing per game.

He had 9 more TD's and 4 less Int's and had 5 more total passing yards in 4 less games against non-conference teams.

4:23 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I agree on the full team thing RK. To me, great coaches find how to use the talent they have. We won't be bad talent wise and the depth issues will be largely cleared up, but the experience thing will likely be the biggest concern.

4:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

How quickly whoever will be the starting QB develops next year will be key to determining how good we are.

4:25 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve ..I'm sure that all SEC Qb #s were worse against SEC defenses.

If I remember correctly, RK's #s showed that Todd's dropped off severely. I think this was for the reasons I posted above.

4:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We need Eddie to go get the Rollison Express started. I sure hope he can get past this suspension quickly.

Someone help my memory ...did Aycock get in trouble also?

4:29 PM
Blogger Miller said...

steve.... who are you following on twitter to get that tweet?

4:29 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Teams adjusted to what we were doing and we don't have an answer yet.

That happened in the last two games vs UGA and Alabama. Once they adjusted on D, we didn't have an answer.

That's something to work on for next year.

4:29 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I just got one saying Ole Miss to the Cotton Bowl to play Okey State

of course... that's what we all suspected.

4:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

RK ..didn't see your re-posting of the #s. I remembered correctly.

4:30 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I couldn't find a stat on the number of fumbles that Todd had this year, but he got in a habit down the stretch of holding onto the ball too long.

4:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

According to Gus, we need versatile talent that can execute various packages without substitution in order to fully execute ...and at the fast pace.

If this is the right offense against the SEC, we will need to get players up to that level.

4:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd also looked too much for Adams and abandoned his checkoffs. It is understandable that he do so because sometimes it worked, but predictable and limiting.
