My final regular-season AP poll

Hey everyone. Top of the mornin' to you.

During a long, dark drive home from Atlanta, I pondered my poll. I now have produced my opinions into written form. It goes like this:

1. Alabama
2. Texas
3. TCU
4. Cincinnati
5. Boise State
6. Florida
7. Ohio State
8. Oregon
9. Georgia Tech
10. Virginia Tech
11. Iowa
12. Penn State
13. BYU
14. Nebraska
15. LSU
16. Oregon State
17. Miami Florida
18. Oklahoma State
19. Utah
20. West Virginia
21. Pittsburgh
22. Arizona
23. Stanford
24. Texas Tech
25. Houston

*I thought about putting TCU at No. 2, but it's hard to demote Texas after running the table in a more difficult conference. I'd rather see Alabama-TCU in Pasadena. Honestly, I don't think it's going to matter. Alabama, who I've had at No. 1 for seven weeks, is the best team and it's not close.

*I moved Iowa up again. You know it was tough for me. They're 10-2 and their body of work is more impressive than Penn State's.

*I refuse to drop Nebraska after their game against Texas. They won. I saw it.

You really do not deserve a vote in any poll.
Houston loses to East Carolina and you still have Houston at No. 25, but didn't move ECU into the poll?
Wisconsin wins 51-10 over a desperate Hawaii team needing a win for bowl eligibility, and it wasn't even close. It was almost like watching a state champion high school team play a bad JV team. Almost unfair how much better Wisconsin was.
Texas and Cincinnati needed luck, and in Texas' part, some help from the officials, to win. TCU has been the most dominant and impressive team all season long against a schedule that included wins over Virginia, at Clemson, and over ranked MWC foes Utah and BYU. You say you think TCU-Alabama would be a better game, and one you'd want to see, then vote that way.
Don't just vote the way you think people would expect you to vote.
Actually show some guts and vote the way you know you should vote.

Mr. Clements, Virginia, at Clemson, and over ranked MWC foes Utah and BYU are not impressive wins. Heck, Clempson got beat by South Carolina, one of the weaker SEC teams. Utah and BYU are from the MWC, as you state, a very weak conference. Your post is filled with stupidity.

Bear,

My buddies and I were discussing Nebraska's strategy on their last offensive drive. Their third down call was strictly playing for a FG. I would have tried to at least win the game with at least one attempt for a first down.

They left too much time....which combined with a stupid kickoff and horsecollar penalty allowed Texas to win.

Texas was dumb to have let the clock get that close. Yes, they came close to having a Les Miles moment. But the call was good. Nebraska lost. All they had to do was keep Texas out of field goal range and they didn't.

As for bad calls from the officials, it is a part of the game. If you can't stomach bad calls, you may want to become a chess fan.

Bear,

I have a theory that I have shared with a few hotties..

I think it is a combination of things..

1) There's just something about Alabama/Auburn at JHS. Outside of 2001 Auburn has ALWAYS played hard and for the most part well against us there. It's almost like the fans WILL the home team to victory.

2) Auburn finally had a chance to get some rest prior to the game.

3) Malzahn had an excellent gameplan to start with. After the first quarter we settled down on Defense with the exception of the one long throw.

4) I suspect that Alabama was a little flat for whatever reason. I could tell a big difference in looking at the teams before the game. Auburn seemed much more energized.

5) Auburn's defense has played better later in the season, IMO.

11:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Bear, I think UAT was looking past us. There were some of our standard plays that just worked too well for me to believe Bama was focused on us.

Also, I do believe we were much better against Bama than against LSU, Ark, Ky because of the extra week off. This team got worn down during the season. So many of the players on defense played way to many snaps. Stevens and Bynes deserve a lot of respect for what they did this season.

Yes, we are good. We are better than we appeared against LSU, Ark, and KY. But I do beleive we had an advantage over Bama because of their focus. After wall, we had four losses. They had to have their minds elsewhere.

That being said, this was one of the best prepared teams I have seen at Auburn. I look forward to seeing what ChizCo does next season. Depth will not be nearly as much of a program, but youth will be.

And an even more bizarre thought...How did TCU do in their conference championship game? Wait, they didn't play in a conference championship and you want to penalize Texas for winning their's? Ummm, right.

Well, maybe TCU ended their season against a quality opponent just as good as Nebraska. Let me look that one up.

Ah, here it is. They beat New Mexico in their season finally. Okay, who is better, New Mexico or Nebraska? They are both states, so they must be pretty even, huh.

12:01 PM

If there was 16 (and maybe in an 8) team playoff, yesterday's game would have counted only for seeding.

I hear echos of Hawaii and that Hawaii team that should have been in the national championship game. After all, they were undefeated. They got screwed, right? TCU, welcome to Hawaii's world. Be glad you probably won't face Florida in the Sugar Bowl. If you do, you may do nearly as well as Hawaii did against Georgia. Welcome to major college football.

Love,

Blogger Unknown said...

I would like to see a playoff, but one of the things I would like to see is strength of schedule come into play when deciding who gets in. In would discourage schools from scheduling the cupcakes.

I go by a computer ranking. According to the computer Texas has two wins over top 25 teams, Ok State and Nebraska. TCU has one, BYU. Texas has six wins over teams in the top 50. TCU had 3. Texas had a strength of schedule of 0.52, while TCU was at 0.45. The Nebraska game wasn't even figured in the Texas strength of schedule. TCU looses on every count.

Jet, I offer you Hawaii as proof that teams such as TCU are just not on the same level. They don't play the grueling schedule. Take a look at TCU's schedule. If Auburn played that schedule, how many games do you think we would loose? One? Two maybe? Basically TCU gets the nod because they beat one good team, BYU? Or possibly two, Utah? Nope, sorry. Thanks for playing.

12:40 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

You think Utah was a better team than Bama? You think Boise State was better than Oklahoma? Yes, they won those games, but those were exceptions rather than the rule. I would argue that the better team lost both of those games, and note that the Hawaii/Georgia game was not even close. There is no arguing that Hawaii was actually better.

You are fixated on Hawaii, which ran into the team that was probably the best at the end of the year. Simply, that Hawaii was a nice team but not ready for prime time.

TCU is a much superior team than that Hawaii team.I believe they are one of the best 4 in the nation and maybe even in the top 3. I'm sorry they won't get their chance. It's not their fault on the schedule -- that's league driven. You are right in that a playoff is the answer. Computer involvement, though, is not the path.

12:44 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I agree that a playoff is needed and the national championship is basically a joke, but TCU will get a chance to prove their point. Lets see who they end up playing and how they do.

Okay, you don't like Hawaii. Lets try Texas Tech. After all, they played a tougher schedule than TCU last season and even beat Texas. They got spanked by Ole Miss, the best, I mean, a team in the SEC.

TCU would likely match up better against Bama, but as for being more deserving of an NC, they are not. They are not more deserving than Texas. They are not more deserving than Boise State or Cincinnati. Heck, either of those two would be great opponents for them in a bowl game.

12:49 PM

SteveFC - Despite your EIGHT posts bashing TCU today (why don't you go for an even dozen so we can figure out what point you are trying to make), TCU is the best team in the country. 12:56 PM

Wake, I kind of agree. Although if you aren't in a major conference, add a couple of big games against teams from a major conference and prove your point. Play a Texas or Oklahoma. Play Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn. Play Arizona or USC. Heck, play Iowa, Wisconsin, or Penn State. Even Michigan State.

Sorry, but I see nothing on the TCU schedule that impresses me. The closest thing is a win over BYU. One game doesn't make a season. If you play a schedule of powder puffs, don't come looking for an NC and please don't brag about beating Virginia. I am going to pass out from laughing so hard.

TCU is a good team that is fun to watch. Their players are small and fast and they played a very easy schedule. I can't imagine those players holding up against an SEC type schedule for a whole season.

TCu barely beat Clemson at a point in the schedule when Clemson wasn't even playing good yet.

Texas got lucky against a tuff Nebraska team. Bama got lucky against Tennesee. Auburn go tlucky agsinst LSU in 2004. Teams playing in tuff conferences sometimes need (or make) this luck.

I agree with JGT that Texas deserves to be #2.

1:12 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Sounds like you need a church with a higher moral character, one that doesn't allow bammers.

TCU doesn't have any kind of argument. Their best out of conf game was against Clemson, which looks decent at first glance, except Clemson was in the middle of a 1-3 stretch including a loss to a PATHETIC Maryland team, not to mention the loss to a mid pack SEC team.

Sure BYU and Utah are decent teams, but def not enough to make up for the rest of their weak sauce schedule.

I like TCU, but they dont' deserve a shot at the championship.

On another note, they've had one top 50 recruiting class in the past 5 years. I know recruiting isn't everything, but Alabama, Texas, and even Cincy have much better athletes than TCU.

1:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Lets put in a different way. Auburn has more impressive wins this season than TCU.

1:14 PM

Why the fuss over scheduling? You do know they are made up a few years in advance. As JET states, yuo can't pick and chose which years you want to play the good teams or the easy teams. you play with waht you got. A lot of things depends on luck. It is what it is.

When you consider someone for a national championship you have to consider their entire body of work, not just one or two games. If we played a couple of good teams and a lot of cupcakes, we would have had a very good chance of being undefeated.

Compare victories over Utah and BYU with victories over West Virginia and Tennessee. I would call it pretty even. Go past 2 games and it gets even more ridiculous. Clempson? South Carolina beat Clempson. The ACC is an entertaining conference because there is a lot of parity, but they are far from being one of the top conferences.

I think we can all agree that the system for picking a nation champ is flawed.

I have read where TCU will play Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Both teams are undefeated. Will the winner of that game be any less deserving of the National Title? Based upon the current system, yes, but it is a shame they are given a chance to prove it on the field.

Also, Cincinnati will likely play Florida in the Sugar Bowl. Should Cincinnati win, should they be considered for the national title?

The national championship is really a myth.

Who was the national champ in 2004? USC. Was Auburn the better team? It is very possible, but we will never know. I do believe Auburn versus USC would have been much closer than that ridiculous Oklahoma game.

1:42 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

So, did Auburn deserve the snub in 2004?

I hope they keep their grubby hands off Trooper.

It was because we were Auburn not UF or Bama (bigger names)

1:44 PM

Auburn getting snubbed in 2004 was baffling. Oklahoma nearly lost several games. My memory is poor, but I believe Texas A&M nearly knocked them off.

1:45 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Dmiller they are losing 3 coaches as of now, Frank Wilson to LSU Eddie Gran to FSU and most likely Coach O to USC

hahahhahahaahahaa

Blogger Unknown said...

I am glad we don't seem to be loosing any coaches. That is one of the things that is tough about college football these days, keeping a staff together. Loosing coordinators was always Tuberville's biggest problem.

I am not terribly surprised we haven't lost any coaches so far, but after next season it could get interesting.

Sounds like Kiffy is having trouble keeping them happy.

1:57 PM

I really don't see Kiffikin being a big success in the SEC. He just doesn't have the personality I like to see in a head coach. While he will have some success, I doubt Tennessee will consistently be an SEC powerhouse, at least not anytime soon.

SteveFC, absolutely right. The system remains seriously flawed and the NC is still mythical. Which is why it is so easy for me to claim TCU is the best team in the country. TCU isn't given the opportunity to prove me wrong.

I've seen a lot more of Cincinnati and, even though they are undefeated, I would never claim they should be #1. No team that can't play defense would get my vote.

I agree on Cincinnati, THT. They weren't exactly impressive against Pittsburg.

I do think these teams deserve the chance to prove us right or wrong, though.

UNC beat Stanford 1-0. The Cardinal scored two goals, each negated by legitimate offsides calls.

(previously) Undefeated teams are 0-8 against UNC all-time in NCAA tournament.

I'm guessing nobody cares, so no more UNC soccer comments.

really? Because you just were saying that Utah wasn't the better team in the Sugar bowl last year, even though they had a very clear victory. Why? Because their conference and schedule doesn't get your seal of approval...since you've disparaged TCU's schedule, I can only assume you'd continue with that same argument. To say otherwise would be to contradict yourself.

I haven't bothered to change the channel yet. ESPN now showing some European soccer about which I care not.

But it does prove that soccer players would make terrible outfielders. Not only do they not know how to use their arms, but it amazes me how often they misjudge the soccer equivalent of "fly balls."

THT, you are actually one of the ones that was coming on strong at pickem. You had an excellent day yesterday.

I did well by coming in 3rd, 4th, or 5th most weeks. Yea, I think I may have won the week a couple of times. It just takes consistency.

The Auburn Insiders were also very tough competition.

2:30 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think I'd load my Top Ten with TCU, Tx, UA-T, UF, Boise St, Cinci, LSU, and some PAC10 teams. No Weak Ten(11) team could even get a sniff the top ten.

2:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By they way, anyone got any idea why USC turned into such a flop. Sure, the QB position explains some of it, but their defense was bad at times too. A large part of it may be changes in staff, but I don't follow them closely.

2:32 PM

I don't know about LSU. I considered them a bit overrated.

The Pac-10 agrees, and will be sending them to the Rose Bowl for proving it on the field...

2:36 PM

Terrence Cody and Antonio Coleman come to mind.

Offensively, Auburn's offensive line turned out much better, but I don't think any of them are deserving of all SEC honors.

2:37 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

JGT - I regret that I cannot, in good conscience, stump for my favorites. Unlike TCU, my favorites in this situation are not deserving.

2:37 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

PF, the PAC-10 sends a team to the Rose Bowl every year. That doesn't mean that team is deserving of a top 10 ranking, although I do think Oregon is. They looked horrible against Boise State early, but got much better as the season went on.

I think I would take a look at the MSU offensive line. Those guys had a heck of a running game this season.

3:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, I do think Dan Mullen should be in the running for coach of the year. MSU turned into a pretty darn good team in comparison to where they had been.

3:13 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

see, my response was to your comment "Oregon has a very good team. I think they are the best the PAC-10 has to offer." That comment didn't mention anything about them being top-10. Thanks for the history lesson, though. Without it, I might forget about how the Rose Bowl works.

3:14 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

They still won 5 games Steve, only one more than they won last year... I don't think so.

I think it has to be Saban or Chiz

3:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, but look at who they lost to and how close it was. They played a lot of teams much closer than anyone ever expected. They were respectable against teams like LSU, Florida, and Ole Nutt. Mullen achieved more than I thought he could with that team.

It is hard to not pick Saban. Like him or not, two undefeated SEC regular seasons in a row is impressive.

As for Chizik, we ended up doing about as good as I expected. Yes, he did a much better job than many people thought he would. I am not sure I would consider him the SEC coach of the year though. That Ark, LSY, KY stretch really hurt, especially KY.

3:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for flops, Ole Nutt has to win the award with Bobby Johnson very close behind.

3:19 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I agree Mullen did a pretty good job, but I think giving it to any coach who is no bowl eligible is a stretch. Also last year we beat MSU 3-2, this year we blew them out. That right there would point to Chiz over Mullen, although they seemed to improve over the season more than we did.

3:21 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

How can Bobby Johnson be considered a flop? Vandy wasn't expected to do anything.

3:23 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Bobby Johnson went to and won a bowl game last year, goin 4-4 in the SEC. He lost went 2-10 goin 0-8 in the SEC this year.

I probably don't give the Kentucky heach coach enough credit, but man, Kentucky.

3:31 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Yeah, and Vandy was predicted to finish last in the SEC east. Their season in 2008 was an anomaly and they lost key players and leaders on both sides of the ball.

Vandy is still Vandy no matter what they did in 2008. 2009 was just Vandy correcting itself.

3:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for ChizCo, remember that we weren't nearly as bad as we appeared last season. We were actually picked to win the west. It took one of the most incredibly inept coaching meltdowns to give us a loosing record.

3:34 PM
Blogger Miller said...

wow... I didn't expect the Skins to hang with the Saints today...
