Auburn women def. Alabama, 74-62

Hey everyone. We are live in Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum, where your Auburn Tigers are playing host to the Crimson Tide.

We'll also keep an eye on the men here. They're playing at Tennessee.

You may watch the men play. Their game is being televised on ESPN2 in high definition for those of you who have invested in that technology.

FINAL
Auburn wins, 74-62.

FOURTH TIMEOUT @ 2:49, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 68-50. Auburn has scored on each of its last six possessions. Four of them were extended because of strong offensive rebounding. I guess the Tigers were just waiting for the pressure to mount. Then they took command.

THIRD TIMEOUT @ 7:11, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 57-48. Blanche Alverson broke another Alabama run with a three. She's good at that. I still think Alabama is playing better ball right now. Nothing is coming smoothly for the Tigers. Alabama's man-to-man defense has been surprisingly good. It's obviously annoying Auburn.

SECOND TIMEOUT @ 11:49, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 52-38. Auburn is just grinding. Offense isn't coming easily, but they're making it happen.

FIRST TIMEOUT @ 16:21, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 47-34. Alabama is playing harder than Auburn, in my opinion, but the Tide cannot shoot. Period. Auburn stays in zone. Alabama has carte blanche to shoot from outside and it refuses. They keep driving. Offensive rebounding is giving them a chance.

HALFTIME
Auburn leads, 43-30. Alabama built a 9-0 run as halftime approached. A three from Blanche Alverson broke the surge. So that's where we are.

FOURTH TIMEOUT @ 3:59, 1st half
Auburn leads, 38-19. Auburn is staying it its 2-3 zone and making Alabama, a poor shooting team, shoot from outside. It's not going that well for the Tide. I'll say this -- Alabama is getting better quickly. Their 2006-07 team is the worst major-college team I've ever seen. At least their strategy makes sense now. They don't look lost. They're getting ripped here, obviously, but they have an idea.

THIRD TIMEOUT @ 7:58, 1st half
Auburn leads, 32-15. Auburn has cooled off a tad, but that doesn't matter. KeKe Carrier just "redirected" a weak shot from Alabama's Katie Hancock and, wow, it was an aggressive deal. Legal but aggressive. The Tigers are amped up.

SECOND TIMEOUT @ 11:38, 1st half
Auburn leads, 27-11. Carrier was laying it down early, then Alli Smalley became the focal point. She has scored seven points since that last time timeout -- two baseline drives and a three. It's ugly. Or pretty ... depending on your feelings.

FIRST TIMEOUT @ 14:47, 1st half
Auburn leads, 16-7. KeKe Carrier is unstoppable. She already has seven points.

I don't know if this has been said or not (I'm too mad to read all the posts), but I am fed up with our men's team. Lebo has to go. He gave up on the team tonight. He got out coached. While Pearl is fired up, Lebo is sitting on his hands. While Pearl gets in his guys faces for making mistakes, Lebo is sitting on his hands. While Pearl gets on the refs for bad calls, Lebo is sitting on his hads. Enough is Enough. 80+mil for a new arena will be wasted if they don't go out and find a good coach. I will not support Au men's basketball until changes are made.

The reason I think that Mike Anderson is a great fit at a school like Auburn...or Alabama for that matter is this....

You aren't going to recruit top notch "basketball players" to either school. You can recruit great athletes though and that is what Anderson's system thrives on.

Okay - when these kids get out of high school they have some skills, don't they. Who's supposed to be getting them to an even higher level? Is it the assistants? Is it Lebo? I mean from what y'all are writing it sounds as if they've forgotten everything they knew about bball before they got to Auburn.

The reason there's been a lot of chatter about Coleman the past few days is because he got bumped to a *****... I feel good about him sticking with AU.

Dixon is not a consideration... Like WTC said, Swilling or Russell will be back up plans to possibly get the final spot this year. We could bring in a total of 3 more DT's... a DE, an OG and another RB to finish off this class.

8:05 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jet, pay him enough money, he will come. It's cold up where he is now.

Here's the deal. Every good team and coach AU's had, they have had a personality, something that they are very good at. With Sonny Smith, it was rebounding. Gimmick defenses were also a thing of Sonny's. Lebo's teams aren't good at anything. Not defense, not shooting, not rebounding, run/gun, anything. They aren't even fundamentally sound, which is something you would have expected from a NC Alum.

The reason UA didn't hire him (and this is my opinion) is that there was some bad blood between him and a few on the UA BOT due to the way he left UAB.

Blogger FSJ said...

Anybody think that East Carolina would look at someone like Gus to take over there?

Or would Gus even consider them?

8:16 PM
Blogger Miller said...

For some reason, Thornton's HS coach has something against AU, he's been trying to push Thornton away from AU all season... it looks like he has finally succeeded. AU will put the full court press on the DT from Arky (Jones) this weekend, still look good with Whitaker, and keep an eye on DT Calvin Smith (Corey Lemonier's team mate and former UT commit).

Lemonier might try to visit AU in an unofficial capacity either this weekend or next weekend.

I haven't heard anything about Ambles yet... other than some speculation that he might follow Kiffin to USCw.

8:16 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Eddie-I hear his parents want him to go to UGA. They have all along. I think he goes there. We had our chance, but feel Whitaker is the BIG time player and will let Thornton and try for the Arky kid.

8:17 PM

8:19 PM
Blogger Miller said...

IF Auburn attempts, and succeeds in bring in Ambles (big, all caps, IF)...then that could pave the way for either Goodwin or Reed to possibly see playing time on both sides of the ball at WR and CB... both are phenomenal athletes that could excel at either position.

8:19 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ-I think everyone on the AU staff will stay for at least 3 years from the the start. Some say they all had some sort of agreement they would commit to staying, no matter what, to help Chizik rebuild this program, or take it to a new high (whatever you like) for the reward of more money than most asst coaches were paid.

With that said, what is a coaches word worth today?

8:21 PM

D. I haven't seen anything that even suggests that Ambles will even visit. Where are you hearing this?

8:39 PM

8:39 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

FSJ, wanna bet if Ambles gets to play catch with Saban using the Crystal football? My bet will be on Bama on this one, given the short time to impress. My only question, is the trophy sitting on about twenty cases of DR. Pepper from Walmart.

8:40 PM
Blogger Jet said...

FSJ ...

They're more likely to end up with Lovie Howell -- Mrs. Thurston Howell III.

8:40 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Vols are hoping for anybody except what is realistic.
IMO, Cutcliff wouldn't be a terrible choice... and Derek Dooley wouldn't be a bad hire either. Neither would be the sexy hire, and that is what UT wants. That is what their fans think they deserve.

8:41 PM

Jet...

I have wondered if they will make Saban's statue shorter than Bryant's...

Bryant was a tall man.

Saban..well he's not.

I hear Saban has requested the statue of him be the same saize as Stallings and Bryant, or none at all.

Au scored 1 (that's one) point in the last 6 1/2 minutes of the UT game. Score just six (6) two point goals. 18 total points in the second half. That's a new record for mediocrity.

My take on Ambles (or my moms take)- He is very good. Does Au need another WR? I think AU needs another DT or LB. But will take him. I would think if it is down to Au/UA, he goes to UA. He will be told how he will be the next JJones. Not sure that can honestly be a selling point, but that wil be the one that is used. Just my opinion.

I firmly believe in a balanced offense... run to set up the pass, pass to open up the run.
Yes, even with the studs at RB that UAT has... you have to throw the ball more, get the ball to Julio in space and the defense has to respect that option, which opens up the middle of the field more to run.... It is a delicate balance.

WTC, I asked that same question to someone lately. Not so much the RB's but look at UA's DB's. Ours look darn right malnourished in comparison. A lot of UAT players have some pretty stout pipes. Reminds me of Kevin Green at AU when I was there.

9:11 PM

I was surprised at UA's gameplan in the Texas game..

I thought Julio would play a big role..and I thought the TE would get a few passes.

Trying to be as objective as possible, if I was a WR, Bama is the last place I would go. Look at Adams numbers compared to JJ's numbers. Both of them came out of the 2008 class. Julio was the top ranked receiver Darvin was the 48th. Both put up similar numbers this year.

As a WR, I'm going to Auburn over Bama no questions asked.

I don't think Ambles will end up at AU... I don't think the AU coaches want him. Even if he wants to visit, I don't know if they even bring him in.

Been in meetings all night. How bad did UT beat us?

Don't remember the final Score, Phred. It was by about 30 if I remember correctly. Once it gets like that, there isn't much point in keeping score.

That sounds about right. I predict 50 for the UK game.

Found it. It was 81-55.

We're totally better than UT...they just scored more points. I don't understand either.

Connan or Leno?

I'll take Connan for $1000, Alex.

We were ahead 34-22 in the first half and lost 81-55. Over the last 25 minutes of the game, we scored 21 points, including only 18 in the second half.

Barf.

E-Bro,

What is the point of losing a close one? I always heard if you do something, do it well. We did it very well. We had our feel good moments in the first half and then died like cockroaches. Unusual game plan, but executed perfectly.

Kudos to the women for beating Bama!

Good morning, Hotties! It is FINALLY Friday!!!!

What is AU waiting for in regards to a new men's basketball coach? With the opening of a brand new, state-of-the-art facility, they need someone who is really going to sell that place and get potential recruits excited about the program. Sure the new colliseum can sell itself, BUT, players coming out of high school want to be on a winning program - or at least one that has that potential. With Lebo, they don't have that.

As I was glancing through last night's comments, I saw a discussion about Leno vs. Conan. I don't like either one of them. I used to occasionally watch Leno when he was on The Tonight Show and thought he was ok, but I have never liked Conan. And what's up with his hair???

I know this an Auburn blog, but with what is going in Haiti, I would be remiss if I didn't say that my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with are with all of them, including all the people going there to help with the disaster relief efforts. May God wrap His his arms around them and lift them up and help them through this.

TGIF Hotties!

Did I dream we had a 12 point lead against UT and then tanked it? Tell me it's a nightmare.

Thanks Lebo for all the memories. We have....one NIT Tourney. Wow, what a great coach you are!

For those of you going to the game Saturday:

Ltr from Jay Jacobs: "We will keep the momentum going by presenting the 2010 Outback Bowl trophy to Coach Chizik at halftime of our basketball game against No. 2 ranked Kentucky this Saturday at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. "

So the trophy he received in Tampa was a fake :)?

Not a bad idea to do that at halfitme this weekend since recruits will be in town to see the presentation.

I guess we should all show up at B-E-M Saturday. We will see one good basketball team, one trophy awarded, multiple football recruits and can impress those recruits by supporting our Bball team.

Now ....When are they gonna have that new sarcastic punctuation mark downloadable?

7:33 AM

Did I read somewhere that Saturday's game is sold out except for student tickets? Guess everyone wants to see Kentucky?

The Gump's Fox affiliate has the SEC sports package, but one of the NFL games is on at the same time.

Guess one is getting bumped to its affiliate Accuweather channel.

Also, I wonder if they will have to present the trophy multiple times only to have it reviewed each time.

Hoopie, if that was directed at me, I knew you were being sarcastic.

But, Hoopie, it would look good to the recruits if we supported Auburn athletics no matter how much they suck! LOL

I guess that should have said, "no matter how much the men's basketball team sucks."

Thanks Cinci. That's where I had to go to cope with the results of last thursday's game.

Cincy, the love that you and countless other alumni have for Auburn makes me really believe it is a special place.

Essentially the late night dispute is this...

Leno didn't want to give up the Tonight Show to begin with...

NBC gave Leno a 10:00 Eastern slot to appease him

Conan's ratings havent been good in that slot...

Leno's have been worse at 10:00 Eastern

Affiliates were ticked because that kills the lead in to the news.

NBC decides to can Leno's show but they for some reason (maybe Leno has incriminating pics or something) want to keep him around and push Conan later and give Leno the first thirty minutes after the news. Conan is fighting this as you would expect.

Now Conan and Leno are taking shots at each other in their monologues...

And Letterman smiles.

Blogger Seanzie said...

Personally, I prefer Conan but a lot of us whippersnappers do.

By the way, the Auburn Men last night were truly horrifying to watch. I can't believe I didn't change the channel...I just have too much of that Rah Rah War Eagle Homer in me to do so.

we looked great for 15 minutes last nite, then went flat. i did all i could hotties. i did predict a 23 point loss, though. if we had hit that 3 with 5 seconds to go i would've been dead on. :(

This just in...Neyland Stadium will be converted into a full time bone yard...the only football UT will play in the future is of the European variety. All current scholarship players are encourages to take a long look at the Lacrosse and Rugby club teams.

I heard Tub was ready to name Willis DC had Rhoads not accepted the position. This frightens me. Not sure how good of a position coach he was let alone DC.

They are talking about Tubbs possibly naming WIllis the DC when both were stil at AU if Rhoads had turned the DC offer down from Tubbs.

8:34 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

OK, I'm with ya now. Seanzie meant when Tubs was still at Auburn...

So, now who does UT go after?

8:37 AM
Blogger Ephemeral said...

Poor UT. The bammers are feeling gleeful that someone else has coaching search problems.

Speaking of glee, Letterman is rolling in it right now, and it is clear he doesn't have much use for Leno. Last night he said that Jay L. likes to be the center of attention (as if he and Conan don't).

Maybe the late night talk show has passed its day and is on the way out.
