It gets better

Hey everyone. So John Brice from VolQuest.com has posted an exclusive interview with Lane Kiffin, which includes this great exchange.

VQ: Will you miss not being able to needle Urban Meyer, or will you still needle him from the West Coast?

LK: No, it's good. Now I can do it and not get fined for it.

And some of you all don't like this guy? Come on.

I have seen death estimates in Haiti as much as over 100,000 people. The entire country is only about 9 million people. I do hope those reports are wrong and may have to think about sending some donations that way.

Mix a 7.0 earthquake on the Richter Scale with the Western Hemisphere's poorest country and you probably have the century's greatest tragedy ten years in.

Very sad indeed.

3:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, and they apparently afterward they had around 4 aftershocks that were 5.0 or higher. One was 5.9. They are only called aftershocks because they were preceded by a large quake. If they occurred by themselves, they would be called earthquakes.

It really kind of puts life into perspective and makes some of our complaints these days seem trivial.

Check that, I guess that the 2004 tsunami would be the biggest natural disaster-related tragedy of the 21st century.

But that happened over a wide swath of area. Here, we're talking about one country (and more or less one city) that is one of two on an island, and we could be seeing hundreds of thousands of dead.

Damn it.

You never want something like that to happen, but it only amplifies it when it's in an area like Haiti where they don't have much in the way of relief and supplies in normal situations, much less in a tragedy like this.

This is from footballscoop.com:

Texas Tech: We heard Mississippi State running backs coach Greg Knox has an offer to join Tuberville’s staff in Lubbock. James Willis (Alabama inside linebackers) is expected to be announced as the defensive coordinator.

So, how many more of the BBQ buddies will Tubs be offering a position to?

3:37 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Muschamp, to me, would be a better fit than Leach. There is a lot of bad press that Leach carries with him.

Getting Muschamp makes sense because he isn't currently a head coach so he wouldn't seriously impact another teams recruiting. Obviously Mack Brown thinks highly of him. I don't think he has the personality of a head coach, but in comparison to Kiffikin, he is Joe Paterno.

Luv, it doesn't suprise me for Tuberville to bring some of that staff. They were very successful and Knox was head or recruiting. My question would be what Knox's roll would be. As a receivers coach, he was a great recruiter. I can't imagine him coaching the Texas Tech receivers.

If I were Muschamp, I would sit where I am. Heck, he is already very well paid and has next to no pressure.

Someone earlier was hearing that it would be Leach. In terms of the name recognition it would make sense. In terms of his scheme and Tennessee, they are on opposite sides of the world. In terms of discipline and previous coaches, they are on the opposite sides of the world. If the Vols take Leach it is because he is the biggest name they can get on short notice.

Tuberville would fit the UT style of offense and fix their discipline problems, but why would he need the headaches?

Someone yesterday mentioned the head coaches at Air Force, TCU, and Boise State. Those types of coaches would be my best bet for UT.

How many SEC caps does the guy wanna wear?

7:12 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I think Champ might want to take over an SEC school that has a good, natural recruiting base. I know UT can recruit the best players in the country, but it's more work.

I was gonna say either LSU or UGA, which fits Jet's rationality.

Eddie, you could very well be correct. I don't know Muschamp personally, so I really couldn't say. Money just isn't something that drives my decision making these days, so I put a lesser priority on it. There are definitely people out there that are purely driven by money, regardless of their need.

7:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sponge, I can really say I know enough about Muschamp, but from what I saw of his personality, I didn't think him well suited to be a head coach. My impression could have been wrong or he could have matured a bit. He surely will be a head coach eventually, and it probably won't be another 5 years.

As for Chizik, he is almost the ideal in terms of being a CEO, although if anything, I consider him a bit overly conservative, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I am glad we got Chizik rather than Muschamp.

7:31 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Not that I thought Chizik was better when he was hired mind you. I just wasn't sold on Muschamp as a head coach at AU. Looking at it now, I like Chiziks demeanor and personality as a head coach. It will be interesting to watch Muschamp when he becomes one. By the way, if I'm Mushchamp, I take the UT job if offered. You can always bolt for Texas when that comes open. Bird in Hand...don't ya know.

Sponge, I wasn't exactly a Chizik fan when he was hired, although I wasn't against it either. I just thought we didn't know enough of the plan he presented to Jacobs. He was a wait and see in my book, but he won me over by the middle of the summer with the decision making he made.

7:33 PM

I say Chizik is much more than a CEO.

7:33 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I was President of the Boom Club. I think he's a star. Someone will be very fortunate to have him as a head coach. However, I will not pine for what I do not have.

Chizik has exceeded my expectations. I have no significant complaints. The bar, however, gets raised in Year 2. Call it the price of success. The good news is I believe he can meet those expectations.

7:35 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

For the Lebo haters, or at least those who think his time has come and gone, I have heard rumblings that he is done. Not going to open the new arena. Just what I'm hearing. That, barring a complete turnaround this year and that's not happening.

7:36 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Eddie, that is fair to say. Although I prefer a coach to be a CEO first, there is no doubt Chizik gets involved. I know I read where he was working with the special teams. I have no doubt he and Roof discussed the defensive situation a lot.

Chizik actually described what he does at one point. He said he kind of was able to step back and get a different perspective or something like that. While other coaches took care of their parts, he looked for where he saw areas for improvement. I probably am not describing this fairly. You would have to have seen the video.

7:37 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Eddie...top five list? What are we talking about here?

7:38 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Eddie. I don't really know the answer to this cause I haven't thought to ask those that would know, but is Chiz involved in the day to day on the field coaching. I thought he was. Not to the extent of Saban, but much more than Tubby? Do you know?

Jet, what is your criteria for success in year 2?

7:39 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Sponge- I'be been told that he gets involved and coaches. I've also seen such on the Auburn Everyday show. Tubs very rarely coached he was a CEO in every aspect. My opinion is that Chizik still coaches hard and defers the credit to the assistants as a good coach would do. Make no mistake, Chizik is the brains at Auburn.....not Luper, Taylor or Mazahn.

7:42 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jet, I'm not convinced Muschamp a star as a head coach. I certainly don't think he's a bust either. Just not convinced yet. Depends on the job he gets. I'd like to see him prove it at a place like Arkansas or Clemson, or a south Florida.

7:42 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

According to Knoxville radio, Muschamp turned down UTK in person.

7:43 PM

Eddie, that is pretty classy of him. I would consider it an insult to Tennessee if he didn't even listen to Tennessee. Like Tennessee or not, they are one of the better coaching positions.

7:45 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Eddie, that was my impression exactly. Don't think he takes over a position, but I'm sure he lets his coaches know what he wants. Not afraid to get involved if need by, as shown by his involvement in special teams mid year. Also, understand he took Trooper off the punt returners for a bit when things weren't going well.

I believe just about every major school does it.

I heard that earlier in the year and was surprised it wasn't against NCAA rules, but I am assuming UA new what they were doing. They may have not broken a rule, but they sure bent the crap out of some.

8:02 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Willis- who is he? Related to Benedict Arnold?

8:02 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- that is not against the rules. Happens all the time.

8:03 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Who did Tubbs use? I guy that was a former Major College Coordinator? I understand the deal. Grad assistants need to be new coaches with no experience. IMO.

8:04 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I see Kiffin was pumping his moral victory over UA.

I guess his moral 4th quarter victory over Auburn is next.

Good job Lane. Congrats.

Blogger Kathy said...

Whoever the reporter is that is asking questions regarding Coach O and recruit is giving Lane heck.

8:07 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

They are going to kick him out!

8:07 PM

Lane is talking in circles now.

LOL.

Kiffin = dirtbag But, he was at UT, so who cares...not me. Wonder if we can resurect the Orgeron song. Oyeoyeoyeeeee..Football

Tennesse ended up, what, 7-6? It wasn't a disaster for a first year, but it isn't something to brag about.

8:08 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Tubs used Dan Werner while I was there he was OC / QB coach at James Madison. He left Auburn and has winced served as OC at both Ole Miss and Miami. Not sure where he is now.

I remember Werner, but thought he was a paid consultant for the coaches, not an on the field guy.

Bowl games don't count. They were just dang glad to be there.

8:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Eddie, GAs can coach on the field, correct?

8:11 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

These media guys are all over his arse....

8:11 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Sponge- he was unpaid and he was coaching. Just like Andy Lutz. It happens. Not always in the GA role, but other ways.

8:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Kiffikin should have called me before the interview and I would have set him up. No matter what the question, he should just say "I took the cash".

8:13 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Is now a good time for him to rip his shirt off and challenge the media? Where's coach O.

8:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I thought there were pretty strict rules about who could actually coach on the field at practice.

8:14 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

I think there are FC. Now we know why we desparately need an INDOOR practice facility.

8:15 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- NCAA rules states that only 2 GA's and the 9 assistants ( I think I've got that right) and HC can be on the field coaching.

8:16 PM
Blogger Jet said...

My criteria for success is player improvement, no "bad" losses (think Kentucky), improvement in schemes, "coached up" players.

8:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Bwahahaha, that was excellent Sponge.

8:16 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

FSJ, wasn't bama playing tonight?

8:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks Eddie. I thought it was something like that.

Jet, that is a very reasonable criteria. Wins and losses depends upon the quality of the opponent and where the game is. Simply being well prepared is a better criteria, which is why the 5-6 record in 08 was misleading. We really didn't look that good.

8:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Ummmm, Idol just had to have security get a guy to leave. Now that's entertainment. I never have seen that before.

8:20 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jet, you don't go to bowl games cause your players look better prepared than they did last year. You could improve schemes, play, etc, but you still need to score more than the other guys. "Just Win Baby". I don't care if they look like Ned in the first Reader if they just win.

Who needs reality tv when you've got UT? They've definitely been entertaining the past 2 weeks!

Man .... it's wild times right now and unfortunately I'm too busy to keep up. Thankfully the HABOTN has dropped the contol rods and is melting the core keeping up with all of this..

Just ate dinner and caught up on the HABOTN. I spewed food several times. Enjoyed it, but gotta go.

BTW, the EDSBS stuff was hilarious also.

And I thought this year was going to be quiet time in coaching changes. Shows how little I know about CF. This has been one hellofa year ending bonanza.
Just happy Auburn is not part of it. It is fun to just sit back and watch the fireworks.

Blogger Jet said...

Sponge ...

If we're meeting my standards, we're probably winning 8-9-10 games.

If we develop the early entries, and we improve ourselves defensively, we can make the last game on the schedule meaningful.

I try to avoid sticking a number out there, but believe me, I'm about winning. Remember, Tubs had numbers from time to time.

(He said "Tubs." Heh heh heh)

8:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Not having stretches like we did against Arkansas, Kentucky, and LSU would be nice. Losing a game when you have yourself a chance to win is different. I can see Arkansas or LSU beating us, but we made it too easy for all 3.

8:41 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jet, you know i'm pullin your chain. I'll take 7 wins next year if one is at the crapstone. Normally, I wouldn't say that, but next year, I want to see Satan in a baaad mood.

Tigers Woods has checked himself into a sex addict clinic in South Africa for a six week program costing $5,000 a week. Anyone want to guess at what the treatment will be?

8:44 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

I just hope what I saw in some games were just due to number of quality players and not a brain fart by Gus. His play calling at times is not game winning and it must show improvement for us to move foward.

Clemson kicking the Tar out of the North Carolina heels.

8:44 PM

We definitely have plenty of room for improvement in special teams, but I do think the big difference we will see is defense. Look for Ted Roof to be much more creative with a full cast of characters.

North Caroline was overated and it is showing up as the season goes on.

They actually HAVE sex addiction clinics in South Africa?

8:46 PM

Yea, Sponge, I really wonder what it involves. Six weeks of shock therapy for $30,000? Tiger could have lots of fun.

And... are there different levels of sex addictions? Is one level more severe than another?
