AL.com is reporting but several sources say the deal is not final and UT is interviewing two more possibilities. Kelvin SUmlin and Kippy Brown are interviewing today.

1:42 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Al.com is reporting Dooley is the coach is what I should have said.

Tennessee: ESPN is now reporting that the reports may have jumped the gun and Kevin Sumlin is still in it. ESPN says the deal with Dooley is not yet finalized.

That is from Footballscoop.

Going back to the media and the coaching situation... That is what I like about Jay G. He doesn't post it until it's been confirmed, reaffirmed, double-checked and triple-checked. I can't believe that ESPN was reporting it without it being a done deal.

4. Many Hotties do not respect Jeff Lebo. Give DMiller props, he hated early and often.
5. The good news for Jay G in regard to Gannett's cheapitude: he doesn't have to cover AU hoops on the road.
6. It's a long weekend

I am still kind of baffled by Kiffikin's $800k buyout. Does anyone really believe that when USC decided to pursue him they looked at the $800k and wondered how in the world they could raise that much cash? Simply ridiculous.

Blogger Seanzie said...

Also, anything where wedding planners are going to be is a good place to sell some decorative chocolate. Baby/Wedding Showers, engagement parties, bachelorette parties...

3:21 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

We do all that stuff. I just had a bride, her maid-of-honor, and the bride's mom in here 10 or 15 minutes ago. I was just griping about the corporate stuff because that killed us this past Christmas (and the one before that). 2006 and 2007 were pretty decent. We're just in the same boat with most other folks in this economy. As a goofy friend of mine from my AU days used to say, "It's not just the heat, it's the damn economy."

3:26 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The corporate stuff will pick back up once companies quit worrying about penny pinching.

3:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Somehow getting business to sign up for custom treats in their waiting room seems pretty cool. I suppose it would depend upon the business, but it could catch on. Hi class hotels and little treats in the rooms might be another possibility.

3:28 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I agree with Steve on that one...makes for a nice presentation when hosting big wigs and such.

3:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There is a show on, I believe on discovery or A/E, that is a midget couple selling chocolate. I think it is the same channel Little People/Big World comes on. You might pick up some ideas watching it.

3:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

You would be amazed the amount of food big businesses buy for meetings and such. I work for a very large company and they are always posting something later in the day saying free such and such in the break room.

3:32 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I love free stuff in the break room, it makes my day.

3:33 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

I hope so. Hotels are a pretty good market for us, as are weddings, but everyone is pinching pennies now (and we're a "luxury" item). I'm pretty tied in with the wedding industry here in B'ham, but my product often gets whacked from a wedding budget at the last minute (when daddy realizes how much he has to pay for the dress, the venue, the band/dj, the food, etc.).

The only other thing I can think of is coming up with something very unique to get publicity. I was listening to a radio show one time. They were interviewing a lady who ran a store that I think made cakes. Somehow she got Oprah to mention her and suddenly should couldn't keep up with the demand.

3:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

should = she. Man, I hate my auto typing. Yea, spell it right, but it is the wrong word.

3:40 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

A unique idea would be if when some famous person was coming to town, have a chocolate customized for them waiting in their hotel room. It could be a big waste of time, but if one happened to mention it on TV, boom, publicity.

3:45 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Scott, maybe you could Finebaum to mention you on his show! LOL

3:46 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hmm, Finebaum chocolates. Chocolates with nothing of substance in the middle.

3:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hate to text it, but something that would attract the Bambi national championship throng would be good. There was a video of a huge line of people lined up to see a glass trophy on here the other day.

3:56 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

I doubt that Scott wants bammers lined up outside of his shop. That would definitely be bad for business.

3:58 PM

I was just checking out Scott Chocolate's website. He can make customized Valentine's Day candy. Any of you guys that might be in trouble might want to check it out.

3:59 PM

We really need to find some tiny third world nation to bomb. That always seems to help the economy.

4:58 PM
Blogger michael said...

SteveFC, I don't use the terminology "culldesack". I find it crude. I say "cove".

And the difference is that a cove is a dead end that has a big circle at the end of it, while a dead end is a cove without the circle. Got it? It's like the difference between a test tube and a beaker, kind of. I think.

Ambles coming to Auburn would be interesting because we already really have more receivers in this class that we need. The problem is that pretty much every one of them are quality recruits that you don't turn down.

5:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thornton not coming is bad news. Presently defensive tackle seems to be the most glaring area of weakness in this class.

5:07 PM

Kathy. I heard that earlier today and yesterday.

5:08 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

I'm starting to worry with all these changes that AU will take a hit on it's coaching staff before it's over.

5:11 PM

I know I'm biased, but how could Thornton not be interested in Auburn? Couldn't he come in and contribute right away?

5:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

cincy, I right away would be possible, although I do think we have 3 defensive tackles we like already. But if I remember correctly, two of our defensive tackles graduate after this next season, so that means we are down to one we like. I think there are a couple of others hanging around. Playing time in 2011 would seem wide open for a solid commit.

5:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

If we get Byran Jones and Jeff Whittaker, we should be okay.

5:17 PM

It seems amazing how quickly Seastrunk's stock has sunk. Some considered him the best back in the nation, but that image is changing. His stock is dropping quicker that Kiffikin t-shirt sales.

Cincy, I agree with you - why wouldn't Thornton want to go to Auburn?? Looking at the other schools he's interested in, Auburn is by far the best choice - with Penn State a close second!

5:22 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

I heard Thornton's high school coach and father are pushing him to GA.

5:25 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Oh my lord, I could only watch 4.5 minutes of that "pre-presser drama." Does that go on everywhere? I wanted to snatch that paper out of that guy's hand that kept tapping it on the table. Who is he anyway?

5:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks for the video, Kathy. Kiffikin obviously doesn't have the guts to face the media. That is sad for someone who is pretending to be head coach material. I would have understood if he had said I will give you 5 minutes or whatever, but the silly no cameras for this makes me lose respect for the guy.

5:37 PM

Blogger Unknown said...

On the lighter side, Jake Holland may steal Trotters position at first string hair.

5:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

FSJ, I considered that entire video kind of ridiculous. The paper guy should have just said here are the rules. If you can't obey these rules, there is the door. If you disobey these rules, you won't be entering that door again. Discussion over.

5:50 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I doubt the Malzahn rumors for now. I think Tommy Bowden and Major Applewhite are the front runners.

5:57 PM
Blogger wtc said...

So Tim Hawthorne decided to go to North Alabama to finish his football career. interesting.

6:00 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Look at it this way. At the end of next season or this season for that matter, I wouldn't blame Malzahn for taking a head coaching gig.

If he goes to Louisiana Tech and becomes a head coach, that seems like a longer term commitment, to me, unless you are Kiffikin.

Bottom line is that if we win the west next season, Malzahn will be a candidate at major schools. Even if we come close, when 9 or 10 regular season games, he will be a top name for any big time school looking for a coach.

Why in the world would he want to tie himself into Louisiana Tech? Even if they doubled his salary, it would likely end up costing him money in the end, if that is the concern.

6:01 PM

I'll add Gunter Brewer to the Louisiana Tech mix ... his dad coached there prior to going to Ole Miss.

Jay,
Do these things really go on behind the scenes? That was ridiculous.

Thanks, wtc. I am glad to here about Jones. He looks like a monster.

wtc, I need a grammar checker on here, so don't feel so bad:)

AU would love to get a yes from Jones this weekend. If they do, they are through with the DL.

I'm still with Steve on Malzahn. If he stays and proves that with the right players he is a great playcaller and Auburn ends up #2 in West (or, with my orange and blue glasses - #1) bigger, better programs may show interest.

BTW-I have heard from some folks over there that AU has now turned away a 5* RB and (2) 4* DBs. One wanted to announce on TV last Sat. at the Army game and called the coaches and was told not to. He doesn;t have an offer. I think the train may have left the station on him. He was offered at one time and did not take it, AU got two other DBs and the now has no room. When has this program turned away that kind of athlete.

wtc, I assume you mean we get Whittaker and Jones.

Yes Steve.

I can't really see them turning down a 5* runningback unless we have another 5* runnungback that hasn't announced yet.

Who was the paper tapper on the fiasco of the pre press conference?

Whoever he is I would fire his butt.....just because!!!!

That was totally aggravating. There evidently were no menopausal women in that room or he would have been dead meat.

By the way, I am assuming we turned down Seastrunk. After seeing what went on with USC, Carroll, and Kiffikin; Seastrunk probably became more interested in Auburn but was told sorry, there is no room. Go to Oregon.

wtc, does momma have anything to say about that Ambles? kid at UT? My guess is that we already have one more receiver committed than we were looking for. I can't see us adding another because the ones we have all look pretty darn good.

He is not in town right now. He may come Saturday. Not clear on the scholly issue right now. He had an offer early on. He has some 'off field' issues also that caused several schools to back away. Getting him on campus is a start. They may offer if they do not get a committment from some others this weekend. He is the #5 player in the country and Chizik has stated he wants the best player he can get regardless of position. Honestly, I think at least one kicker gray shirts to make room for any surprises.

Thanks, wtc. I am really hoping everyone is right and we don't see hardly any attrition from this class. I have seen speculation of only 1 or 2 players, although they didn't identify which players.

Nice work, Cincy. I did not dare interrupt a superb flip in progress.

Yes, I'm still broke, but slowly mending. Thank goodness today I am not nearly as exhausted as I've been every day the past 2 weeks.

Do you realize that Kurt Warner and Brett Favre are both still playing football? My mind has been blown by this all week. How does that happen?
