Back from The Prowl

Hey everyone. So tonight was Montgomery's turn to play host to Auburn's Tiger Prowl barnstorming tour. It was quite a sight.

Your football array included: Curtis Luper, Trooper Taylor, Tommy Thigpen.

Your non-football array included: Kerry Cremeans (asst. women's basketball coach) and Randall Dickey (asst. men's basketball coach).

You HABOTN attendees included: WEG, me, others who didn't want their handles identified.

I'd say the crowd was in the 100-200 range. Not too shabby. I expected to see more football coaches, but most fans probably come out for Taylor anyway. They hung out, mingled, addressed the crowd briefly, signed autographs, mugged for pictures and headed out around 8 p.m.

Coaches opened their day around 6 a.m. CDT at Carver High in Columbus, Ga., and concluded their high-school tour at Dallas County High. No schools in Montgomery were visited because, as Luper said, they gave priority to schools featuring players with an Auburn offer. So it goes.

Here are some pics:

Here's Luper chatting with my boy Bag.

Taylor addressing the crowd.

Taylor taking time to mingle with the peeps.

Thigpen giving someone the squint.

Dickey talking it up.

I would like to introduce a round table discussion topic. SEC Expansion.
Hypothetically, if the SEC were to expand to 16 teams, what would be your ideal scenario?

I say, give USCjr to the ACC, take UNC and Duke. Go to Big12 and take Texas and Oklahoma. That leaves room for 1 more addition from Maryland, Louisville, TAMU, GaTech (or keep USCjr).

This scenario would greatly increase the SEC footprint both geographically and in terms of TV markets ($$). It would increase competetive value and revenue in ALL sports across the board and it would increase the overall academic standing of the conference as a whole.

Discuss.

8:21 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Buh-bye to Hull as well. It's not official yet, but it's happening.

And no, no reason...at all, to watch Stoke-Blackburn highlights. And I'm really looking forward to that Burnley-Birmingham game on Saturday on ESPN2.

Arrested Development was a great show. The "IFC" channel on my Comcast lineup airs reruns of it frequently. Currently, we're nearing the end of the series run. I find it simply amazing someone hasn't seen a single full episode of Seinfeld. Not to have seen either of those shows is a loss to your comedic life balance.

8:23 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Miller...we disussed this a little last week. While vehemently opposed to expansion, if it did happen, I would push for Clemson and Ga. Tech out of the ACC, and maybe Florida St. I don't see UNC or Duke leaving the ACC (for basketball reasons) and I don't think I want them anyway, though annual SEC matchups between Duke, UNC, and UK in basketball would be cool.

Out of the Big 12, I Texas seems like an obvious choice. Past that, I'm not so sure. I would like to see Texas keep playing A&M and Oklahome every year, but we can't take both of those teams, and I don't know that we want to take either.

Well, actually, I don't want to take any at all, but if it happens, I'll stick with Clemson, Tech, FSU, and Texas.

8:26 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I've seen Seinfeld. I know the characters and the basic concept.

I didn't see any genius in it.

Jackass? That's genius!

8:28 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Yeah, genius in that they spent $5 million to make a movie and grossed $80 million.

8:30 AM
Blogger Miller said...

Adding Clemson would not bring anything to the table for the SEC. They bring zero tv market and little other value.
With UNC, Duke, UK, (maybe Louisville) the SEC would become a premiere basketball conference as well as football. Plus the SEC tv contracts are better than the ACC.

8:31 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'll say this: The Big 12 doesn't make 1/2 the money it should. Before you go raiding the ACC, consider poaching the Big 12 instead.

Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri are big game!

8:32 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

yepp, I agree with Jay G, if Expansion cannot be avoided. Best case, NO EXPANSION.

8:35 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I think the SEC is good as it stands. We'll have to see if all the alleged expansion actually occurs with the Big 10 et al.

If superconferences begin to develop, then the SEC must act on Florida State and Miami.

Until then, though, I think the SEC will sit tight.

8:43 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

jackass....really? that's one show i could never watch a full episode of.

i don't see the advantage of a super conference besides the money and i guess that would be the advantage, but would having FSU & Miami really bring more to the SEC? i'm guessing that Texas would bring in more of the tv market, etc. but geographically FSU & Miami make more sense. that said, i like the 12 we've got.

8:46 AM
Blogger michael said...

What's wrong with the beer we got? It drank good!

8:51 AM
Blogger Miller said...

You're right. If expansion happens, the Big12 will cease to exist.
I disagree about adding Miami and FSU. What dobyhey bring to the table? We are already in those tv markets. So they really don't expand the footprint of the SEC. Doesn't make good $$ sense to add those 2 teams.

8:52 AM
Blogger Miller said...

I'd be good with adding Kansas along with Texas and Oklahoma.
Adding UNC or Maryland or Virginia would help add the DC/Baltimore market.

8:54 AM

Blogger E-Bro said...

What are the odds that this expansion talk sort of spurs the Big Twelve into action to fulfill its potential?

9:02 AM
Blogger Secondaid said...

If we're talking SEC expansion, you have to start with Florida State. It was a crime that they went to the ACC in the first place. Miami also makes sense. While we're raiding the ACC, let's also take Clemson and Georgia Tech. Arkansas probably will go to an expanded Big 12(16?) because of their long-dormant rivalries with the Texas schools, which might leave us with an extra spot to fill to get to 16. Possibilities there are Louisville or Southern Miss.

So the new West would be Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, MSU, FSU, GT, (Louisville/USM). The East would be Miami, Clemson, USC, Georgia, Tennessee, UK, Vandy, Florida.

I'd watch those games.

9:15 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I hope the expansion is not forced on the SEC. If it isn't the SEC will stay the same as it should.

As my daughter got off work several sirens blasted as cars roared across the Rainbow Plaza parking lot. It was the crimson caravan arriving at The Center Stage in beautifull downtown Rainbow City. Miami makes ZERO sense. Small school that doesn't make a lot of money and is marginally competitive in any sport. They aren't anything like the SEC. Since only one Florida school can be added, I think the hierarchy should be USF, FSU, UCF, Miami (though I've said before that UCF is the BEST fit).

Getting rid of USC makes little sense to me, either. I don't understand why you would go there. Market size? Huh? We're talking about the SES, right?

This TV market thing makes bo sense to me. Is Starkville a prominent TV market? What about Auburn? Oxford? Baton Rouge? Gainesville? I'm guessing Tuscaloosa gets put in the B'Ham market, Athens gets put in Atlanta, so there's that, but the SEC is about strong alumni bases and regional loyalties. They have proven that they can opperate outside of traditionally strong markets at huge profits.

Thanks for the welcome JGT! Lots of good discussion this morning. I didn't know expansion was on the list of things maybe to come, so I'll have to think about it before I decide. It would make for some good basketball games, but they aren't too good at football.

South Carolina is virtually even with Duke and Kentucky in generating, just below aTm, and above Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Clemson, FSU, UCF, USF, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy,Maryland, Missouri, Kansas, Louisville, USM, and Miss. State. We're talking a top-25 athletic program here, money wise, that competes on a high level in multiple sports, has a good fanbase, and makes sense geographically. For anyone to say that they should be the first SEC team to be dropped is just the rhetoric of haters.

Vandy is in a nationally ranked market (47th), but does nothing.

Kentucky, Arkansas, and the MS schools should be next on the list.

THEN kick out SC.

11:34 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I can tell you anything I want...and adding NC schools just dilutes the conference. They don't generate enough revenue, and are too specialized. One of Duke's top programs (Lacrosse) would go bye-bye, and UNC's soccer program would get lost in the SEC.

Baseball power is one of your criteria, but you're kicking out one of the best teams.

Basketball, sure, but at what cost?

I still don't follow the "big market/tv" conversation.

We don't need Duke, we have Vandy, and the current SEC schools hold their own. UGA and UF are two of the top public research establishments in the nation. Research triangle be damned!

Is expansion really inevitable? The Big 10 can't even get the best fit for their conference to join. I don't know if they can really pull this off. Nobody's going to come poaching the SEC or anything if they stick with 12.
