Auburn football gets another commitment

Hey everyone. Quick word that Sweet Water linebacker Chris Landrum has committed to play football for Auburn beginning in 2011.

He stands 6-foot-2 and weighs approximately 215 pounds.

We know Auburn was hot after Landrum because it brought the Tiger Prowl traveling band of coaches to Sweet Water two weeks ago. He has a standing offer from Alabama ... and other programs.

WTC, I like what Landrum had to say but I am not surprised. I like all other members of the AU family understand the feeling that these recruits have. There is no other place like Auburn. I'm excited that we have a coaching staff that believes in Auburn and has embraced the "Family". They are not afraid to go after the top recruits because they know what they have to sell to them is a grade A product. The coaches will come and go, the players will come and go, but Auburn will always be with them.

Don't know bout that. I don't think it will be easy for us at all and woldn't be shocked if we don't get there, but we seem to be pretty solid favorites for one of the two advancing spots out of our group.

We can absolutely beat Algeria and Slovenia. The thing that worries me about them is that they will concede a lot of possession to us and we're not always the best at taking the game to somebody.

Still, failure to reach the knockout round will be a huge failure for US Soccer. I think it's right to expect us to be able to advance from the group.

Don't get me wrong, a healthy Davies would have been great to have, but I don't think he had gotten to the point yet where he was crucial to the team. Call it the Eddie Johnson syndrome.

As for Donovan, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree b/c I thought it was pretty unequivocal that he's the best player the US has ever produced. He's certainly done more in intenational soccer than Lennon.

He was the driving force behind the successful run in the Confed Cup last year...as well as just about any other success the US has had in the last eight years.

Waiter/Waitress at a restaurant does not equal working a VIP hospitality tent. Sorry. I've been on both sides of that rope (having worked almost every possible aspect possible in food and beverage, as well as having access to VIP areas), and the is no customary requirement for tipping there. Back in the day I've seen/known plenty of AU and UAT football players that got extra benefits. I been away from that world for years now and wonder how much still goes on.

1:33 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I work with an ex-UAT player and he says the $100 handshakes were plentiful. He also said that Logan Young was as dirty as advertised. For road games he would rent a penthouse and stock it with food and drinks for some of the elite players. This was the early 80's. I know that on road trips now the players usually don't get away much.

1:42 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The NCAA really needs to do something about what benefits players are allowed to receive. Players can't really take part time jobs to make ends meet.

The NCAA also needs to reconsider how punishment is handed down when rules are violated.

1:44 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I disagree about paying players. A full ride with Meals and living are a great benefit that I would have gladly traded for the opportunity to work and have a few more "spending" dollars.

Most players on top of that will usually receive Pell Grants in addition to their scholarship which gives them a nice bit of walking around money, and if they don't qualify for that, then their parents are usually good for it. College sports need to stay no-pay.

the biggest thing the ncaa needs to address is the speed of their infractions process. we have the funkin' internet today. there are these things called video conferencing and email. there is no reason the committee could not meet once a month instead of once every four years or so. the rules committee didn't screw around outlawing something as insignificant as tiger prowl. that only took almost a year from inception. (and a big middle finger to rutgers or whatever whiny dullard school proposed it). i thought reggie bush would be retired by the time the uscw thing came to close and it may not be entirely over. i know killing uscw is financial hari kari and you don't want to turn off the $$$ fountain, but dang. everyone knew bush and others were paid years ago. if it goes a lot deeper than what was obvious on the surface and warranted as much time as it took, uscw and kiffykin are going to be able to describe the bullets that are at the other end of the barrel.

I would like NCAA sanctions to include sanctions that follow a coach. If a coach moves to a different school, he shouldn't be able to start with a clean slate. While a school is on probation, the coaches that got the school on probation should be banned from working at another NCAA school as a minimum, even the ones not directly connected to the wrong doing. Why? The school gets punished, the players get punished, and you get the Jackie Sherrills of the world that just move on to the next school they put on probation.

3:01 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

then kiffykin and the o should be a perfect match for uscw.

3:16 PM

chip, I think they have pushed the uscw decision off till next week. From what I read the report is very detailed and lengthy. I don't think it is going to end well for them.

I agree sanctions should follow a coach. Boosters should also get into more trouble and so should the player that was involved. More times than not the school and a bunch of innocent players receive the brunt of the punishments.

How about quicker NCAA decisions through the use of tazers? Have NCAA investigators apply punishment as they find the violations.

i'm off to see the chizik. the wonderful chizik of AUz.

at battleship park in mobile. what is betting line he makes a crack about needing to rename the battleship the uss AU?

Dmiller-I see where the kid at Univ of TX was granted a medical waiver for last season. I think this opens the door for him to transfer to AU now.
(He is a basketball player from North Carolina. He played on the AAU team that Barbee has contacts with) Rumor has it that he was waiting to see if he could the waiver, which he did, and now he has 3 years of eligibility left. He plays PG and is the piece AU needs for next year as the PG they have is Josh Wallace (5'10" walk on)

I guess no one is around for me to live blog from chiz's appearance in mobile.

He looked very tired upon arrival.

There are 1983 commemorative AU coke bottles (with 1983 coke included) up for silent auction. I wonder where I would wake up if I drank one?

Recruiting genius luper is present.

Chiz compliments barbee. Says staff work together in recruiting.

Ben tate was not returning for senior season.

Tate also called to congratulate chiz on signing day and apologize for dunking the ball in the bowl game.

WTC, great news on Ward getting that waiver. Now who do we cut loose so that we have a spot for him? From what I have read if healthy he is a baller.

JayG-girls softball is a great game to watch. My cousin was MVP of the tourney about 6 years ago. She mashed about 8 homers in the tourney. Usually the 3A-4A-5A girls are the better teams. I do not keep up with it as much as I used to, but find out the teams with the best records and follow them. They usually have at least 1 stud pitcher (all you really need) and at least 2 good hitters that can mash it. Another cousin will be there scouting the girls he has signed for next season.

CHB-I think we are counting on someone not qualifying.

I had a 1983 AU coke bottle. I got thirsty one night in 89 and drank it. It was a bit dusty, but otherwise fine.

Blogger CHB said...

WTC, another thing on Ward is that I thought we wanted him because he would be eligible to play immediately. He was basically granted and extra year. Wouldn't he still need to be granted a medical hardship in order to transfer and not sit out a year?

9:09 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Keep in mind that Ward's waiver is just a medical harship waiver... i.e. medical redshirt... he has not been granted a medical hardship release yet...yet.
Although, the medical redshirt is a good first step in that direction...

Well, LeSuck and the Cavs lost tonight. And there was much rejoicing.

I like the live blogging too, chip^2.

The Tate not returning thing was prior to last year? And then Chiz talked him into it?

10:12 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

whoever won the silent auction went home with about a dozen 1983 cokes.

personally, i would rather have an 1893 coke using the original original formula.

10:12 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

i would have wanted to leave too after 2008 if i was a rb. according to chiz tate was all set to leave and the staff talked him into staying. he also talked about tate trying to hide in the crowd after the goal post dunk. chiz had nothing but good things to say about ben and what he did for the team this year.

he continuously stressed the fact that keeping the staff together is a priority for him and jj. chiz apparently didn't know luper was going to be there. chiz said he knew luper was out recruiting somewhere but didn't know where exactly and was surprised when he got there to find luper hanging out with the fans.

speaking of old coca-cola, has anyone under the age of 40 here ever had a true, hand-dipped coke with the soda water added to the syrup? i've had one in my lifetime at some theme park. outta sight!!!

glad to provide some substance.

we literally sat in the dark listening to chiz talk for about 15 minutes until the sodium lamps in the hangar (yes, an airplane hangar) heated up again. if you have never been to battleship park in mobile, there is an aerospace museum where events such as tonight are held. there are all these military aircraft on display and cruise missiles hanging from the ceiling. neat venue.

10:34 PM
Blogger wellsAU said...

Kinda dramatic... football talk and old war memorials. That'd make me want to go into battle between the tackles.

10:42 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

they organized a tiger walk down the gangplank of the battleship for chiz's arrival. it was complete with aubie and the orange and blue azalea trail maids.

props to the mobile & baldwin county AU clubs that have cosponsored these events the last few years. i can tell they put a lot of effort into these things and it is appreciated.

if this staff is together 3 more years, i would like to think 6 championships are possible. 3 real ones (sec) and 3 that don't count for much other than the expensive crystal egg you get for all your trouble.
