Baseball weekend wrap-up

Hey everyone. So Auburn had a fairly successful weekend on the ol' baseball diamond this weekend.

The Tigers earned a series sweep over Mississippi State, a team that entered the weekend in 11th place. Coach John Pawlowski's team handled business with amplomb -- particularly at the plate. That's where seven batters compiled weekend averages over .400.

Here is the honor roll:
  • OF Brian Fletcher -- 7-for-14, 7 RBIs
  • 1B Hunter Morris -- 6-for-12, 4 RBIs
  • SS Casey McElroy -- 5-for-10, 6 RBIs
  • C Ryan Jenkins -- 7-for-12, 6 RBIs
  • DH Kevin Patterson -- 4-for-7, 3 RBIs
  • 3B Dan Gamache -- 3-for-7, 3 RBIs

Auburn finished the weekend with 43 hits. Ten of them were doubles, one was a triple and the team hit 12 balls over the wall.

Stuff like that doesn't happen anywhere very often ... let alone Auburn.

So where is the team positioned in the standings? Glad you asked.

Auburn is 15-9 in league play, which places it in a tie for second in the Western Divison. The team is one game back of division-leading Arkansas. The team is tied for fourth overall ... and would have to completely implode to fall out of the postseason picture.

Next up: A home series against Tennessee, which currently is in 8th place.

I just recently discovered my brother is an avid EPL fan and his team is Aston Villa. I received his ire after I asked him why he would cheer for an irrelevant team.

Imploding would mean for Auburn to win 1 game or less, and Bama to sweep series vs Ole Miss and Tennessee (they've swept one series this year- MState). Not going to happen.

Irrelevant? Bit like the pot calling the kettle black isn't it?

I kid, I kid. That said, Villa does at least have a bit of history (won the European Cup back in the early 80s) and they're a pretty consistent top 6 team these days. Fairly relevant I would argue. Plus, they have two American GK's and an American owner.

In a moment of ironic irony, I kind of got a kick out of Spencer Region opening up his recruitment again. He is putting himself in a very bad position. You know Saban isn't going to go after him after the stunt he pulled committing, and you have to wonder if Auburn will stick with him after the other linemen we have committed and his decisive indecisiveness.

11:49 AM
Blogger wtc said...

SFC-I would not say that Saban will not go after him. I would think that group has been after him ever since he announced. I have not heard that from him directly, but WJOX was discussing that subject this AM. The problem, for those that are ethical, is that if I go out and say a commitment is a commitment if you come with my team, but if you go with another team, you are still fair game, then what part of the above statement is a kid to believe.

What I don't get about that though is everyone continues to bring up Julio "I need some stick'em" Jones. I think at time I can be unbiased and this is one of those time. DUDE CAN NOT CATCH. Actually, I don't mind playing golf. I just hate watching it, particularly on TV. For me, it falls into the same category as darts, bowling, or billiards. The ACC will most likely poach extra Big East teams making the conference fold up shop, at least as a big deal in football.

I didn't tell them that I was lying and actually hadn't taken any precautions. I am pretty sure they are dead, and the badminton net and rackets have been ruined also. It is a total loss.

As far as Auburn to the SEC East, I'd think it makes more historic/geographical sense. Florida is a traditional foe, as is UGA. The 'Bama rivalry would be a huge hinge as far as transferring sides. Personally, I'd miss the LSU game a lot. If they didn't happen, those would be my two gripes about switching.

the braves just hit a grand slam, WHAT?

Blogger Norm said...

Fearless, I think you're mistaken. I've followed baseball all my life so I know the rules. In order to hit a Grand Slam, the team at bat must first have successfully gotten no less than three other team members on base. I don't dispute that a Grand Slam was hit but since you said "Braves" I know it can't be true that the proper conditions had been met. It must've been another team playing tonight that hit the Grand Slam.

No big whoop, try to do better next time.

in my hypothetical new sec, the expansion to 10 conference games would solve any problem with destroying rivalries. play 7 against everyone in your division and 3 from the other side rotating two. not much different than what goes on now. i think splitting AU and cousin humper u would actally work in the humpers' favor because now they are matched up with texas and oki every year which create huge media games provided they all maintain their current level of play.

powerball numbers are:

I recall that when the SEC was split into divisions, Auburn was originally supposed to go to the east. Both Auburn and Alabama insisted on being in the same division. I don't see that changing nor any reason it should. The competition runs much deeper than the head to head games.

I'd rather have an annual game with Florida though than LSU.

We'll always play Alabama. I don't think there's a worry over that. I just don't like the idea that college football will basically become a three or four conference league, with everyone else having to go after the scraps.

We all know college football is a business anyway. But now the AD's and the Presidents aren't every trying to hide it.

Expansion is going to happen and its going to ruin a great thing. Getting to a league Championship game now is tough, doing it with 4 more teams is going to require even more luck. Football is going to hell in a hand basket if you ask me.

IMO, Conf expansion gets us closer to a playoff.

My logic:

The issue with playoffs is capturing too many teams. If you were to narrow the conferences down to 8 and just took the champ from each into an 8 team field that would only add 2 extra games to the existing model.

Most of these conferences will play a Championship game at some point. In essence you have a 16 team playoff with the first round amounting to a super regional.

I think expansion is great and is a step in the right direction.

8:18 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Seanzie- From everything I've read, this does not help at all with eventually getting to a playoff. Right now a plus 1 sounds appealing, with the Mega Conferences, there are going to be many more teams with the same records, so now the BCS is even more distorted with no solution in sight.

8:21 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

8:22 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, exactly why eventually there will be a push for the playoff. Without the ease of scheduling teams enjoy now, there will be fewer and fewer clear cut teams. The current opponents will lose their "the season is the playoff" argument as it will not lend itself to doing so.

8:25 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Unless you can show where a playoff will make more money than the current system, then I think it's off the table. Sponsorships are the biggest sticking points in this and I don't see them getting resolved.

8:27 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I don't know if you realize this, Eddie, but CFB is already in the proverbial handbasket. The postseason has become a joke. The scheduling by the big teams is a joke.

8:27 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, it's not that hard to visualize. These games will still exist in one form or another. The bowls can still exist. It will be just like any other sporting event.

8:28 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Seanzie- I don't disagree with you, but I also don't think this is the end all be all answer that is needed.

8:28 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The major difference will be...instead of one game mattering among 30, there will 7 that matter.

8:28 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, I never said it was the end all be all answer. But I believe it to be a step in the right direction.

8:29 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Seanzie- It could be the way right now, except it's not. The money is there right now with or without the "Mega" conferences. I may be totally wrong, but I don't see a playoff in the future either way.

8:30 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Let me put it another way...

If you get rid of the BCS conferences...per se and you just have 6 or 8 mega conferences...you have much better access to marquee games. You then will have 8 championship games which will all be televised nationally and be what amounts to a super regional playoff.

Initially, the BCS will try to sort through the quagmire but it will ultimately fail.

8:32 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Seanzie- Granted, I'll disagree about it being a step in the right direction.

Also, if you want Auburn to win more than 1 SEC title in a decade....just actually be hoping for 1 SEC championship in a decade. Sorry, I want Auburn to be a powerhouse and it isn't and more than likely will never be in my lifetime. Adding 4 teams to the league just makes Auburn and even tougher job and lowers it's stock within the conference. I'm sorry if I can't get on board with this.

8:32 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

It's a matter of perspective, Eddie. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best. I see all the time where everyone wants to play more challenging OoC games. Adding teams to the conference will add better games to the schedule. If you have a good coaching staff and great players, you can be successful. In the current model, most teams won't have a chance, but that will be the case for even the best squads.

8:34 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The biggest issue is having to let go of the current views of CFB and basically hit the reset button.

Conference expansion past 12 teams will do this. It will force the current model to change.

The irony is the Big Ten is one of the biggest opponents of the playoff but should they do this, they very well be the catalyst that gets us to a playoff.

I disagree with the writer, Eddie. But I will say that if the Big Ten is the only conference to expand, then, yes, it will not change the status quo. What will bring about the changes, IMO, is if and when the other conferences follow suit.

8:43 AM

The SEC would participate in any playoff they come up with just the way it is. Leave the expansion to the lesser conferences (i.e. Big 10).

Blogger Seanzie said...

If you want Auburn to be a powerhouse we should up and leave the SEC and move to the Big Least when Rutgers goes away.

8:50 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I know that we are all speculating, I cannot find hardly anyone that says that Mega Conference will lead to a playoff system. You are using logic in your arguement, which works in most everything except College Football. If logic prevailed, Auburn would not have been denied a chance at the championship in 2004. I think our biggest disagreement is that you believe logic will rule and I think that logic always loses.

8:52 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well Eddie, as the great Ron Burgundy would say... "when in Rome."

8:53 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Do I want Auburn to be a powerhouse in the SEC, sure I do, but I can live with the way it is now. Mark it down, Expansion will only be good for Auburn's check book, not it's name or status. We are challenged in many ways and we don't need the deck stacked more against us. Sorry if I have a realistic view of things. I know Auburn and Love Auburn, but if you think this is good for Auburn in the aspect of winning championships, I think you are highly mistaken. I'm sure I might be the only one that believes this since this is an Auburn board, but I think that is more real than you are giving it credit for.

FUTBOL

Old Firm need to head to the EPL if they want to remain relevant in Europe, but I'm not sure they should. For one thing, it would just about kill the SPL.

Might just be best if the UK was one league altogether, i.e., Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, all joined with England. Not gonna happen, though.

FOOTBALL

If expansion gives us a playoff, I still won't see expansion as a positive thing. There's the whole diluting the product thing, but competing with Bama, Florida, UGA, UT, LSU...that's hard enough. Throw a Texas, Oklahoma, etc., into the equation...man.

Unless teams with two or three loses are allowed to play for national titles, the SEC's run at all these national titles will greatly decrease b/c all these teams will beat the crap out of each other. Next thing you know, the SEC will be breaking away from the NCAA and forming its own entity.

8:59 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Why do so many people think bigger is better. Not necessarily true, well maybe the old pay check. I don't know how it would play out for the playoffs or National Championship but bigger conferences will not payoff for the indivdual schools. It would add money to the conference coffers but would need to be split more ways for the schools. National TV coverage would be reduced for some schools. Auburn ?? maybe.

On balance, count me with Eduardo. Bigger is not better.

Everybody complains about scheduling, but the last time I saw it, we're playing eight games each year against teams from the best conference in the nation. We're in the midst of a plan to plan to play one non-conference BCS opponent each year. That's prudent. And it's prudent to put three wins on the schedule beyond that.

A playoff sounds great, but how would it work? Computer? Human? Home sites? Travel would be utter hell for fans. What is the number one complaint among fans now? Cost. Do we think expansion will make attending games cheaper. Hardly.

To me the best weekend of the year is the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Playoffs, right? In my view, no. It's more like the bowl system. I like the bowls. I like getting to watch 30 more games around the holidays.

The deeper the NCAA tournament goes, the less I'm interested -- this year was an aberration because of Butler, Northern Iowa, etc.

Football players take a greater physical pounding than any other varsity sport. Adding more games will add to their load, and, yes, academics have to fit in somewhere.

The older I get, the more I realize that when we try to improve, we're generally are screwing up.

Good points Jet.

Expansion is coming. There's nothing we can do to stop it. I'm not necessarily in favor of it but what can I do? Nothing. Not that it matters anyway. We'll be ruled by the Chinese in short order and our version of football will be a thing of the past.
