Baseball weekend wrap-up
Hey everyone. So Auburn had a fairly successful weekend on the ol' baseball diamond this weekend.
The Tigers earned a series sweep over Mississippi State, a team that entered the weekend in 11th place. Coach John Pawlowski's team handled business with amplomb -- particularly at the plate. That's where seven batters compiled weekend averages over .400.
Here is the honor roll:
- OF Brian Fletcher -- 7-for-14, 7 RBIs
- 1B Hunter Morris -- 6-for-12, 4 RBIs
- SS Casey McElroy -- 5-for-10, 6 RBIs
- C Ryan Jenkins -- 7-for-12, 6 RBIs
- DH Kevin Patterson -- 4-for-7, 3 RBIs
- 3B Dan Gamache -- 3-for-7, 3 RBIs
Auburn finished the weekend with 43 hits. Ten of them were doubles, one was a triple and the team hit 12 balls over the wall.
Stuff like that doesn't happen anywhere very often ... let alone Auburn.
So where is the team positioned in the standings? Glad you asked.
Auburn is 15-9 in league play, which places it in a tie for second in the Western Divison. The team is one game back of division-leading Arkansas. The team is tied for fourth overall ... and would have to completely implode to fall out of the postseason picture.
Next up: A home series against Tennessee, which currently is in 8th place.

Baseball substance!!
Woo hoo!
Good job, WEG!
I like it.
Interesting picture there by Todd.
Hoover or Big Cat?
nice weekend on the diamond. WDE.
Auburn will not implode!!
We seem to be exploding!!!!! Keep the long balls coming.....
SOCCER
I just recently discovered my brother is an avid EPL fan and his team is Aston Villa. I received his ire after I asked him why he would cheer for an irrelevant team.
Imploding would mean for Auburn to win 1 game or less, and Bama to sweep series vs Ole Miss and Tennessee (they've swept one series this year- MState). Not going to happen.
Sometimes it pays to be first?!
I am so excited for baseball I am actually going to a game this weekend! Nothing like sitting at the ball park on a spring day.
I lova da beisbol.
Lookin like HOOVER, peeps!
Seanzie's brother is a Villain, huh?
Irrelevant? Bit like the pot calling the kettle black isn't it?
I kid, I kid. That said, Villa does at least have a bit of history (won the European Cup back in the early 80s) and they're a pretty consistent top 6 team these days. Fairly relevant I would argue. Plus, they have two American GK's and an American owner.
SOCCER
I'm 99% sure Auburn will qualify for Hoover. I didn't mean to be alarming.
Midweek game this week or are those all over?
South Alabama this week.
Jax State next week...
Just took one week off for Finals.
That's AT USA in Mobile this week.
Harsh words, E-bro. And I was joking about Villa being irrelevant. I also received an abbreviated history on Villa football from his English roommate who is also a huge Villa fan.
^^ SOCCER ^^
You're mistaken there Pete, I never closed the soccer tag. My mistake, however, for not doing so. I will rectify this error now.
SOCCER
Ha. Norm's going to have a hard time if the tags have to be opened and closed.
I was just joshin', Sean. I certainly don't like much about Arsenal and and I'm kind of ambivalent towards Wenger, but I'd rather Arsenal win the EPL than Chelsea.
my future bro-in-law is graduating from AU on friday. if i can get off work friday i will be down there for at least the friday nite baseball game. cross your fingers!
Anyway, I'm not here to divert attention from Auburn Baseball, so back to the diamond we go...
I agree with your last statement. I think even Arsenal fans are getting ambivalent towards Wenger at this point.
I wish the Braves were half as good as Auburn this year.
The Red Sox handed the evil empire a thoroughly enjoyable butt whipping last night.
Has anyone bought tickets to Hoover yet? Tourney tickets are on sale now. I think single session tickets go on sale a week out.
Andy Bitter has a wonderful picture of an Auburn player balancing a baseball on the end of his bat. Pretty cool trick.
Great, a Monday at work and the place I go for refuge is talking soccer.
G, What does Auburn have to do in order to host a regional?
I guessing they also moved up from 19th in the rankings.
In a moment of ironic irony, I kind of got a kick out of Spencer Region opening up his recruitment again. He is putting himself in a very bad position. You know Saban isn't going to go after him after the stunt he pulled committing, and you have to wonder if Auburn will stick with him after the other linemen we have committed and his decisive indecisiveness.
SFC-I would not say that Saban will not go after him. I would think that group has been after him ever since he announced. I have not heard that from him directly, but WJOX was discussing that subject this AM. The problem, for those that are ethical, is that if I go out and say a commitment is a commitment if you come with my team, but if you go with another team, you are still fair game, then what part of the above statement is a kid to believe.
That's a swell pic by Mr. Van Ernst.
Unless it is late, I really can't see Saban risking Region changing his mind again. He has already given the elephants a black eye once.
The Hawks have to win 4 in a row. It's going to be difficult.
Auburn will have to bid for a regional first, which I doubt happened.
I am wondering about PPL's injury. Has anyone heard how severe it might be?
Only drama left in the NBA Conference semi's is Cleveland-Boston.
Could turn into a pretty classic playoff series.
Bitter has a good Q&A up with Barbee. I like his comments on recruiting. He says they will recruit internationally. I would love to get a 6'10" big European that can shoot threes. Not many players in the SEC could guard a player like that.
INTERNATIONALLY? heck, Lebo couldn't recruit within the state. this round ball could be fun again, eh?
Pat Burke was unguardable for those very reasons.
Burke thought they kept pints of beer at top of the rim.
Auburn up to 18 in Rivals and Baseball America. Magic number for a berth in Hoover is 2.
thanks fearless
i would be surprised if we didn't get those 2 this weekend
Auburn Football: Every Day... Returns With Weekly Webisodes starting today.
They took an Urban Meyer length break.
I was checking out Rivals and Barbee/Auburn are getting some love from the recruiting gurus. Most everyone who knows basketball thinks Barbee is going to do great things with this program.
There was also an article about the best conferences for each position. SEC was the best for WR's. What I don't get about that though is everyone continues to bring up Julio "I need some stick'em" Jones. I think at time I can be unbiased and this is one of those time. DUDE CAN NOT CATCH. He may be the most over-hyped WR ever.
Golf anyone?
Golf? The NCAA Golf Championships are taking place at the Honors Course in good old Ooltewah, TN, from June 1-6. Eddie and I use to work as caddies there.
I'm pretty excited about walking the course again in a few weeks and watching some golf in person.
Bro- I think I might just show back up for that event as well. Miss walking the course. Of course, not following Tiger this time and getting paid for it will be a little bit different than the last time.
Tiger is a ninny, now. Don't know how that happened, but it did.
Sup Hotties....
I will be at the USA on tomorrow to see the AU Tigers hit a few long balls outta Stanky Field.....
Got to go YARD will Mobilz is in the Hizzah!
I think CH=B was talking about his avatar, though.
Dang,
I almost feel like I need a translator. ;-)
PF - what's your point, what are you trying to say?
GOLF
CH=B, the last time I saw that picture was probably the last time I paid attention to golf. Today was the next time.
Any hotties interested in being a silent partner in a Franchise opportunity?
By the way, my son's baseball tournament game on Saturday was a lot like the AU game on the same day (minus the home runs). They were down 10-1 after one inning and 10-2 after two innings. Ended up winning 18-17 in the bottom of the 6th.
SC, golf is great fun and probably even better if playing with her.
CHB = only if it has something to do with either Amway or Kirby Vacuum.
Soccer is more fun and probably even better if played with Heather Mitts.
I will admit one way that golf is better than soccer: it is easier to drink beer and play golf than it is to drink beer and play soccer.
You're less likely to get tased drinking beer while watching soccer than golf.
Ah...Heather Mitts.
I can drink beer and play golf. I've done it many times. I can drink beer and watch soccer. Wait, no I can't. I can't watch soccer. I'll keep the beer though thank you very much.
Sorry Norm, no pyramid schemes here.
Amway isn't a pyramid scheme, it's just a harmless cult.
GOLF
Actually, I don't mind playing golf. I just hate watching it, particularly on TV. For me, it falls into the same category as darts, bowling, or billiards. I think that's why that Golden Tee video game (or whatever it was called) got popular for a while. Somebody finally figured out how to move golf indoors with the other bar games.
I used to spend as much money on Golden Tee in the bar as I did on the booze.
I've never been able to play Golden Tee. People have those things locked down nationwide.
The golf courses on TV are never good. If they haven't got a windmill, it isn't a decent golf course.
I love some put put. I saw a tourney on ESPN a few years back. It was like 3am..you know prime time. The winners of these things can sometime bring home 25k+.
CH=B ... I am lookinig for a boutique franchise ... a crystal meth dealership that caters to UAT fans. I know it's a sure winner.
CH=B:
Speaking of franchise opportunities, somebody needs to open a Chik-Fil-A in Chelsea (or Alex City) so it might as well be you.
Jet, that market may already be saturated.
That's one of the better pics I've seen Big Bird. Well done.
Thanks ehyou but it isn't my artwork, I just borrowed it a long time ago...
Man, it is kind of pathetic that College Football Live is on now. I mean, we have months until football season kicks off and these guys are talking about it. Of course, it might be more pathetic that I am listening.
That's a 12 month enterprise, SteveFC...
Jet, I suggest getting touch with those toothless Gwinnett Co. Ga. bombmakers that were featured in the AJC last week.
A good friend that is a family law atty(that's nasty work) was explaining to us this past weekend how those dumb meth heads can't even balance a checkbook, yet they can recite the chemical reactions necessary to "cook it up".
Another friend that does environmental assessments then explained that the chemicals poured down the drains cause the septic systems to become environmental hazards and require expensive supervised cleanup in Ga.
I have a long segment of rope which I'm not using for anything. I also have some decent trees in my backyard. F4* is about to get a rope swing. That little monkey will have fun with that right up until the time he falls from the limb holding the rope.
They are talking about Kiffikin winning the PAC10 title. Man, I love to see a Kiffikin butt kickin.
Even with all of the talent at USCw it is going to take at least 2 years before Kiffen wins the PAC 10.
That is of course, assuming that he doesn't crash and burn in some manner.
Steve, were you a cover boy for a German computer programming mag back in the 80's?
Big Bird, Chick-Fil-A is one of my interests and Chelsea was the area. That is area is growing in population, but the commercial side is still lagging. I was looking at a Moe's as well but the financial requirements are ridiculous. $1mil total assets and 300k liquid.
A lot of people think USCw is going to get hammered very shortly.
I still can't understand why they hired Kiffin. You don't bring a criminal back to the scene of the crime.
Firehouse Subs has a fairly modest franchising rate.
CH=B:
I'll put up the $ and you can run the Chik-Fil-A and we'll split the profits 50/50.... We'll also have to give JGT a referal fee of some sort for brokering the deal.
seazie, do you know someone who is in the business?
Maybe we should talk Big Bird.
No but I had to do some research on Firehouse for work. I came across the numbers during some of that research. As I'm sure you're aware, we do some bidness with the restaurant bidness.
Can we let the Auburn baseball team hit for the Braves tonight??
BTW JGT, are you going to be covering some of the softball this coming weekend in Montgomery? My niece is playing for Ider in the class 2-A finals.
So according to reports, the Big 10 is set to snatch two teams from the Big 12 as well as ND and Rutgers.
The ACC will most likely poach extra Big East teams making the conference fold up shop, at least as a big deal in football.
If the SEC were to take Texas and Texas AM then Auburn would have to move to the eastern half. What would y'all say to that?
Seanzie, I don't really know what it is that you do.
As for the expansion, I'm all for it as long as we don't have to give up the Iron Bowl.
You franchise freaks just blew through a Beasley! and a Hello Kennesaw, Ga! THT and Scottie are gonna whup yo 244es.
In more light-hearted fare, Les Miles is always good for a laugh:
http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2010/5/10/1465705/les-miles-says-wheeeeeeee
CH=B,
I am in the Chelsea area. If you put in a Chick-fil-A, I promise to eat there at least three times a week. We are getting a Publix, maybe that will help the commercial side.
Don't mess with my conference.
Expansion beyond 12 makes no sense at all. None. Zero.
Jet - thank you! I was biting my keyboard.
I think my stance towards expansion (NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!) has been stated in the past.
CH=B:
My email is now part of my profile so shoot me a message and we can talk without turning this into the Hottest Franchise Blog On The Net...
Sorry for the Beasley. Maybe the new board can number each post. I never look at the top.
Cincy,
I would love to open one up. I like that area and have friends/family there. I think he would do really well. I could run a promotion on Saturdays during the fall. All Auburn fans that show me (well not me because I wouldn't be there on a Saturday during the fall) a ticket to the game that day would get a free buscuit.
Will do Big Bird. There are a couple of Hotties eye balling our Chick-fil-A.
Braves and Hawks both get back on track tonight.
CH=B. I work for Coca-Cola. They make soft drinks as well as other beverages.
I think the Hawks are burning just outside of Pit Road. They will get a DNF.
I personally would love a new SEC with added teams to our west. I would love to be in the eastern half of the conference. It suits us more.
Jet, I tire of all the Beasley and Kennesaw, Ga shoutouts. I used to live in Kennesaw, it's not that great.
As for Beasley, we get it. He was awesome.
It's Puppet Hour. They've kidnapped Kristinuh and FSJ and are holding them for ransom. Our only hope is to cover the puppets with a containment dome. Wish me luck.
Watch out for crystals, Mike.
Coca-Cola you say? Yeah, I think I've heard of it. Y'all have an office somewhere in the ATL area too don't you?
Yeah there are one or two around here somewhere.
BULL HONKEY.
I'm starting to get nervous about the new board. Where am I going to post my nonsense? Even if there is "nonsense" thread, I won't want to post in it, because no one will have to read it.
I may or may not be currently sitting in one.
Someone go check on THT. He might trying drown himself in a vat of Breyer's.
I always pictured THT as a Blue Bell kind of guy.
I for one may tend to key in on a "nonsense" thread.
Point of Inquiry: Which threads currently do not contain non-sense?
Seanzie ...
He would be, but they don't have Blue Bell in Tar Heel country, which is strange.
Norm, we can bring that phrase back! It starts here!
PF - I promise to still occasionally post nonsense on this board right here. What's the use of nonsense if you aren't going to force it on someone else?
Never heard of this coca-cola stuff. Sounds like the debles drink to me.
Maybe THT is eating an authentic philly cheesesteak at Chili's.
We don't allow that stuff in Durkastan.
I like Blue Bell, but will not be buying ice cream ever again. My Kitchenaid mixer ice cream make attachment makes the best ice cream I've ever had (albeit probably with the highest fat content, but it's about my happiness, not my health).
Well, I'll still buy Steven Colbert's Americone Dream from Ben and Jerry's because it's awesome and I don't think I could recreate it.
Alright y'all, I'm just sitting at work hitting F5 and avoiding the trip home. I'll catch up later.
BULL HONKEY!
Phish Food is my favorite Ben and Jerry's concoction. And it only costs a million dollars per quart.
Norm's favorite is Sealtest Ice Milk.
Phish Food has marshmellows. Love it.
Jet - correction, Superbrand. Unfortunately; since I no longer have a Winn-Dixie within easy driving distance, if I buy ice cream from the store now I resort to Blue Bell.
Bad news, gang. My containment dome plan didn't work. Crystals, you know. I know Seanzie told me to look out for them, but I thought he was just being square. Don't be surprised to see the beaches of Lake Martin dirtied up with the remains of FSJ and Kristinuh by the end of the week.
Crystals aren't your problem, Michael.
Krystals are your answers! Puppets love 'em. Buy a couple of Sackfuls and the puppets will eat them out of your hand.
Then again, just buy one and get Kristeenuh back. They can keep FSJ.
Also, I may have accidentally put the containment dome on a rabbit family and killed them. And then they rolled into the lake. Sorry. I will make sure someone pays for the cleanup.
More bad news gang. While I was calling Krystal to get some Krystals delivered, the dome rolled over onto an elderly couple playing badminton. They asked me if it was safe to play next to the dome, and I told them it was perfectly safe because I had taken every precaution that had been regulated on me. I didn't tell them that I was lying and actually hadn't taken any precautions. I am pretty sure they are dead, and the badminton net and rackets have been ruined also. It is a total loss.
I will push them into the lake so that they can be cleaned up at the same time as the rabbits.
michael, save yourself the hassle and just blame it on global warming and move on.
Worst news of the day. Krystal rejected my credit card. Apparently it got canceled. I tell ya what, it is a sad country we live in where you max out your credit card to build a containment dome and all of a sudden you can't use it anymore. The credit card, that is. I can still use the containment dome. But you guys knew that, I just told you about how I offed that elderly couple with it just a few minutes ago.
Big 10 to add Nebraska, Rutgers, Missouri, and Notre Dame?
Missouri and Nebraska have no comment until the Big 10 says something official.
SFC, where are you getting this? Is ND a go? I think its way past time for ND to join a conference.
i usually require a containment dome after a visit krystal.
I am hearing stuff on ESPN. It isn't a done deal. It is apparently rumors, but ND seems a bit more willing to talk. I don't think there is any doubt the Missouri and Rutgers would jump at a chance to join the Big 10, but I find ND and Nebraska hard to believe.
and your new sec is:
west:
texas
tam
oklahoma
oklahoma st.
arky
lsu
cousin humpers
sissysippi
east:
AU
uf
msu
ut
uk
usce
uga
vandy
expand conference schedule to 10 games.
would anyone like next week's powerball numbers?
i'll post them in a few...
Although teams like Oklahoma and Texas would be impressive, I would prefer if the SEC remained only schools in the deep south.
That's what she said.
Chip ....That sinister being in your avatar looks like it got trapped in the post-Krystal containment dome.
I guess ima gonna go read the sports info sites online to see the latest Big 10 expansion news.
I have voiced this opinion many times before. Let the big ten add 4 teams and let the stuupid yankees continue to call it the Big 10. But leave the SEC alone period.
Like killer bees, Blue Bell has not yet migrated to NC. So, I get by with Breyers. And I'm getting by right now.
Back to hockey.
CH=B durka durka
As far as Auburn to the SEC East, I'd think it makes more historic/geographical sense. Florida is a traditional foe, as is UGA. The 'Bama rivalry would be a huge hinge as far as transferring sides. Personally, I'd miss the LSU game a lot. If they didn't happen, those would be my two gripes about switching.
the braves just hit a grand slam, WHAT?
Fearless, I think you're mistaken. I've followed baseball all my life so I know the rules. In order to hit a Grand Slam, the team at bat must first have successfully gotten no less than three other team members on base. I don't dispute that a Grand Slam was hit but since you said "Braves" I know it can't be true that the proper conditions had been met. It must've been another team playing tonight that hit the Grand Slam.
No big whoop, try to do better next time.
I'd rather play the Pumpkin, the Lizard, and the Fighting Chicken over the other bulldog, the malcontents and the Carney folks.
norm you are right about the rules and I was a little skeptical and decided to double and triple check what i saw to make sure i wasn't dreaming
Thanks for catching that weeman.
All this soccer, hockey and braves talk has my head hurting. I think in intersect in my head is going haywire. I need a hot blonde to help cure me.
It was a miracle, but they Braves did hit a Grand Slam, literally the first one in years.
I saw it with my own eyes. It was beautiful.
in my hypothetical new sec, the expansion to 10 conference games would solve any problem with destroying rivalries. play 7 against everyone in your division and 3 from the other side rotating two. not much different than what goes on now. i think splitting AU and cousin humper u would actally work in the humpers' favor because now they are matched up with texas and oki every year which create huge media games provided they all maintain their current level of play.
powerball numbers are:
08-23-37-44-55 pb 3fjp9ar8yut
I recall that when the SEC was split into divisions, Auburn was originally supposed to go to the east. Both Auburn and Alabama insisted on being in the same division. I don't see that changing nor any reason it should. The competition runs much deeper than the head to head games.
I'd rather have an annual game with Florida though than LSU.
We'll always play Alabama. I don't think there's a worry over that. I just don't like the idea that college football will basically become a three or four conference league, with everyone else having to go after the scraps.
We all know college football is a business anyway. But now the AD's and the Presidents aren't every trying to hide it.
What up peeps? One day closer to Friday and one day closer to football.
Keep Hate Alive.
Hate before breakfast, after breakfast and all day long.
hey
I hate the Big 10. I hope they lose in everything. I can't stand those bastards.
Expansion is going to happen and its going to ruin a great thing. Getting to a league Championship game now is tough, doing it with 4 more teams is going to require even more luck. Football is going to hell in a hand basket if you ask me.
i almost passed out when Prado hit that Grand Salami. bout freakin' time they scored some runs. it is the Brewers, but still....
anyone watching 24? Jack has gone nuts. i love it.
Scottie- So you are saying Jack is mimicking the actor who is playing him?
scottie b - ssshh, 24's on my list but I rarely watch anything live anymore. I might get to watch it tonight. Don't ruin it for me.
IMO, Conf expansion gets us closer to a playoff.
My logic:
The issue with playoffs is capturing too many teams. If you were to narrow the conferences down to 8 and just took the champ from each into an 8 team field that would only add 2 extra games to the existing model.
Most of these conferences will play a Championship game at some point. In essence you have a 16 team playoff with the first round amounting to a super regional.
I think expansion is great and is a step in the right direction.
Seanzie- From everything I've read, this does not help at all with eventually getting to a playoff. Right now a plus 1 sounds appealing, with the Mega Conferences, there are going to be many more teams with the same records, so now the BCS is even more distorted with no solution in sight.
'24' SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Jack is pissed at the President's cover-up and protests by blazing a fatty outside CTU while wearing a rainbow colored tu-tu.
hope that doesn't spoil it for you Norm.
Eddie, exactly why eventually there will be a push for the playoff. Without the ease of scheduling teams enjoy now, there will be fewer and fewer clear cut teams. The current opponents will lose their "the season is the playoff" argument as it will not lend itself to doing so.
Unless you can show where a playoff will make more money than the current system, then I think it's off the table. Sponsorships are the biggest sticking points in this and I don't see them getting resolved.
I don't know if you realize this, Eddie, but CFB is already in the proverbial handbasket. The postseason has become a joke. The scheduling by the big teams is a joke.
Eddie, it's not that hard to visualize. These games will still exist in one form or another. The bowls can still exist. It will be just like any other sporting event.
Seanzie- I don't disagree with you, but I also don't think this is the end all be all answer that is needed.
The major difference will be...instead of one game mattering among 30, there will 7 that matter.
Eddie, I never said it was the end all be all answer. But I believe it to be a step in the right direction.
Seanzie- It could be the way right now, except it's not. The money is there right now with or without the "Mega" conferences. I may be totally wrong, but I don't see a playoff in the future either way.
Let me put it another way...
If you get rid of the BCS conferences...per se and you just have 6 or 8 mega conferences...you have much better access to marquee games. You then will have 8 championship games which will all be televised nationally and be what amounts to a super regional playoff.
Initially, the BCS will try to sort through the quagmire but it will ultimately fail.
Seanzie- Granted, I'll disagree about it being a step in the right direction.
Also, if you want Auburn to win more than 1 SEC title in a decade....just actually be hoping for 1 SEC championship in a decade. Sorry, I want Auburn to be a powerhouse and it isn't and more than likely will never be in my lifetime. Adding 4 teams to the league just makes Auburn and even tougher job and lowers it's stock within the conference. I'm sorry if I can't get on board with this.
It's a matter of perspective, Eddie. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best. I see all the time where everyone wants to play more challenging OoC games. Adding teams to the conference will add better games to the schedule. If you have a good coaching staff and great players, you can be successful. In the current model, most teams won't have a chance, but that will be the case for even the best squads.
The biggest issue is having to let go of the current views of CFB and basically hit the reset button.
Conference expansion past 12 teams will do this. It will force the current model to change.
The irony is the Big Ten is one of the biggest opponents of the playoff but should they do this, they very well be the catalyst that gets us to a playoff.
Seanzie- If I wanted this, I would be a big fan of the NFL.
"You can't always get what you want."
SOCCER
In other news, I believe the Old Firm should be in the EPL. I bet you disagree with that too. ;)
Seanzie- Please share where you see this heading to a playoff...
No Closer to Playoff, Check last Paragraph
I disagree with the writer, Eddie. But I will say that if the Big Ten is the only conference to expand, then, yes, it will not change the status quo. What will bring about the changes, IMO, is if and when the other conferences follow suit.
The SEC would participate in any playoff they come up with just the way it is. Leave the expansion to the lesser conferences (i.e. Big 10).
BCVS here to 2040????
Bottom line, no one knows what will happen and we can all speculate, which is what I'm doing, on how things will change down the road.
If you want Auburn to be a powerhouse we should up and leave the SEC and move to the Big Least when Rutgers goes away.
I know that we are all speculating, I cannot find hardly anyone that says that Mega Conference will lead to a playoff system. You are using logic in your arguement, which works in most everything except College Football. If logic prevailed, Auburn would not have been denied a chance at the championship in 2004. I think our biggest disagreement is that you believe logic will rule and I think that logic always loses.
Well Eddie, as the great Ron Burgundy would say... "when in Rome."
Do I want Auburn to be a powerhouse in the SEC, sure I do, but I can live with the way it is now. Mark it down, Expansion will only be good for Auburn's check book, not it's name or status. We are challenged in many ways and we don't need the deck stacked more against us. Sorry if I have a realistic view of things. I know Auburn and Love Auburn, but if you think this is good for Auburn in the aspect of winning championships, I think you are highly mistaken. I'm sure I might be the only one that believes this since this is an Auburn board, but I think that is more real than you are giving it credit for.
"Burn it down" ???
FUTBOL
Old Firm need to head to the EPL if they want to remain relevant in Europe, but I'm not sure they should. For one thing, it would just about kill the SPL.
Might just be best if the UK was one league altogether, i.e., Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, all joined with England. Not gonna happen, though.
FOOTBALL
If expansion gives us a playoff, I still won't see expansion as a positive thing. There's the whole diluting the product thing, but competing with Bama, Florida, UGA, UT, LSU...that's hard enough. Throw a Texas, Oklahoma, etc., into the equation...man.
Unless teams with two or three loses are allowed to play for national titles, the SEC's run at all these national titles will greatly decrease b/c all these teams will beat the crap out of each other. Next thing you know, the SEC will be breaking away from the NCAA and forming its own entity.
Why do so many people think bigger is better. Not necessarily true, well maybe the old pay check. I don't know how it would play out for the playoffs or National Championship but bigger conferences will not payoff for the indivdual schools. It would add money to the conference coffers but would need to be split more ways for the schools. National TV coverage would be reduced for some schools. Auburn ?? maybe.
The centerfold in June's Playboy will be in 3D. Glasses to accompany issue.
On balance, count me with Eduardo. Bigger is not better.
Everybody complains about scheduling, but the last time I saw it, we're playing eight games each year against teams from the best conference in the nation. We're in the midst of a plan to plan to play one non-conference BCS opponent each year. That's prudent. And it's prudent to put three wins on the schedule beyond that.
A playoff sounds great, but how would it work? Computer? Human? Home sites? Travel would be utter hell for fans. What is the number one complaint among fans now? Cost. Do we think expansion will make attending games cheaper. Hardly.
To me the best weekend of the year is the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Playoffs, right? In my view, no. It's more like the bowl system. I like the bowls. I like getting to watch 30 more games around the holidays.
The deeper the NCAA tournament goes, the less I'm interested -- this year was an aberration because of Butler, Northern Iowa, etc.
Football players take a greater physical pounding than any other varsity sport. Adding more games will add to their load, and, yes, academics have to fit in somewhere.
The older I get, the more I realize that when we try to improve, we're generally are screwing up.
Jet you sound positively curmudgeonly. I love it.
I also happen to agree.
Good points Jet.
Expansion is coming. There's nothing we can do to stop it. I'm not necessarily in favor of it but what can I do? Nothing. Not that it matters anyway. We'll be ruled by the Chinese in short order and our version of football will be a thing of the past.
