Baseball weekend wrap-up

Hey everyone. So Auburn had a fairly successful weekend on the ol' baseball diamond this weekend.

The Tigers earned a series sweep over Mississippi State, a team that entered the weekend in 11th place. Coach John Pawlowski's team handled business with amplomb -- particularly at the plate. That's where seven batters compiled weekend averages over .400.

Here is the honor roll:
  • OF Brian Fletcher -- 7-for-14, 7 RBIs
  • 1B Hunter Morris -- 6-for-12, 4 RBIs
  • SS Casey McElroy -- 5-for-10, 6 RBIs
  • C Ryan Jenkins -- 7-for-12, 6 RBIs
  • DH Kevin Patterson -- 4-for-7, 3 RBIs
  • 3B Dan Gamache -- 3-for-7, 3 RBIs

Auburn finished the weekend with 43 hits. Ten of them were doubles, one was a triple and the team hit 12 balls over the wall.

Stuff like that doesn't happen anywhere very often ... let alone Auburn.

So where is the team positioned in the standings? Glad you asked.

Auburn is 15-9 in league play, which places it in a tie for second in the Western Divison. The team is one game back of division-leading Arkansas. The team is tied for fourth overall ... and would have to completely implode to fall out of the postseason picture.

Next up: A home series against Tennessee, which currently is in 8th place.

Michael- You are right, I am wrong on the contract. I had read that article before, but incorrectly. Should have paid closer attention to the money side. But, the per school breakout is skewed since they payout to 11 teams, but then again, they don't have a championship game. That will change things.

Which would you prefer?

1) Auburn wins the NC with one loss to Alabama.

2) Auburn goes undefeated and wins the SEC, but doesn't win the national title.

Inquiring minds want to know.

As much more money that the big 10 makes per school from their crappy network, they still don't pull the most per school in total revenues from all sources. Plus, it's cold there.

I don't know that expansion of the SEC is bad or good. I would like to see how the scheduling would work. For instance, if we wouldn't play Georgia every year, I am against it.

The last time the SEC expanded, was it good or bad for Auburn?

In terms of our schedule, it got a little easier. We no longer play UT and UF every year. The problem is, I loved playing UT and UF every year. UT was always about the second or third game of the season and huge. UF was always right before Georgia, making amen corner very impressive.

I ended up not liking how things ended up the last time the SEC expanded. If we expand again, a lot will depend upon how it happens. Move Auburn into the east and make Bama our permanent west opponent, and I would love it.

Winning the crystal ball w/o beating Bama would just feel wrong.

I know Jet and I have agreed on this in the past, but beating LSU in 2001 (and sending us to Atlanta for the Championship game) after getting stomped by Bama at J-H the week before would have been a hollow victory for me.

2:54 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I wonder if UF ever sits there and wonders what it's like to not have beaten AU and Ole Miss those two times. I guess they can ponder it while they stare at the Waterford Crystal.

2:55 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I wouldn't mind either if we lost Florida or Ole Miss and still won the national title.

But Bama is a different story.

3:00 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

To me, E-bro, it's just another stepping stone on the way to a trophy. It doesn't matter who it is to me.

Is it nice to beat Bama, sure but it's better to win the hardware.

3:00 PM
Blogger michael said...

As a fan, I think I would be more pleased with our 2004 year than the LSU 2 loss championship year. 2004 vs either of Florida's one loss years... now, that is a bit harder. I actually started to type I would prefer a 1 loss BCS champ year, but after thinking about it, no, the undefeated thing is better.

3:02 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Well, I guess I can rest easy because it's hard to envision a scenario in which we lose to Bama, but then play in and win the national title two games later. Maybe a scenario like Bama had with Florida this year if they had lost to us the week before, the likelihood is low thankfully.

3:09 PM

3:17 PM

Personally, I would always prefer the undefeated season over an NC, but I consider it a matter of preference. I find the thrill from watching the games rather than what others may think of us.

3:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Michael's LSU example beats them all. I would be embarrassed to claim that NC. LSU really didn't deserve it.

3:19 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Here is another interesting question. I think we can all agree that Auburn was better than Oklahoma in 2004. I also believe we were better than USC.

But we played a close game against Virginia Tech in our bowl game, while USC spanked Oklahoma like a red headed step child.

Does that mean USC was better than us or does that mean Virginia Tech was better than Oklahoma?

conference call over.

glad to see no venom was spared during my absence on the SEC16 (trademark). i generally don't like messing with a good thing (like AU's unis), but if the sec has a chance to snatch up some premier teams and passes the future consequences could be everyone catches up.

i'll be looking for the check from mr. slive in the mail...

3:26 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

It doesn't mean anything, Steve. It means that those were the results on those days under the circumstances at the time.

3:29 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I think you undermine your any credibility as a truly great team by winning the national title with two losses, but if everyone else has two losses, I would still take a ring.

3:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

With 16 teams I still like the concept I mentioned earlier where only divisional games count toward the conference championship. Playing everyone in the division would mean 7 required games. I would also have the SEC kickoff weekend which would be a required game against the opponent that was ranked approximately the same as you the previous season. That makes only 8 required games, which leaves 4 to play anyone you like, including teams from the other division.

Yes, you could conceivably win every divison game and lose 5 games against the other division and make the SECCG, but I consider that fair. It would just mean you were the best in the division, but not close to being the best in the SEC. I consider it unlikely, but possible.

3:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

PF, I agree with the addition that you have to also consider matchups. Some teams match up better against others. Just because A beats B and B beats C doesn't mean A will beat C.

According to the Gadsden Times Jim Delaney Commish of the big 10+1 says no offers made to any school. The regular annual meeting on May 17 they would discuss expansion. He said they would like to get to 12 teams so they could have a play off.

I hope the Big 10 + Not Big One takes Pitt. Go Panthers!

They probably won't a better TV market, though.

Would they still be the Big Ten if they go to twelve? Could they be the Big Twelve? After all, the other conference is the Big 12, not the Big Twelve. Or maybe they could be the Big Dozen, or the Dirty Dozen. Or they could add 2 schools and be the BDC (Baker's Dozen Conference)

Big 10 has said they will always keep the Big 10 name for tradition purposes, even when they expand.

I think the Big 10 will be looking to grab NYC and Baltimore/DC tv markets. They are undoubtedly going after Columbia and Johns Hopkins.
