Tony Barbee speaks

Hey everyone. I spent some time this morning with Tony Barbee, Auburn's relatively new basketball coach, who had some very interesting things to say.

He isn't coy when it comes to answering difficult questions. He comes correct. I respect that about him. I didn't lob him many softballs today and Barbee answered the tough stuff.

For blog purposes, though, I have to hold back. I have a few summer stories planned and I'd hate to transmit all my goodies here. If I did that, you'd have little interest in the summer stories because it's would be old, tired information!

With that in mind, here are a few snippets:
  • You seem at ease getting out in the community and getting to know people. When did that develop?

I've always been that way -- outgoing, easy to connect with. My philosophy with how this works has been shaped by Coach (Calipari). Watching him do it when I was a player at UMass when he had to build a consensus of people. It wasn't ready-made. Same thing at Memphis. They had success there, but it had fallen away. He had to bring people in. That's just as important as recruiting players and winning games. You can't do that from behind a desk.

  • Auburn isn't exactly well known as a basketball school right now. Has it been a tough sell on the recruiting trail?

Auburn should be a place that should recruit itself. That's what sold me. When I looked at leaving a top-20 team like UTEP, a place I had great affection for, it was hard. When I looked at everything Auburn stood for … from the city to the education and now the new arena … and you've got a top-50 player in NBA history that's part of the program's tradition in Charles Barkley. There's so many things that say: This place should be able to sell itself.

When you're a basketball coach, recruiting is about selling. What do you have to offer? A lot of coaches get into negative recruiting what other people don't have to offer. I don't think you have to do that. What we have to sell stands up against any program in the country. It's all about confidence. I tell them: ``We're going to get it done; it would be easier with you." That's the approach we've taken.

We're starting with the state of Alabama. That's our priority. Too many players from this state have gone to schools outside this state. If you can give kids an option at home where they can reach all their goals and their dreams -- then they'll never go anywhere else. If something is missing on that list, maybe they would look somewhere else. I'm going to make that place here. I'll make it so they can stay home and get everything they want and need.

  • What do you tell these recruits, guys like Josh Langford and Luke Cothron, when you don't have recent tradition? Everyone has good academics. How do you convince them in lieu of NCAA Tournament berths?

I'm looking for trailblazers. I want guys who want to step outside their comfort level and blaze their own trail. I want them to help us turn this around -- and it will turn quickly -- and have people wonder how we did it so fast. Look at the cornerstone. Look at Josh and Luke and the other guys we signed this year. They're the ones who changed it and they're the ones people here will remember forever. That was my vision with these first signees. We're going to get it turned, but I've got to have guys who don't want to walk in their someone else's path. I want guys who blaze their own path.

Hello everyone. I've been away for a couple of days. I noticed that something I already suspected finally came to light. PF like ding dongs.

I am very pleased with Barbee and I wish people would stop suggesting he is/will/may violate NCAA rules. I know the rumors are in place because of his long time association with Calapari and his relationship with WWW, but the man has never been found guilty of anything. There were not any rumors about violations at UTEP (that I have heard) during his 4 yrs there. I have seen a few comments on here and a few other places. I think we should all just get completely on the bus and not even mentions those things.

Opinions please. Here's the scenario: you may recall that in my life there exists a "beta-wife", with beta-wife, I have an 18 year old daughter. Beta and daughter live in P'ville, AL. Daughter has started seeing a boy and she's serious enough about him that she wants Hot Wife, F4* and I to meet him. That's all fine and good as far as things like that go. The conundrum is, this fellow just sent me a FB Friend Request. I've rejected a number of other requests (not from boyfriends of my daughter) from various people for various reasons. Do I reject or accept this most recent request?

2:11 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Norm...
There is no 'reject', only 'ignore'. Much more palatable, yes?

2:13 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Norm, you ignore it until you can pass judgment. Let it sit in the inbox and let him sweat it out.

Take both pieces of Seanzie's advice.

Blogger mytommyd said...

If the kid is stupid enough to ask you to keep an eye on him, do you really want him to date your daughter?

2:24 PM
Blogger Norm said...

See, I knew I could count on you boys. You each confirm the way I was already leaning. As to when we'll meet, it won't happen before 5/28. That's when she graduates (as opposed to "gradulate") high school. We'd initially planned for Hot Wife and I to take daughter to dinner but that was before I'd even heard this dude existed. I think I'll ask her to invite him to join us.

2:27 PM

Norm, I would definitely hold off on accepting. Dealing with daughters and boyfriends involves a lot of listening and evil stares to make him squirm. It might be less effective if you are already on his friends list.

Norm, you could personally ignore it, and just pretend its not there for a while. That way they think you just forgot about it being there.

I will hold off judgement on Barbee until he has actually accomplished something. There are plenty of peole that can talk a good game and I do wonder if he is raising the expectations too high too fast. I hope he can back up his talk.

2:55 PM

I'm just happy Auburn basketball has expectations now. That's a step forward in my book.

3:05 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

whoa, whoa, whoa. There were expectations under Lebo until the final year, he just failed to meet them. Even the final year, there was some expectation after he turned out decent second half of 2008/2009. Those quickly evaporated when we realized it was the same old same.

Barbee still hasn't coached a game yet at AU, Seanzie, and those signeees haven't seen the court, so Steve's point has some validity. It looks good, but there is no banner being raised yet(or taken down 3 years later --for E-bro).

3:11 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I don't think anyone, at least has predicted an NCAA Tournament Champions banner being raised in Auburn Arena. I think it is ok to be excited about the future of the program. Signing three solid players is a step in the right direction and I think it's ok if the fans acknowledge it.

3:14 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

That should read: "..., at least here,..."

3:15 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Sean...I've talked/joked about a prospective Final Four banner eventually being raised, then vacated a few years later due to violations, i.e., Calipari at UMass and Memphis.

3:19 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Pete (can I call you Pete?)...Let me rephrase. Yes, maybe we've had expectations recently, but not coupled with the excitement that Barbee has generated.

So I think it's a different level of expectations. Even coming off the good year in 2008-2009, I'm not sure many Auburn fans expected much out of this year's team. I'm pretty sure the media didn't either, maybe picking them to finish fifth or sixth in the West.

If Lebo was still the coach, I'm not sure 30,000 would have shown up to check out the new arena on A-Day. Maybe that's excitement rather than raised expectations, but I think the two go hand in hand here, though they may be geared towards the future in general than this year specifically.

Norm ...don't do Facebook and you won't have the dilemma.

Ms. Hoopie made me look at our 22 yr. old daughter's Facebook page the other day to see a few pics. I made the mistake of glancing past the intended pics and ran into some pics that a Dad shouldn't see and shouldn't be placed in a public forum. We had words.

My daughter is 22, has a 3.8 in Nursing and gladulates next December. She is very pleasant and seems to do everything the right way (when around us), so on the whole I'm very proud. I just really didn't need to see those pics.

3:49 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Proof's in the pudding of Mobilz's and MiniWEG's comments. The excitement Barbee has undoubtedly garnered has raised expectations for the future of the program comparied to recent years.

As for managing expectations, I think a good example has been Chizik. He makes no qualms about where he intends to take Auburn, but has done a pretty good job of tempering expectations so that he is given the time to do it.

Maybe a counter example would help. There was a coach at our sister school that talked about competing for a national championship just before he coached his team to a 3-8 seaon. His talk didn't help his team and likely hurt it by drawing the attention of the teams he would face.

4:54 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

E-bro,

No, we're not arguing. I think people just assume that about me sometimes. You know what that does, though, right? It makes them an donkey that hits ding dongs at me.

Super soakers are fine...I'm filling mine with orange juice, though, so you'll be all sticky. You can drink it, though, and at dawn it'd be like breakfast. Ding Dongs and weiners aren't so good for breakfast, so I suggest Cincy's french toast caserole.

From what I have read, we will have no seniors on next years team. With 4 starters graduating, being as good as last season is a reasonable goal, but I think we can actually be better.
