Let the watching begin

Hey everyone. Hope you're having a great SUMMER SOLSTICE. It's the longest day of the year, so make the most of it!

I'm just here to pass along some information about two Auburn football players.

Linebacker Craig Stevens and offensive tackle Lee Ziemba have been named to award watch lists. It's a rite of passage for college seniors. These two players are, in my opinion, deserving.

Stevens has caught the attention of people who administrate the Nagurski Trophy. The senior-to-be was credited with 90 tackles last season. He also was one of the four players who participated in all 115 snaps of the Outback Bowl. They don't come tougher than that.

Ziemba is up for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation's top lineman -- on offense or defense. The Arkansas native is tall, strong, durable and generally good. What else can I say?

I just walked back into the office from a fairly large burrito at Moe Monday ($5 burrito and drink) and decided to check out the HABOTN.

I wasn't actually lurking all morning to try to steal scottie b's thunder.

So... from a brief scan of recent posts... I just called home to make sure both of our cats were inside and safe. They are.

And on an unrelated note, today is Carolina Day, the 234th anniversary of the colonies' first decisive victory over the British at Sullivan's Island, SC, on June 28, 1776, 6 days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Y'all can all take the day off!

Wonder if the electromagnetic pulse has reached the Jay Gizzle compound after hitting 1,000?

12:24 PM
Blogger Howard said...

I was kinda wondering about that, too. Somewhere around the 400s didn't someone mention and over-under on how long this post would be here?

And now that the U.S. got reminded that we should focus on sports that Americans are good at (i.e. football and baseball), does it change things?

(and by "Americans" I mean the residents of the middle country of North America, not simply residents of the two largest continents of the Western Hemisphere).

12:31 PM
Blogger Howard said...

I admit that the rest of the Americans (those outside of this fine land of ours) are very, very good at futbol. And I hope to see Argentina and Brazil in the finals (although realistically I think it might be Germany and Holland).

12:35 PM
Blogger wellsAU said...

Realistically Germany and the Netherlands??

Surprising pick. I would think the homer choice would be ARG and BRZ. Two beautiful beautiful teams. ARG's flaw might be their keeper, because the rest of the team is stellar, and the strikers and attacking mids are second to none.

12:44 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

What an epic push to get to 1000. Good job El Calientes. Now ...if Homer will stay over on the Soccer blog we can set a new record.

...Btw ..what is the record?

Blogger Jet said...

Frankly, Scarlett, after our defense looked like Neiko Thorpe on a bad day the other day, I don't care about the Cup anymore.

If that makes me a poor loser, then you really wouldn't have liked me after the 2001 loss to UAT.

It's football season now.

Blogger Norm said...

I watched a few minutes of the USA v Ghana game and about all I came up with was the following question: what purpose does a professional soccer coach serve during a game? They looked about as useful as a First Base Coach.

12:51 PM
Blogger Norm said...

As useful as a First Base Coach with no one on base.

12:52 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Norm...a manager's instructions can filter through the team during the game, and obviously he can make a difference by subbing a player.

But yeah, more than other sports, soccer is one where once the players are on the field, it's more or less up to them to perform (and I dig that), though the manager is still a critical component to a team's success with how he runs things off the field, i.e., on the training pitch, making halftime adjustments, etc.

12:57 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

It's a shame that the U.S. had a chance to make a statement and didn't respond. Just when all the bandwagon jumpers (myself included) start getting whipped into a frenzy, chanting "USA USA" and seemingly getting behind the team, they fall flat. I don't know that it would have really made a difference in the long run in progressing the sport here, but it would've been interesting to see if it had.

Regardless, I'm with Jet. The U.S. is done, and now football season can't get here soon enough.

12:57 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Yeah, subbing out the players is about all I could see that they did during play to be effective/productive as a coach. But, remember, I'm not a soccer fan and I'm pretty sure that was the absolute first time I've ever watched it.

12:59 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I understand, Norm. I wasn't annoyed by the question or anything. Was just giving you an informed opinion on how soccer coaches may influence a game while it's going on.

1:02 PM
Blogger Howard said...

wellsAU you demonstrated my point perfectly! (and thank you for that). I have no idea if Appalachian Trail (I mean Argentina) or Holland/Netherlands is a better pick for the finals. I just know that the U.S. can go back to focusing on the college world series and preparing for two-a-days.

Hopefully only JaSteve understands the App Trail reference.

Did anyone see the CBS interview with the dude from Colorado that got caught trying to get into Pakistan in order to assassinate Bin Laden?

His friends financed his trip to Pakistan to go capture Bin Laden with a pistol and bring him out alive in order to collect the reward. The dude explained that because he got "sidetracked" in Vegas and forgot to get his Pakistani visa, he was arrested at the Pakistan border and returned to America.

Loose screws doesn't begin to describe him.

Ummm, uh, that Faulkner guy is pretty strange. So, what you people think? We got a couple of months before football season. Why don't we all just load up and head to Pakistan and pick up Bin Laden? There is a $25 Million reward which, even divided up between all the HABOTN members, would but a good bit of beer.

1:48 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

I'm in. Baldy needs a new pair of shoes. And 5 Lamborghinis.

I won't be taking point on any of our "outings" though. I prefer to be able to run away like a rhesus monkey with my arms flailing above my head when the bullets start flying, and everybody knows the point man is always the first one to get it in such scenario.

I hope to serve in an advisory roll in the HABOTN hunt for Bin Laden. Let PF be the front man and gain all the glory. I will provide helpful hints like look for the tall skinny Arab looking dude with the beard and things like that.

2:22 PM

Okay, I have a solution to a couple of problems all in one. Just deport all the illegal aliens caught in Arizona to Pakistan. Throw in a free hunt for Bin Laden kit, and it could become quite popular.

At the family Thanksgiving dinner post-2001 debacle, my sister's youngest son announced "We can still win the SEC West if we beat LSU."

I explained to him that we weren't going to win the SEC West, didn't deserve to, and was none to happy to be embarrassed like we were. And frankly, it wouldn't displease me to get our head handed to us by LSU as punishing for the large egg we laid.

Of course, my forearm across his throat might have been a tad much.

2:26 PM

That 2001 LSU game is just another reason Hotties should get after Bin Laden. If we had played LSU when we were suppose to, I think we would have beat them.

That Colorado due has his heart in the right place ...it's just that his head has some screws lose.

The guy has been arrested over the years for stuff like larceny and discharge of firearms. His brother is a medical doctor. Regarding capturing Bin Laden he says: "I'm a thief, I'm just gonna go in there and boost him".

Considering the top SEC team finished second only to Stanford, who plays about 25 more sports than any SEC team, and plays them well, the bar is set pretty high. More than a few national championships came out of the SEC this year. I don't know that AU had any of them I'd say 5th isn't that bad.
