Notes from Jay Jacobs

I just spoke with Jay Jacobs prior to his trip into the presidents' legislative session with SEC presidents.

Here are the highlights:

*I told him that the official HABOTN® disbursement prediction was $16.75 million. ``You're going to be doggone close."

*He said the jump from $11.1 million, which the schools received last season, was known well ahead of time and budgeted. ``Ticket sales are down, priorities (PSLs) are down and it's money we really need to continue serving our customers and our student-athletes they way they deserve."

*He was one of the biggest supporters of MSU's cowbell provision. ``I'm very empathetic toward Mississippi State's situation. That's a tradition over there that means so much to the Mississippi State people. I think about what it'd be like if I was in their shoes. I just feel like it's the right thing to do -- to let them sort it out."

*He said basketball coaches will begin moving into Auburn Arena in July.

*He said the soccer/track complex is expected to be finished in September. The project fell behind schedule because of weather and mud problems in December and January.

*He said the next major building project will involve an indoor football practice field. He said it must be located close to the athletics corridor. My first thought was the old track, but Jacobs said that hasn't yet been determined.

*He said the next building project in line is a new sports medicine facility for Olympic sports. That stuff currently is housed inside Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. Asked if it could be coupled with the football practice facility (a la UK's Nutter Center/Field House) ... and Jacobs said "no."

I am for MSU keeping their cow bells, but I can't believe they will ring them only at appropriate times. That seems a bit unrealistic. I just don't think it gives them an unfair advantage. Their stadium seats what, a couple of thousand. The noise can't be as bad as a lot of SEC stadiums.

$16.75 mil would be a nice chunk of change.

not many things are more irritating than huge 4x4's squealing out in an on-campus parking lot blaring "Who Let the Dogs Out" and clanging cowbells at 3am after stealing all your AU magnets off your Chevy Blazer.

ggrrrr.

My dad still has his 'lucky' cowbell from his days at State. Lucky is used loosely as he was there during the Charley Shira....who had a sporty .253 winning %.

I believe Jacobs worked alongside MSU on this cowbell thing.

Other schools were against it, but Jacobs worked hard to secure enough support to make the one-year experiment a reality.

Seriously? Good for Jacobs.

He's an optimistic guy, someone who believes in people doing the right thing.

One might call him naive.

Another might call him appropriate.

It's up to you.

For whatever reason, the only reaction I can come up with for the MSU cowbell thing is, "Well that's nice."

and then the sound of crickets comes through. Crickets not cowbells.

However if Danny Boy cna get things going that'll be the loudest 50,000 you've ever heard. Maybe.

Read both articles and agree with the outcome of both. Give Miss State a chance and tie Saban to the goal post during the spring.
Leave him there sun or rain.
On the basketball thing I think kids should stay in school at least 3 years. If you get them that close maybe they will stay and graduate.

A five yard penalty on MSU every time a cowbell is heard after the ball has been placed and during a play would seem appropriate. Of course, if that rule were in effect, I would encourage all Auburn fans to bring cow bells to the game. It could make for some interesting drives.

Excellent point Steve.

So in effect they're going to see if cowbells at MSU are going to make a difference in the outcome of a game because opposing teams will be deafened by the sound, or possibly over annoyed by the sound.

great report, JayGT. Thanks!

I'm not surprised that Jay Jacobs doesn't want to build a facility next to the one in Lexington. Ok, maybe I read that wrong.

Opponent fans with cowbells could definitely be a problem in Starkville...a short-lived one, I'm sure. Well, the opponent fan may be short-lived, not the problem.

This is probably the deal on the MSU cowbells - if MSU keeps losing, the cowbells will stay legal, but if they ever win the division or the SEC, they will be banned again.

Doesn't really matter, though. Fans will sneak them in no matter what.

On a side note, I think Jack's substituted a regular Coke for my Diet Coke...pretty tasty, but I will be on a sugar-high for a while.

I will be redeeming offer for free spicy Chic-Fil-A tomorrow between 11-2. One in the mall and another at the CFA right across the street from the mall.

I'm pretty much a professional taster so I'll let you know what I think.

Man, I got to stop watching this stock lottery so closely. It can be terribly irritating. As Al Gore, one of the world's greatest optimists once said, "Everything that should be up is down and everything that should be down is up".

Ticket sales are down? Maybe we should lower prices a notch.

Ticket sales will continue to dip as we see more games on TV, improving television and increased travel prices ... anybody in the conference or any of the schools thinking of pricing contigencies?
