The Five I'm Watching: Part III

Hey everyone. Let's continue.

NICK FAIRLEY
Defensive tackle
  • Age: 22
  • Class: Senior (two seasons of eligibility remaining)
  • Size: 6-foot-5, approximately 300 pounds
  • Previous role: Third guy in a two-tackle system, 2009
  • Theme song: ``Stand," R.E.M.
  • Relevant lyric: "Think about direction. Wonder why you haven't before."

THE GOOD: Nick Fairley is, to me, a totally untapped resource. I watch him play and am reminded of Pat Sims. What does that mean? Big dude, quick feet, light feet, awesome short-range acceleration, tackles that express rage. It's odd considering that both players are generally quiet people. Sims has a more biting wit. Though Fairley managed only a somewhat involved role last season -- he started two games -- the Mobile native was playing with more purpose during the season's final half. He has the capability to be more than a run-stopper; Fairley has the speed and instincts to be a pass-rush asset as well. Nothing in his past suggests that he's an injury liability. Fairley appears to be a rugged guy who can handle the rigors of 40 snaps per game.

THE BAD: If he's so talented, why didn't he shine last season? In his defense, junior college defense can be a pretty chaotic enterprise. Still, it's not like Mike Blanc and Jake Ricks are sure-fire NFL guys. Fairley had a few games -- LSU in particular -- where he was a non-factor. A guy with that kind of talent playing in his 18th college game shouldn't disappear. Though I never heard anyone say conditioning was a problem per se, it was clear that Fairley could be in better condition. More time with Kevin Yoxall, the Tigers' strength and conditioning czar, generally cures those kind of ills. His laid-back nature off the field could be a concern. Will he bring the fire on the field? Perhaps that played a role in Fairley's so-so season in 2009.

THE REALITY: He's my No. 1 breakout candidate ... on either side of the ball. Sure, Cameron Newton has a chance to be a big star. You already know that. So does everyone else in the SEC. Fairley still is under the radar for the most part. I kept seeing shades of Pat Sims last season. I consider that a great development for Auburn's defense, which needs all the good news it can get. I project 40 tackles, 5 sacks, hype building through the fall. Of course, I predicted Tommy Trott would flourish under Tony Franklin's leadership. You might want to take that into account.

What do you think? Speak your mind!

SC, those Aycock jokes were on an expired thread, so they don't really count. Your "Fairley" pun was one of the first ten comments. You are lucky you just lost a half percentage point with Jay G (though if it is any consolation, you gained 6 percentage points with my goats).

well, it certainly hasn't expired in the sense that it is still available for comments. Heck, someone just posted on that thread a minute or so ago.

So, are you implying that JGT's threads go bad after a certain date? Or get all moldy?

I love this choice. The development of a dominant inside tackle is the key to this defense. If you don't control the inside, you aren't going to be very good defensively. Fairley could be the guy and comparing him with Sims is interesting. Sims was the biggest surprise we had under Tuberville. The guy went from off the team to off the hook.

Say, that reminds me of a story, Scottie b.

When I was kid growing up in Prattville, we always had lots of military families moving in and out of town. When I was about 12, I was hanging out at one of their houses and was introduced to the family dog, who was named "Fob". I asked the son (who was my age) why the dog was named "Fob", and he said, "Because he's so damn dumb."

Purely coincidentally I'm sure, Fob James was governor at the time.

somebody closely involved in mobile high school athletics said a few years ago that they could not believe how stupid bammer was to not heavily recruit fairley. he believed fairley was the best hs prospect in mobile that year. if he lives up the hype, hot boy, and other des will have big years too.

i've seen a serious upgrade in in the caliber of dt AU is recruiting the last two years under chizco. tubs went after the big boys and whiffed 99% or got 5*s that couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel (i'm looking greg smith's direction). AU always ended up with projects and managed to develop some good ones like marks, stump, ratliff, tj, spencer johnson etc. one AU insider told me at the 2006 msu game in starkiville that blanc would be the best dt to come through AU in a decade. still waiting on that one to happen. he has managed to be serviceable at best.

11:54 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Blanc has been okay, but hasn't really had the breakout game yet. I really have high hopes for Fairley. The criticism I read of him last year was basically he was overly aggressive and sometimes got himself out of position. Yea, I will take a player who is overly aggressive. Once he settles in, he could be outstanding.

12:00 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

My main defensive concern over the past decade is the smaller DE's that we always seem to have. They are great in the passing game, but get bullied around on the run game.

It can work when you have LB's who can make the tackles and make up for it, however like last year when we had no depth at LB it can be a disaster.

12:00 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

AU needs that dt that can stick out an arm while engaged with an ol and still bring down the rb.

Talk about UAt getting caught by some investigation is as Hoopie stated on a prior thread. It is all noise. AU goes 8-5 and has the #4 recrutiing class. UAt fans were saying AU is back to buying players. Who wants to go to a school who has a coach with a 5-19 record. AU must be paying players. It never stops. Not many accused Shula of paying players. AU was beating UAt and AU fans didn't need to beat Shula up. We wanted Shula to stay.

It is long way to February and AU is in position to land several top line recruits. we will be OK. We are ahead of last years count so be patient.

CHIP-I don't think AU found some better DB's and dropped Jones. He is still a very good player and one AU would like to have. Whatever is going on with his decision will come to light. it will just take a little time.

12:11 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I think Bates at LB is one to watch. If he makes that move, AU has a speedy LB that can more than cover the back out of the backfield. The drag route across the middle hurt AU a lot last year after Bynes & Stevens got wore down. They could not keep up with the RB/WR as he crossed the middle.

I can't understand anyone ranking John Brantley as the best QB in the East when he hasn't done anything yet. I guess it is more of an indication of the lack of QB talent in the East. 3:44 PM

I'm thinking Cam will be somewhere in the ~2k passing. 12-18 TDs. 8-12 INTs. Roughly 50-65% Completion Ratio. I also expect him to run for about 600 yards and another handful of scores.

Spurrier seems to have gotten more and more impatient with his QBs as he has aged. I don't think it has been a good thing.

Sorry I am not in love with PD. I was living out of the illustrious state and across the pond and all I got to hear was the negative with probation. Sometimes it is good to be away. Now to me he is an old guy like Bear and I don't want AU to look anything like that school up the road.

So what did Pat Dye do again? Besides punching that clown in the stomach?

4:12 PM

Pat Dye was a much different person late in his career at Auburn. If he had been healthy, I don't think things would have gotten so out of hands.

And now he is pushing political candidates on us and punching clowns. The nerve!

SFC, I never thought Deadliest Catch could be sad but the last two weeks have been just that.

Phil and his sons are the most interesting people on that show. He seems like he was a great guy. I wish his sons well.

And like Norm, I'm back, from vacation. If anyone likes rafting, I highly recommend the all day trip on the lower New River Gorge. Great class IV-V's.

Deadliest Catch is one of the best shows on tv. I won't say that Phil was my favorite on the show, but he wasn't my least favorite.

Norm, Kind of like BL with Lime?

5:59 PM
Blogger CHB said...

It's been a great show. I hope it stays around for a while longer.

I'm jealous Nova. I love rafting although I've only been in "white water" once. I went on the Chattooga several years ago.

Deadliest Catch is a good show, especially in terms of reality TV.

I hate that one of the last shows I saw showed Phil catching his son stealing some of his medicine. Phil jumped all over the kid, as he should. But I hope that kid realizes that he got so upset because he cared, not because he didn't.

Instead of our annual beach trip, we decided last year that this year we could go to the Smokey Mountains. Turns out that was a great decision.

Our plans had been to go white water rafting. However, I have a friend who went with her husband on vacation to Colorado last month. He died in a rafting accident. They weren't even in very rough rapids and were on their second run down the river. It was the first fatality in this company's 25 year history.

I know thousands of people go rafting all the time with no problem, but I kind of have an irrational fear about going rafting now. I decided to bow out of the trip and stay with my daughter who can't go because of her pregnancy. Hopefully I will get over this so I can go sometime, but I think I can live without ever experiencing it.

Discovery has some of the best shows. The Colony's second season is suppose to start soon, the 27th if I remember right. It is an interesting show, although some of the stuff seems overdramatized.

Mythbusters is must see TV. Any show whose description includes "blow stuff up" can't be bad.

mashed taters, 2 large servings (mine and half of LGGB's) of country style steak so tender you have to eat it with a spoon, fried okra (corn meal, of course, not flour), fresh corn, biscuit, chocolate chip ice cream... yep, I'm tight as a tick.

6:32 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think rafting would be a blast. However, I don't do boats. The water isn't usually too deep when rafting, but the rocks that can knock you unconscious, or the hydraulics that can suck you under a rock into oblivion are enough to keep me from getting into whitewater.

How could that boy leave half a country fried steak?

6:53 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

ehyou - I can assure you, LGGB would never leave half a country fried steak. In fact, he'd eat as many servings as he could get. But country style steak, that's a different story. 2.0 showed MrsTHT how to make it super duper tender every time. It's so good I could jump in a tub filled with it and be happy. LGGB doesn't share that degree of fondness for that particular dish.

JGT,

I think your analysis was spot on. Nick Fairley is the guy that the defense will pivot on.

If Nick Fairley goes above the numbers your projected, I think the Auburn defense swings upward (ie less the 20 ppg allowed, etc.) If he goes below, then all bets are off.

Steve, the show after Phil caught Josh in his drugs, he was going through old family pictures and having a good time with his sons. That was very shortly before the stroke. I'm sure they treasure that memory.

Yes, rafting is little risky. So is scuba diving and so is driving on the DC beltway. You take reasonable precautions but you have to live life.

I'm thinking of doing the Gauley this fall (same area as the New). It's 14 miles of continuous class IV's and V's dropping 66ft/mile. Not for novices but sounds like a blast.

Concering le Tour, tt's too bad about Lance Armstrong's bad luck this year, but the real duel between Contador and Schleck is shaping up to be as good as anything we've seen in the Tour de France in some time I think.

It's gonna be fun to watch what happens over the next week and a half.

Cincy ...If you are around the Ga-Tn-NC border, try starting with something docile like the Nantahala River (class 1s and 2s), then go to the Ocoee River(class 3s-4s).

I would recommend doing those lessor rivers and being in very good shape and a good swimmer prior to doing a river with class 4s and 5s.

It's as much about being in the cool water and the scenery as it is the challenge of the river.

Cincy. I understand your reluctance. Give it some time then start slow like Hoopie said.

WTC, Air temps were mid 90's. The water was nice and we were frequently swimming between rapids.

The Gualey is a dam release river so the water comes from the bottom of a lake. Water temps around 57. That's what wet suits are for.

4:53 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

wtc...Wondered the same thing about Schleck and Contador. Was definitely shocked to see them catch up on the descent. Didn't expect such aggressive riding until the Pyrenees. Maybe these two are just in a class of their own. Looks like it.

They'll at least have the next week or so (outside today's moderate mountain stage) to let their teammates do the work in the peloton and let the sprinters hog the spotlight. Though the pressure to control the race is now on Team Saxo Bank with Schleck in yellow. Can they handle it?

5:59 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

As far as rafting goes, I love it, and I say that as one who only goes once a year if that. I do it the Hoopie way. Go down the Ocoee in August when it's at its hottest to cool off in the water and enjoy the scenery.

The rapids are fun too and I have fallen out a couple of times, but it's all part of the fun if you have the right equipment. Love when we get to calm waters and you can just get ouf of the raft and float down river. Water feels sublime then.
