Getting Our Bearings

Hey everyone. So as you have surmised, I was asked (politely) to make Wednesday my last day of work at the Advertiser. Nobody should be upset with the Advertiser; they are keeping to their word and sending me on my way with what they agreed to give me. No hard feelings.

I am hopeful that Brian Woodham, who recently left a part-time gig with ITAT to take a full-time job as a copy editor at the Advertiser, will be given an opportunity to take my old job. Brian would be a great addition. I'll let you know if I hear anything about that.

As I explained on Facebook, we will have a board at AuburnSports.com with a stricter standard when it comes to cussing and any off-putting shenanigans. Personally, I'm good with the Bunker and have read it for a long time. They get a little upset when things don't go well, which is understandable, but I feel like that board's reputation for savage commentary far exceeds reality.

With that said, we will have a HABOTN-esque board over there for people whose tolerance for cussing is at zero. Just want to make that clear.

I'll be starting at AuburnSports.com on Monday.

Take care, errybody. Thanks as always for your support!

Maybe so. I just can't do musicals.

It's like opera. Very valid art form. I just haven't developed a pallet for it.

anything where they walk around talking and then bust out into song is not a musical, but a barf inducer. Nothing is grosser. The Sound of Music was a great story. I never saw the Broadway version. Was it a true musical? The movie certainly wasn't.

If all of the dialog is sung, then it's opera. A musical generally has some spoken parts. I got that in 7th grade music class.

4:52 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

hmmm... if that's the case, I hate musicals. But it may not be that simple.

Musicals generally have a greater focus on spoken dialogue (though some musicals are entirely accompanied and sung through; and on the other hand, some operas... and most operettas, have some unaccompanied dialogue)

Sigh, nothing is simple anymore. At least this is just entertainment. Definitions don't really matter as long as you like it.

Hey y'all! Just remember my son just graduated from AU in muscial theatre so be careful ;) nah, he's still looking for a job ~ imagine that! Auditioning a lot but in this economy the arts are the first thing to go. Finally is heading to NY to see if he can make it happen ~

10:28 AM

Hey, WEG!

We only joke with Norm about it because he's so passionate about it, yet so unskilled. Hope your son finds work soon.

You know 10/lf for neon doesn't seem as expensive as I would have thought. All that stuff has to be hand made, if I understand it correctly.

Yeah I know ~it's hard on my son as he is heterosexual ;)He played football and ran track and still loves theatre. That's why he and Blake Burgess are such good friends. I just hope he can make a living at it!
Our joke is ~ I'm a fine arts major ~ you want fries with that?

10:48 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I've got some good friends that do a lot of theater work in our area. Their son has actually done some Broadway stuff. I can definitely appreciate some theater. Anything I've seen at the Shakespeare festival has been awesome. When I was a kid our mom would always take us to Fantasy Playhouse in Hsv and that was always a hit. (MJT, check it out: http://www.letthemagicbegin.org/).

But. I can't do musicals. I just can't. Let's make up our mind, people. Are we telling a story or singing? Pick one.

10:58 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

Come on bubbs! I'm no huge fan of the genre, but there's a few good musicals out there. I don't have a clear cut favorite movie of all time, but The Blues Brothers is in the conversation. Grease and Little Shop of Horrors were good too. I think Willy Wonka can be considered a musical too, it had a few songs.

11:20 AM
Blogger NoVaTiger said...

The song is part of the story Bubbs. Good luck to your son. It's going to be hard, especially starting with such a disadvantage ;-). DC has a fairly thriving theater scene that some seem to use to break in. It's partially seasonal but I've seen some good stuff.

11:21 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

either is fine with me, just don't combine the two.

Now, there may be an exception. If the actors are playing a character whose profession is singing, then busting out in song would not necessarily be out of character. Bing & Danny and that chick with the extremely tiny waist and the other chick in White Christmas come to mind.

11:22 AM
Blogger NoVaTiger said...

Paint Your Wagon is another good one. Who'd a thunk Lee Marvin could sing?

not that there's anything wrong with that.

A high school buddy is an atty in Franklin, NC. He does a lot of theater work up in the mtns. His name is David Spivey, mentioned in this article

Me and THT are in the same U.S.S. Stories together.

11:30 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

wow, I didn't realize he was such a big star
Spivey brings a wide experience to the theater having appeared in well over a hundred shows in several states. He is one of the most popular actors at the Peacock Playhouse.

11:32 AM
Blogger NoVaTiger said...

I would say that White Christmas is exactly what THT says is the problem. The story is thin and the songs are not an integral part of it. It's just a platform for Bing's admittedly awesome voice.

The songs in a good musical frequently tell you something about the characters or advance the plot.

Little Shop of Horrors is a very good example.

Also, they have my local as somewhere about 1000 miles from where I actually am. If you click on that widget you can also see what OS and browser folks are running. That's kinda fun to look at.

I'm pro-multiple tabs as well as multiple browsers. For my non-work related browsing, I use Chrome. At present, I have 6 separate tabs open on Chrome but only 1 of those (this one) is an iteration of HABOTN. For my work related stuff, I'm fairly well locked into IE given our huge reliance on Sharepoint and developers apparent refusal to code sufficiently to accommodate anything other than IE. Currently, on the work side in IE I have 8 separate tabs open.

Basically. From the start of this MA has looked pretty petty. Tellin' JayG to take a hike early. Being a month out with no replacement. Not wanting to work out the domain.

It's no mystery on why the paper biz is dying.

12:59 PM
Blogger Jet said...

They look doofish changing the name now. The smarter play would have been to say "we're going to change the name immediately, because HABOTN is tied to Jay G, whom we love, but he decided to take another job."

Instead, this drama played out -- partially on the blog -- and they couldn't hire their No. 1 choice. Now anyone they hire looks like sunday night's leftovers. And the thought that anyone they hire is going to be "the authority" on anything anytime soon is preposterous.

Have fun competing with JayG, Goldberg, PMarsh, BMatt, Erickson, Murphy, Caldwell, and whoever the OA News and the student paper have on the beat.

Doubt they have "more access", but likely has more team saturation of a single given subject - Auburn.
However many persons they have working there are all focused on Auburn.

Well, sounds like MJT will get started on your project, THT, but you'll have to finish it.

Thanks, MJT. We'll have hot dogs for dinner. Maybe Feng can come help, too.

Sorry, I meant to say that I'm a fire starter. Terrific fire starter. A twisted fire starter.

QB - It's all an elaborate ruse to confuse the enemy.

- Tell everyone that Moseley's arm is falling off.
- Send Moseley in the very first play from scrimmage, line up I formation with two tight ends.
- Run Play action.
- Send whatever freshman receiver that has shown he can catch the ball on a double move, triple lindy, "go" route.
- Moseley who has rested his arm for the last three weeks + gets off a long pass,... touchdown.

Then, next series trot in your starter: Kiehl Frazier, who now has a defense where he wants them.

Back to back fluke plays to send the Braves home dragging last night. What a freaky ending to a long night of baseball. Some folks need to get their mind right over there and pick it up.

Morning. In B'ham all day yesterday having fun with the twins and dr appt. Now sitting here waiting on my Clemson tickets which I know are on the truck!!! Season tickets come tomorrow and are in route now. Football season is coming soon. I can feel it in the air.

Tuesday is a strange day for me. Always has been. Was supposed to meet someone after lunch to do something that will be less than pleasurable. They haven't called.

Blogger bubbs said...

So has MA just decided not to replace JayG? Sure seems that way.

11:24 AM
Blogger Norm said...

PF that just conjures up all sorts of possibilities. So unless you add further information, I'm assuming that you're waiting to hear from "Jose's Home Prostate Exam" to set your appointment, or perhaps it's a blind date, or you're meeting up to get necessary gear to oil & lube, then rotate and balance all your tires.

12:14 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Which reminds me, I need to price new tires for the Tahoe and the service to remove and dispose of the old and to install the new. Unlike PF, I'm not interested in doing that myself.

12:15 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I wonder where AllenD stands on doing his own vehicle maintenance. I used to do all of our own oil changes but that was then and this is now. So I pay someone else to do it for me.

12:16 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I don't know about AllenD, but I do most of my vehicular maintenance.

12:23 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

MJT,

Who are the Barves?

THT,

How's the blog installation going?

Norm,

Did the name "Annie" have inspiration? Little Ann perhaps? What am I saying? It's gotta be from the musical Little Annie.

Hey, AllenD!

12:50 PM
Blogger Norm said...

"Annie" is the name given to her by the rescue place where we got her. I'm told she and another dog were originally in a shelter in Louisiana, so they called the other dog "Louis" and her "Annie". She seems to respond to it, so we'll just stick with that.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

bubbs, I don't have the brain reserves to fight with it at night after work, so I've determined to spend all day Saturday trying to learn how. I'm sure there are "How to" videos on youtube.

Norm's a wise man. It ain't worth it. Especially since you have to drive somewhere to dispose of the oil anyway.

It's not really the time of year to be trying to hire a beat hack.

if past experience holds true they'll get a really good one in October.

2:59 PM
Blogger Jet said...

They've acutally hired one. They picked him in the spring. It's like Chizik. They're not going to tell us until gametime.

4:34 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

They probably already hired them in the spring. They've just been on furlough. They'll get activated half way through the season maybe.

5:00 PM

Dear bubbs,

The "Barves" is the word the funny people on Twitter use to talk about the Braves. I am sorry you are not "with it."

Sincerely,

Anybody who's anybody knows about the Barves. Well, anybody who's in the ROF that is.

9:07 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Oh, sorry...Hey AllenD.

9:08 PM

THT, you should consult with Frank or one of those other helpful posters who offered dissertation help. If not them, I bet they know someone who could help you with your map geek site.

9:10 PM

So 4 new tires for the Tahoe are considerably more expensive than a month of my very first mortgage payment. Heck, even more expensive than my payments on the second house I bought.

Blogger Norm said...

I blame Al Gore and Barack Obama. Al probably deserves most of the blame but since B.O. Is my current annoyance I'll go ahead and give him the nod anyway because I can be arbitrary like that.

No need. I just sat here and watched the train wreck. Flop.

9:43 PM

It was horrible to behold. Art can't live it down and tried to mess up another one. The first was just ineptitude, this attempt was just exhibiting a poor attitude. Art does not work and play well with others.
