News of the day, 1/13

Hey everyone. It's been a big recruiting day for the Auburn Tigers in many ways. They got a commitment from someone they really wanted, though I can't offer any profound insights into any of the recruits.

Every recruit is a stud in someone's eyes. Every recruit is a bust in someone's eyes.

With that said, let's examine the significant developments:

*WR Philip Pierre-Louis of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., committed to the Tigers on Sunday. He's only 5-foot-9 (some list him at 5-10), but he's remarkably fast. He chose Auburn over Syracuse and Mississippi State. Pierre is the Tigers' 20th commitment.

*S Christian Thompson, who played high-school ball with Pierre-Louis, said Sunday that he enjoyed his trip. Still, he didn't make a firm decision before leaving. He's considering offers from LSU, Miami and Mississippi State.

*WR LaRon Byrd of Boutte, La., said he now considers Auburn his No. 1 choice. He's 6-4. He's considering competing offers from Mississippi State and Miami.

*DE Robert Quinn of Charleston, S.C. said he enjoyed his weekend at Auburn and considers the Tigers his co-leaders along with Alabama and North Carolina.

*RB Eric Smith of suburban Tampa, Fla., will announce his decision Saturday. He is choosing between Auburn and Clemson. Smith told AuburnSports.com that his visit was a 100 on a scale of 1-10.

Ever been to that Dawson's at Grove Hill? Went there Friday and it was pretty impressive.

PS When are we gonna get a DC? :)

Jay...just read Josh Moon's allegations that some over-eager boosters at AU caused Muschamp to seek greener pastures. I'm inclinded to question his comments since I've not seen anything here or from other Auburn oriented blogs that even hinted of such a thing. Is Josh closer to the AU situation than you? Frankly his comments sound like a load of ****.

I do not believe "boosters" were a significant problem.

My position on this, and I have discussed it several times on the blog, is that serial administrative obstacles bothered him. Muschamp's decision to leave was a complicated issue, but it's clear that he didn't believe Auburn was unified by a common goal.

Listen to all the stuff he's said at Texas. He often talks of how everyone is pulling in the same direction there. He didn't see the same kind of stuff happening at Auburn.

I really like Josh personally and as a writer. He likes to incite people with his columns. You have to keep that in mind before getting all in a tizzy, or, in the case of some Alabama fans, deeming Auburn a D.O.A. organization.

Dawson's at Grove Hill? Never heard of it.

I'm partial to Jubilee in all cases when we have an extra $80 lying around.

Its on the east side here in town, parallel to I85. Guess not to far from Clyde and Moes. Its great man. You should take Mrs Jay. Youll need that extra $80 though.

nthiley ... I completely agree with you. I read that today and the first thing I thought was ... Is he making this up? I don't think Josh had anything to write about and just decided to take the Finebaum approach. Needless to say, I lost qutie a bit of respect for his journalism today, and I actually thought a goob bit of him up to this point. After reading it, I even considered writing to ask Him to reveal his sources. I didn't realize Josh was our sports editorialist, which is exactly what today's column was ... a lot of unfounded opinion about a situation that may not even exist and one he knows even less about. If he was stating an opinion, fine. But do not present opinion as fact. THAT is an abuse of journalistic privelege.

The only thing I would ask is how much work he did on the column? Like.. did he even drive to Auburn? How long was he there? Less than a day? And how did someone that is rarely in Auburn randomly get people to talk to him about it?

Columnist are notorious for this; so I'm just wondering about the quality of foot work done here..

.. my point being. Why is his commentary anymore insightful than the guy in the cubical next to me?

Well, Josh's views on Auburn proabbly are more valuable than the guy's in the neighboring cubicle.

First off, I call him "Bag" because he came to work on his first day in the business with a computer bag so large it could hold two laptops.

Bag knows some people. He's not over there like I am, but you don't have to be there to know inside information.

With that said, I don't believe "boosters" were part of Muschamp's decision to leave. Maybe Bag knows about some stuff I don't. It happens sometimes.

Maybe this is a long shot but....How about Ron Meeks? DC at indy. Listen he has ties to Tuberville from Ark st. and Miami. He is proven DC and Dungy is looking more and more like he is going to retire. I dont know if it is a stretch but man that would be very interesting.

I'm sticking to my guns on this one. I think Josh made a fool of himself Sunday, regardless of how big his bag is.

Dont think Josh is too far off. Maybe embellished a thing or two. Things definately a little whacko in the Atheletic Department. Here's hoping it improves.

You've mentioned numerous times that your Gannett overlords don't allow you to publish unsourced stuff or supported by unnamed sources; do the same rules not apply to Josh?

Technically, that column was his opinion.

Then the sports page should have an "Opinion" column, so that the pinheads (like me) who can't figure that out will understand that it is not "technically" fact.

Anyway, on to the next subject.
