Scholarship allocation
Hey everyone. I started thinking last night (in a muscle-relaxer daze because of back pain) about how Auburn allocates its scholarships by position.
So I broke it down.
Auburn, as best I can tell, has 79 kids on scholarship right now. Some of the numbers were surprising to me. How about you?
Here they are...
QB (4): Burns, Todd, Caudle, Trotter
RB (5): Lester, Tate, Davis, E. Smith, Douglas
WR/TE (16): Dunn, Slaughter, R. Smith, Swinton, Hawthorne, Fannin, Billings, Carr, Winter, Pierre-Louis, Zachery, B. Woods, Trott, Slusher, V. Smith, D. Adams
OL (12): Ziemba, Green, Bosley, Isom, Pugh, Berry, Eddins, Coulahan, Cooper, McCain, Ramsey, Roseman
DL (15): Marks, Blanc, Ricks, Clayton, Doolittle, Lykes, Coleman, Carter, Goggans, McKenzie, Gray, Greene, J. Savage, Henderson, Wadley
LB (9): Blackmon, Johnson, Evans, Stevens, Harden, Bynes, Herring, Pybus, Barnes
DB (15): Powers, McFadden, Etheridge, McNeil, A. Savage, Thompson, Slade, H. Adams, Hood, Thorpe, Bell, Cole, M. Jemison, Vickers, Williams
Special teams (3): Byrum, Shoemaker, Dax Dellenbach (just added him)

Ok, you forgot Dax and I believe Shiver (DS) are on scholarship. If so, that would give 13 (sr.), plus 5 (85-80) scholarships available for '09. Add in about 5 for attrition. Plus, add a couple more to count towards '08. And I believe we can safely bring in about 25 scholarship athletes for '09. With already 22 committed, looks like we only have a few spots left. We probably won't be as concerned about the 25 limit as we will about the 85.
Dax definitely is on scholarship. I'll amend that.
I don't think Shiver is.
Nice work on The Roundtable at the Mexican death trap in the Gump.
Here's my version.

I count 79 after the addition of Jonathan Vickers and the subtraction of Reggie Hunt.
As Mr. Sensible noted, I spent an hour on WMSP's afternoon show. I guess the haters are asleep after 10 a.m. because it was downright serene on the phone.
I am going to skip "practice" today. They're doing a walk-through and Tuberville is the only player or coach to be interviewed.
I'll devise some alternative forms of HABOTN entertainment between now and Sunday.
Tubs interviewed...eh...
I'd rather stuff my face with chips and salsa until my stomach hated me.
Punch play and you can hear Tubs all day long.
Why leave scholorships unused? Is it for the juco guys that come in early?
I don't think 79 is a big deal. I mean, that's six below the max ... but those six slots aren't exactly critical.
(The unused slots were made available for Ken Adams, Onterrio McCalebb, Brandon Smith, Reggie Hunt and Jermaine Johnson.)
Do they really need more guys like Bailey Woods and Grape Slush?
Man, we are bored aren't we?
Yea. This is a really tough period -- one week to go. We've discussed everything pertinent ... at least three times.
Now we need games.
way more than three
Whatever happened with that idiot Longshore?
I think he still has a show and all on weekday mornings, if that's what you're asking.
I enjoyed the article on Hawthorne. I had forgotten about his early adversity. Sounds like he will contribute this time around. As Forrest would say, "That's good. One less thing."
Speaking of Dax Dellenbach... the next time ryan pugh decides to let out some aggresion on our starting defensive end perhaps he should "vent" on Dax "I can't believe we gave that guy a scholarship" Dellenbach
McFadden says the secondary is growing up fast under Rhoads, who replaced Will Muschamp early this year.
"Muschamp was a guy that yelled and got after us," McFadden said. "Coach Rhoads, he still gets after us, but he does it more in a teaching way. That's the big difference between this year and last year - there's more teaching instead of just cussing us out."
I'll take 4 years of perfect snaps for a scholly.
Also, 79 is a good number with the few seniors compounded with the class coming in.
Scott, I'm sure there was more to the scholarship than Dax simply being a worldly snapper.
Crupup,
I dont know, you know how Tubbs is with special teams. Basically, it is a quarter of a scholly since he wont use another one for four years.
Scott, I'm sure there was more to the scholarship than Dax simply being a worldly snapper.
I'm very curious to see the "new" special teams focus. They've supposedly made a point to revamp a Tubs/Gran tradition. Sounds good to me. We've seen absolutely stellar special teams and par level stuff. Seems like we've always done much better with a significant number of starters in there although that's always sort of risky.
I have not sensed a new or revamoed approach to special teams.
Auburn always dedicates a lot of time to that part of the game. This year is no different.
How long has it been since we scored a touchdown on a kick off return? Punt return?
recoverd blocks not withstanding.
That's a good question Phred. From what I can remember it's been a long time especially against a quality opponent. The last i can think of was tim carter 2000 LSU game on a kickoff. Tristan davis and Aromashodu had a lot 40-60 yard kickoff returns but i don't remember them scoring any.
Jay, Gran has been quoted talking about renewed focus on special teams this year.
However, hang it up. Corso just picked AU to win the SEC. Season's over.
Ron you are correct. Tim Carter vs. LSU. Rudi scores in the dying minutes of a game AU strongarmed from the great Nick Saban. Saban voiced his disgust with Tubs "running up the score" afterwards.
Tristan probably could have returned one or two in '06. In my opinion, he looks for contact when he doesn't have to.
Any thoughts on why Finebaum has sold his soul to Nick Saban and Alabama? I can't find a decent sports show to listen to anymore.
None.
"sold his soul to Nick Saban"
Was that metaphor intentional?
Now that I think about it, Saban does kinda look like Al Pacino as the devil in that awful movie with Keanu "you know, the dude who can't act" Reeves.
I've always thought he really resembled Harry Winkler. Throw a white T-shirt and a leather jacket on him. Winkler has a slight height advantage at 5'8", but who's counting inches around here?
*Henry!
Nick saban just got compared to "the fonz" we definately need an actual football game to discuss.
I think Evan Woodberry does a good job. I don't know why you got all that hostility toward him, mm hmm.
Jay, the numbers on the front of the blog that stick out to me are the offensive lineman or lack there of. We need to do something about that in these next few classes. McCain could be a solid back up this year, and "Big Snacks" is useable but that's about it to me. I'm considering Ramsey dunzo for this year.
Ron, it's about the small details in EW's stuff. Dig into it and you'll see what everybody else is talking about. His cautious spin sets off the radar big time. If you think his stuff if OK maybe you appreciate duplication of the third and fourth hand variety?
Well, we've reached a milestone: First post deleted.
Winner: mmm hmmm
Offense: Ripping Mobile/Huntsville writer Evan Woodbery.
What can we learn?: We don't rip writers here. I'm a writer, I like those guys, they bust their butt just like I do to provide you free information about your favorite team.
There are a million places where ripping media types is encouraged. This is not one of them.
Auburn is a little thinner at OL than I expected. No doubt.
I think Cooper could be a player next year. Eddins is at least a decent back-up. They were hoping Jermaine Johnson would come in and be the massive RT they want. That didn't happen. They'll just go with Pugh -- who is very good but seems miscast at RT.
Also, Evan doesn't have spin.
We just don't think like that. Nobody has time to formulate ways to frame Auburn in a poor light. We're all interviewing, transcribing, write, videoing, uploading, blogging every day.
I know Evan has been catching hell on the interwebz lately. I don't understand why.
I'm cool with regular discussion. I'm not cool with suggestions of shadiness.
Not the first, Jay. Enjoy your forum, boys. Make sure you keep your opinions within the guidelines Jay so diplomatically laid out.
And, Jay, don't bitch about providing free information. You have a choice.
ZAP! POW! BOOM!
And the winner is ... Jay G.
Mmm Hmmm - it's his house. He gets to make the rules.
I'm alright with that.
I just watched the Rivals video of Brandon Jacobs. I'll tell you what, that kid is a man-sized boy.
Yes it's true, I don't have much to do today. It's a rainy Saturday. Plan A was to spend the day organizing. But instead, I have moved on to Plan B, which was to spend the day procastinating about organizing.
I hate censoring ... but you gotta keep stuff above the belt.
There are a million places you can rip writers. If you need an outlet for that (misguided) angst, well, the search shouldn't take long.
We need a new thread. I'll do that now.
Self righteous aren't we, Jay? Misguided angst?
You knew your bud had been catching hell but it couldn't possibly be because he's rubbed people the wrong way could it? No. People just choose to badger other people out of boredom and probably misguided angst.
You're right mm hmm, Jay has a choice and he has chosen to do this blog. You also have a choice to read or not read Jay's, Evan Woodberry's or any other writer's articles. If you don't like their stuff, don't read it, and if you don't like this blog, leave. Your unintelligent comments such as "Hargrave would beat alot of college teams out there" won't be missed.
What ever happened to Neal McCready who wrote for a local newspaper and was host of a sports talk show? I miss his writings and commentaries.
I don't want any of you all to leave. Really. We have a nice nook here of what I consider intelligent and reasonable Auburn-flavored discussion.
That's not exactly common.
I like mm hmm and I've enjoyed his/her contributions. I've asked nicely that people avoid ripping writers here. So let's just play by that rule and keep enjoying valhalla.
Neal left Mobile and now runs the Rivals.com site at Ole Miss. He enjoys the work there.
Yea, nobody likes me either Mmm Hmm, but I'm still around.
Knowing you like music here is a music trivia question....Can you name this hit song from 1978 with the artist first name like yours and had the lyrics "you boys can squeeze the sails and lick the decks"?
78 is before my time and I don't want to cop out and google your passage.
So I'll simply say: I have no idea.
Anyone else?
Somebody sent me an Email that Neal wrote to WNSP (his former employers) that was classic Neal McCready, offensive, humorous, and entertaining all in one. WNSP continues to struggle without him.
umm ... yeah - I've got nothin
Radio is a weird medium.
Guys like McCready and yours truly ... run into trouble far too often. I guess we're too opinionated? Talk radio allegedly is this haven for radical chatter, yet one doesn't have to search far to find the truth ...
Program managers like homogeny. It's easier to quantify.
and they like for everything to be the same too.
Sorry. Just in that kind of mood. It's the cabin fever.
So, Ron Jeremy? You're saying Hargrave couldn't beat some college teams out there? Now that would obviously be a stupid comment that wouldn't easily be forgotten. Do you know anything about Hargrave and what kind of talent is there year in year out? And you don't think they could beat the likes of some small schools out there?
What needs to happen is you need to wipe your nose off. It can't smell good.
I had to google that name to find out who it was. I can't believe you actually knew that.
Hargrave Military Academy's record last year was 3-6. They finished 5th in the Virginia Independent League out of 6 teams. They lost 44-0 to the Liberty Christian Bulldogs. There is not doubt in my mind Hargrave would finish 0-12 in D-1. So i was being nice when i called your comment unintellegent it was way more ignorant than that.
What you need to do is stop getting all hyped up by rivals.com and their recruiting propaganda and try to form an actual semi-intellectual opinion on your own.
Who said anything about D1? And nice job googling, professor. But you still didn't prove anything and we all know your opinions very well. And, Ron, it's all propoganda until it gets on the field you douchebag.
Ron, isn't it a little odd that you know so much about Rivals? Yep. You spent $100. Clown...
Your comeback:
"Who said anything about D-1"-
nice way to back track when you know you're dead wrong
"Nice job googling, professor"-
A second grade insult at best
"you still didn't prove anything"-
proof that you don't comprehend the english language, because it's apparent Hargrave sucks
"you spent $100 on rivals... clown"
Never said I didn't I just don't buy into the garbage they sometimes put on their website; followed by another second grade insult
Give it up dude. You're wrong.
Can't we all just get along?
If you're going to spend money on an Auburn pay site, you know, there are worse ways than dropping $100 on Rivals.
Bryan and J Lee are good and, in my opinion, they keep things pretty real. At least they don't perpetuate the myth that every Auburn Tiger one day will be in line for the Papacy, you know?
As you can tell, I have an educated guess as to who used my name.
Just for the record I was referring to the Hargrave article that the actual rivals.com staff wrote it was nothing against J Lee or B matthews. I enjoy their articles (hence the $100).
They do good work. I read their stuff.
Jay Ferguson...Shakedown Cruise....does bring back memories!!!
