Tuberville speaks, 9/7

Hey everyone. Tuberville's "Sunday Conversation" has ended. Here's a synopsis.
  • Kodi Burns is the hot topic right now. Tuberville said he spoke earlier today with Burns, who was "concerned" about how things went down against Southern Miss.

"I still look for him to fight ... and fight hard," Tuberville said. "We'll keep working with him."

  • Tuberville said: "We're not going to stereotype him as a guy who runs the ball. His passing has really improved."

  • Tuberville again on quarterbacks: "They won't be on short leashes."

  • As some of the HOTTIES pointed out yesterday, Auburn stuck with its top defensive backs for almost the entire USM game. Guys like Neiko Thorpe and D'Antoine Hood weren't a factor. Why?

``It just didn't work out. We'll have a plan because (the starters) can't be out there that long."

  • Tuberville said Jerraud Powers and those guys played at least 60 snaps apiece.

  • Tuberville on Chris Slaughter, who was suspended indefinitely prior to the USM game: "It'll be a while."

  • Auburn has no significant injuries to report.

  • On last year's home loss to Mississippi State: ``We weren't in sync. We weren't a good football team at that time."

  • A random, out-of-context quote that I found amusing: ``There's not a lot of fun in football." (He was discussing the controversial Washington-BYU finish.)

  • Josh Bynes has been playing quite a bit behind Tray Blackmon at MLB so far this season. Tuberville said that's because Blackmon ``isn't a Carlos Rogers in terms of endurance." Middle linebacker is a particularly trying position. He has to be all over the field.

  • Players of the week are: Jason Bosley (offense), Jerraud Powers (defense), Anthony Jemison (scout offense) and Jacob Shirey (scout defense).

Odds on Kodi to transfer? I say 75%

I'd say it's been discussed.

Well, I'd hate to lose him but I understand. I think Barrett Trotter is an intriguing guy.

Jay, It seems we are losing guys via transfer, injury etc at an alarming rate. Do you sense any concern around the complex?

No. None.

Who all has left? Do you know something I don't?

Ramsey is looking at Miss St. Gotta be a family thing.

Kodi's thought about transferring already after the bowl game when he first "heard" Todd was coming in. He's thinking about it again. I don't doubt that for a second.

Look, life's rarely fair. Kodi, whether he's had a fair shot or not, has not taken advantage of his opportunities. Things happen for a reason. He should take it as a lesson and stick around and improve. He's one play away from being a full time starter at 19 or 20 years old. That's not a bad place to be in.

Well I guess not technically transfers other than furr, but the bosley rumors, possible kodi, a number of players from the 07 class (10) that will never step foot on campus. I don't know what it is, probably just me. It always takes me to watch us against LSU to get a true feel for the team. Thanks for the good work!

Bosley??

You know, crudup, I just told someone that in an email.

Kodi hasn't had a ton of opportunities ... but he hasn't seized the few he's had. I believe he's going to be a good quarterback.

I'm no longer sure it'll be at Auburn. He thinks he should be playing a lot, that idea makes sense to everyone (Auburn coaches included) and I'm not sure that's going to happen right now.

Conditions are ripe for transfer.

No way on Bosley.

I'll give you a George Foreman GUAR-ON-TEE there. He's 100% Auburn.

Jay,
its my opinion Kodi, should hang tough adn wait his turn, play in spots adn shine when he gets a chance..... remember everybody loves the backup when things are going well adn a chance is needed... we will definitely need him during the year...

Sorry I meant Ramsey :{. But that one baffles me, it doesn't really matter where he is, he will not pay until that back is better. Don't really see a drop off with Isom. I just liked him as a player...seems like a tough dude. I heard it just kills him that he is not paying.

For anyone on the inside...how much of Kodi's decision will be dependent on his father?

Just a hypothetical:

Lets say Kodi transfers. Do Tubs and Franklin do a 180 and give the reigns fully to Todd? After spending all spring and summer pumping sunshine about NEEDING two QB's to run this offense?

That's one of the things I dont like about Tubs. You always feel like you're being lied to. I understand that the general public is on a need to know basis. But I also dont like feeling stupid for buying anything he says.

All Kodi has to do is learn the offense and learn to go through the receiver progressions. He will easily be the starter once he does that. If he doesn't learn how to do that, then he will not be a good qb anywhere. He actually has a very good chance to win the starting positon at AU before the season is over.

Even Ryan Perriloux was smart enough to be patient and learn while waiting for his chance

Hip Hop:

Just my opinion. But I think this is franklin's thing. He's the one guilty of the double talk. He said he needed a QB that's a second or third tailback basically on each possession. That isn't Todd. Two ways to look at it. #1 Kodi hasn't taken advantage of his time on the field. With that said, he could run three straight times and be more valuable than second guessing whether he should take the 5 yards on the ground yesterday or lob the ball to a receiver that was sitting 5 yards in front of him.

#2. After looking at #1 we may have to see Franklin's point of view. He's got to have execution. Kodi is very much alive and well. He now knows flounderingnot an option.

Holy Cow Hip Hop.....you have already assumed the CTT has lied to you and are aleady mad about it. Instead of speculating and getting angry about it, let's see what happens.

I believe that CTT took the advice from the Oregon coach regarding having 2 qbs ready to heart. So I think that those previous statements were honest.

CTT has already admitted that trying to play 2 QBs was a mistake, so I don't see any lying going on there. If Kodi is a quitter and leaves, then it will be tuff to get Caudle ready during game weeks as we start the SEC schedule, so we would probably only be able to play Todd in the tuff games. I realize that this is really rediculous speculation, but I'm just trying to "pre-explain" the lies that you may be anticipating.

There may have been some reason for fan concern about Burns' status this morning.

Those worries now are unfounded.

I'm not sure how this goes back to Burns not seizing his opportunity. He was clearly the better QB in the ULM game. If not for WR drops and Smith's long toes he would have had 2 TD passes. even in the USM game if Billings doesnt let the DB push him out of bounds Kodi has a TD in that game as well.

Kodi should at least get the same chance to run the offense uninterrupted like Todd did before the final decision is made. I hope I'm wrong but I cant see Todd thriving against faster more physical SEC defenses. His arm seems weak, he's not deliberate in his decisions, and his mobility is not great. Those just seem like the worst set of variables to have for a QB in a run oriented spread.

7:28 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

He's had chances.

Again, not many chances. He had some against ULM. I'm not sure he was the betterquarterback against ULM. He certainly wasn't poor.

I still think we'll see a lot of Kodi Burns before this season ends.

#2 DBs. They need to be playing. When the D got tired Saturday, and granted it was pretty hot and humid, I thought it was the backfield that looked the most tired. Gotta get that fixed.

Raymond Cotton is a very good recruit. I want to make that clear. He may be the Top Recruit when February arrives.

I just don't know that he's the solution to Auburn's arm troubles. Maybe he is. I haven't seen the kind of refined footwork that Franklin will demand before putting the kid out there.

Granted, we're talking about 2010 or whatever ...

my 2 cents on the qb situation.... todd looked a whole lot better on tv when i watched it today then he did in person on sat. if todd is making the better decisions then i'm cool with that. i'd rather him double pump to 4 diff receivers and hit the 5th guy than throw to the wrong guy on his first look. he's just not going to have that kind of time come this week @ MSU and then LSU. i still don't see his arm giving us the deep threat that we need, either. why we can't use kodi like Urban Meyer used tebow with leak in 06? let them both play in a series. they both play, we keep the deep throw and running threats. would that really mess with their 'flow'? my guess is you'd be better off sitting 30 seconds than 30 minutes on the sidelines. ok, i feel better....

What's up Scottie B?

Jay G, I think if the offense will just stay fundamentally fundamental, they should be fine.

If feel bad for Kodi. If Todd could throw a 40 yd. frozen rope, I wouldn't feel that way. But he can't, so I do. How long before recievers quit TRYING to get open deep? Bound to happen if they don't see a ball come their way every now and then. Truthfully, if we can't get it out there, then they need to be blocking for the short pass guy. It really is kind of a mess when you break it down.

Tommy Trott was open plenty.

Based on what happened against USM, you know, Todd is a reasonable choice. He played pretty well. Is his arm flawed? There is no doubt.

That's why I think Burns is going to be back in the fray before long. He has a much better arm, he's a much better runner. Once he gains more accuracy and more patience in the pocket, he'll be the more complete player.
