Looking ahead to Thursday

Hey everyone. Thanks for making today the SINGLE GREATEST DAY in HABOTN history. We have seen traffic numbers I considered impossible six months ago. HOTTIES > everyone else on earth.

So tomorrow, here's what you can expect:
  • Jay Jacobs speaks at 11 a.m. I'll have a live blog going. I'll be getting footage for a video.

  • Kirk Sampson, Auburn's excellent media relations ace, said two players will be available for interviews. I expect one of them to be Jason Bosley.

  • We'll be scanning the nation for the people and places Jacobs seeks for guidance. He needs a coach. We'll figure out where that next guy is right now.

On that note, I am headed back to the Gump for a few hours of sleep ...

Get ready to be called out by Bosley tomorrow. I bet he's not a happy camper.

On a side note, the national media is in full righteous indignation mode (as predicted by many) in the wake of this.

Eerily familiar to how Alabama got shellacked for firing Shula. Let's all hope Auburn's next move is one in an exciting direction.

Good work today, Jay. As always...

I think Jay just wanted an excuse to start a new thread. He saw 400 comments looming and had to put a stop to the catastrophe of having to scan through three separate pages. Crisis averted. Great job on the continued pursuit of the scoop. The HOTTIES definately appreciate it.

I saw some discussion in the last post that it is easier to get in a BCS game year in and year out being in the ACC. People, that's a bunch of horse manure. LSU won the championship last year with two, count 'em, two losses. Florida will probably win it this year with one. Two years ago, Florida won it with one. Do you see the trend?

ACC = little sister, even when we are having a down year as a conference.

1:10 AM
Blogger WRB3 said...

Chris,

Certainly you don't actually believe the "resignation" thing. It has been reported (in several places, including here) that he is being paid 5 million dollars. Coaches that resign don't get handed 5 million dollars as a parting gift. Coaches that get FIRED get what is contractually obligated to them. In this case 5 million dollars.

Maybe JayG would be so kind as to check the contract for anything that states Tubs get paid if he resigns. If that's in there, I stand corrected.

I don't care whether folks cut the admin any slack or not, I have to assume they did what they thought was best or what they had to do. Either way it's a done deal now. Most of us will ever know the true story. Anything you read in the media is likely half truths at best. What I do care about is Auburn University, and what Auburn University better be caring about at this point is getting somebody very good in here to run this football program. I am still hopeful (if not completely confident) that they will succeed in doing that. If they can't do that, then they don't deserve any slack at all.

Good luck to Tuberville, Good luck to Auburn, and, as always...

WAR DAMN EAGLE.

Blogger WRB3 said...

Blogger barkley for governor said...

Phred, you said ACC = little sister. That was my point... That's why it's easier to get into a BCS bowl game in the ACC at UNC than at Auburn. Conference champion goes to BCS, where do you think it's easier to win the conference, the ACC or the SEC?

I want Butch Davis, but I don't think he's leaving Chapel Hill.

I was upset yesterday after hearing the news. I think its a bad move all around. I thought it was a smart move to give Tubbs one more year. Why? Save $6 million, keep some good recruits, give the man some lee way who has done good things for our program and also because this is not a year with alot of quality coaching candidates available.

I understand many of you didnt like Tubbs, even before the firing. So I understand your side. But many of you that didnt like Tubbs have spewed some hate towards those that did. That I cant understand. I think as Auburn fans we should all be on the same team, whether or not we disagree. We should all agree this is not going to be an easy process to navigate through. The next 12 months will be hell on fans, players, etc.

Lets see the tally now, $6 million for Tubbs, another million or so for assistants. Half a million for a search firm. Then another $6 million for a new head coach and assistants. MMMM, well I am not math wizard but that is alot of cash. I hope Auburn doesnt plan a building or expansion plan anytime soon because I can tell you where the money has been spent.

READ MY WORDS: NO MIKE LEACH, HE IS THE WORSE HIRE FOR AUBURN, EVER. I CRINGE WHEN I HEAR THAT NAME.

I think Barkley's point is not about playing for a BCS championship but simply playing in a BCS bowl. It is easier to win the ACC and go to a BCS bowl than it is to win the SEC. Although winning the ACC will likely never get you in the championship game.

6:40 AM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

Will Muschamp is the only hire that will soothe this over. Anyone else it still leaves a nasty scar that wont heal. Same as Bama's hire, if they would not have gotten Saban, I dont think that would ever healed.

6:45 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Why would hiring a guy who no coaching experience and nobody knows what they will really get be the only thing that can soothe things?

A lot of assumptions there. One that Muschamp will be a top level HC right out of the gate and the other being that things are that bad that they need to be soothed.

6:50 AM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

Ok, hear me out. Everyone complains that this years senior class was weak because of the fallout from Jet gate. Well now what is going to happen. With more and more recruits committing early its going to be a tough year. I dont forsee us having a top2 5 calss at this point based on the way kids are decommitting. Its Dec. 4th, we might not get a coach for 2 weeks, that mid Dec. that leaves the new coach to get a staff and recruit less than a month. MMMM, I wonder how that will turn out. You think Sen Derrick and AC will go pro now? Most Jr's do when a new staff comes in. Get ready Auburn fans, you didnt like 5-7? well next year will be worse, people going Pro, weak recruiting and a rough road schedule. Ouch...i am sick to my stomach. Worse now I have to go to work and explain why my university did such a dumb thing.

Antonio Coleman's nephew here in Mobile just decommitted. Yes, we need him, so dont say we didnt.

6:55 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think people are overreacting to recruits wavering right now.

1st, we were going to lose some of them anyway. It happens.

2nd, some of the people list on our class we needed to lose anyway.

3rd, if you make the right hire, we can pull the ones we want back in.

6:58 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Why would any top level coach leave their successful programs to come in to the storm that is Auburn football. I say top level because the only names I'm hearing from the group are Leach (has his program going in the Big 12), Muschamp (heir to the Texas throne), Davis (has UNC where he wants), and the rest. I'm not sure the lure of big money is going to get the kind of person we want as a HC at our school.

6:59 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

But I hear Fulmer is available. And Bill Cowher.

7:01 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Highly competitive individuals would want to go where the bigger challenge would be. That would be in the SEC.

Seriously, I know the PTB didn't handle this well, but I never knew so many Auburn fans considered us more on the Miss State level.

7:03 AM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

Its not that, coaches love money, but, a coach looks and sees what out PTB do to people and they say I want no part of that plain and simple. I knew I would be micormanaged by Lowder and Yella wood, and that my AD was a puppet I would not take it. I love Auburn by the PTB have got to go.

7:05 AM
Blogger Aubie said...

Tubs, Thanks for everything. I never thought I'd see a 6 game streak vs the bad guys. Thank you.

Now, I don't know who the next guy will be, or should be, but I do know this: It is time to make a splash and raise the excitement level.

Hire somebody that makes people go "Wow!"

Who is that guy?

7:06 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think Tub will always have a high level of respect in Auburn history. He's earned it.

7:10 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I understand going for the bigger challenge. But do you want to go into that situation where you would constantly be looking over your shoulder to see if those same powers that hired you are now ready to get rid of you? Obviously winning seasons don't matter to some of those folks. The other problem is that we aren't at the MSU level, we are at the top 15 in the US level. But in my opinion, which may or may not be fully in the know of how college athletics work, I don't think you can ask a group to handle their business the way they do AND have to try and please the whims of boosters.

7:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I know it's bad at Auburn, but any high level job like that you have people meddling in your affairs.

You think it's not like that at Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and others?

We just need to make a strong hire like Alabama did with Saban. A guy who doesn't take crap from the PTB, but also knows how to work people into believing in them and backing off.

The doom and gloom just isn't appropriate...yet. If these goofs make a bad Shula type hire, then I can see where there would be a problem.

7:26 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Ok all, here is what I believe needs to happen:

Auburn needs to do exactly what Bama did, and that is give the new coach all the control of things and all the power. It is a risk, but it is one that will be required with this hire, especially to get a big time hire. I think control goes hand in hand with money, and it has to be a package deal. IF TPTB do not do this, then we will end up with Jimbo Fisher of Will Muschamp type of hire. If we want more, we have to give more.

That is my 2 cents.

Someone wrote earlier that you have to give control to the new guy. I agree. UAT was scoffed at for 'backing up the Brinks truck and giving Saban the keys," but look what it got them. Now is there another one out there. Not sure, but we need to look hard. And I would say that if the PTB can't give up the power, then I wouldn't come and most others wouldn't either. If you were given a job to do and then told who you had to fire/hire but you were responsible for the entire teams performance, I'm not sure you would take the job either. $4 million not withstanding.

Well, one of the regarded insiders on the bunker said that 5 to keep an eye on are:

Steve Spurrier
Will Muschamp
Mike Leach
Paul Johnson
Brian Kelly

Names to stratch off list:

Bobby Petrino
Turner Gill
Jimbo Fisher.

He says that if not for Petrino clause, he would be introdced as the next coach. He said Petrino is kicking himself right now.

Jay made a comment last night that made me re-think a bit. He said something that lead me to believe the decision to get rid of Tuberville was made yesterday, which is apparently the case.

Because of this, I don't think it is fair to criticize Auburn for firing Tuberville, yes, he was fired. Call it resigned if you like, but he was fired. But it appears that Auburn was not set on firing him. They likely were attempting to re-negotiate his contract to make it easier to get rid of him next season if things didn't improve. That is what I read into it.

So, blame Tuberville? No, I am not saying that either. I am saying that both are to blame for not being able to work out something that worked both ways.

I think Jacobs didn't want to look like an idiot giving the guy an extra year and still having to pay $6 Million if we flopped again next season. Tuberville likely fought to protect his buyout.

In the end, they weren't able to come to a concensus and do what was best for Auburn, and that is sad, but it isn't fair to just blame Auburn. Tuberville is just as much to blame.

-Reliable reporting from Jay G.
-The access Jay G. provides to Auburn athletics
-Jay G.'s responsiveness to Hottie requests
-HOTTIES who are knowledgeable, respectful, obsessed, humorous, usually level headed and quite frankly, not "tolerant" but accepting of women on a male dominated forum.

I am a refugee of al.com and the Bunker. So, maybe I'm a little PTDS/shell shocked and that compels me to say please PLEASE let's try to dampen any hysteria and general nastiness. Nastiness that is often an attempt at humor, but can lead to hotties insulting fellow hotties and worse.

I'm curious why you'd think a departing senior would be one of the two players available today. Or does Bosley have another year of eligibility?

I agree there are no clean hands in this. Auburn and Tuberville were not able to come up with a way to do what is best for Auburn, and that is sad.

I keeping being surprised by people that think we will have to settle for a head coach with no previous experience. I mean, I don't think we will be able to get a Nick Saben type hire because the environment is different, but we should be able to get a Leach type hire, or another hot and upcoming coach.

I also saw Spurrier listed, and that is kind of intriguing. A lot of times you see schools with transitional coaches such as Barfield and Bowden. They are coaches you knew wouldn't make it the long haul, but seem to sometimes be necessary. A guy like Spurrier would be great in a roll like that, assuming he would be satisfied with coaching another 5 or 6 years.

I saw where someone compared us with Mississippie State. That is far from the case. If there is anyone in the west that we compare to, I would say it is Arkansas and more specifically Arkansas under Nutt. Yes, we were better in general, but Nutt made the SECCG one more time than us.

This is an interesting time in Auburn history. We need to keep a positive attitude. These transition years can be two or three or they can be a couple of decades. Having a positive attitude and finding an experienced coach is crucial.

Is it true that Tubs broke down in front of the team? Man, that's sad. Best wishes to him.

If you missed me on the Wake Up Call on WTLS, you can hear the replay tonight at 6 pm CST on WTLS.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

You have to expect he would break down. He's put a lot of time into this for the past decade and he probably feels like he let them down this year and it won't be on him to fix it.

I hope that Tub talks to the media today too. I think he needs to get his chance to say goodbye in public.

I always feel lost, so I don't guess this changed anything...and this didn't shock me at all.

Yeah, Harrison, I'm still feeling pretty numb, and disappointed, and worried for the next five years of Auburn football.

yeah. i am terrified of this next hire and the following 2-3 seasons of auburn football. it is going to be strange not seeing TT on the sideline next year

Michael & Harrison,

Why so glum fellas? He walked away. He's not dead. Nobody is hating on him.

It's just time to change.

It'll be all good when the wins start rolling.

9:31 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Right guys, remember, it's a football team. Everything goes in a cycle. Had this year not happened or happened better, Tub might only be here another 2-3 years anyway.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Like I said earlier, this is probably the most important hire for Auburn in my lifetime. They better get it right. I think it was time for change, but they had better had a plan.

I really liked Tubs and wnated him back. My soph. year at AU was Tubs 1st year and have had season tix ever since. I don't think i'd be more disappointed if my wife's cat got ran over

To those recruits who are bailing, do what you must do for you. Choose your education wisely, fellas. the NFL is never a guarantee no matter what you are told.

One thing is for sure, ain't nothing like love from Auburn fans.

Just saying...

Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, I think the PTB do have a plan otherwise I think they would have caved like ND did with ole Charlie. They haven't made horrible hires in the past. Bowden was iffy but he had at least two good years.

Blogger Beth said...

Apparently I am drinking the Kool-Aid. I feel happy and optimistic. CTT walked away with a wonderful future, the opportunity to see his child grow up & play ball their own games of football, and a nice payday for the success and class that he brought to our University. We the Auburn family need to embrace the change and remember why we say War Eagle in the first place.

9:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think the hire after Dye was more important because we had two straight non winning seasons and Alabama was coming off of a National Championship and looking unbeatable.

Tubs is now being called on to be a "Special Asst. to the President." I wonder what that will entail.

9:40 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Sensible, I hear what you are saying, I'm just saying that I don't feel there is a bonafide replacement that can walk in here and get the job done and I fear we are going to through a Bama like cycle like from 2000-2007. There are some decent candidates out there, but they are really few and far between, and I'm not sure of anything good coming from this coaching search.

I mean, surely nobody wants Leach. We lost to Bama 36-0 as a 5-7 team the other day and Leach took his number two ranked team into Norman a couple of weeks ago and got pasted 65-21.

I see Michael. Tubs wasn't a world beater when he came in here either. Sometimes coaches just need a chance. Let's give the new one(s) that chance before we write the future totally off. And remember, as "involved" as TPTB can be at Auburn, they are nothing on the level of incompetent that UAT's PTB are .

War Eagle!

I can see a scenario where in a few years Tub comes back as the AD.

Say what you want about him, he's a class act in almost everything he has done.

9:46 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

RK, I would love to see Tuberville supplant Jay Jacobs as AD, and then all those mediaites that labeled us as insenstive backwards folks, will realize how stupid they are.

9:50 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Mr. Sensible, I agree. No matter who they hire, they need to be judged on how they perform, not what the impressions of them are when they come in.

9:51 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Agreed, Sensible. I'm going to get behind whoever comes in (as if my support offered anything tangible to the guy), and I'll give him a chance just like I do everybody.

I hope for nothing but the best for Auburn and I'll be just as disappointed as anybody if things don't work out in the coming years, I guess I'm just saying I may be a little less surprised than some might be.

9:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Whether it was time for a change or not is irrelevant. It has been done and cannot be undone. It is time to unit behind whoever they choose to bring in.

9:54 AM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

I just do not think I can support Leach as Auburn's head coach. I love Auburn and I only want the best for Auburn and in MHO I do not think that Leach is the best for Auburn.

9:55 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I don't know about anything with a unit behind the next coach?

I might unite behind him. However, nothing with the unit.

9:56 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I think the fear of Leach is unfounded. I'm not an expert on Big 12 football, but I know before he went to Texas Tech, I had never heard of that program. They have done well and are always producing quality players and records. I know they aren't world beater records and Leach is goofy, but he plays in one of toughest divisions in college football where just about every other program has more resources and influence. He is not Auburn's traditional style but I don't think its fair to totally discount this man's ability to build a program.

9:57 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Michael4AU, I do believe as a hole the attitude of the Auburn fan base has a huge influence. Look at Bama under Curry. He was doing a very good job, but lost the support of the fans because he failed to beat some great Pat Dye teams, so Bama went through turmoil.

Fan attitude is likely also very visible to recruits. I believe in the value of positive thinking, not moaning over what ifs, and judging the next coach on what he does as a whole. A new coach means that we have to be patient enough to give him at least 4 years to prove himself, which is certainly a big cost compared to giving Tuberville one, but it is what it takes. If not, we will be on the coaching rollercoaster.

9:58 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

WarEagleRK, hahaha, I will have to rethink the unit thing. It might break some kind of morality laws.

10:00 AM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

I'm basing my opinion of Leach on what I do know about his record as a HC. His record at Texas Tech is no better than Tub's record at Auburn. If Auburn wants to continue to be mediocre then hire Leach and we will never reach the next level.

10:03 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Mr. Sensible, Tuberville was one of the hot up and coming coaches when he came in. I don't remember who all the others were at the time, but Frank Beamer was one. We need a coach like that, one that hasn't reached the superstar level yet, but loads of potential.

10:03 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well Just Win, you're looking at it from a W/L standpoint and not at the progression his team has made. Pat Dye wasn't a stellar coach before he came here, check out his record. Tommy Tuberville wasn't superman either. I would also say, the Big 12 South could be harder to win every year than the SEC West. Call me crazy but teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor and Oklahoma State is a tough schedule every year. When you're bottom of the barrel starting out and starting to edge some of these programs for recruits and wins, I think you've done an outstanding job.

Blogger coosa said...

Monica - Good post at 8:47; I'll plead guilty and shut up now.

And I will support the new coach and do all I can to help Auburn, unless the new coach turns out to be a Scientologist, and then I'll do all I can to keep somebody with a worldview like that from being the chief ambassador for my school.

But I haven't heard his name mentioned anywhere except here, and hopefully, the rumors about him aren't true anyway.

Coosa out. Gonna try to get away from all of this for a while.

10:15 AM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

Sean, you are right I am looking at from a win/loss perspective and when you get right down to it wasn't Tubs on the hot seat because he didn't win enough?

10:16 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

JustWin, yes but he had been here ten years and things were going in the wrong direction, I don't think things in Lubbock are going in the wrong direction and I would think he could do better at a program like Auburn than at Texas Tech. Granted I'm not sold on the hire but I'm not sure it would be the disaster some are making it out to be.

10:18 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Pat Dye was 48-18 at East Carolina...so he was a pretty successful HC before the Auburn job.

10:19 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The just win thing won't work when you are changing head coaches. Changing head coaches typically means rebuilding a program. Recruits will leave as well as possibly current players. Marks and Coleman will likely now head to the NFL and Powers wouldn't surprise me either. Cotton has jumped ship. Terrence Coleman has also.

When changing head coaches, you have to expect at least a couple of down years. The change damages more than just the current team, it also damages recruiting relationships that will have to be rebuilt.

We aren't likely to see the success we had from 2004 to 2007 in the next couple of seasons. Getting a coach that is a good recruiter and can win with lesser talent might have us back to that level in the next 3 to 4 years. It is how the process works.

10:20 AM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

Sean, I want to see what we all refer to as "Auburn football" and Leach is not going to give us that. One more thing, Leach isn't a great recruiter and Auburn needs a great recruiter.
