Summarizing the morning talks

Here's a cleaner summarization of what has been discussed today:
  • Jacobs said he and university president Jay Gogue gave Tuberville the $5.1 million buyout basically as a gift to his 10 years of service. Since Tuberville resigned, the school technically wasn't on the hook for that money. Auburn elected to give him that money. Tuberville also agreed to hang around in Auburn and help the school in various ways that weren't described.

  • Auburn told Tuberville that he wouldn't be saddled by the buyout clause if he sought another job. The contract states Tuberville would owe Auburn $5.1 million if he left for another gig.

  • Jacobs said he had no intention of firing Tuberville at any point.

  • Jacobs said Tuberville's resignation was not coaxed and, in fact, Jacobs repeatedly asked the coach to stay.

  • Jacobs said Auburn has retained Bill Carr and Associates, a Florida-based search firm, to assist in the quest for Tuberville's successor.

  • Jacobs said cost will be no object in terms of hiring the next coach.

  • Jacobs said his search will be "efficient," but he said there will be "no rush to judgment."

  • Current assistants may or may not stay to provide support as Auburn makes the transition from Tuberville to The Next Guy. Some of those guys have guarantees and some don't.

I'm not surprised at how people are reacting. It seems people today are always just looking far too deeply into every single comment that is made.

That 5.1 Mil could go to other places at the University so it is a waste - bad use of Donations.

They are not using university funds...all private money. Is it Tax deductible?

FSJ,

I wonder how hard it would be for Davis to say "no" to $5 mill a year?

12:27 PM

Anon,

Technically not tax deductible but sometimes it can be by sending the funds to one of Tubs charities or something of that nature. As for donations, there are individuals whose sole purpose is to support the athletic (aka football) department...this is one of the those times

Is it common for universities to hire a search firm? I know Jacobs has done that in the past with other sports, but it seems like a waste of money when it comes to finding football coaches. Why is the AD hiring someone to do his job for him?

Fired or not, resigned or not, I wish CTT well. He obviously had the support and respect of his players who saw more of him than any of us. I trust their input more than any others in this instance. So long as they feel the way that Bosley expressed, then Tommy can walk away with his head held high. As a leader, you really can't ask for more than that

Personally, I would just like to express thanks to him for the last 10 years.

I'm not buying Jacobs or the BOT explanations. I think it's butt coverage, pure and simple. I think CTT was let go but they worked out something that looked more amiable publicly so Auburn could save face (to whatever extent it could). I'm hearing too much static from those close to CTT that says different than what Jacobs just put out there. Then there's the interview of CTTs mother saying he was fired. I don't think she blurts that out or has that impression if CTT really resigned.

You should have said these three things happened:

a) Jacobs tried the old dead hooker in a cake routine to set Tub up after watching Arrested Development and it backfired.

b) Jacobs called Bobby Petrino and said "Bobby, we're axing the Tub" then realized that he accidently called Tub's cell phone instead.

c) Jacobs and Tub had a secret agreement to method act where he could go out and make up his own story and Tub would just follow along.

Jacobs told Tommy he'd get 5.1 million to never discuss the above items.

I think Jay G knocked it out of the park.

Sometimes things just quit working and you look up and you realize that you are not as effective as you want to be or you once were. His commment about getting the players that will come to Auburn tells me he was starting to hit the ceiling. When you have the fire, you have this idea that you can any player you want if you work hard enough.

It sounds like when he was laying it out for next year, he knew the answer. Especially if you consider everything Jay G mentioned, which is right on point.

No shame in leaving. CTT has been good for Auburn and is someone that I wish would stay at Auburn for the foreseeable future in Alumni relations.

Bryan, it's a rule to agree with Jay Tate around here because he's in Auburn.

How can anyone doubt Jay's account of what went down? It's not how I thought it would happen, but Jay obviously knows people and he has made no secret of not being an AU fan so he has no conflict of interest. I appreciate the info I would never get on my own.

99% of the time, I do agree with Jay. And it's not that I don't trust Jay G. It's Jacobs and the mouthpieces for various BOT members I distrust.

I understand frustration because everyone wants to talk about what happened today, but those guys are doing a good deed, so I can excuse them for taking time away from the show for this.

Tim, we agree with Jay G around here because he checks his facts AND if he makes a mistake, he then owns up to it and corrects himself.

Well in the last six years Daniel Moore did a number of paintings from the past (Stabler, LeRoy Jordan, Van Tiffin Reissue etc) and he also did one for Tyrone Prothro's catch. Also, they also came out with the houndstooth baseball cap and the Saban sun hat. Never a shortage.

Despite protestations from some around here.. (ahem) there is no shortage of great Alabama moments to commemorate..

My most prized possesion is a painting entitled.. Mike Price: Rolling with Destiny.

thanks for the pub miss monica. maybe one day you can be lucky enough to hang a 'scottie b' above your mantle!

That wasn't coy.

coy adjective
1. artfully or affectedly shy or reserved; slyly hesitant; coquettish.
2. shy; modest.
3. showing reluctance, esp. when insincere or affected, to reveal one's plans or opinions, make a commitment, or take a stand:

(my mother = bama, I overcame - Auburn scholarship helped lol)

Jay, off all the stuff you heard and reported on today, tell us which parts of it you feel to be BS?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not taking public information and spinning it into something else without a foundation. ESPN and hacks like Finebaum make use of such tactics.

There was a press conference. There were comments by an AD. That AD answered very specific questions with answers that were logical. There's always speculation. But if there's nothing to back it up with these hacks should not report otherwise.

Go...

Jay, don't do it if you don't think it's good for business. I just hate to see the story contorted by all these jackassed because they don't have another story right now.
